Great Saturday Night dinner choice. With the weather being so nice the restaurant was busy. The wait wasn't bad at all. Our server came over with the warmest smile thanking us for coming in and introducing himself. His name is Justyn. He took care of us !!! His compassion for his job was pretty awesome to experience. I noticed that same great spirit with his other customers as well. I haven't even talked about the food because I was so impressed with our server. Thanks again Justyn. NOW, I ordered the small flounder dinner with onion rings and coleslaw. There were 2- nice size pieces of golden crispy brown fillets that tasted like fried seasoned fish at a cookout The hit is "Always" the hush puppies that look like onion rings. Theres a hint of sweetness with that special one of a kind flavor. The coleslaw was chopped fine and Delicious. The Onion Rings need ATTENTION. They looked pretty good on the plate, but there was hardly any onion inside. Flat and NO Flavor. Definitely cheap frozen rings. Captain Tom's use to have thick cut, excellent seasoned battered onion rings that you would expect in a southern seafood restaurant. Fire that thing, OR DOES SHE EVEN WORK HERE???? I'll be frank with you, that loud big girl who never does anything gets on my nerves. She doesn't tip any of her servers, is constantly stealing food, I think the last time we were there she drank ketchup straight from the bottle. Be honest Captain, you're losing money and the ship's going down. Service is usually fairly good, however having that thing across the restaurant really ruins the experience, Every. Single. We visited on a Friday afternoon. Upon entering, we were blasted by a very unpleasant, fishy smell. Yes, I realize this is a seafood restaurant, however, this order was very unpleasant, not at all enticing. This should've been our indication to turn around and find someplace else. The inside has never been updated since probably the 1970s, old, dirty floor, etc. The service was marginal, she kept forgetting about us, even having to chase her down to get our check, although references were made to the possibility that customers would leave without paying. Captain Tom's is always a family favorite. We drive here from Glen Allen and it's worth it. Even my grandmother, who was very picky, loved the food here. After visiting a distillery, my parents and I ended up here after another place in the area had a two hour wait. We only had two wait about 10 minutes and was seated in a booth in a bustling area of the restaurant. The service was quick and professional, the food is fresh, hot and well prepared. The prices are great and the portions are really good. Only thing I'd like to see is the addition of real butter. The peculiar tasting spread is not for me. read more

We have been coming here for 13 years and up until now have always had a good meal. And our server was Tamika? and she could not have been a worst server. The whole place is different than it used to be. They used to have a great & experienced wait staff. The food and service used to be very good. My croaker looked like they whacked the head and tail off. Then threw it in the fryer. It was so full of bones, I would feed it to a house cat! When our server asked why I wasn't eating it, I told her "it's not fit for humans" her answer left me fiberglassed. She so said "Oh I thought you knew how it came!" WTF! This is a local staple and many people love this place but as a guy that grew up in Baltimore around bonafide seafood places there are a lot of better choices.. today I had the oyster soup. It tasted like warm paint thinner. I typically wouldn't mind if the price point was under 10, but in this case it was over 10 the salad, however, was pretty good but you can't mess up something you pull out of a bag many other locals come in for their specials if you like fried stuff then this might be the place for you One of the things I will say is the service is always above and beyond this place has great potential if they buy quality seafood and hire a cooking staff. read more

