I bought cute talavera mugs here as gifts. The bolillos are the best here. We use them to make sandwiches or toast them on the griddle and eat it warm with butter. Tastes good to dip in coffee. Went in last night as I needed homemade corn tortillas and this place was the only open that actually made their own. It was busy as I guess everyone was picking up their traditional Rosca de Reyes (King's Wreath) you know the one that hides the baby Jesus in it... whomever cuts the slice that has the baby in it must hold a party for the neighborhood - Día de la Candelaria, or Candlemas, on February 2. I would advise you not to purchase your groceries!!!! here they have no hygiene standards here I was there today and I not only saw them using squeegee that are used on the floors being used on the table tops!!!!!! that's disgusting and unsanitary there was about 5 people in the department and only had one lady dispaching when the older man came to dispatch he never washed or put on clean gloves I left. I was there for the Labor Day weekend specials on sunday morning the male worker from the meat department was super dirty his arms were filthy and when my wife asked him to change his gloves he was visibly upset and was kinda rude we asked for his name but he just murmured it so we just let it go we left the fresh cheese and ham we ordered and went for the pre packed deli meat. I tried this market for the first time. Its a small market compared to others such as VONS or ALBERTSONS. It may be because they have a section for freshly made food and a seating area. I felt the items available were a bit limited. However the prices on vegetables were good. I would probably come here for the produce. The cashier was nice. Went to have breakfast this morning at their Cocina....very disappointed in the lack of flavors.. had the menudo but was told they don't offer oregano for it. The menudo had no flavor just tasted like water. I will never go back to this place, this has to be the most poorly managed store, they only had two people working the meat counter and about 15 customers, one girl you can tell was not used to working the meat counter because someone would ask her if it was "pork"? She had to go get someone in the back to answer....took us about 15-20 minutes to get our order! Had I not had a cart full of groceries I would have left....fast forward to checking out....wow! And then the checkout cashier Mayra, charged me twice for 2 small jalapeño peppers AND THEN over charged me 2 dollars additional for the 2 small jalapeño peppers!!!! At .88 cents a pound, and they act like they don't speak English.. The business needs to be reported to the county and State board of consumer affairs for over charging and mislabeling their products. I haven't been to Cardenas in years! I went today to give it another chance. Now I remember why I had t been back. They must try to hire the rudest cashiers possible. No greeting, no eye contact, no smile, nothing. Then rang everything up and just stood there, didn't tell me my total. I didn't bring my glasses so I had trouble trying to see the total. She clearly saw me struggling to see the total. Still stood there. I won't be back and make sure I can let as many people know as possible not to go to the Ontario location.
