I decided to stop in on my lunch break for a quick bite to eat. I am absolutely obsessed with Calamari, so I ordered that as my entree. It was absolutely amazing! The calamari was really fresh, and was fried to golden brown perfection in Captain Woody's batter. It came with a side of Ponzu Sauce (citrus-based sauce with a tart-tangy flavor similar to a vinaigrette). Wow! So good! It complimented my Calamari wonderfully. A++ Now, I will say- you need to get here early (like before noon) if you want to get an outdoor table during lunch hour. I arrived at about 12:04, and was informed by the hostess that the outdoor tables were all taken. So I sat indoors.. and when I arrived there were only 2 other tables occupied inside. Within 10 minutes, ALL the other tables were full. I guess everyone already knows this seafood spot is legit! I can't wait to come back and try something else off the menu. Wow. While visiting family in Bluffton, they suggested that we go to Captain Woodys. I had the shrimp po boy and it was so good. Captain Woodys...... Had a bad experience today at Captain Woody's, a long-time favorite hang-out in my hometown of Bluffton, SC. I met a friend there (also a life-long local) earlier today to catch up. We were greeted by a waitress and my friend ordered a coffee and I had hoped to order a beer but the waitress never came back to take my order. We sat there for at least 45 minutes. During that time the restaurant became busy and then a heavy-set woman who seemed to be the manager came up and essentially said if we weren't ordering dinner we had to leave because they needed the table. I told her I was nearly a 60-year local and she was being very disrespectful to long-time customers but she didn't seem to care. Just a short 15 minuets drive from Montage Palmetto Bluffs. It was worth getting out of the resort to eat lunch here. I really wanted to try oysters since I seen so many along the May River on my boating excursion.The oyster was great, very light in flavor, not as briny and plump but overall delicious. I also had the crab-cake sandwich which was bomb and fulfilling. The potato salad side was amazing! Also I saw a table of 4 and they all ordered the crab soup and I wish I tried it! Even though we have been in this area plenty of times and finally just moved down here, this was our first trip to Captain Woodys. It was well worth the visit. The place is always jammed during tourist season, so we waited until things finally slowed close to Labor Day. It was a surprisingly pleasant evening so w3 grabbed a seat on the porch, with a lovely spot to people watch and plenty of fans. Our server was prompt, attentive and even was sure to make sure to share the specials. We started with a cold beer and a gin and tonic, oddly no mojitos. Our appetizer was the fresh peeled steamed shrimp, a half pound was plenty for my wife and I. The spice dusting managed to sneak through to the shrimp beneath the shells and they were quite tasty. One or two were not cleaned fully, but things slip through sometimes. I had the 3 choice fried combo of flounder, shrimp and oysters. The shrimp were again fresh like our appetizer and the flounder was fresh as well. They were all fried nice,y, I think the oysters lacked something, perhaps they were previously frozen? My wife had the shrimp pasta, which was a huge plate of fettuccine and shrimp with a creamy sauce. It looked delightful though I had to save room for my own meal. Somehow we were talked into a chocolate cake dessert, though I was stuffed and had more of the fresh whipped cream then the dense sweet cake. I will certainly add Captain Woodys to our Bluffton rotation, though I will not wait during touristy season, too many places serving the same fresh fish to wait. read more

Place is a bit small so although they can manage larger parties you may want to call ahead to confirm or risk waiting a bit. The good news is that they have a large rooftop bar where you can hang out and get drinks and some food while you wait. Food was generally good. The fried oysters were tasty but a bit on the small side so the ratio of breading to oyster favored the breading. Most of the fish ordered by the table was tasty and seamed fresh. Service was good although by the time we were seated it was late and we were one of the last groups in the place. Would go here again if in the area. read more

7/11/2020- I ended up here by chance since I had plans to go to HHI but the traffic was gridlocked to get on to the island. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by this place. The food and the service were excellent. There was little to no wait when we arrived around 6:30 PM on a Saturday night. I had the shrimp and grits which is a dish I generally order at these coastal seafood establishments. This was really on par with the best I have ever had. A generous portion and full of flavor. It was simply delicious. Also had a 1/2 dozen of the steamed oysters. It didn't say which region they were from, but they were very good. I will be back here on a future trip to the Bluffton/HHI area! read more

You need a night out? You must visit this place. Funny, I don't live here but I visit the area often and when I can suggest to the locals a place they haven't been before, I love it! Tucked away in the old town square, this place shines. You can hear the live music as soon as you get out of your car. It's usually only a 1-man or small group playing, but hey, it's free! Dine downstairs or walk upstairs to the partially open air (but covered) bar and enjoy friendly bartender (who know how to pour) and ever-changing live music. First time here at the end of April. Just a short wait on a Thursday afternoon. Seating is a little tight. It looks like they can pack a few in here. We had Chris as our server and he did a great job even though he was very busy. I started with the clam chowder and I was very impressed. I have never had clams that tender. I also ordered the redfish sandwich. Never had redfish before. It really did not have a lot of flavor, or it is a very mild fish, and was pretty dense but it made a good sandwich. My wife had the cod sandwich and she had no complaints. Coleslaw is good, potato salad is good, and the he-crab soup was good but a little spicy for me. Palmetto amber was a good beer for the meal. Cancelled our reservations for another place as we got a tip from someone at Hilton Head National. Guy stated this was his favorite restaurant in the area. Ordered the fried platter with shrimp, oysters, and flounder. It came with fries, slaw, and hushpuppies. All fried items were perfect and tasty. Plump shrimp, juicy oysters, and the flounder was flaky as should be expected. The hushpuppies had a light jalapeño flavor which was nice. The low for me was the cole slaw which I didn't care for but not really a big deal. About $45 with tax for 2 of us including iced tea. Overall no regrets and wouldn't hesitate to come back. Maybe we'll get lucky next time and get to eat on the upstairs patio. If you're looking for fried seafood, this is a great spot. Service was fast and friendly and the location in what may be downtown Bluffton was nice. A few small quaint shops including an actual Ben and Jerry's. I ordered the LOW COUNTRY BOIL with Shrimp, corn, sausage & red skin potatoes for $15.99. You can also add cluster of crab legs for $7.99. The portion was large and was cooked well, it was seasoned with old bay, although it could have been a little more seasoned. Per the description, I expected boiled peel and eat shrimp, with corn on the cob. Everything was ready to eat, served like soup. The sausage was sliced and the corn was cut off of the cob, and the shrimp was already peeled.