I came in an hour before closing and they greeted me with a smile. My order did not take long and everything was hot and fresh. My waitress was super attentive and told me not to rush because I had plenty of time to sit and enjoy. My eyes were obviously bigger than my belly when I ordered because I only ate my scallops, some of the backed potato and a few popcorn shrimp. Not recommend. 75% of the staff was grumpy. However, my server Tina was very kind and I enjoyed her company. I arrived at 7:40p (google maps said they close at 9p) but they actually close at 8:30p. There was tension in the air from the moment I walked in. Multiple staff members (including an elderly woman who appeared to be the owner or manager) walked around grumbling about how they wanted to go home and to hurry up and get the remaining tables (customers) cleared. The clam chowder was very thin, bland and boiling hot; which ironically made it longer for me to eat . I'm on a side of town not used to, a bit older so the atmosphere here is a bit dated, not crowded at all at 6:30 which worried me, but had seafood and that's what I wanted. I got a beer at the bar and looked at the menu. Trying to not go as fattening as I can ( I wanted the fried platter) - so opted for the grilled platter. Just something about a grilled platter at a local seafood place that just says NO- get it FRIED- so I did get grilled platter and their hush puppies. The hush puppies were to die for!!! Made in a circle like an onion ring, I actually ordered onion rings and she said- if you saw that other plate- it was hush puppies. I think 3 to an order, you know they are homemade, they were delicious. !!! The platter had fish, scallops, shrimp, the deviled crab ( never liked those but not the heart of the platter), and the hush puppies and it was a meal. The clam chowder was just okay, pretty standard fare, but the whitefish and popcorn shrimp meal was fantastic! Very generous portion of shrimp, delicious fish, fried okra side was good, as was the baked potato and hubs' coleslaw was just how I like it. I'll definitely be back. read more

This review had way more potential until we heard "Make Sure They Pay" We were not greeted politely, we immediately was placed in the back by the restroom . Was very grateful when our server came over - Kelly was her name. Kelly treated us with the upmost respect and was very very kind. She was new to the staff and we could tell because of her friendly demeanor. Kelly gave us great recommendations, and friendly conversation. We decided to place a To-go order. All was well, Kelly brought us the food to check to ensure it was correct, from across the room we hear "Make sure they pay" We can tell Kelly was shocked by the statement, we were as well. The other staff requested that she remove the bag from the table- and place it at the register. At this moment I didn't even care to finish my dinner, I immediately wanted to pay and get out of there. I was very uncomfortable. I am not from the area, but the friend I was with lives locally. I've been going to Captain Tom's for 30 years and have always enjoyed the food and the service most of the time. I understand the cost of doing business and was not bothered when they recently started a service charge for paying with a card. Here is the problem, it is illegal to charge a service fee for paying with a "debit card". I would suggest that the new policy ensures that those who pay with a debit card are NOT charged a service fee. read more

This past weekend I had the displeasure of visiting this restaurant. My friend came to visit for the weekend and we decided to try a new place. When we entered the workers at the front register failed to acknowledge us and the two seated servers were slow in deciding who was going to seat us. When we finally we sat we requested a seating change from booth to table to which we were sat at a table directly across from the bathroom. Our server Kelly was amazing and this review has NOTHING to do with her. The remaining employees were rude and dismissive. I placed a to go order and Kelly brought it to the table for me to verify the order was correct. The same young waitress who drug her feet to seat us looked at Kelly and said make sure "they pay". Her tone was condescending and quite frankly rude. You have to pay at the register so she would've seen the bright yellow unpaid ticket in our bag. However it was the undertone in her statement that ultimately made us leave early. In a last minute attempt to possibly salvage our experience the same young waitress tried to make small talk as we checked out. But at this point I was not interested in returning even though the food was decent the customer service was subpar. Except for Kelly! While I understand, seating has to be limited but I HATE being seated at a booth. I let that be known. Yet, still seated at a booth. Staff really needs to listen rather than doing whatever they want. The prices have escalated. You can no longer double up on the selections in create your own platter. Many of the meals have increased by $10+. After waiting 30 minutes to be seated at a booth that I didn't want and another 20 minutes for a waiter to come to then be told that I can't choose what I want on a platter. They are ripping people off. Prices have went sky high, but I understand that in. This sucky economy. Still ever debit or credit charge has a $2.75 surcharge. On a $27.59 meal that's 10%!!!!! Credit card charges are between 2-4. %. . Please don't ask for a lemon wedge with your seafood, that's another 50 cents. The food has sucked here for awhile, but the other half likes it. I feel this business is price gouging! Unreal! People will take it out of their tips, which is lousy on hard working waitstaff. ***FOOD POISONING*** WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! I dined here on 12/03/2024 with my husband and mother and the food was beyond disgusting. The scallops were so tough I could barely cut them with a knife and, much to my dismay, the two that I did manage to choke down made me violently ill by the time I got home. Furthermore, the frog legs were undercooked, and the oysters were 30 seconds from being burnt to a crisp. I called the restaurant, asked for the owner, Brenda, and was then put on hold. After nearly 15 minutes of waiting, I asked my husband to call. He told the person who answered the phone that I was still waiting on the other line, and they responded by saying, "Brenda doesn't know your wife and so she's not coming to the phone," and hung up on him. This made me livid. I hung up and called back and insisted on speaking to Brenda. She finally came to the phone and asked me what my problem was. I explained our experience in great detail and she told me, and I quote, "Unless you go to the emergency room and get a stool sample to prove our food made you sick, I'm not giving you a refund." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Save your money, and stomachs, and eat elsewhere! read more

