We had a beautiful time swimming with fish and sea turtles! Kyla and Camila were amazing guides. They answered all of our questions, were friendly, and we felt completely safe in their hands. It was a bit hard to find their boat, but everyone in the area is super helpful and friendly so we found where we had to be quickly enough. We saw three turtles and a ton of fish. Also a sea urchin! Kyla and Camila are so professional and I really can't get over how nice they were. Also our group was tiny, only four of us. Found out about this small family owned business while searching for snorkel activities in Waikiki. Very happy that my husband and I chose this one. Being on a smaller boat gets you much closer to the water and makes it much more personal and intimate. We were able to ask individual questions of the captain and host. Because the boat is smaller than the larger commercial tours, we were able to choose how much time we spent snorkeling and opt to try to go out further for the chance to see whales. We booked the turtle excursion from Captain Max Boat Tours through our hotel in Waikiki. What an amazing choice! We got to the pier (B) and filled out the online waivers by accessing a QR code. Soon we were getting on the boat and getting prepared for our snorkel session. Captain Max and Kyla We're amazing! They were super friendly and we chatted on the way out to the turtle area in the water. We listened to tunes on the way back, and we're given some complimentary water or juice. Captain Max even took some photos of our group. There is also an option for Kyla to GoPro your party, but the girls had underwater cameras so we didn't choose that option. But the time we had was amazing! We received great instruction in order to have the best experience. Kyla brought snacks for the fish so we would have great views and be surrounded by schools of fish, then let us know when she saw a turtle that we may not have seen. What majestic creatures! It was so great seeing them in groups near the bottom, and come up even to the surface of the water. Then one of the guys that Kyla knows showed us an octopus that he got, and that was really cool. This excursion is great for those with and without experience. It helps if you are at least a moderate swimmer, but there are life jackets another flotation devices available to help you along. My husband and I did the turtle canyon tour with captain max in August of 2022. We arrived at the Ala Qai Boat Harbor about 30 minutes before the start of the excursion. There was unfortunately no sign for Captain Max and we were worried we were at the wrong location. As soon as the tour was due to start, someone came out and found us. Make sure to fill out your waivers online. It'll speed up the process. We chose Captain Max because of the of the great reviews on multiple review websites and because it had a 6 people max rule. This allowed for everything to move along quicker and provided a more personal excursion. Once at the turtle canyon, you'll see all the other boats circling the area. All the boats seem to keep to their own designated space. There were enough turtles and fish for everyone to see that there isn't a rush of people going to one area. The guide on our tour pointed out fish, turtles, some white tip reef sharks that passed by, and got us a sea urchin to see up close. The captain and guides feed the fish and at times there will be a frenzy of fish all around. Don't forget to bring your gopro. Captain Max provided fins, snorkel gear, and life vests. We didn't see any pool noodles, but that doesn't mean there wasn't. We read there was water and juice, but we were not offered any and we didn't ask. Overall, we enjoyed our excursion with Captain Max and would recommend them to anyone who's looking for an intimate outing. read more

I made this spontaneous decision to go snorkeling and was surprisingly invited to the following boat tour beginning an hour later! Which I loved! Luckily for me, the other couple didn't show up so I got my own private tour. We had so much fun cruising through the waters and I was given the best experience from Jordan and Alex. Jordan was super knowledgeable and gave me a lot of new information on turtles and fish, the oceans, and on coral reefs. Alex was a great captain and made the ride as equally safe as thrilling! Best experience during our trip to Honolulu. Our captain Garrett was warm and welcoming and dive master Savannah ensured we saw plenty of turtles! One of the main things I enjoyed about this trip was the small group size. Our boat could've have fit 6 people however only the 3 in our group was present so it was basically a private tour. When we got to the snorkeling site we saw other tour groups of 20+ people with maybe one guide in the water. I definitely felt like we would not have as great of a time. Savannah also helped our friend who wasn't as strong of a swimmer through the strong current. We decided to purchase the GoPro video package even though we did have a GoPro on us. And it's a good thing we purchased it because the GoPro kept malfunctioning the entire tour! The only thing we maybe would have changed was the timing. There were morning and afternoon tours. We did the afternoon tour and the visibility under water wasn't very clear making it difficult to see all the way down into turtle canyon. I imagine it would be much clearer if one were to go during the morning tour. Despite this we had a blast and would definitely do it again if we find ourselves in Honolulu again! read more

FANTASTIC! Capt. Camila and Devin are excellent guides. Only having six people (maximum) in a group is a HUGE advantage over some of the other tours. We were able to have a more engaging and personal experience. The Nautilus is a very cool (fast) Navy Seal type vessel, but a smooth ride. You'll be snorkeling in the water minutes after leaving the harbor. If you ask nicely, they'll even do some high speed "donuts" if your group is up for the thrill. Turtle Canyon does not disappoint. Tons of turtles, fish and sea life to see and swim with. Just amazing. Do yourself a favor and opt for the photo package. Devin did a great job snapping photos of everyone in our group amongst the turtles and fish. Highly recommended. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I was getting nervous due to the timing. We were told to check in 30 minutes before the start (start was 7:30AM) and we were not checked in until 7:28AM. Not a huge deal but we were wondering if it got cancelled. It all worked out. The boat is a zodiac so it's smaller, lighter, and much faster. The ride out was enjoyable and only 4 guests so it was a lot more intimate. We saw plenty of turtles and were out there for about an hour. The area itself was overcrowded with other massive tours but you can't control that. I would recommend Captain Max to be used by anyone for your needs. read more

EPIC ADVENTURE! Captain Devon and Alex were amazing yesterday on our Turtle Canyon snorkeling adventure. They were very informative, accommodating and made our trip amazing and unforgettable. We took a turtle canyon snorkeling tour with Captain Max. Our skipper, Camila was amazing. She spotted a dolphin pod and took us near enough that the dolphins surrounded us and started playing around our boat. We got amazing pics, and she even sent us some videos she took from her phone.
