I am not sure what's going on here, but this is the second time in a row, the food was terrible and so was the service. The Husband and I decided to go out for Valentines day, and we arrived about 5:20 and asked if we could eat upstairs said no, we don't seat upstairs till 5:30. (??!!! HELLO? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!) So she says pick any table in here and I'll follow you. There were only three tables left to sit at....one by the door (UGH!) Another next to several couples and had kids or two tables put together. That's where we reluctantly sat for a supposed romantic dinner. As soon as she gave us menus another lady came over and said "You cant sit there, we have to save it for a group of 4 or more people." So guess where we sat.By the door! Bad move people! We no longer wanted to be there. We order the chicken Quesadillas appetizer with a couple of beers. She brings the little corn muffin things with no butter. (good Job) The Beers were fine. Appetizer was sub standard.All the chicken was dried out and very hard to chew. Then the meal came. Husband gets the soft Tacos which he always has and they put salmon in it. I think he ate 3-4 bites and ate the rest of my meal. I ordered the Chicken wrap, and I'm not real sure what the deal is with them bringing the plates out to your table covered, but from the condition of mine, I was made to think it was made and sat up on the counter till husbands meal was done. My fries were barely warm and the wrap was just like the appetizer. The chicken was dry and tough. I had to get some ranch to drench it with just to swallow it. Bad form Guys! I have gone to this restaurant for the last time. We have business in New Bern every few months. Why oh why did we not wait at MJ's? Last visit the steak was so completely unappetizing-overcooked dry worthless. We went for lunch yesterday the waiter was great trying so hard-he was attentive- polite-we never waited for refills, etc.(side note to wait staff:when anyone says Thank you the reply is Your welcome. NOT- no problem) The popcorn spicy & sweet shrimp was firstly so small blink and you miss it, it wasn't that spicy nor was it sweet. The broccoli was excellent. But we go for the entire meal not a portion of it. Unless the owners change something we do not see this place staying. Sad because when they first opened it was great. I thought this was a pretty typical restaurant with pretty typical pricing. We walked in and asked if there was a table for 2 available and the hostess said it would be 30 minutes. So we asked if there was top deck outside seating available and she was like "yeah we can seat you immediately". Great that we could be seated quickly but surprising she wouldn't mention that without prompting. I ordered the burger with grilled chicken instead and the chicken was so good and tender. The fries were battered and amazingly crisp. the fried pickles were pretty good but they were chips so the breading was a bit heavy but nice and crunchy. My husband ordered the NY strip. He said it was a pretty fair price for what he got. He said it was cooked to his liking in the center but he wished there had been some char on the outside of the steak. The sweet potato was amazing. Our innkeeper in town made a reservation for us at this place Sunday nite. When we got there, five minutes early, the hostess said that they are no longer accepting any more reservations tonite. What? How do you not "accept" a reservation if it was already successfully made only an hour ago? This place seems to be run by kids, not professionals. What amazes me about Captain Ratty's--aside from the great food--is how hard it is to describe to someone. I'll start with what I know: Captain Ratty's has some quality seafood. There are no two ways around that. What's more, the restaurant is smack in the middle of beautiful, historic downtown New Bern, and walking distance from plenty of highlights (not to mention easy parking!). The restaurant itself has a really eclectic vibe. Not in the decor or any sort of overall theme, but in the building itself. There are multiple rooms throughout the three-stories, and each space has it's own vibe. I've been probably 10 times, and aside from a few repeats on the rooftop, I think I've sat in every room at least once. Part traditional nautical, part sports bar, part rustic brick revitalization, part piano bar--there really is something for everyone. And if you time the weather (and the crowds) just right, eating on the rooftop during a warm, coastal NC sunset is unlike anything else. Heck, it's even worth waiting through the crowds. read more

For a place that references the name of a rodent, this place is pretty darn good! My manager and I dined here after a long day in the office. This place is in the middle of downtown New Bern and pretty typical of a seafood place on the water: nautical themed decorations, flags, etc. They have a rooftop deck which would be a great place to sit, especially on a clear warm night. I ordered the fresh fish of the day - blackened wahoo. I've never heard of wahoo before, as I'm somewhat of a fish noob. But with a name like that, how can you not want to try it!! So my two big chunks of wahoo came blackened and season with green beans and mash'taters. The wahoo was really good - flaky, juicy, mild in taste. There was so much wahoo, I couldn't even finish it. Unfortunately, I didn't think leftover wahoo would be very good, so some went to waste. Did I mention I really like the word WAHOO?!? The beans were decent, perhaps a bit salty. The taters were, well, taters. They seem to have a good beer list, although I didn't partake. If I had known they had an ESB available I would have certainly tried it. Maybe next time. read more

