I love this place! Review is accordingly as you should know what to expect from a roadside motel that's been kick in' since probably the 1950's. We absolutely loved it. The beds are only mildly comfy and the bathrooms are small and dated but everything is clean and they have have a mini fridge and microwave in every room. Our room came with an ashtray which I didn't even know was a thing anymore, but we lit a little candle from the handy dollar general just up yonder and all was well again Outside, there are picnic tables and grills, you can bring your own foodstuffs! I loved the pool most of all, really clean and spacious and they provide floating rafts and pool games and almost no one is even there. In the height of July, we were one of two families. I think I literally spent 2 days in the pool alone, I read 2 books cover to cover. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. As a bonus, Cape Fear Boil company is literally across the street so you can grab a huge boil pot and enjoy it out on the picnic tables. We are definitely coming here again! read more

We booked 2 rooms for 2 days. There was a very strong odor of dog urine in the office. The owner/ receptionist had 3 dogs running around in there. The rooms were reasonably clean. However there were used false eyelashes and a couple of press on nails left on top of the microwave. The first day went well. The second day we went to the pool. There was an electrical outlet on the wall that my daughter plugged her phone charger into. There were no signs stating not to use outlet. The owner/ receptionist came out and started screaming at my daughter for using it. My daughter repeatedly apologized but the woman continued screaming, cursing and verbally abusing my daughter in front of my grandchildren and other motel guests called her stupid, an idiot, a moron ect. Continued screaming as my daughter was walking away. The woman was wanting a fight and we would not argue with her. She was screaming "I'll have you kicked out of here" I gathered up my grandchildren and our belongings, went back to the room and started to pack up our stuff to leave. We were embarrassed and confused as to the owners behavior and no longer felt comfortable or safe staying there.While packing up I lifted the bed covers and discovered a bed bug ( took pictures)upon further inspection I found more , which would explain the bites on my legs when I woke up. We were there for my grandsons birthday. Needless to say the owners hysterical, unprofessional volatile meltdown put a damper on the celebration. We have been going there for 10 years and never experienced this type of behavior from the staff. This Retro Motel is a Blast of the Past in my book! I'm 58 yrs old and I have been going to this motel since I was 15 yrs old. My entire family, Parents, Siblings, Kids, Nieces & Nephews, Aunt & Uncles love this Motel and we consider it our second home. The pool has a dolphin fountain that the kids absolutely love! Such great memories playing water volleyball,playing in the pool, laying beside it to suntan!! The parking lot has lovely big Ole trees to give plenty of shade. There are picnic tables, grills, plenty of seating, and outdoor showers! It's a short walk down to the oceanfront for fun, sun and adventure. There is a small four car parking lot. Just remember to stay off the dunes because of Sea Turtles! Such a lovely place! read more

My daughter and I have been staying there for about 6+ years, at different times of the year. Always enjoyed our visits! This week we were there, and our room could not have been any better! They had redecorated. Gave it a fresh new look. Anything we asked, for they delivered. Staff was friendly. Pool was clean. From check-in to check-out, we were very pleased! Revised review to one star down from five. Previously I gave great review as it is family owned, clean, friendly staff, and near the beach. It is now day two of rain and no internet. I called the office and they even said" yeah, that part of the hotel does not get Internet." Well, um, if you knew don't you think you should fix? Even without rain it is what the family does at night. So, for me, I used computer to do work stuff. Only so much I can do...without internet. So, now entering the third day of cartoons. Our third, and final, year here. I don't think I'm the first to figure this out. In previous years the place was full in August. This year, far from full. We will leave early. I can't say enough good things about this little motel. The staff is very friendly. They allow dogs for a cheap pet fee which is a huge plus for me. They are also located a block away from a nice beach entrance so you can carry your stuff with you easily. The do have a pool that looks nice. I've never been swimming in it since the ocean is just a few feet away. The rooms are a little bit outdated but cozy. They all have a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a cot that you can use as a bed or couch. They obviously care about there guest. They even have doggie welcome baskets with toys and treats. They're about a block or 2 away from a food lion which is very convenient. The only downside is if you are staying on the first floor you can hear the guest above you easily. I usually just ask for a second floor room. A single room will run you about 80 a night. They also have apartment rooms with kitchens and such but I've never needed one. This place and its staff are amazing and ill continue to go back each year. read more

First of all, you have to realize that this isn't the Ritz. It's an inexpensive motel near the beach that is pet friendly. So yes, it's a bit dated...wood paneling on the walls, etc. But, if you're cool with that, the lady at the front desk was sweet and honest (she caught and admitted that she had over charged us). Everything else met the minimums and I dug that the windows were able to be opened. Plus, they were reasonable on their dog fee. We'll be back! read more

This was the worst scumhole we have ever had the displeasure of staying in. We would not have stayed past the first five minutes if we had another choice, but it was the beach and Memorial Day Weekend. Although illegal in NC, all the rooms were smoking rooms, as well as the common areas, even where they did laundry. Even the clothes we didn't wear, our suitcases, shoes and everything smelled like cigarettes when we got home. There was a small TV with a non-working remote. There were no hair dryers, no shampoo, and threadbare, dirty towels and bed linen. The "pool" was a joke and had cracked, pitted walking areas that were dangerous, especially being wet. The "shower" at the pool was a spigot with an indentation in the sidewalk to catch the water which overran into the parking lot. There were people smoking and drinking alcohol with children at the pool and in the "playground". The people at the check-in desk were smoking and blowing it in our faces. There was not enough parking so that when we came back from dinner we had to park next door in a filthy lot. There were people grilling with giant fires in the common areas that were also dangerous. Our Memorial Day weekend (and we're both veterans) was ruined because of this dump!!! read more

Tried to call and book a room for the weekend on the 17th. The woman that answered the phone on 9/7/16 at 4:50 pm was extremely rude. She hung up on us 3 times and told us she did not have time for us and to call someone else. After reading the reviews about bed bugs in the rooms and electrical tape holding the refrigerators together, we will surely look somewhere else. Way to represent Oak Island with your hospitable attitude in the hospitality industry. read more
