What a vibe! I came for Ani-Mondays (anime Mondays) and it did not disappoint. They had Inyuasha on, a tarot card reader, and lots of board games. There was a good mix of 20 and 30 something's, families, and singles. I got the fish tacos and will be back for more options on the menu. Everyone in and out was friendly and relaxed. Captain Larry's is the best bar in Baltimore, especially if you're looking for your own personal "Cheers" in charm city! Every person there will greet you with a friendly hello and warm smile, then you can absolutely guarantee you will come back for the delicious menu (more than your standard bar fare) and just to chat with the owner Mara, or one of the amazing bartenders! I can't say enough great things about their food, especially Sunday brunch and the drinks are always !! It's a gem of a bar in the Federal Hill area that is more chill than what you find on Cross Street. Basically, it's a fun, friendly, warm, and welcoming place to go and perhaps even meet some new friends! Had to frequently interrupt our loud, boozy bartender from conversation with patrons to get basic service like silverware. Food is mediocre at best. Ambiance is like a fraternity tap room: loud, and smelly. Don't fall for the 'neighborhood gem' marketing description. We love this neighborhood mainstay. They have signature staples like the fish tacos and crab cakes (my fav summer meal is the crab cake, side Cesar and a glass of white wine) but also a variety of specials. They make amazing soups, and have a great brunch (our daughter loves the French toast with berries and fresh cream). Very family friendly- they have board games, side walk chalk and they support so many local schools and charities. Ive ordered their crab quiche for family holidays and it's always a hit- easy and delicious. We had our son's baptism party there. It was great to have so many people in a family friendly space instead our row home. It's just makes for a nice casual meal. read more

Cap. Larry's is a neighborhood favorite with some awesome signature dishes. Having eaten almost everything on the menu I can wholeheartedly recommend several notable items. Firstly for aps: the buffalo wings stand tall against any out there, also the HoJo style clam strips and Cheese curds are fried delights. For entrees the Fish Sammy (mahi with fresh veg on wheat) can hardly be beat and is one of my favorites but lately I've been addicted to the Devin Burger ( cheese, bacon, avocado, fried egg, special sauce). However both of these and most other prepared foods on earth pale in comparison to Larry's totally legit Crab Cakes. They are just ridiculously perfect. If you are looking for the quintessential MD crab cake, this is it. Larry's is an institution. It is the quintessence of a neighborhood bar. It contributes to a wonderful sense of community, and both the owners and patrons are wonderful. I have met so many of my neighbors simply by sitting outside with my dog! Being conveniently located next to the harbor, I came here with a friend for dinner pretty late on a weekend. I wasn't super hungry so I just got the appetizer mac and cheese, which comes topped with chili, pico, avocado, and sour cream. I asked for no sour cream, but when my dish came, it had sour cream on it. I told the waitress and she offered to get me a new one, but since I really hate wasting food, I just scooped all the sour cream off. The mac and cheese was alright, as it was lukewarm and the cheese didn't have much flavor. The chili was spread on top, and there were about four tiny pieces of tomato and two tiny slices of avocado. It was a lot of noodles though. Because my order was incorrect, my bill came out to be $5.83 post-tax (although normally it's $8 pre-tax), which I appreciated! read more

