Sea Shack is one of my favorite places to go to when in HH. The restaurant is very casual and truly matches what comes to mind when you think of a seafood shack. It's counter service and byob. Tucked away off the main roads with excellent service and delicious food. I've never had a bad experience here whatsoever. Everything I have ordered has been delicious. Service was great, staff was very friendly however, the food was atrocious. We ordered two seafood platters -- one shrimp and fish platter and one fish and chips platter. We also added on an order of fried scallops. The scallops were very greasy and the breading did not stick to them. As soon as I picked one up, the scallop fell out leaving the breading in my hand. There was NO and I mean NO seasoning on anything. No salt at all, completely bland. I didn't like that they didn't disclose that they are using Swai fish in place of Catfish. The Sea Shack is just good ole' seafood. My grilled shrimp were perfect. The collards were excellent. The hush puppies were just right. The coleslaw was my least favorite thing on my plate, and it was very good. My mom loved her fried shrimp. The guys ordered the last of the grouper and said it was "nondescript." We arrived at 5:30 pm in the shoulder season and had zero wait. Those who arrived at 6 pm had about a 10 minute wait. I hear that in the summer the line looks like Disney World. The ambiance is beach casual with plastic table clothes and styrofoam plates. The tables have everything you need. It's not a place to linger. Go out for ice cream to do that. read more

This place is a great hidden gem. Depending on the time of day there could be a line or limited seating . Everything is made fresh to order right in front of you. There are the fresh catch of the day on the board and the daily favorites . We went with the can't decide . A combo plate that lets you have a little bit of everything . Wish we had found this place sooner we would have eaten lunch here both days . Big portions easily can share and sample as a group. The rice was tasty like a dirty rice flavor, cold slaw was crunchy and fresh the hush puppies were crispy and slightly sweet scallops were tender and calamari not chewy. The only down side were the conch fritters , tasty , but not much conch in them for some I've had in the past I'd pick something else on the next run. read more

What a find for no frills, delicious seafood! We enjoyed both blackened and fried - trying fish and shrimp. Both had great flavor with reasonable portions. The hush puppies are mild and very much to our taste. I would suggest asking for lightly blackened or the seasoning can overpower. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly. The whole experience was positive from start to finish. I would highly recommend! Photo is the shrimp appetizer. My Wife and I decided we wanted some seafood after leaving the beach earlier in the evening and decided to stop at The Sea Shack based on the 4.6 star reviews and some of the photos posted online. Unfortunately, we were sadly disappointed. I ordered the crab cake and shrimp platter combo with fries along with green beans. The crab cake was paper-thin like a pancake, the green beans tasted like they were cooked in old grease, the cole slaw had no (zero) flavor, the fries were meh, the shrimp was decent and overall the portions were small. The Sea Shack appears to be a really cool local spot but the food was truly underwhelming. If you want seafood while on Hilton Head Island, I would recommend Hudson's Seafood House or Skull Creek Dockside. read more

The Sea Shack has become one of our regular stops when visiting Hilton Head. It is extremely popular, and for good reason. They open at 5:00 p.m., and if you arrive much after that, you can expect a significant wait. We usually try to get there around 4:30, and even then there can already be a line. The food is good and has traditionally been a very good value, although prices have gone up noticeably over the last two or three years. On our most recent visit, I had the flounder and shrimp. It was good, but not quite as good as some of the meals we've had there in the past. Don't come expecting an upscale Hilton Head atmosphere or waterfront dining. That's really not what The Sea Shack is about. What it does offer is a unique, casual, no-frills seafood experience that has been operated by the same people for many years and has developed a very loyal following. Even with the higher prices and a meal this time that I would describe as good rather than great, I would still recommend The Sea Shack to anyone looking for casual seafood and a distinctly local Hilton Head experience. The food is the highlight here. Hush puppies are especially good. We share a grouper fish sandwich. 10 of us ate here and they accommodated us well. It took a while to get all the food but what can you expect with a large group? It is a shack so don't expect fancy surroundings, but they have a lot of signs on the wall from awards they've received. Worth a visit. read more

