Absolutely incredible. Best raw oysters I've had in a long time. The server was sweet, kept our waters topped up and got our food quick! The restaurant is also very fun to be in they had a game playing on the TV and was nice and relaxed.

A top spot for fresh and delicious seafood, all of the items on the menu are Great from starters to entrees! I never have room for dessert but leave with a belly full and a happy heart. Four stars only because it could have a little cleaner. But 5 stars for the food. We had whole broiled flounder and it was delicious!! Perfectly cooked, great seasoning and very fresh! The baked oysters are also great. I could have eaten a dozen by myself! We had both garlic butter and parmigiana Beer was good and cold and they have the big bottles of mexican coke. Great place to stop on the way to Hobby airport.

Food quality has gone downhill over the past few years and the quality of the patrons have also gone downhill. Years ago, I would find it a pleasant place to eat at at the patio area and enjoy the nice beauty and quietness of the scenery. However due to changes in the surrounding areas, I cannot find any enjoyment in eating at the place we will just say, that the trash from the surrounding areas use that place as a meeting area to get drunk and out of control. Coupled with the foot traffic and the close proximity and the several incidents that some of my friends have experience there in the past, I find it prudent to order to go and eat in the safety and serenity of my home. I always order the seafood gumbo, which that night it appeared that they had skimped on the ingredients or the person that scooped the gumbo into the container did not attempt to make sure there were any shrimp, heck even the vegetables made it to the container. It was almost all broth and very little rice. Also the flavors were not there. In the past, the gumbo was so good, it did not need any additional condiments. However that night, it needed a lot of Tabasco sauce to make it edible. The Mate's Plate was absolutely horrible. The cornmeal breading was so thick (and bland) that I could not taste the shrimp (heck at that point, how did I know I was served gulf shrimp since I could not taste it). The breading in the fried oysters was also so thick that I could not taste the oysters, but rather the breading. French fries were terrible and I did not even eat more than 3. To make the fried food more palatable, I make my own homemade cocktail sauce with A LOT OF HORSERADISH, in order to give flavor to the food and hopefully breakthrough the overpowering crunch of the cornmeal breading. The Stuffed Redfish was so salty that it was not even edible. And the stuffing was also even salty. Was it worth the price I paid? Hell fucking no! Waste of money!

Fish filets are really disappointing. More like a fish nugget. Order for pappas is you want a real size Fried Catfish Fillet

Gumbo has a good flavor but no oysters. Just small chunks of seafood.fish filets are more like nuggets. Go to Pappas bbq for much better size for the price. This is embarrassing for captains.

I love this restaurant for an authentic southern experience and even better food. We have come here twice on business and left completely satisfied both times. We have ordered almost everything on the appetizer menu and we're surprised with the quality, flavor, and unique seasoning. I heard they have the best gumbo in town and I would have to agree, it was delicious! The boudin balls, spicy shrimp, and key lime pie were amazing. What I especially love it that this place is shaped like a boat so if you sit at the bar it is at an angle like on a boat. So cool! Service is fast, ambiance is casual, everyone is friendly and I will definitely be back!

I've probably driven by this location over 100 times in the 30+ years I've noticed the boat-shaped restaurant sitting alongside the freeway, but I never had visited it before. I've been to nearly every other location of the Captain Tom's/Captain Benny's mini-chain of restaurants. I came on a Sunday morning to see if this location was any different. Upon pulling up, I noticed that there was the large outdoor patio to sit at, plus a side room they added on to the boat. For comparison, I don't remember any of the Captain Tom's to feature this additional seating. There were only about 7 customers around 1130, which was just shortly after they opened, so there was no problem finding seating at the bar. I ordered some of my typical items on this visit, which included: a cup of gumbo, half dozen oysters, and the catfish plate. The oysters seemed a bit fresher than the Capt. Tom's on 1960, and the gumbo and catfish tasted about the same. One thing I noticed was this location had redfish on the menu. I don't remember seeing that at Captain Tom's. Overall, an easy quick meal with excellent, prompt service, but I guess you get that when you come in at off times. I will be back again read more

went here to eat and we were all greeted by rats running around our feet un beknowing to all of us that were eating. they were brave as hell almost walking up to us! i could not finish my food and was not offered a refund! no i dont want free food from here when u have rats running around our feet. ugh dint go here unless u want ratoolie and his gang to boss hog ur food read more

