Reservations for a party of eight, Friday night. Wife's birthday dinner. Complete and total failure on every aspect of service. While waiting fot the remainder of the party to arrive we were seated, no menus provided, no drinks served. No explanation of the differing specials laid out. 20 minutes later water is served. Still no menus, still no bread. Entire party ready to order, including an option off their list of specials. 40 minutes in bread arrives. Another 5 minites later the waiter comes back to see what trick i was able to play by getting a non existant special. Rather than hold back all our meals a request for simple spaghetti and meatballs is made. Hour after arriving salads and soups arrive. Another 15 or so the meals come. Nothing but meh all around. The bonus was getting spaghetti, sans meatballs. No requests if we would need anything, drink refills, etc. Another bonus was the effort of trying to get a gluten free option to go with the completely unaware waiter. You are better off spending your time and effort anywhere else. I love Italian food! My boyfriend also loves Italian food, but is not as crazy about all the bread and pasta that usually comes with it, plus it is a little bit expensive (though worth it), so we do not come here as often as I might like. GENERAL I love the ambiance here. It really is how I imagine a little Italian cafe to be. I really should not say little, because it is a medium-sized restaurant, but it has a cozy feel. FOOD They have a fairly diverse menu, but both times I have been here, I have had the Pollo (chicken) Marsala. My boyfriend gets the Tenderloin Portabella. We also love the breadsticks with olive oil. I believe if I did not insist on only eating a couple because I know I want to enjoy my meal as well, I could probably just eat breadsticks and go away full. My chicken marsala is a large portion and comes with a side of pasta in sauce. The chicken is delicious, moist and juicy. The sauce is wonderful. I am not as thrilled with the sauce on the pasta, but it is okay. My boyfriend always seems to enjoy his meal as well, and I have had a bite of his entree once or twice and it was very good. One time, we also had dessert. We ordered the Ultimate Chocolate Cake. I probably do not need to say it was delicious, but I will. It was delicious! I only wish I could leave room for it every time. SERVICE I have never seen a server who was not polite and somewhat friendly. Both times we have been it was early in the dinner period (around 4pm) so they were not very busy. They are always quite timely and when you are done, they box up your food and neatly write the dish name and the date on the box. Even many of the nicer restaurants I have been to do not do this. This is a nice, relatively small restaurant that is pretty good. Yesterday was my 2nd time there, and it was nice. They had a live singer which added to the ambiance. The bread is so delish, good luck with your willpower on that. The salad (With house italian dressing) is okay, nothing special. I like the eggplant parmasean, and the special of the night I ordered, "Asiago Filet" was really good. Really I should have split it with someone. The wine carafes are reasonably priced also. I really dislike giving a bad review to a small locally owned business, especially during a pandemic when small business is trying to survive, but after my experience here last evening, I feel it needs to be shared. We arrived for an early dinner at 4:30 to celebrate my husband's and my son's birthdays. It had been a long time since we had been here and they used to do a nice happy hour from 3-5, so we asked about it. We were told by our server they no longer had their happy hour specials. My mother in law, who is elderly and can be a handful, simply asked why they no longer offered the specials. As the waiter explained, an older lady came over and had an attitude right away. I'm assuming she was the manager or possibly the owner. She asked if there was a problem, then very rudely said to my mother in law, "because you always seem to have a problem here". My mother in law was confused and asked what she meant by that. The woman responded and said one of her employees said that in a previous visit, my MIL had called this lady a B****h. My MIL was shocked. She had never said any such thing. I jumped in and defended my MIL. She does not use language like that. For this woman to take an employee's word over a customer and then treat us like this was appalling and completely uncalled for! My MIL as I said, can be a handful. She is demanding and can come off as rude, but she is elderly and doesn't always have the best approach with people. In a service industry, you have to take the bad along with the good and treat people kindly. I told this lady that she was being extremely rude and we would be leaving. We ended up going to Antonio's and had a lovely dinner and birthday celebration. We've enjoyed many meals over the years at Cariera's, but after this treatment of my mother in law, we will no longer spend another dollar there. read more

If your familiar with Italian dining in Detroit, you will know there is an abundance of very good place to get your fill. They are all great and I think all the arguing about the best italian is regionally based on what you know, and what is close to you (kinda like italian bakeries... it's the best because you have been going there since you were 5). I have done the test and ate at most of the good italian spots around town and cannot say one is better than the other because they are al amazing at what they do. I was giving a $50 gift certificate to this place by uncle because him and my grandmother hold it in high regard. I cannot argue with their taste, the place was great. My girlfriend got a tri-colored pasta that she was not particularly happy with, but not due to poor execution, more because of personal taste. I don't remember what I had the first time, but I went back again so it had to have been good. We happened to go on a friday our first time so there was a nice band playing to a packed house. My second time around was bit more disappointing. The food was still very good (gnocchi in a bolognese), but the service had changed significantly. Upon delivering the unfinished half of my pasta to my grandmother she informed me the change in food and service was due to the death of Mr. Cariera. She said she won't be going back now because "the sauce doesn't taste the same". I still think the food is pretty good though. read more

