Captain Bill's Submarine in north Phoenix is cheap, quirky AND yummy. This little local dive / hidden gem is celebrating 45 years in Phoenix this year, and it should absolutely be celebrated. Walking inside feels a little like a sandwich shop, arcade and pop-culture time capsule had a baby... and then covered that baby in bumper stickers! At this wonderfully weird, slightly chaotic, old-school Phoenix institution, you can get an Italian sub for $2.99 and add a 24-oz fountain drink for another $2. In 2026. In Phoenix. Yes, those prices are American dollars. So... what inflation? Now, this is of course their cheapest deal, but the rest of the menu is still really reasonably priced. Minimalists, avert your eyes. Every available inch is covered in bumper stickers, vintage photos, signs, collectibles and random quirky artifacts, with old-school arcade games thrown into the mix. It's the kind of place where you could spend your entire meal just reading the walls. I got the veggie sub, which came loaded with FOUR different kinds of cheese, plus all the veggies, and they filled that thing TO. THE. BRIM. Fresh, flavorful, gloriously overstuffed, and messy in the best possible way. The shop has a few arcade games you are able to play & it is absolutely packed with decorations from various movies, video games, cartoons and more. Everywhere you look you will see something new, and there are a ton of stickers all over everything as well with silly sayings, so you could spend quite a bit of time here just looking at everything. Price wise, it is on par with other sub shops such as Subway or Jersey Mikes, they had a few deals on the windows out-front however when we looked at the menus, we didn't see anything about the deals mentioned. The sandwiches themselves were good, instead of having big chicken meat chunks like Subway tends to have in their sandwiches they had deli shaved chicken. There were eight of us in total who had a sub, and none of us were unhappy with our sandwich. I'm not gonna lie, this place is old and feels old, and it is severely cramped. But the girls(I haven't seen a male employee yet) working here are nice and efficient and do the job well enough. The food has been good. Although, the chicken wrap I had last time was a bit dry but I can modify that out. I really like the Pastrami and the BBQ brisket wasn't bad at all. There's a good pesto too. What a great find! Found this place looking on Yelp for something fast and good. I avoid fast food restaurants and any chain restaurants such as Potbelly, Firehouse, Jersey Mike's, etc. even though those are pretty good. Captain Bill's is fantastic. It's a dive, which I love, and has an awesome vibe. Great food at very reasonable prices. Had their 10" signature Italian sub with a bag of chips. Couldn't be better!!! Ingredients were tasty, meat plentiful and it was overloaded with toppings. The bag of chips wasn't those tiny bags you buy in bulk at Costco/Sam's Club either! It came out fast and while waiting we enjoyed the kitschy decor everywhere (on the walls, ceiling and tables) . . . photos, bumper stickers, hilarious novelty signs, memorabilia and more. They had so many different options of sandwiches to offer. I love the whole vibe inside. They offer in door and out door seating. The prices are great and they have tons of specials to choose from. Came here as a random stop on a Sunday. Place was full - 6 tables of 4 seats each. Staff was helpful and courteous. Subs came out in 6-8 minutes. We got a Club, BLT w/turkey and a Ham/Provolone. We came here after playing some mini golf near by. They have a very eclectic interior of their shop and I highly recommend reading some of the items on the walls, it's fun. We got the French dip and a bbq chicken sandwich. One thing I noticed was the small pink sign by the register that says sourdough is an up charge. My friend wasn't too happy that they weren't notified verbally, which is understandable since they lead with the sourdough option it seems. Since I don't like sourdough, I chose white bread for the French dip. It was a decent dip but the biggest issue was how little au jus they give you (we had to ask for another serving). The second serving was just as small. If it helps provide a visual, they fill the styrofoam container to the first line from the bottom which isn't even enough for half a sandwich. My boyfriend's bbq chicken was good and it was packed well with ingredients. He used to go there as a kid but mentioned it isn't how he remembered the sandwiches to be. How have I been alive this long and never been to Captain Bill's before today? What a fun and eclectic place. Open since 1981 And still serving affordable sandwiches! How many places can you still find a sub for around $5 with some at $2.99. This place was busy when we arrived and people just kept coming, that tells me so much right there. The inside is small with maybe 6 tables, some old school arcade games and no shortage on fun things to look at. There is also outside seating. We were greeted quickly and when we told the employee we'd never been in she answered some questions and let us know her favorites. She sold me on the Captain Cooler drink which is fruit punch, lemonade and sprite. It was so good! Wasn't overly sweet which was surprising, but very refreshing. They offer 5,8,10 inch subs. We ordered two combos. Mine with an 8 inch club and potato salad. My husband a 8 inch Italian and chips. Everything was brought to our table and looked fantastic. The bread didn't get soggy which I loved and the toppings fresh. I typically don't get onion etc on my subs, but I let them make it their way and just added some pickles. Perfection! My husband really enjoyed his Italian. I'd like to come back and try the spicy beef and a few others. Service was friendly and fast. There's a reason this place has survived so long. Captain Bills is a north central Phoenix mainstay. I was in high school in the mid 80s, and in those days tables were topped with pennies. Today, the tables are all topped with photos from when I was there in high school. So fun! Decor is the same since then. Overstuffed, gaudy, and super fun! The staff are friendly and efficient. I've been coming here for over 40 years... No lie! It was a Submarine Factory back in the day and then Bill changed the name, I guess when they went out of business on the late 70's or early 80's. Sadly, Bill passed away a few years ago but O hear that his daughter has taken over. The eclectic, yard sale atmosphere hasn't changed since I started coming here. Some newer, wacky items have been added but it is literally a trip in time with young, attractive girls still here to take your order and make the subs. The subs are very good and there is a huge selection that are made quickly. I prefer the sourdough bread, but they often run out. I guess my only complaint is that I remember the subs having more meat on them years ago. Maybe my mouth is just bigger now! read more

I hadn't been by too often because I was never in the area. Now I frequent the area, so I have been more than a few times this past year. It has a lot of knickknacks hanging up along the border. Like a very cramped TGI Fridays. Very cluttered and not a real fan. You have to ask for refills. They seem like it's a chore. The sandwiches are terrible. The bread is extremely dense. It looks like it doesn't have any yeast in the bread to make it rise, so it just falls apart as you eat it: no crunch, no light, airy bread. There's nothing really special about the lettuce, the meat, the anything. It's just a typical sandwich that you can probably make better from home and make a lot cheaper. I was not too fond of this place. It wasn't good. The staff made it seem like we were a problem, but they were nice about it. With 500 four-star reviews, I drove an hour to check out this place. Will not be returning again. Have been going here for years. But now, more than once, I've gotten sick after eating their sub. First time felt like a coincidence. Second time I was suspicious. And this third and final time confirmed it: they either do NOT properly handle their ingredients, or their employees do NOT wash their hands.