This was the first place I decided to try during my roadtrip out to New Bern and it turned out to be a pretty good choice. Their selection of food is pretty vast- I split a half pound order of steamed shrimp with my friend and I got the southwestern salad and a mug of their new england clam chowder (which was absolutely spectacular) and my friend ordered a crab cake sandwich that came with fries. The waitress brought out cornbread to munch on while we waited for our food. All our food was fine and delicious and I think they're pretty okay with their pricing. Had a gift card for this place and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed. Service was good and the food was damn good. Went out on a limb and had the mussels appetizer- first time trying mussels. The white wine-based broth they were in was delicious and the mussels very tasty. Had blackened mahi mahi with green beans for the entree. The fish was excellent. Wife had fried green tomatoes for her appetizer and a Needham salad for her entree. She enjoyed them both. Skip ordering the fish and chips and mussels as they were average. The wait staff was very accommodating and friendly. We live here and decided to have a late lunch after running around all morning. I normally do salads with fish or shrimp. My husband got a burger so I went with one also. It truly was terrible my cheddar cheese was a cold slice not even melted, the burger fell apart, very dry.. and cold. It tasted just like a frozen cheap one you microwave. However, the staff was wonderful.. there's no excuse. The place was empty with one gentleman besides us in the whole restaurant. I came here with my husband after finding it being recommended online as where to eat in New Bern. The online reviews were not bad so I gave it a shot. We were seated by staff that was nice enough but everyone seemed confused, like they never sat down customers before. Then the tables are so packed together I could basically touch elbows with our neighbors. Service was good and timely. Then the food came. The calamari was okay. The side salad could have come out of a bag from a grocery store. The catch of the day (grilled salmon) was absolutely flavorless along with the garlic mashed potatoes. No salt, pepper, or garlic to be tasted at all. I could have just stayed home and made a better salmon and mashed potatoes myself. I ordered shrimp and grits because everyone in the south raves about shrimp and grits. My plate was 99% covered in grits, had maybe 8 shrimp, a pile of bacon bits slathered in BBQ sauce, and was completely coated in shredded cheese. It was messy. The shrimp were unseasoned, of course, and the dish was just so heavy it was like eating cheesey glue. I really tried to like it but I was really just shoveling the stuff in my mouth to be polite. I could not eat the remaining 90% of the plate. I paid, we left (with a take out box destined for the bin) and will not be back. I will definitely be more cautious about online reviews. read more

This place is barely ok. I would not recommend going here to anyone, not even for seafood. I've had better meals from TV dinner. My shrimp was over cooked to the point of rubber. Seating is uncomfortable. And they were out of at least 2 beers on tap. Maybe just a bad night in general, but we sat on street level this one particular time and an older gentlemen was on the phone by the bar complainig about another downtown business. I wish I could get back the last 1.5 hours of my life and spend them in any other restaurant. We're locals and decided to try the breakfast buffet. We waited about 25 minutes and were taken upstairs where we were met with a buffet line full of empty containers. The only items available were eggs, sausage, and a few hard biscuits. All other options were empty. We had to go back and forth to the buffet line multiple times to get an item as it was brought out. It took 30 minutes for grits to come out. The eggs are like what you get in a free hotel breakfast--not fresh. Sausage was dried out. Biscuits seemed to be frozen and were flavorless and hard. The omelette station was lacking stock of ingredients. They were chronically out of plates, bowls, and syrup. We had to flag down a waitress to get a refill and our check. No one ever checked on us at all. The kitchen staff coming in and out with food were super unprofessional, complaining about working too hard and having to walk up and down the stairs. While this was quite the memorable experience, we definitely won't be returning!!! read more

It was a very bad experience. We went there for my grandmother's birthday. First there was roaches running across the table then we found them in the salad dressing. The guy said he was sorry that they spray every Wednesday night but they should not still be running around in Saturday. So he said he would pay for our drinks and kids meals but in the end he only paid for our drinks. So at the end when we got the bill we didn't know that we would have to give them a 20% tip from all our checks because they said with ten or more peopl e they do it so we had to tip them for the roaches. Low Country Boil was absolutely the worst tasting food. No spices used as described and served in a small dish of water. No salt, no old bay, no pepper. Rotten clams filled with dirt given to me. Shrimp scampi was bland, gritty, hard undercooked noodles. No salt. Served like a soup in horrible tasting water like broth. Fried pickles were ok. Hard to mess those up though. More water than broth. Seating outside was followed by 10000 flies coming after you. Other than the fact the waiter, Jerome was friendly and up best. I would have totally complained. Well , their menu not much like authentic seaford restaurants. The clam chowder was tasty. Now its been over 30 mins ,waiting on our main order. A Alpine salad and a Ruben. My wife liked the Ruben. I understand that we are in a pandemic and there isn't regular seating but the wait staff didn't check on us for 10 minutes after we sat dow . Not even to let us know she'll be within a few minutes. We asked for the kids food to be out as soon as possible. My gf has a special needs daughter. She asked a different waitress if we could at least have a banana. We were told of course I will be right back. She went by our table twice still didn't bring it. She looked at my gf and finally asked if she still wanted the banana because the food is on the way out. It would of been nice to just been told sorry we're taking so long I will see what is taking so long for a banana. It's beyond frustrating, three kids, we were visiting from out of town. Went for their huge cup of New England Clam Chowder which is the best anywhere. Mrs. Shirt and I also spilt the Bay Scallops which were fried lightly and to perfection. Didn't have the mashed potatoes we wanted so went with fries which were medicore. Cole slaw side was too vinegery. Quality of Service: Since we got there right as they opened we were the only customers so got great service. Cleaniness:This is an old converted bookstore and is very small but the heavy tourist traffic and bar activity makes it less then emaculate but it's cleanliness is acceptable. Chowder cups and scallop size are huge but...Tourist prices. Way overpriced and charged us extra just to spilt an entree.
