What happens to me way too often is I'll be at a coffee shop in line, then next in line, and the jaded worker completely unaware of subconscious bias well say with great pleonasm "I'll help who's next in line please," and some White person will step in front of me and place an order. If I am feeling uppity I may say something in protest to which I invariably get "I didn't see you." This obviously confirms the unexamined bias. Anyway, here we were at a sociology conference and my White friend butted in front of an Asian man who had been patiently waiting his turn and the barista said, "Sorry, he's next." And took his order. And the barista was a young, white woman. So for this and their totally awesome Italian expresso machine, this place ranks 5 BIG stars from me. read more

My only complaint is that they are on the second floor of a mall, and there is no free parking, you have to pay for street parking. Therefore, it is not the most convenient. Large up front counter displaying the many pastry options with no line on a Wednesday morning. Opted to get the half-dozen ($15) box to go. I love a lot of donut places and I'm fine with a plain old grocery store donut but these donuts are something else. I appreciate the fact that they have rotating specials and make an effort to create unique flavors and types of donuts other places don't have. Can't list the specials off the top of my head but the ones I have tried were scrumptious. My all-time fav from Cardigan is the French Crueller but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Their cake donut for example is dense but rich in flavor and very sweet. We tried an egg nog one as well which I didn't think would be very good but we gobbled it down like it was nothing ! So tasty. Cardigan Donuts is a Minneapolis born donut and coffee shop on the skyway level of the City Center Mall. Owners Jeff Bull and Justin Bedford opened the shop in May of 2017. Located in the Minnesota Central Business District they designed a welcoming environment that was supposed to be the antithesis of the office cubicle. The motto of the shop is "Comfort, Warmth, Welcome." In addition to be surrounded by office towers, it is surrounded by hotels. The City Center Mall that it is in is attached to a Marriott and Embassy Suites by means of skybridges. I stayed in the later for a week. Throughout my travels on the skyway level of City Center, I'd pass the donut display in the window. That display is the liveliest thing in a mall that seems to have its best days behind it (hopefully the situation changes). It was a recommendation from our server at The Local Pub that convinced my brother and I would to it on the last day of the vacation. When we visited it was sparsely busy. That meant zero issue finding a table. I ordered a blueberry cake donut and 12 ounce cup of coffee. Their coffee is Blackeye Roasting Company Donut blend coffee. The donut and coffee came out to $4.50. The donut was good and the coffee was decent. I am not knocking the coffee but my preference favors Starbucks. And Starbuck's just happens to be downstairs. In Las Vegas, I have combined Starbucks with nearby donut shops. With that said, if I lived in Minneapolis or was on vacation and I happened to be in City Center with an urging for a donut, I would combine Starbucks with a Cardigan donut or two. read more

So some context - in Southern California, I used to wait HOURS drive through line at midnight for blueberry donuts served in a pizza box (for my fellow SoCal folks, M&M donuts). I thought those were good, but Cardigan's are EVEN. BETTER. So I was pleasantly surprised. I also ordered the blueberry-filled donut and it was also really tasty. Super soft fresh exterior with NON-artificial tasting blueberry filling. JUST OK: Old fashioned - I'm a bit biased because I feel like Blue Star out of PDX is the gold standard for old fashioned donuts. What I didn't love about Cardigan's was that it was SUPER sweet. There was also a Carrot Cake old fashioned, which sounded like an amazing flavor but I was told it was sweetER. So, I skipped it. French Cruller was good but Zingerman's here in A2 is a smidge better and I can have them on the daily. I also enjoyed the Apple Fritter but it was a bit too sweet for me again. Unfortunately the mall still looks pretty shut down, so I was happy to see that cardigan was up & running - and busy. The space is very cute, lots of wood and all of the donuts are nicely displayed. I'm super indecisive, so I looked at everything a million times before choosing, but the woman working was very sweet and patient. She gave me her recommendations. I ended up deciding on the old fashioned (her favorite), the churro donut with a spicy chocolate dipping sauce (immediately reminded of churros con chocolate in Spain, yum!) and an apple fritter. The old fashioned was delicious - light, lemony. One of the better ones I've had, and this is my favorite donut. The churro one was so fun! Light, fluffy, cinnamon sugar that went well with the slightly sweet, slightly bitter, slightly spicy chocolate sauce. Definitely a donut I'd never had before and I was impressed. The bourbon glaze on the Apple fritter was unique and so so good! I just wish it'd had a few more Apple pieces. Next time I'll have to grab some coffee as well. Picked up a dozen and a half pre-ordered donuts on a Tuesday morning. Of course I walked in after two people who were picking out a dozen donuts each. It was the first time I ever went here and thankfully the person who answered helped me get from the street inside and upstairs. I don't think I would have found it otherwise. We got a huge selection which was awesome! I really liked the banana creme pie one and the French cruller. Their plain glazed was also very good. This shop is so cute, such a neat retro 50s vibe. In the afternoons, they sell their remaining donuts for 50% off, which I sadly missed both days we were in town. My husband and I stopped in one weekend morning around 10 or so, and the selection was already pretty slim, I have a feeling this is a popular spot. I ordered a cream filled bavarian and a cup of coffee. It may just be the kind of donut I got, but it wasn't as sweet and flavorful as I would have expected. The chocolate frosting was delightful though, nice and dark and chocolatey. The donut and bavarian cream filling were just slightly bland for my tastes. My husband had a glazed raised donut, and thought it was good, if not that different from any other shops. To some extent a donut is a donut is a donut, I suppose. I am on a mission to try all the donut shops in the Twin Cities. My mom was in town so I figured it was the perfect opportunity to try some new donuts. First off this place is not that easy to find if you have never been here before. It is on the second floor of a mall and I was looking for it's own store front. Once we finally found the place, I was welcomed by a lot of donut options in a modern donut shop. It was about 2pm on a Friday afternoon and there were still a lot of options. I have heard amazing things about the French crueller here so of course we ordered one and then we got one of the specials, which was a pumpkin donut. The French crueller was good and so was the pumpkin. However, nothing was exceptional here. The pumpkin donut was more like a donut with some pumpkin spice in it. I expected way more pumpkin flavors and the icing was too sweet. The crueller was too dry for my liking. Honestly, I have had some pretty amazing donuts at other donut shops in the Twin Cities so I am not sure if I would go out of my way to come here. read more