This place was delicious! The combo platter was so good and fresh. Everything on it was fresh. The fish was perfectly fried with a crunchy crust and soft, moist meat. The shrimp was freshly fried as well and the fries were great. They must have used a fresh batch of oil. I will be going back! read more

what a disappointed, I have always like this place (northwest freeway, Houston). But don't think I'll be back to any of captain bennys. I ordered catfish fillets, but was told it wasn't really catfish but cheap white fish. ordered the whole fish instead. Menu should say it isn't real catfish. After our meal, we sat there with dirty dishes in front of us. Our waitress didn't start removing our dishes until we asked for the check. SO,,, menu not right, food not as good, poor service. read more

This is one of those places that you would turn around and walk away from if it were not rated so highly in Yelp. We loved the food. Our server, Trey, was awesome. My wife got the seafood gumbo and said it was the best she ever had. The stuffed flounder she said was good. I had the sausage and chicken gumbo. It was great. The gravy served with the chicken tenders made them special. The next time we are in Houston we will return to Capt.Benny's. read more

Worst Customer Service I have ever received there. There was a open dirty table and my boyfriend went to ask the waitress if it was available, she didn't even answer she just grunted. Than we just sat down and she came and got a beer bucket and a empty bottle off the table with a pist off face and didn't even clean the table. We sat there and no one ever came to get our drink order or offered to clean the table so we just left. We've been there when it's crazy busy and receive excellent customer service but today it was not even busy... if you go I suggest sit at the bar customer service at the bar 10x better! read more

I love raw oysters and they do oysters and shrimp simple and delicious. Definitely not fancy and it can be confusing the first time. If you can, find a spot at the bar, you will figure out the rest. I understand they make an excellent michelada, you are on your own to find that out. read more

Came here on Sunday around 4, and it was pretty packed. I broke down my experience to the main things I look for in a restaurant. Service: I was afraid it would be on the slow side, but our waitress was prompt and attentive. Excellent for a full house! Atmosphere: It's not meant to be fancy, and it's a little worn down but the restaurant shaped as a boat was charming. I was sitting outside while it was raining and the umbrellas were accommodating enough to keep us dry. Drinks: I got the michelada with Dos XX. Honestly the best I've tried so far. Would definitely go back just for that when I have the craving. Food: Gumbo was delicious and flavorful. I also had the Parmesan baked oysters. It was a little on the salty side but enjoyable nonetheless. Overall I would definitely go back just to try their other food and to drink those Micheladas! read more

This place is so so so good I can't ever resist a craving for it... and luckily I don't have to because its so cheap! especially if I hurry over right after work for "buck-off" happy hour when already low prices are a buck lower. The best things to try: the specials are always the best deal if you want a lot of food... when they have a collosal shrimp special you MUST go cause you cant get jumbo shrimp any more delicious and any less expensive even in the grocery store! My favorite things are the oysters (of course), the broiled platter, hush puppies, and the micheladas. They make them SO GOOD here you will think you're on the beach in Mexico. I absolutely love it here and the staff is stable and friendly. can't say enough good things about it. read more

Skipped work today to spend it with my boo and OMFG ! Amazing service and food. Noemi was our hostess and Captain, give that woman a raise. The whole bill was not $$$ including tip. I have been living down the street from captain Benny's for about 20 years now and only came to dine in twice. Once was when I was a mere toddler and the second time was yesterday. AH-MAZING. My friend and I had their baked oysters Benny style. Came out hot and appetizing. We also ordered a fried food platter that had scallops, stuffed crab, catfish, shrimp, hush puppies, and maybe something else I forgot. Absolutely delicious would come again. read more

