We had the house margarita on the rocks, which is one of the best I've ever had and the surf and turf burrito half red half green sauce is amazing and they put fries in it. It's Wednesday night not every crowded, so seating was great. The decor is nice, love the original 2 brick walls, hanging art is interesting. Service was great, our server gave us some drink recommendations. I ordered clam chowder, it was tasty but lukewarm. Our server replaced it with a much hotter version. It was served with a small packet of crackers, I personally think warm bread or a roll would have made this dish perfect. The atmosphere was very nice, the taco's were good however my second meal was not the best. I ordered the captains Boil. The shrimp were dry and over cooked. The flavors were good but overall I was not impressed l. I am willing to try something else next time. My husband had the fish and chips and the presentation was good. I would go back as the staff were very professional and friendly. Taco Tuesday was good, I ordered the shrimp, fish and chicken taco's. Another hidden gem in the I.E....we had the Captain's Boil, chicken and waffles and bottomless mimosas. This was the best boil or some places will call it fisherman's stew, just no fish. The broth was so delicious, I had to slow my eating down to really enjoy each bite. The place has a great ambiance, very detailed with all the decor and love the open patio side to downtown Upland. I am so glad that Captains Grill has opened up in downtown Upland! The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere is very cool looking on the inside as well as clean. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. To start off, I decided to try the coconut shrimp appetizer. It was very good and I loved the flavor of the sauce it comes with. I ordered the pineapple margarita as well. For my entree I ordered the taco trio with a baja fish taco, fried shrimp taco, and a surf and turf taco. They were absolutely amazing and delicious! I did not have a favorite because they were all so yummy. The fish and chips were very good as well. Lastly, we had to order the churros and they did not disappoint! You can order delivery from here if you want it super late and with half your order missing. We ordered 4 items, and they delivered 2. Just ridiculous. Any person with half a brain could've done a quick sanity check and seen that a bunch of stuff was missing before it was sent out. When we asked for a refund on the $20 chips&guac because they only sent the chips, they gave us a $2 refund because "the chips were sent." In what world is a giant thing of guac only costs $2, and plain chips are worth $18?? The food that we did get was overpriced and mediocre tasting. read more

Tonight, I finally tried Captains Grill in Downtown Upland. The service was very attentive and the ambiance was cool. Check out all the big pieces of art! But let's focus on what you're really here for... the food! I had an old fashioned made with Marker's Mark and when it was brought table-side, I was given the option of having it smoked. The owner apparently soaks wood chips in a peach liquid and the aroma that was produced was amazing. I was able to smell it throughout at least 3/4 of the beverage. A mascarpone cherry and orange rind were added to the muddled sugar and bitters which made the drink very traditional, apart from the smoke. 5/5 For an appetizer I had the octopus ceviche and aquachile. Both were incredible fresh, served very chilled and accompanied with tostadas. I really appreciated that the aquachile had additional pieces of sliced jalapeños available for use to make as hot as you liked; as opposed to blowing your taste buds away with a predetermined amount that you couldn't control already blended into the juice. Both were very appealing to the eye, and would make for great options to share. Aquachile 5/5. I thought the ceviche could have used more juice so 4/5. My main meal was two tacos with lime rice and beans. It also came with 3 different salsas to try! I had a surf and turf taco and a blacked cod fish taco. The cod fish taco was prepared perfectly with a heavy dryrub, and cream based sauce. Adding lime and/or salsas were not only unnecessary, but took away from the flavor profile of the taco. I give it a 4.5/5, only because the rub became a bit overpowering towards the end of the taco. As for the surf and turf (comprised of steak and shrimp), the steak was seasoned very simple ( especially when compared to the cod), and was dry, BUT the meat was very clean. The shrimp was seasoned well, but scarce compared to the amount of steak in the taco. I would have added more shrimp and chopped them up to