This was my first stop for my late Caribbean lunch. This place has some great offerings and the staff is super friendly. (I heard that they were rude to some, but not me.) I had to wait a while as folks were definitely there getting their food and seem to know what was best at this place. I couldn't make up my mind (I really wanted curried oxtails and they were completely out!) so I opted for the curried goat. This dish was good although it did not have much curry flavor. I loved the look of the Pernil. It looked very homemade as did many of their other dishes. I also ordered the ceviche and the avocado salad. This is where the food went down sadly, I have had many, many ceviches, Cuban, Ecuadorian, Salvadorian, and Peruvian, to name a few. This one had zero flavors and just seemed like boiled shellfish with very little seasonings. The avocado salad was disastrous. It had no flavor at all and like the ceviche lacked salt! The avocado salad (which is my specialty at home) was watery and had no garlic. If it did, none could be found with my palate. I was very disappointed, to say the least, with these two dishes. The restaurant was set up like many Spanish cafeteria-style restaurants. Their menu board appeared old. Not a bad thing. Obviously, they know what sells and what folks want. Would I come back? Maybe to try their oxtails which seem to be a hit as well as some of their Pernil. Then maybe they can earn another star. But for now, baby please taste your food before you serve it. To start off this is place is a small hole in the wall, that's how you know it's gonna be gas. I got empanadas and chicken and rice, and wow guys it was unbelievable. My coworkers and I were looking for a spot to eat near a client of ours. We are adventurous with our eats! We wanted to check out this spot that seemed pretty good to some locals. I have had pretty good Dominican food in the past and Caribeno is up there. It's a good lunch spot with a decent amount of options and if you were in the mood for it I would go and check it out. It isn't anything jaw dropping that I would drive a distance to have anytime soon but will definitely be an option whenever I'm in the area. Don't come here and expect fine dining, but if you are craving some home cooked, spanish comfort food, this is the place to be. Rice and pigeon peas, rotisserie-style chicken, pernil, plantains, avocado salad, pica de gallo with shrimp... that was our casual, quick dinner. The chicken and pernil were both tender, moist and full of flavor. Avocado salad was fresh, pica de gallo had the right amount of citrus, and plantains were perfectly soft and sweet. If I were to nitpick on anything then it would be the rice. It needed a touch more seasoning and was a bit dry from sitting out uncovered. My husband and I order the mangu con tres golpes 20 minutes before we get there in the morning when we feel like having it. It is very filling. The only downside is no Washington Heights style cafe con leche :(...... Stuff on the menu should be ordered with time. If you are starving get what is on the warmers. Dominican! Happy days- there is a new Dominican restaurant recently opened right next to the place I take my shirts for cleaning... talk about convenient for lunch! Located in a small storefront, they have all you favorites: mofongo's, rice & beans, oxtails and so on - some things were a little new to me so I look forward to learning by eating! The ladies working there are all pleasant and you get a good sized plate for lunch - you will not be hungry when done here. The food is all tasty and even looks awesome in the display - everything is hot and fresh. Prices are reasonable. Definitely a new favorite spot! Yo bro how you gon forget the cheese. The mangu was watery/liquidy but not the tasty liquidy/watery like with butter. It was liquidy/watery with water taste. Needed butter and salt salami and egg was ok. Also got 2 lbs of pernil. It was ok but too greasy. Don't come in here looking for tacos or burritos. This is Dominican food and great stuff. The special order stuff like mofongo, either the pork or shrimp is excellent. The roasted fresh ham or pernil is excellent. Dominicans have a drink called Morir soñando. It's s a popular beverage of the Dominican Republic which has made its way to other Caribbean and Latin American countries, usually made of orange juice, milk, cane sugar, and chopped ice. It is not alcoholic and perfect for a hot day. The shrimp ceviche is on the money. You may have a little problem communicating with some of the staff there but some of them speak English. This is just a testimony to the authenticity of the food there. They also make great empanadas which they called pastelitos. You should try the potato balls with chopped meat in it which is called Papa rellena. Just keep the money just isn't diet food but it's well worth the extra calories if you want to treat yourself. You can take out the food or eat in there. Me I like to eat in there because I like the environment. It's very authentic and ethnic. They also have chimichurri which is a Dominican hamburger very wet and very good. The price is fair and the staff although shy are polite. read more

My family sometimes picks up food from here when they don't feel like driving far, but I never personally been there besides last week. I bought a plate with rice red beans and chicken. I am not lying when I tell you I woke up at 4 AM the next day and could not stop throwing up and later on at 7 pm I went to the hospital because It got so bad. They gave me an iv and pills but I've never been so sick in my life. And don't think it's because I can't handle that type of food, I am hispanic and I have a pretty strong stomach. Not bad, just not great. I really wanted to love this place because of the reviews and pictures, everything seemed so delicious! When I got here this evening 30-45 minutes before close, the staff were already packing up and cleaning the place. They had the basics available; Rice, beans, stews, and meats, but not everything I was so excited about like fried plantains and avocado salad! I really wanted some sort of salad with my plate that consisted of a ton of rice & beans, and a generous amount of meat, but the counter lady wasn't able to fulfil my request because they were closing (at 9). However, she was nice and not aggravated or moody. I got horchata to drink but I deeply regret that... it wasn't good at all as I've had elsewhere. Perhaps old? The other food itself were good but not exciting! I mean I get that it was the end of day, but the rice was a little dry and hard, the beans helped, and the meat was nice and tender but I grew tired of eating it. I really wish I had some greens and fried plantains, that would've made me a happy customer. But again, this cafeteria style Dominican restaurant is pretty decent and cheap for what you get. It's a typical NYC style latino hole in the wall with Amazing tasting food ! Fresh tender and sooo flavorful pernil, with arroz con gandules and then some extra frijoles on top, wow so delicious. Hate to be a glutton but I also tried the pollo guisado and a Puerto Rican pastel, both were flavored excellent. To be clear this is not some over priced, super gentrified trendy location, it is a small modest place with two sit down tables and is more of a take out place, BUT to be clear, the food is 100% authentic and delicious, I will definitely be back and it's super close to LIE and Ronkonkoma station. read more

Not only do they make great food, but if you call ahead, they will make a great Dominican breakfast..., this is one of the best in the area! The rice and beans were good, but having pasteles any time you want is great..the pork butt and oxtail are tasty and really make you miss home..The steaks are also a great item to enjoy. It's cafeteria style, with a lady that starts you at the rice and veggies, and works you around to the meats. Oh, and as you pass the empanadas, be sure to try a pollo one. They are unbelievable. The crust is so light and flaky, and they;re seasoned perfectly.Be sure to haver the pork - it's the best I've had since my last trip to the Caribbean, or Little Havana. It's just awesome.