Food quality has gone down, and now they won't show sports on TV which I can't imagine why. I used to love going to eat oysters and drink some cold beer while looking at the game. Mediocre fried seafood. Dirty location leaves you feeling like a homesick sailor. Waitstaff is friendly enough just don't seem to have the attention to detail one would expect from captain Benny's. ordered seafood gumbo, Parmesan grilled oysters, raw oysters,fried seafood sample platter, chicken fingers, fried shrimp. All were crispy yet were lacking any flavor and seemed inconsistent in levels of grease. Thinking the fryer wasn't hot enough for some of our food and it was grease laden. Went to this place on a Friday with two friends. The waitress was upset that we had three separate tickets. Our appetizer or water didn't make it to our tables till 30 minutes later. Two of the main dishes showed up 40 minutes later and my food never showed up. The waitress was very rude and unprofessional. I paid for my food and left the food there. Never going back here again. Shame that I have been here for the last ten years and they will be losing my business because of a incompetent waitress. read more

Very dissatisfied with the customer service. Very rude and unpleasant experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I was told that there was no reservations, no hostess, or wait list, first come first serve. I took the next available seat and then a waitress ordered me out of my seat so that she could seat her friends that just walked in the door. When I talked to the manager they said that happens every now and then. read more

Oysters on the halfshell were $8/dozen when I went last weekend. And they're huge! Can't beat that deal! Very reasonable prices and good service. This place just opened up so I imagine when the weather is a bit warmer, the outside deck (which looks awesome) will be a popular hangout. Definitely try it out. read more

Established in 1967.

Capt. Benny's are family owned and operated seafood restaurants dating back to 1967. The original restaurants were a mere boat shaped oyster bar serving up a limited menu of freshly shucked oysters, gumbo, boiled shrimp, fried catfish, shrimp and oysters. The concept has since evolved into a slightly larger menu with more seating but those are about the only changes made in 43 years. We still use the same family recipes, still shuck your oysters right in front of you in the boat shaped oyster bar and still provide a layed back family dining atmosphere.

A note on one bookshelf said you could read these in the restaurant but would have to purchase them if you wanted to leave the restaurant with it. I called about 10 minutes before closing today and I had the pleasure of talking with Joseph the owner. I had no idea he was the owner, but he was so nice over the phone. I asked if it was OK if I was ordering right before they close and he was like no problem at all. Just a great nice person answering the phone. It was such a pleasure to talk with him because that type of service these days is kind of a lost Art. So when I get there, we start to talk he shook my hand, asked my name treated me like family. Very personable nice guy running this establishment. Their entire family are just top-notch professionals and they understand how to treat people the right way. This is a lost Art. Food: I went with the deluxe, which is with their special. Absolutely amazing. Fresh bread, all the flavor with their homemade aïoli sauce. The meats were real good as well. I elected for the olives, which were great. Great food I will definitely come back here and try several things off their menu. Being that I live in downtown, this is gonna be one of my go to Spots. I've lived in Houston my entire life for 43 years. I'm not sure how I've never stumbled upon this place. I talked to Joseph and he said he's been eating here for 43 years as he's 43 years of age as well. What a nice guy and a great family. They're doing an awesome job here. I can't wait to keep coming back and try more things off the menu, bringing clients there and becoming a regular. This is my first time ever eating at this establishment and Joseph made me feel like I've been going there for 20 years. Thank you, sir!

We recently visited Capt Bennys and had a mixed experience. The atmosphere was pleasant, with a cozy, seaside vibe, but unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to expectations. The seafood was alright, but the seasoning was a bit lackluster. I'm not sure if it was the breading or seasoning. The garlic bread was amazing tho!! The service was decent, and the ladies were lovely. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it didn't impress me enough to make it a go-to spot for seafood.