My husband and I were stuck in Baltimore for a bit longer than intended due to a flight delay. On a rainy Sunday afternoon, our options were limited, but I really wanted some good crab cakes. The typical touristy places were open, so we decided to veer off course and I'm glad we did. The place is "dive-y" in looks, but the beer selection and food are first class. We started out with pretzel bites- warm and gooey, which is what I was looking for coming out of the cold rain. My husband got the fish and chips and I got the crab cake platter (which he also ate some of, because the cakes are huge.) I've been quite a few places on the east coast and have had my share of crab cakes and wow- I didn't think I would find my favorite in a bar in south Baltimore. The seasoning was perfect, it was moist, melt-in-your mouth good. The tartar was great. And the Caesar and tots to boot weren't bad at all either. My husband enjoyed the fish and chips, standard fare, nothing too special, but did rave about the fries. A mixed experience. My late wife and I used to go here at least once a week. The food was far better than it had a right to be, being a tiny little Sobo bar. But the owners were always personally attentive and friendly. Being a transplanted country boy, I'd finally found a neighborhood bar/pub that I could call home. This was the case for three years. My favorite was the turkey BLT, my wife would often get the customized grilled cheese. But lately the feel of the place has gotten decidedly chilly. Whereas I used to get a handshake from the owner, now I'm lucky if I get a "Yeah?" when I sit at the bar. Not sure if they're going through some tough times or what, but after four visits with the same treatment, I gave up. A shame, because they had good beer, a rotating menu, crappy TVs but a fun vibe. I miss the old place. Please note -- CASH ONLY. They have an ATM on-site, but it's one of those little generic ones which are a major security risk. Bring some green. read more

Captain Larry's almost doesn't make my list of Balmer dive bars because... well... the food is just too good! But while the fish tacos here will definitely hit the spot, Captain Larry's still has all the other qualities of a good dive bar. A corner street entrance, a big dark wooden bar with Christmas lights behind it, nautical inspired tchotchkes, a big flat screen t.v., occasionally ragged and wobbly bar stools, a dark stamped tin ceiling, seemingly randomly placed pillars holding up the ceiling (one right in the middle of the bar), mix-matched chairs at the tables, and a big mural of Balmer on the wall with a mermaid inexplicably floating over the city. And Captain Larry's just "feels" like a neighborhood bar. Like many dive bars in Baltimore, Captain Larry's is a cash only establishment. But they have an ATM if you only come equipped with plastic. read more

I came here just for the fries, and they were soggy and not crispy enough. The seasoning was great, coarse salt and a generous amount of pepper, but I think they use frozen french fries so when they fry it, it turns out mushy and watery on the inside and soggy on the outside. It's a great place with a pirate/sailor type theme. Very family friendly (although some of the bar patrons do get annoyed by any kids running around or being obnoxiously loud). Great music always playing and the Captain Larrys family are always friendly. Breakfast is good- Sunday's are a lot of fun and always busy. I love their build-your-own grilled cheese and the hummus platter. My boyfriend likes the sliders and meatloaf. Also, try some cupcakes while you are there for dessert! read more

Finally tried Captain Larry's the other night to grab some dinner and watch the O's game. The food was good, but not spectacular. I got the fish tacos, which weren't bad. The fries, which had been mentioned in multiple reviews like they were something special, were pretty much your standard fries. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing special either. The bartender was the only server working, which was fine because it wasn't that crowded. He was very friendly and attentive. I was a bit surprised at the price of my beer, for a cash-only dive-y place like this I expected it to be a little less than it was. All in all, there was nothing wrong with Captain Larry's and I'll be back to try something else soon. I just wasn't quite as impressed as many of the other reviewers have been. read more

Tom's bloody mary's are phenomenal. He doesn't make it from a mix. He instead methodically pours (he's a former engineer) vodka, fresh horseradish, hot sauce, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and V8 hot and spicy juice, shakes it with love and serves it to you like a proud father. Awesome local bar in Baltimore. In town for a wedding we rolled in with about 15-20 people on a rainy Sunday afternoon the opening weekend of the NFL season and were welcomed with open arms. They even turned our game on one of the TV's and sang the bride and groom a special song. Great service from the bartender and the owner was very accommodating and as nice as could be. I will definitely be back when I am in Baltimore again! I didn't eat but members of our party said the crab cakes were awesome. read more

