Passing through McAlester from Texas and seen the good reviews on this place so we decided to eat here. All I can say is wow!! Even though they were busy they sat all 5 of us quick. Server was fast and the food came out just as fast. It was Soooo good. I had the Red snapper with red beans and rice. We were driving through and decided to sit down instead of do fast food. This was such a great choice! The atmosphere is really fun and nicely done and the food is amazing. The NY strips were cooked perfectly, the etouffee had just the right amount of spice and crawfish in every bite and The fried catfish was tender and delicious! Came for the oysters. Was greeted at the door with friendly hostess. Was seated in a booth. Our server seemed friendly enough. Ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell, a Guinness and a Dr. pepper. Got our drinks and a 1/2 dozen oysters. Told her that we ordered a full dozen. A bit later we got the other 1/2. The oysters weren't shucked properly and why serve them at an angle, we are losing all of the yummy brine. Finished those and our steaks came along. Cooked to perfection. My husband enjoyed his baked potato and his sweet potato. My filet was delicious. The server asked if there was anything missing. My salad. She brings it out with ranch. Mind you she didn't ask me what dressing I wanted. I would have liked Italian or a vinaigrette of some sort. Nope we don't have either but we do have 1000 island. Nope I guess we'll suffer through the ranch. Which is honestly my last choice ever for a salad dressing. As we are almost done with our meal our server asks if we would like to go drinks. No dessert or maybe even another dozen of oysters, which we would've probably done. We felt we were being ushered out quickly. All in all we enjoyed our meal and wish the server was a lil bit more engaging instead of not wanting to be there. read more

Table of 5 for dinner. I have no problem with the food & drinks. What did arrive at our table was good. The items that did not arrive were an order of crabcakes, a side order of pinto beans & my salad. If the waitress had ever returned to the table after bringing the majority of our order I would have reminded her. She did not. We assumed she just didn't hear those items being ordered & they would not be on the bill. WRONG! I don't know how the heck this place is on the top of Yelp reviews for the area. The only positive thing I can say is the front of house folks were friendly enough. The food is on par with McDonald's and no one cared when we let them know the roux was burned. They just kept on serving their nasty food to everyone. Had to wait 25 minutes- good restaurants are busy in prime time - so no big deal. They had a frog leg special which was fantastic! Had the Red Snapper- serves one just fine. We have visited Captain Johns Seafood on three separate occasions. The first time we stopped in we were pleasantly surprised. Decor is a western themed. Very tastefully done. Menu has plenty of choices from steak to pasta to crawfish. We have had the Red Snapper, Cajun pasta, Crawfish, New York Strip and Red Beans and Rice. All were excellent; however, our favorite is the Cajun Pasta. It is full of flavor, cooked to perfection, and comes with this zesty cornbread that is out of this world. If you find yourself in Mcalester, OK you definitely need to give Captain Johns a try. You will not be disappointed. This is the best place in town by far. read more