Great veal and the best tirimisu I ever had! Every time we have been there they have had a very talented guitar player there that plays a mix of standards and smooth jazz like covers of rock songs. He keeps the volume on the guitar down to a conversation level so you don't have to worry about having to yell and it wont hurt your ears. The food and service is excellent! And the dining room is very clean. I recommend Cariera's to everyone! read more

Ambience - Very nice and clean place. They have live solo guitarist at dinner to set a more romantic mood. Service - Wait staff has always been above average. Food/Drinks - Food is above average with large portions. Overall - I have ate here many times and enjoyed every meal I have tried. The shrimp Alfredo is awesome here, the shrimp is jumbo sized and the quality and flavor of the food is just paid attention to. I love coming here because the staff is really friendly and it has that home cooked meal feeling which I like. Their new outdoor patio is really nice and very private although it being on telegraph road. The ranchy Romano dressing in the best I've ever had. I love dipping it with the bread. The meatballs are jumbo sized and filled with lots of flavor. This place is a must try in the Dearborn Hgts area. Also you have to try their homemade Cannoli. They are to die for! read more

Last month we met up here with another couple, at their suggestion. I had never been and looked at reviews...a few bad, a few good. So I thought, it could go either way. It was a wonderful evening!! The food was delish (I had Chicken Picatta) and the staff were wonderful to us all night...like we were family. Well thanks to yelp another gem was found. With very clean well staffed dinning area The homemade bread and dipping oil was excellent. For an appatizer we had the spinach and artichoke dip it was very good followed by a house salad with house dressing very good as well. Friendly hostess and staff, promptly graded and seated. Tom was a very friendly and great waiter. Our bruschetta appetizer with mozzarella was excellent as was our chicken lemon rice soup. I ordered the veal piccata for dinner and it was out of this world, and I am PICKY. Seriously the best cut of meat I have had in a long time, no knife needed. My Son ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and it was great. My husband also ordered a veal dish with asparAgus, flavor was great, but the cream sauce was a bit heavy for his liking. My wife and I placed an order for delivery this past Sunday (2/11/2018) around 6pm. The woman that took our order, Char I believe, was very nice and helpful. We ordered an appetizer and two dinners, nothing large or out of the ordinary requiring extra time to prepare. We waited, and waited, and waited for our food. After an hour and a half, I called the restaurant to inquire about our food. I was told that the driver had left, taking five deliveries with him and wasn't answering his phone. A half an hour after I called, for a total of almost two hours waiting, our food finally arrived. I ask you, is two hours acceptable? The food was cold and dry, the appetizer was rubbery and cold. We're not impressed with the service we received, normally your food is good and we like eating there but I can't think of a reason for us to order again with that kind of service. read more

This is a lovely little Italian eatery with a wide selection of homemade menu items and a great wine selection also. Josiah, our server was amazingly attentive, courteous, and helpful. Visited tonight at 530 and the restaurant filled up very early for a Saturday night . Luckily we were seated right away. After an initial short delay because our waiter also had a very large party the rest of the service was absolutely perfect . We ordered veal parmigiana, meat ravioli, and a chicken pasta dish with olive oil roasted garlic shallots and peppers (can't remember the name ) . We all had the salad with house creamy Romano dressing . The complimentary bread and oil was delicious also. We all enjoyed our meal immensely and left nothing on the plate . It's very unfortunate when a manager give you a bad taste for a place you use to love. We came here on Friday 6/11/21 and we come here regularly at-least every 2 weeks. But last night will be the last. I sent my wine back because it tasted old and flat. I could hear her yelling from the kitchen "she must not know how wine taste" She came back to the table with the same glass and stated thats "that is how the wine taste and I probably didn't understand that" which is very insulting because I drink wine quite often. She refused to take it off the bill. Then they served us our spinach artichoke dip and it came with only 4 garlic bread which was not enough at all for the dish. Normally both side of the plate are filled with garlic bread but this time they only gave us half of the normal order. Which was very strange. We ordered the lasagna for dinner and when I got it I cut it in half touch it and it was ICE COLD. This place has gone downhill so much. It's very unfortunate when the manager doesn't try to make a situation better for a customer. Not to mention their A/C was broken and they offered no accommodation for that either. read more

