Our first experience with Salvadoran food, and we loved it! We arrived in Huntsville State Park after a long drive and a struggle to put up the tent. Grateful that they were open on a national holiday AND on a Monday. Carbonero does a brisk takeout business as well. Recommended for the friendly employees and a distinctive menu. Had a horrible experience at Carbonero a few days ago. I was sitting in the bar area, and my server, whose name on the receipt was Lexie, was vaping multiple times while working and even appeared to be smoking a weed cart. The smell completely ruined the atmosphere that I was first enjoying and it made the place smell awful. On top of that, she took forever to bring the food out the overall service was extremely unprofessional. Why 4 stars? Because that's where it comes out on the curve. --- --- --- I graduated 17 years ago from Sam Houston and have very fond memories of Huntsville. But I also had the eating habits of a typical college student. My monthly budget for food was about $12, so I didn't have many go-to restaurants. And when I come back to visit as a 38 year old with a big boy salary, it's pretty obvious that I'm not going to find the city to be a foodie paradise. Everything is operated by college kids. When I was in college, I was not exactly hyper concerned on delivering 5-star experiences for the customers of the business paying me minimum wage. It's a tough life for these small biz owners. So ultimately, I would rate Carbonero an overall 4, but a Huntsville 5. The tie breaker for me is that the final bill did not exactly represent Huntsville prices. But I thought it was a really solid experience overall. Chips and queso = 3 stars. My friend requested we get this and it didn't leave the greatest first impression. It was just okay at best. Combo Platter #2 = 4 stars. Steak, chicken, mashed potato pancake and the chaufa rice. Everything was solid. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular. The potato concoction was unique and delicious. I've never seen it on a menu before, but I'm not sure why because it's a great idea. Tres Leches = 4 stars. I finished with this and had mixed thoughts. It was really enjoyable, but it was served super cold and almost seemed like it had been sitting in a fridge for a while. But the taste could not be denied. It was very rich and heavy, so I'd recommend sharing. I get why this is pretty much the best restaurant in Huntsville according to Yelp and I'm glad I was able to finally experience it. read more

Visiting from out of town as an event team and decided to try something local. Steak was marinated nicely and flavorful. Cooked to perfection. Chicken was great as well. Tasted as it should and had a nice smoke flavor. Shrimp pasta had a great seasoning and plentiful serving sizes. Service was impeccable. Server was attentive and even brought napkins without asking when he saw us use the first set of napkins. Looking forward to coming back again one day! Ambiance was ok. A really great restaurant! In a sea of mediocre Mexican food restaurants all within 15 minutes of this place, this place is a much needed restaurant in Huntsville to give people something other than fast food or over greased Mexican food. This is Salvadoran food so if you've never had it, you'll find similar dishes to Mexican places around here but also a lot of unique food that you won't see at any restaurants nearby. I highly recommend the chaufa rice but the menu has a lot of other really delicious options to pick from too. Sometimes when a place has too many options, they're not all executed very well but I wouldn't say that about here. I try to get something new each time I come and have yet to be disappointed. The staff that works here is all really friendly and helpful, the inside has a very nice atmosphere, and it's an all around good experience. read more

Husband and I stopped here for lunch after a yelp search on our way from DFW to Galveston. Don't let the strip mall location or older interior fool you, this place has some good food. We shared a combo plate that had a steak, shrimp, pupusas, etc. The steak was delicious as were the shrimp. We also had guacamole and chips, the guacamole was so good and fresh and seasoned with lime. Since we shared a plate we each got a dessert, tres leches and flan. Both good, not great. The cake was a bit dry for me, I like a more wet tres leches. The flan was the better of the two imo. Service was good, very sweet ladies with good suggestions about the menu. We had been wanting to try this place out and finally made it up to Huntsville so gave it a shot. First off, the salsa was really good. I got the smothered chicken and garlic shrimp combo which was very flavorful and juicy, but slightly on the salty side for me. My wife had the same thing and also enjoyed her meal. Carbonero doesn't look like much from the outside of this nondescript shopping center. But, it looks better inside! And I was excited to try Salvadorian food for the first time. They're known for their rotisserie chicken so I went with the quarter chicken and chaufa rice which also comes with a house salad and a green dipping sauce for your chicken (it has a kick!). For $8 and some change, this was a great meal! The chicken could have been a little juicier but it was seasoned well. And chaufa rice, El Salvador's version of fried rice, was delicious. We used to LOVE this place. I got the equivalent of their sampler platter. The pupusa was nasty, soggy, and undercooked. The other meat was cooked far too long, making it dry and tough. My wife's pupusa platter looked as if they had poured vegetable oil on the food before serving, REALLY, it did. The guacamole was at least a day old, slimy, we sent it back. I recommend you avoid the free "yelp check in" quest and guacamole sampler. The cheese is out of a can and the guacamole was watery and starting to brown. The chips were nearly stale, but that might be because we came in about 45 before closing. Never got a refill on chips, but that was ok. You're better of eating the chips with their tasty cream and green sauce. Order the big 32oz Regia Salvadoran beer, but the waiter forgot it. Maybe next time... Have always liked this food because I am Salvadoran, but to wait over an hour for food that I know doesn't take over an hour was not great. My mom waited for a refill for over 30 min and did not get one until we asked for one. When we asked management about the food, we were told it was coming out and to have patience is insane. It was not busy enough for it to take long! Was an entire disappointment unfortunately! Hope they can get this fixed. read more

My favorite new restaurant to go to!!!!!! I'm simply blown away by this food. I've never had Papusas or any type of Salvadoran food, but let me tell you this place will change your mind. From food to service this small town place offers a the full package. For starters I recommend getting their queso. It isn't like most places where you taste nothing but velveeta cheese. Their salsa comes out hot (as in cooked) and it taste great. I ordered the chaufa rice and the Carbonero enchiladas. Both great meals that will satisfy the more hungry customer. Ask for the white and green sauce, you won't be disappointed. The white sauce is a house made sauce that you can put on just about anything and it'll taste amazing. The green sauce is for the spicy lovers that just want an extra kick on this taco or chips. Both sauces are worth trying! Another thing that strikes me is the customer service the waiters/waitresses have. Even though it can be slow at times, they really do want you to enjoy every second of your experience here. If you don't enjoy your plate they are willing to substitute anything no questions asked. I have been here twice. I do not recall my first visit but I normally recall distaste so I assume it was good. Regardless, I always like Latin American. This is Salvadoran. This time I ordered the Chicken Chipotle salad and it was excellent. Everything was pleasing, the help polite and efficient, the decor and ambience were pleasant, the menu varied and tempting. I can't wait to go back. The only reason I didn't give them a five stars is because I have only been there twice in 3 years. Still, I pretty sure their quality is consistent. Stopped by Huntsville and found this latin gem. Purchased a whole chicken meal. Plenty of food for 4-5 people. We ordered the pork pupusas, fried yucca and the borracho beans.
