My Nissan Juke had a lengthy list of problems immediately after I bought it as is from a crappy dealer. I couldn't pass emissions. The car was throwing multiple codes and it became a heck of a puzzle! Mark Jr. went above and beyond to help diagnose some of the issues with the car. Between repairing part of the exhaust, the mass airflow sensor, a custom hose, other sensors, and more, he, and others at the shop got to the bottom of the problems and got everything repaired. I also found out the car is a turbo (no one told me when I bought it and I didn't think to look for that) so they explained premium gas needs to go in the car only (which was on the gas door of course).. but they didn't charge an arm and a leg, they worked around my impossible schedule having to take the car home and bring it back multiple times, and they fixed the monster! I can't thank them enough because everything has been a struggle in my life and they helped me through when I had no one. Don't go anywhere else. Go to Mark Sr and Mark Jr and Car X in Portage, no matter what. Mark Sr. is a godsend and will go above and beyond for his customers. All I can say is this place has been a miracle for me. They do amazing work. They are honest. The staff are knowledgeable and dedicated. I would actually give them a negative one star. I took my Subaru in for a exhaust repair at my mechanics request. I knew what I needed done and was very nice and respectful when asking for service on my car. I was was treated like I was stupid and was told whoever was working on my car was taking advantage of me. They could not do what I ask but if I bring my car back tomorrow they would run a full diagnostic and let me know what "really" need to be done. Hey Car X Man your a Jerk! My mechanic treats me with respect and explained what needed to be done and why. Corporate should send a someone to check this place out! read more

This was by far the best service I've gotten on my car in the two years I've lived in NW Indiana. They twice took me under my car to show me the rusted out spots that were causing noise in my car. Then, when they gave me the estimate, there was a diagram at the top of the paper showing the exact parts that they could fix/replace and it looked JUST like what I'd seen under my car (a total thrill for someone as car naive as I am.) They had two estimates for me, one was the patch-the-problem estimate and the other was the estimate to do it right. I opted for the do-it-right option and before I left, the # had gone down $40 because the owners had found cheaper parts as he continued to call around. And then, they shuttled me to my house and picked me up again when the car was done. And THEN, a few days after everything was fixed, I got a thank you note from them in the mail. It was awesome. These guys are WAYYYY too over priced. they quoted me around $700 to change just the front rotors, brakes and calibers. I went out to a different shop, got front AND back replaced for under 500. Do your research before you stop here. other services may be reasonable, but this one was not. read more

So I'm not one to go on rants but I think other people need to be aware of where not to take your car to. Got an oil change at oil n go in Valparaiso. Been going there for years. I start having issues with my car take it in somewhere else lift the hood and find out there's no oil cap And oil has been pouring out everywhere. Get a callback from the owner and she says I wish I could look at the video but our video footage expires every three weeks and this just happened to be four weeks. Whatever. Have all new tires put on and a wheel alignment at NTB in Merrillville come to find out my drivers front tire the ball joints and arm is so warn out the tire is about falling off 4 days after I have the new tires put on. Do you think NTB told me NO did they charge me for an alignment YES. Thanks to car X in portage for helping me and finding the missing oil cap Inside my engine. Stopped in at 5pm to see if they would check my engine light. I travel for a living and was worried. Absolutely no caring from these guys. Very sharp nasty tone. Then when I agreed to pay and overprice amount to ease my mind they pretty much said to bad! To late tonight. 5pm. 1 car and 5 empty bays. Really crappy service. Went to Autozone and ask them to check it for me. Guess what ? Lose connection. Less than 2 minutes to fix and were happy to help. I have never been to autozone or carx. I took it to Portage Car-X and they did an excellent job at not only repairing my car as soon as possible but that I got a fair price for the engine that they needed to order. Blew a brake line and when I called for a quote, the guy I spoke to (Mark) was incredibly rude.