The number of stars in this review depends on how far you live from Captain Larry's. If you live within a 6-block radius of the Captain, you are like about 75% of this bar's patrons. In that case, this bar is sort of like your unofficial backyard and you go here regularly to socialize with the neighbors, usually with kids in tow.* If you are not within 6 blocks, Captain Larry's is a decent 3 or 4 star bar that may not be worth a long trek. Everything here is good (sandwiches, fish and chips, beers...dare I even say it, the margaritas?) But be real with yourself - isn't there already another bar that has good sandwiches and beers within 6 blocks of your house? In either case, the owners are great and really friendly. Pretty bummed, I've lived in Fed for 2 years now, but never had Captain Larry's. My friends have given it great reviews in the past, so I decided to give it a go tonight. I ordered the Fish & Chips from Order Up. It came pretty fast, I will say - however, I paid over $17 for just the fish & Chips and the delivery, to get reallly really REALLY soggy breaded undercooked fish. Ugh. There was like 2 pieces total, and one of them was so undercooked I couldn't eat it. The breading on the fish was extremely soggy as were the fries. I'm so bummed, and now it's past 9, I'm still hungry and disappointed. What a waste of money. Really left a bad taste in my mouth...( no pun intended ) Booo. :( read more

I live close to Captain Larry's. I know there are other places to go but I go there because IT'S GOOD and not too expensive. I eat dinner at Captain Larry's at least once per week, sometimes more. Mara has started adding some very delicious specials to an already yummy base menu. Regular favorites are the chicken sandwich, the awesome crab cakes, the Caesar salad, and the steamed shrimp. Some of my favorite recent specials have been the BLT with heirloom tomatoes and the gazpacho with fresh avocado. In addition to the food being great everyone is very friendly, the bar has a good home-town feeling and they have good drinks! I hear that they just started having "Family Night" on Tuesdays with no smoking. It's usually not overly smoky when I eat there, but it will be wonderful to have a night that's guaranteed to be smoke free. read more

I went to Captain Larry's this past Sunday during the Baltimore Grand Prix and all I can say is this little dive bar on Fort Ave may be Baltimore's best kept secret. We walked in and the place was surprisingly empty for a Sunday at 3pm. So we thought that maybe we made a bad decision. We sat ourselves at a table and ordered a couple of beers we overlooked the menu and I went with the Fish tacos and my girlfriend went with QOTD (Quiche of the Day) which was a Crab Artichoke quiche. Soon after we moved to the bar because the Race was on TV and even though the BGP was less than a mile away I felt we had the best seat in the city and I'll tell you why. While I waited for our food I ordered a Bloody Mary. I can honestly say this was the best Bloody Mary that I have had ever. It was made by hand not from a mix and to suit your taste from mild to hot. On the other side of the bar you cold see the master mixologist, adding ingredients to his concoction like a mad scientist. It was so good that it was followed by one for my girlfriend after she tasted mine and then a second for myself. When our food arrived it looked amazing. The Tacos were a huge portion of 3 with delish batter dipped fish. This is the only way to have a fish taco. And IMHO its the best place in Baltimore to get a fish taco. It was a flavor explosion. The quiche was rich, cheesy and flavorful. Everything you'd ever want from a Quiche. The real surprise was the Cesar salad hat came with the quiche it was a show stopper. I've never felt this way about a salad, but this was more than a salad this was the most decadent Cesar I've eaten it was so rich and creamy and the chef definitely had a heavy hand with the shredded cheese, which made it even better. Another surprise was instead of using the normal croutons they garnished the salad with crunchy fried tortellini - Genius! I love this place ......I love this place, loooove this place. 5 Stars......Highly recommended. Cash Only! And tip your bartender well he deserves it. read more

Great food! Service was pretty awful when we went but, benefit of the doubt, they were pretty busy. Seemed like they could have had a few extra hands. They were slow getting us beers and the check, then the check was overcharging us by quite a bit. After waiting even longer to get the right bill we ended up just having all our cash ready, had to walk it back up to them and walked out. Bummer, but food was still good. Very loud atmosphere when it's crowded, hard to talk to the people next to you. I suppose we went kind of late for dinner hour.