My wife got the crab cake platter and I got fish and shrimp, blackened. When you come in have your card ready and an idea of what sounds good to you. Most items for a platter are under $20 and it comes with slaw, hush puppies, and a side (we got salad). After you order you can grab a table. The food was excellent and it's a lot of food. To be honest, I had a few bites left; I just couldn't eat any more. If you are looking for a great seafood dinner, and want to control the budget, this is your place. read more

I don't usually leave negative reviews, but I think it's important for potential customers to know what to expect. First, the prices listed online did not match what we were actually charged. That made it difficult to know what we were spending ahead of time. The only reason there was a line out the door was because they limit the number of orders because they only have one cook. While I understand wanting to avoid overwhelming the kitchen, it's something to be aware of if you're planning to eat here during busy times. Get there early. The seating is picnic-style, which may or may not be your preference. If not everyone in your group likes seafood, I would recommend looking elsewhere. The burgers we received appeared to be frozen patties and were dry. For larger groups, be aware that you'll likely need to place one large order all at once, and they do not provide an itemized receipt. That made it difficult to verify our bill. When we compared what we paid to the menu prices on DoorDash, our total was higher than we paid at dinner, which was frustrating. We read about this restaurant before coming to Hilton Head and were genuinely excited to try it. Unfortunately, there wasn't a single part of the experience that met our expectations. The problems started before we even walked through the door. Our waitress snapped at my elderly mother, and in hindsight, that should have been our sign to leave. Instead, we gave the restaurant the benefit of the doubt because of its overwhelmingly positive reviews. The prices are slightly lower than some other seafood restaurants in the area, but not enough to justify the significant drop in quality. Compared to other places we visited, the value simply wasn't there. The food was disappointing across the board. The shrimp were small and overcooked. The flounder neither looked nor tasted like flounder. The sides were equally unimpressive: frozen French fries, premixed coleslaw, packaged salad mix with bottled dressing, and hushpuppies that were overly sweet. It was hard to identify anything that seemed freshly prepared other than the seafood itself--and even that was poorly executed. We're from Texas, where even small, unassuming seafood restaurants know how to prepare fresh seafood well. This restaurant fell short in every category: service, food quality, and overall value. The sea shack had good food but we collectively felt like if your standing in line to place order, sitting outside on picnic tables and getting served in disposable plates, it doesn't warrant for such high prices for the food. That being said, the food itself was quite good and we had a good time here. Always great food and a fun experience. We got there at 4:45pm and were able to get indoor seating with the first batch of people. The service was straight to the point. If ever there was a not secret-secret in HH, this place is it. I am sure there are some who visit and do not know of the perfection and comfort that is the Sea Shack, but I am absolutely positive everyone local knows about it. This is where you get "everyday seafood." Not fancy scallops and lobster on a fine china and a blue crab reduction on something. No, this is where you get gator tail and catfish and crabcake all with hushpuppies, written a side on a dry erase board to view while you wait in line. Because you ARE going to wait in line. This place will take your order and serve it up quickly, but too many people know about it not to cause a wait. But again, you will need the time to decide your order (espically if it's your first time) as the platters, apps, and po boys all demand your attention. And then there's dessert! Pies and pudding galore. I just have to mentioned that sweet tea though. I took a gamble, and won. Like syrup on my lips. So much so that I bypassed standing in line again for dessert and just got a refill for the road. I love this place and you will too. Make at least one trip while in HH. We have been coming here for about 40 years now. Little has changed, although it has been painted on the interior and is much brighter now. The menu has not changed much in forty years. Still fresh seafood and prepared fried, grilled or blackened. The sides are still the same. The Sweet Potato Bread is almost like cake. Service is excellent and we were glad to be here during low season. On holidays and during high season I am sure there are still lines outside. We have waited in those lines many times, but with three little girls. Now they have children of their own. To be in business for that long the Sea Shack must be doing something right!