Visited Wednesday evening, arrived 7:45pm, they stop allowing customers in at 8pm. We said there were 3 others on their way and would arrive shortly, we asked if we could eat and they said yes. They seated us and the waitress bought us hush puppies and took our drink order. I suppose it was the manager who came and said we could not eat and had to leave. We said the others were at the door trying to get in (they locked them at 8pm). When we said the others were here she turned and abruptly said, "the kitchen is closed, leave!" I have never been treated so rudely, if you close at 8:pm then stop letting customers in at 7 or 7:30! We have eaten here before with no issue, we definitely not return! We left and went to Croakers Spot a few miles away and had a much better meal with staff that were fantastic and friendly! The salmon is nicely seasoned and well cooked, and the sweet potato side was hot and "melt in your mouth". With the mixed vegetables side, it was a perfect Sunday meal. This place was packed on a Sunday. Other times the parking lot is empty. We didn't have to wait too long for a seat. Staff were friendly but they were understaffed. Our waitress was so sweet. All of our food did not come out together. They serve homemade hush puppies for each table, they weren't bad , they are shaped like onion rings. My meal was fair. Veggies were good. Crab cake filled with mostly filler. Fish was great ( broiled trout). The scallops were aweful. They were cold , not crunchy since they were fried and they were ere not thick , white, and meaty on the inside. Cooking could improve. With time and these improvements they may get better railings. Many people were there for the fried fish (trout, catfish), they seemed to enjoy their meals. read more

My mom and I have always loved this place, but it needs to be shut down to get the roach issue taken care of. she went to dinner there last night and had roaches in her booth and crawling up the wall beside her. if that is what the dining room is like, I can't imagine how bad the roaches are in the kitchen. getting the restaurant "sprayed" once a week is obviously not working. read more

It's been awhile since I have left a restraunt hungry but from here we are leaving hungry. Food was sub par fries were cold popcorn shrimp was cold flounder was not very good. When we told the waitress about our sub par meal no manager came to visit at all and then when we paid our check at the register we also mentioned we now have to find somewhere to eat because the food was terrible and we were ignored when we said that so needless to say we will never return. It has been years since we have been here because the quality and service had gone downhill so badly. My daughter and her friend ate here about a month ago and said it was delicious..... so my husband, daughter and I went back for another try. My husband and I both had the fried shrimp and scallops and my daughter had fried shrimp and broiled scallops. 6 of each.... cooked perfectly. I had a baked potato and my daughter had a sweet potato and both were delicious. Hubby had fries and they were ok. The only negative was the salad. The lettuce was looking a bit rough and was soaking wet. The hush puppies were delicious and our waiter brought us a big basket as soon as we sat down. He was very attentive and we were in and out in no time. Quite happily full. The restaurant had been remodeled and they have added more booths that are high backed so you felt quite private.