Went to this place when they first opened the other day and told him my rear brakes started to grind the other day. He took my tires down and said my calipers were locked up and destroyed my rotors...$675 dollars after only looking at it for 2 min...i told him to put my wheels back on and went down the street to another shop and they said my rotors and calipers were fine...when i went in the whole waiting room smelled of booze and the owner(who i delt with was very rude) was the biggest idiot you will ever meet....RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I needed brakes badly but it was 2 days from a long holiday weekend, so my regular mechanic and another shop I called were booked for the next 5 days. After reading some of these Yelp reviews, I wasn't sure how this shop would handle my call, but I figured I could deal with rudeness if necessary, and gave them a call. Mark, the shop owner, answered and was completely, amazingly courteous and helpful, even telling me alternate times I could come in, what time I would need to bring it in by on a weekday or Saturday, if I couldn't make it that same day, without me even asking. He was super helpful and brake pads were half off... plus I was able to bring my car in immediately! At the shop, Mark and his son assisted me and were both friendly, helpful, and explained everything about my brakes, car, etc., answering all of my hundreds of questions patiently and without ever talking down to me. I was out of there with new brake pads and rotors in about an hour! Price was a tiny bit higher than my local guy (I am from LaPorte county) but not crazy high. Feb.2,2014 Went to get my wife's oil change in her car.Been going to Portage car-x the past 3 yrs,have always found them to be polite and concern with any problems that i'm telling them about my car.Had a problem the other day printing a coupon and Mark honor it for me.Also Brad his asst. Took my car there to get the front brakes fixed. The manager (I think) offered to come pick my car up from my job since it was a weekend and I was working. I work two mins from there. He told me he would have to do a "full brake inspection" because I probably needed more than I thought.. I told him only my front brakes were bad. He called about 2 hours later and told me that my back brakes were so bad that they weren't even working.. And my front brakes, rotors, and calipers were bad and that some pin in one of my calipers was broken. He quoted me over $800 to fix it all. I told him that I couldn't have the money to pay for it and he began to get agitated.. He then told me he would see what he could do an call me back.. After about ten minutes he called me back and told me that he could just do the front brakes, rotors and calipers but it was still going to be $400 but there was a brakes sale so it would drop it to $350 but he would also be using some of my old parts. And even after that I would have to sign papers saying that my car was unsafe to drive because of my back brakes not working. I told him again that I couldn't afford even that and that I didn't realize it would be that much.. He then began to get angry and yell at me throwing it in my face that he was nice enough to come pick up my car. Which I was extremely appreciative of him doing. He tried forcing me to spend money by saying hat he "had to do something with it because it was unsafe" he then tried to sell me tires... After I told him the last time that I wouldn't be able to afford it and I would have to come get it he said " fine what time are you picking it up" I told him I got off at noon and he just hung up on me. When I picked up my car his attitude wasn't much better... After all this I took my car to another shop and was told that my back brakes were in great condition and all I needed was front brakes and rotors. It was only $200. I wouldn't recommend any one going to this place. They are scam artists and get very upset when you don't let them fix your car.. After all this I even had to pay them $30 to try and scam me. The CarX in Portage is an absolute rip off!!! I had a Grand Prix and every year (for the last three years) I was getting brake work done. I had lifetime pads but when I complained that I needed pads they would say they were fine. It was not until I needed rotors would they say we'll fix it. Of course it would cost me over 900 dollars. Well I got rid of my Grand Prix and bought a town and country. I was having an issue with my town and country so I took it to three other shops however the other shops said they could not get to it until Monday (I bought it in on a Saturday)so as a last resort I took it to CarX in portage because they said they could have it fixed that day. I told them what the previous mechanics told me but the man I spoke with initially was insistent it was the battery so I purchased a new battery. I went shopping at Walmart afterward and when I started my car I had the same problem. I drove back to CarX and when I told them I wanted a refund I was told I would have to pay for the labor (for putting the new battery in AND putting the old battery back in). The staff appears to have an interest in their customers but they are in the business to make money. I have a masters degree plus doctoral work and I believe it is so sad that I have watched people being talked into work on their car that is not necessary. The ONLY reason I bought it in was because they said my vehicle could be fixed that day. Before I left one mechanic apologized and said that the one that insisted it was a battery should have listened to what I was saying about the vehicle. read more