I cannot believe I haven't written a review for Cardigan Donuts yet! I think I just love Cardigan so much that it feels like I was born eating (and five-starring) them. Especially through this pandemic, I've appreciated their curbside delivery, and even friends from the coast have ordered me surprise donut delivery. Pickup and takeout is available too. You know a donut place is the real deal when they excel at the classics and don't need to add a bunch of flashy toppings or frills. Their plain old fashioned is my favorite ever. It's soft and dense on the inside, a little crispy on the outside, and greek yogurt gives it a little tang. Their cruller is just as they describe it: "Light and airy, yet rich and buttery." Their raised bar is also the best I've ever had anywhere, with the perfect yeasty dough and there's something about the icing that elevates it. It tastes more like a buttercream than a heavy icing. Their rotating specials are of course amazing too. From seasonal blueberry cake donuts and jalapeno-corn-bacon ones... all incredible. I love just love Cardigan so stinkin' much, you guys. read more

It was in my top three EVER and I've has a lot crispy outside, soft gooey inside and generous, flavorful glaze! 9.7/10 - could be a tinnnnnny but crispier on the outside but that's just me being a princess . Also tried the specialty banana bread toffee crunch. The toffee bar was to die for and the donut was solid. I didn't get much of a banana bread flavor but it was good. Their business seems based more on hype (they know how to play the marketing game) than an actual good product. I purchased 6 doughnuts, trying for a variety. The chocolate icing they use does not have much chocolate flavor. The underlying flavor of their batter - be it for cake doughnuts, raised doughnuts, or fritters, is pretty lacking, and the texture isn't great either. Some just had an off flavor - maybe it was time to change the oil they're fried in. Their doughnuts LOOK ok, but that's not what I value most in a doughnut. And they're pretty expensive per doughnut. Their location is also not convenient. Unless you need to be in the area for something else, you're going to spend a lot for parking and have a trek to get to this business. They are better than supermarket doughnuts usually are, but those would only get a 1 star. read more

Hooray for curbside delivery during this quarantine time! The staff were friendly and eager to take orders when I called in. They were patient when I asked questions about the flavor options and fillings for today's donuts. I was able to put my order in and let them know my ETA all very smoothly. Overall, love it! Location: it's located in City Center on the skyway level, right next to the escalators to get to the elevators. Very convenient location and easy to access. I got the Chocolate Sundae bowl after looking over my options for like 5 minutes LOL. There were so many good options. My bowl has espresso granola with white and milk chocolate chips, fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, a little whipped cream, and a donut hole!! You can pick the base to be Greek yogurt or oatmeal, but I opted for the yogurt. It was all topped off with a chocolate drizzle. It's unbelievable, and I am already halfway through this bowl while typing this review lol. Staff: the staff is all really nice!! I'm so sorry but no pics were taken of the yummy Cardigan donut!! How about it was so good, before I knew it, it had been completely consumed! I was gifted an old fashioned donut, that was perfectly glazed, flavorful and cake-y and was a lovely accompaniment to my Seattle's Best Coffee. My friend made an early trek to the Mall to pick up a dozen of donuts. Those of us who are considered special delighted in her generosity. Matter of fact one may have squealed a slight bit!
