I had to rent the…read morecar for two weeks because my car was not in working order, and I was able to reserve a car the same day (in fact, just an hour or two before going to pick it up) and it was fairly quick when I got there to pick it up. They have a sales arm maybe? I'm not sure; there are two driveways for Hertz. I was coming from the south along Mannheim so I pulled into the one that I saw, since there was big Hertz signage and whatnot there. But when I went in the guy told me to go to the next driveway, as that was the car rental section. (To be clear, this first stop was also part of Hertz, just not where one goes to pick up a rental.) Anyway, this whole thing was not very clear at all (especially since, at the first place I stopped, there was a big sign that said car rental right outside the door). I had to return it a day early and there was no discount. Possibly because I had rented it as a week-long rental and extended it for the same period. Would be nice if they'd given me something back but oh well. They charge something like $15 per day if you get their toll road coverage, so either make sure you avoid toll roads or sign up for the Pay by Plate option using the Illinois Tollway app.

If you want to rent a Tesla from Hertz now after a flight, you have to find your own way 15 minutes (aka take an Uber [blk] as there is no shuttle, and go through the process in person. When it was at O'Hare it was so nice...Find your name on the screen, get in your car and go if you prepay---as I always do. Welps, when I went to retrieve my prepaid reservation, they asked for the card I used to make the reservation. I left most cards back in LA so didn't have it on me and they refused to help me further. It was bizzare on a prepaid reservation. I asked if they could just cancel it then and rebook as I can pay with some card I have on me instead. Nope. And it was weird because the guy working gave zero solutions. So...I sat on the chair in front of him and called Hertz support. They changed the credit card on the reservation to one I had with me in my possession so...I was then able to get my car. The initial guy working just looked at me blankly most of the time and was so out of it. Thankfully a second person came and was able to assist me after I hung up with Hertz support. Very strange process. Everything with my rental was fine. The car needed some serious repairs --- I've never been in a squeeky Tesla before! But it ran great for my few weeks so it got the job done. I don't know what a good rental price is but I was fine with the price I paid. I think I had the car 16 days and paid just under $500 so seemed fine to me. When I returned the car, same blank stare guy was working. He blankly stared at me as I walked in. He's terrible. Again, thankfully, another person was working and was so fast, friendly and helpful. So...Hertz has good deals but the Tesla situation makes no sense for travellers. I won't be renting from Hertz again if Teslas aren't at O'Hare. This Hertz location is really bad because of the bad support, a differentiating factor from other locations in the worst way possible.

However, when I last rented a car, the company (not Enterprise) called a couple days before my rental period to tell me they wouldn't have the minivan I had reserved. Since the car type was non-negotiable due to the number of folks who'd be in the car, I have been wary to use that other agency since. When I called Enterprise and asked if my car type would be guaranteed, they said it would be no problem and they kept their word. The car was in good condition, clean, and comfortable to drive and ride in. Pickup was easy and fast as well. As of June 2026, they put a deposit of $300 on your card for the rental. This location does the "enterprise picks you up" thing, and that is good within a two mile radius. I'll need to keep that in mind for next time.

Be careful of this location, they also do not check the cars before they rent them out. I found an open beer bottle in the back seat of my rental upon picking up the car. Since the Alamo counter was closed, we were redirected to the National counter where the staff was incredibly friendly. We were even given an additional discount as the rates were much better for the July 4th weekend, and we had booked our trip 1 or 2 months ago when the rates were high. That was a great way to start a trip. Overall the vehicle was great and fun to drive especially being new it had the assisted driving (ADAS) which made the long drive relaxing. There was a small windshield crack (under an quarter of an inch barely visible), and while their policy only requires reporting damage over two inches from prior experiences, I made them note it on the record before I took the vehicle from the lot just to be on the safe side. Returning the car was a breeze, just drove straight in, unloaded our bags and off to catch a plane

Needed a car to rent for twelve days for my wife and me during our 10 day upper Midwest road trip…read more Decided to spurge a bit to get a nicer car, and surprisingly found the Hertz at O'Hare to have the best price for an airport rental of a luxury mid-size SUV (Volvo XC60 or comparable) at $572.32. I booked directly with them and there was no mention of additional charges collected at time of rental, just that it had to be prepaid and was non-refundable. We had the last Delta flight from LAX to ORD so my wife, her mom, and I got into Chicago around midnight. The Airport Transit System (train) will take you to all the terminals and multi-modal facility where all the rental car agencies are. Terminal 5 is the last stop before it, and the train cars were pretty full by the time it came to us, even this late. We had to abandon our luggage cart, and hand-wheel our luggage, finding space. I've been a member of the Hertz Gold program for a while, back to my corporate days, and knew to skip the rental counter and go directly to the garage to see my name in lights. It didn't matter since, the main rental counters were all closed this late at night, so everyone had to go to the garage. Sure enough, my name was listed, but instead of showing where I could pick up my car, it said to see the counter attendant. There was only one person there, and there was a line. Once it was my turn, it turned out the car wasn't ready for us. I think they don't want to have the XC60 for others to choose, so they had to get it 'from the back'. It didn't take very long to do that, and everyone was perfectly civil about it. However, they hadn't checked me out, so when we got to the gate to leave, we had to do the checkout process with the attendant (she was not happy since someone before hadn't their job). We went through a car scanner which recorded the outside condition of the car. As for the trip, I was really happy with the car. It had some of the most comfortable car seats I've ever used (fully adjustable for both upfront seats, with lumbar support) and the back seats were heated. The power moon roof was so large, though we couldn't use it much open since it was hot and sunny during our trip. It also surprisingly didn't have wireless Apple Play, so had to find a USB-C cable, and then it worked fine with Navigation and Spotify. It was a really good trip, and the SUV had a lot to do with that. Bringing the car back, once you got close to O'Hare, it was important to follow the signs for rental car return, vs following the directions on Google Maps. We passed through a similar car scanner when we entered the lot. We didn't have to wait for anyone to check us out, just leaving the keys on the dash. For once, we didn't forget anything in the car. We got an itemized bill by email in a couple of hours. We took the train back to Terminal 5. A couple of days later, we got another email saying that the car had been returned with no damage. However, they also charged the additional money as well, so I opened up an incident to explain the charge. We'll see where that goes. Stats: 10 states visited (IL, WI, IA, MO, KY, TN, AR, MS, OH, IN), missing two of the Mississippi River States (MN, LA). 7 gas stations visited on trip, $294.20 spent, 72 gallons used, 2,133 miles driven.

The rude dude clearly didn't want to be there, and wasn't willing to listen to anything the customers had to say/ask. It's sad to know that people from outside of Chicago arrives at O'Hare and this guy is one of the first people that they have interact with, because these people will think "wow, Chicagoans suck!"
