We have always enjoyed eating at Captain D's. It is the only place to get grilled fish dinners rather than breaded and deep fried. They also have a good variety of side options, not just fries. We like the music. We enjoy the environment. Our last two visits, however, have been less than pleasant. Some things need management attention. Last time, it was our fault that we arrived a half hour before the dining room closed. Employees want to get home and management wants to limit hours. By that time the crew was deep into cleaning and closing. We were ushered (kindly) into the tables in front. Two closers were mopping, stacking chairs on tables, putting away the condiments counter, just quite busy. Sweeping two feet from our feet felt too close and we feared stirred up dust. Despite assurances, we knew we were in their way and they wanted us gone. Today, we made sure to arrive at supper time, about 5:30. But this time there was no music playing and the whole room was frigidly cold. This was the third day when outside temps were in the mid-70's, therefore minimal air conditioning would have sufficed. But no one had thought to adjust the setting from when it was 80-90 degrees outside. I guess it was 65 degrees in the blasting air. Most customers are senior adults who prefer a mid-70's temp. We were so uncomfortable that we knew we had to leave. We scraped our food into take-home containers and left. Management should solve both these problems. It's simply putting yourself into the customers' shoes. It's just thoughtfulness. That was what was lacking. We'll go back because the food is very good but probably only order through the takeout window. In a while we'll try inside again but third strike and you'll be out. read more

Love me some Captain D's - I figured it was a chain since I saw one in Florida on vacation. This is everything that Long John Silvers is (was?) but much nicer. I especially like the condiment bar with ice, water, sauces, etc. and how it's laid out. My last visit was the 3 piece fish which is a lot to eat but with the delicious tartar sauce, no issue. Left full and my wallet wasn't hit too hard. This is a bit out of the way for me but will return if in the area and hungry. read more

They lost our order. We were dining in and staff kept walking past us. It wasn't crowded and people arrived after us were being served. When so went to the counter to ask I was told We had a lot of drive through and take out orders. Still no food. When we caught her attention in the dining area, she said Still no food? She took our receipt to the kitchen and came back with our order. Omg this place is a gem!!! The food is delicious and the service was excellent. I really was truly impressed with the great customer service. It's a nice twist on fish and chips or you can get chicken, shrimp, etc. my husband and I drove by then I checked the yelp page and I read some of their glowing reviews and we decided to check it out. It's a good choice for that once in a while indulging in fried food that nobody's pretending is good for you; but still taste pretty good. Friendly staff and very reasonable prices. The positives they greet you upon entering. They behave like you matter, they are glad to see you,. The food is always freshly made to order never had a bad meal there not once. The staff is fantastic all of the choices of seafood are great I would not want to open a seafood place next to them and compete. That is the highest compliment I can give. Well let me tell you something! The first job I had in my life, was opening the captain the store in Columbus Indiana. Wayback when. I haven't had Captain D's food since then because it doesn't exist in Florida. Well not South Florida Anyway. My wife and I (the beautiful Anna) decided to go out for Captain D's fish! (we had a coupon which made it easier for me to talk her into it)! Who is a lovely business outside quiteclean very very appetizing to see a clean garden too!When we went in the smell of that gorgeous food took us over and we couldn't believe the beauty of the interior of the restaurant in fact. As we walk through the waiting line which was not long, we began to start looking for the coupon we had Which was a seafood feast. We thought it would be a dinner for two. In fact I have insisted that we ordered two extra pieces of their fish to go with it because of the fact that I thought it was about two pieces of fish per person for my little was on the Coupon. So when we did get to the very friendly and patient cashier we ordered it and the two pieces of extra fish as well as too soft drinks. He looked at us and if you kill your way when we said it was for here, we looked at each other and thought how amazing! The idea of a cashier looking at you these days is one in 1 million! He gave us number to set an a table and 2 cups for the beverages we ordered. I want to tell you before I go forward that their menu is lush! It is absolutely crazy hand with the light for ideas for dinner or lunch including a fabulous sandwich that looked top-notch they even have the unusual Like crab cakes and a deep-fried or Oysters dinner including sides When you get to side you're going to flip out! Not just french fries anymore in America we have many choices and many of those were broccoli,green beings okra and so forth mac & cheese, coleslaw was there They have so many things that I was very healthy and I just can't begin to go through all of them. So, we took her number and went to the table and I was edgy because I hate to set an AMT table but we had no problem finding a handicap because it accessible situation inside was prominently visible. They also have a handicap assessable bathrooms that are clean as a whistle in fact the whole place is absolutely almost antiseptically clean. The food comes I felt very much like King Henry VIII when they started bringing the platters of food both of us were sort of shocked and then all of a sudden more came and more game and we were told it was for for for baked potatoes came to the table yikes! We ordered a meal for four people and it was just like what on earth! Now mind you, we have just moved up here from South Florida and to us what we paid seemed the double it was a little more expensive than we thought but with the coupon it worked out. We got the same amount of food for four people for half price even without the coupon it was an amazing buffet style of table you get on a major holiday at someone's house! My wife,(the succulent Anna) we got Turner says cocktail sauce and sweet-and-sour mustard sauce readied and began chowing down! What delicious and not greasy at all food! We had stuffed crabs we had the best hush puppies one could ever purchase we had a plate simply devoted to Batter fried fish that was just lovely it tasted like it came from the icy North seas! We had butterfly shrimp okra, we were in heaven and we were starving by the time we got there so hello guess what happened? We ate every bit of fish that cameIn the offering and what was left over was there an extra two pieces of fish ha ha ha we did take a lot of food home. I hope everyone who loves seafood will go into this restaurant and order whatever you like but I really do like it my man bringing two more people in ordering that fish feast well make sure you ordered to stay there and enjoy because when they serve you they serve you and plates and you get silverware not plastic silverware to eat with. Fried fish with traditional breading can be greasy, but other breading options are good. Service is friendly and fast. Dining room and bathrooms are always very clean. Very good iced tea. read more