incorporate more of the surf and turf theme. On it's own I give it a 3/5, but when I added lime and tried the offered salsa's it shot up to a 5/5!! Super delicious!! Adding the salsa verde to the rice made it a solid 4/5 and the beans were nice and creamy, 5/5. Overall, I'm excited to go back and try a few other options. We have been wanting to try this new spot for awhile and we were finally able to try it for dinner one night. The place looked very modern and fun. There is a nice bar area. We were warmly greeted and seated right away. Our waiter was very friendly and we ordered two Paloma's and they arrived in these very cute cantaritos that had like a lotteria picture. It was very cute! We ordered the Esquite and it was ok. We ordered the clam chowder bread bowl. The clam chowder was nice and creamy with lots of clams which is a plus. They also took out a lot of the bread so I had a lot of clam chowder that I got full from it. The only issue I had was that it was not hot enough. It felt like it was sitting there for a while. My husbands wet burrito was huge and filled with carne asada, rice and beans covered in red sauce . He. Liked it and liked that it was big enough to take home the other half and eat it later. We had a wonderful experience at Captains Grill. The service, food, ambiance and value were all great. The bartender, Anthony, went above and beyond to make me a delicious penicillin. It wasn't something on the menu but he was kind enough to look it up and make one for me and it was one of the best I've had in a long time. Mario, our server, was also fantastic. He was kind, attentive and made great recommendations. We ordered the coconut shrimp and elote for appetizers and they were both great. For dinner, my husband and I had the tacos. We ordered the blackened fish, surf and turf, and kracken and each one was better than the last. They each had a good portion of meat and the tortillas and salsa tasted homemade. Weekend Brunch with my girl was just perfect at Captains Grill! We loved the food & the mimosas were made perfectly. We heard about this restaurant so we checked it out. We were greeted by a friendly host who sat us down. Our server was welcoming and hospitable. The Oysters were fresh and we had Surf and Turf Burrito for main course. We enjoyed the delicious food and finished with Churros for dessert with 3 different dips: chocolate, caramel and tres leches. First time here, the food is delicious! Started with the shrimp ceviche as an appetizer, it was just right! Then I got the Branzino with cilantro rice which is so good and my husband got the Ribeye steak, everything so flavorful! Their aguas frescas, Jamaica and Horchata, are made fresh. Then dessert, the Deep fried ice cream and the Churros were so delightful and 2-4 people could share. I really wanted to like this place. Convenient to my house, and I love fish and chips. Went for lunch in. Monday after the lunch rush about 2pm. 1/2 the restaurant was seated, so easy to get a table. Service staff already in "after rush mode". Took awhile to have service begin, "has anyone helped you"....like it wasn't his station. Food was relatively quick, nice presentation, hot and fresh. Fries were crisp, and fish was a nice quantity. However, I like traditional tartar sauce, so didn't care for this offering. Also, even though the fish was cooked all the way through, the batter was not. I really hate that mealy, raw mushy breading around the fish...ate a little more than half, then stopped. Cole slaw had mostly red cabbage, seemed old, limp, like yesterday's. Service pretty non existent, think it may be the "way it is here". Drank all of my Diet Coke, glass completely empty waiting for server to return for a refill. Probably too busy completing after lunch rush side work....saw no additional tables seated after me, I know he wasn't "busy". At departure, isn't one of the host duties to thank guests? This host was also busy finishing his side duties....he picked up the walk off mat as I approached the door, walked outside, letting the door close in my face. He stood right in front of the glass door (I watched him since I couldn't get out), as he shook all the debris from the rug onto the sidewalk in front of the restaurant....as he finished, I pushed the door open and held it for him. Great food and great service! We found this place on yelp & decided to try it & were thrilled with how great the food was. I'm Hispanic & picky with seafood but this place exceeded our expectations! Our server Gianni was amazing & went beyond. We came with our twin babies who were a little fussy but he never seemed annoyed with us & was very patient with us allowing us to enjoy our dinner.