Went through the drive thru at 11:15, not long after opening. I ordered Salmon Cakes with Hush Puppies meal. The Salmon cakes were burnt on one side (and flipped over so I didn't notice when I checked the order), the hush puppies were cold and mushy, like they were cooked the day before, and the rice had no flavor, and also tasted as though it was left over from the day before. I requested French dressing for my salad, (which had old lettuce) but got Ranch instead. This may have been palatable, had I been given any tarter sauce, lemon, ketchup, anything!... but the drive thru attendant did not ask me or offer any sauces. They do have good cole slaw. read more

From the lady that said hello as soon as we walked in, the woman that took our order and the gentleman that brought our food. Very nice place. Place is not close to our home. Last Sunday late afternoon we ate here. I was so impressed with (I think he was the manager). An elderly man came in on a walker. The manager was so sweet to him. Second was a few weeks later, there was a lack of service, and the food was just blah. Now today, the end of march, its still the same. The tea tastes old. The people are unfriendly. I have been a fan of Captain D's for a long time. I often travel 25 minutes from Pendleton, IN to north Anderson. Especially liked the new lobster roll. The last two visit were well below standards for the food quality and service. We ordered a kids meal for our grandson and found out that they do not have child's drinks like milk or apple juice. The only option was water or unhealthy carbonated drinks. Plus it included either a small chocolate chip cookie or some game/toy. Why not both? My wife ordered lobster rolls and was told hat they were not making anymore for the night. Really? She was not happy & decided that she would not order anything. Wish I had made the same decision. My almost $8.00 two piece fish & shrimp dinner consisted of two thinly sliced fish fillets, that together would not nave been made one regular fillet, and five small over cooked pieces of shrimp. It was hardly worth $7.88 without a drink. Neither was the four piece chicken dinner my 13 year grandson ordered. To top it off we had to wait over ten minutes for our mac and cheese side orders. They did offer us complimentary drinks. Only problem, we drink water with our meals. It has become clear that ownership/management only cares about being profitable. The portions of the fish and shrimp have decreased. The quality of the sides like hush puppies, mac & cheese and coleslaw have decrease. But the prices of the meals have increased. I've been a fan of Captain D's food for a long time, since before the fire and the remodel. Yesterday, my mother and I stopped in for lunch. She ordered the shrimp and I ordered the sampler platter. Everything was good (as usual) until I moved a chicken strip aside to get to a piece of fish. That was when I discovered that we were not dining alone. There, nestled quite comfortably among the crumblies (actually my favorite part, which has been sorely lacking since the new and improved restaurant opened) was a nicely deep-fried and crispy carpenter ant. Now, granted, he wasn't eating all that much and he certainly wasn't taking up much space, but I am disinclined to eat my lunch with an insect for a companion, much less have one for part of the main course. Even if he had been dipped in expensive dark chocolate, I still would not have found him appetizing. I immediately brought the discovery of my new friend to an employee who had just delivered an order to another table. She took one look and snatched my plate away without a word of apology. A few minutes later, another employee came to our table and, again without a word of apology, handed me reimbursement for my meal. This was a very nice gesture, but it certainly would have been appropriate for the woman (I'm assuming a manager? or at least an assistant manager?) to, at the very least, offer a verbal apology for our uninvited guest. I have to admit to being more upset by the attitude of the employees than I was at the discovery of the 'extra' with my meal. Apparently, the employees are no more concerned with good customer relations than they are about discovering a 'bug in the works'. Needless to say, it will be a lllloooonnnngggg time before I patronize this restaurant again, if ever. Guess I'll have to satisfy any craving for fish down the road at Frisch's; their fish sandwich is excellent, as is the haddock dinner. And the employees are friendly and obviously care about their patrons. Perhaps the owner(s) of Captain D's could suggest some of their employees grab lunch at Frisch's and take note of how customers should be treated. read more

Had been going to old Captain D's for years. Went to the new rebuilt one the other night and it was crazy. After waiting for our food for exactly 26 minutes from time we placed order, we were then told we had no place to sit because there were no tables open. Here is a thought. Since the old building burnt down and entire building had to be rebuilt from the ground up, how about adding a little more square footage in a new building so customers do not have to be turned away. We could have gotten faster service at Red Lobster and they are not even fast food! We noticed several of the male employees in the kitchen window standing around chatting while people had already been waiting over 20 minutes for their food. Then to top it all off we wanted grilled fish and their grill was not working. It is a shame that "new and improved" is not the case here. We will not be back after going all of these years.