One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. Not pretentious nor expensive. Food and service has consistently been good. Pleasant surroundings and yummy food. We always start with the calamari Cariera and are never disappointed. It is sautéed in a lemon sauce with capers, onions and tomato. I could drink this sauce it's so tasty. Of course we dip our bread and even have a friend that asks for this dish to be served with pasta; Cariera's always accommodates. Our recent visit included minestrone soup which is a house specialty. It's served thick and chunky with vegetables, beans and pasta. No complaints here. It's been cold out and the hot soup was perfect. Last we shared the eggplant parmigiana. We did ask for the kitchen to split our dinner but they did and also sent out two small pasta side dishes. Such a nice surprise. Great service, great food and generous portions. We will be back soon. So here's the thing, their food is good. Their service is beyond the worst; I have to stay they won the award for rudest restaurant service in my book. I have never encountered such treatment before and I wish I could do so much more about it. In fairness, I got the eggplant Parmesan and loved the sauce but the noodles were ok. We came here for a birthday celebration, party of 8. Everyone complained about how rude the waiter was being. First, he was incredibly late with everything we ordered as well as the starters. Second, we called him several times to get refills and ask questions and he would look the other way. Third, he spilled water over 2 phones and three guests!! Didn't even bother to apologize. Fourth, he complained about bringing the cake out when we had called in advance and made sure that they do such a thing. Fifth, the craziest thing in my opinion, several of us paid with our credit cards and he took it upon himself to manually add a generous tip (even after the traditional 20%). I wish I had taken a picture of the receipt; he literally wrote with a pen the added tip and calculated the total. Insanity at its finest! Then, when we complained to the manager, she came out soo late and refused to do anything. She kept defending the waiter and my entire party was shocked at her horrible handling of the issue. Oh, and I forgot to mention that several of our utensils were dirty at first. Man, I wish I could speak to the owner of the place. Poor person must be losing so many customers over such crappy service despite the decent food. Honestly, don't waste your time. There are so many better Italian restaurants in the area. read more

Since about 2007, I've been coming to Carieras with a good friend. My friend moved out of the area a few years back and I hadn't returned since. I've visited many Italian places over the years and while many have wowed me with their old school charm or impeccable service and plating - there's something about Carieras that stands alone and has me glad I've started to return. Many of the dishes on the menu (while not unusual ingredients) are well put together and rarely found elsewhere. I really like their tortelloni san vito as well as their tenderloin Portobella but there's so much on the menu I want to explore. Their spinach and artichoke dip is the *very* best I have had anywhere - seriously, I've looked. I wasn't as much as a fan of the funky bread they served with it - it was just kind of too soft to lift the cheese (not that it didn't taste good) but I was too busy enjoying it to ask for another option. My date ordered a pizza and was able to get half one way and half another. He didn't realize it was a whole freakin pizza either - we had plenty of leftovers. The portion sizes on our regular entrees have always been pretty good too. I highly recommend checking this spot out. I love this place, it's not pretentious, it is just a family Italian place with good food and decent prices. You can almost always find a $5 off coupon somewhere, either in the local saver you get in the mail or on their own carryout menu. I love their chicken marsala and chicken cacciatore. My husband loves the filet gorgonzola, which I don't even think is on the menu anymore, but they will still make it and it is incredible (two filets smothered in gorgonzola cheese, mushrooms, and a white wine sauce). I've had the chicken tosca, it is also really nice especially if you love lemon. The cannelloni is very good. It's not old and dirty like some old Italian places, it has a pretty good atmosphere, but can get pretty hectic by the door and small bar area as they do quite a bit of business. read more

I feel like this place is a hit or miss. I used to think it was my favorite restaurant in the area but not anymore. I really really love the bread dipped with Romano sauce so unbelievably amazing. Their minestrone soup is so amazing too! But the last time we were here, we literally sat at the table and no one came to serve us or get us water or anything we legit waited for 10 minutes to get a waitress and it wasn't even busy. I had to get up and go call for someone to come take our order. I thought that was pretty upsetting. The waitress we had was very slow and forgot about us a lot. For dinner I had the chicken parmesan and it wasn't as good as it was couple months ago. Chicken tasted weird, like it was under cooked and the chicken just tasted odd. For dessert I had the Tiramisu that was amazing as well! So tasty!! read more

Maybe this place is good for a person who's never been to a real Italian Restaurant in Manhattan. But I have and can't stand the McDonalds version of Veal Marsala or Chicken Piccata. Next time I'll go to Mario's in Detroit or Moro's in Allen Park for the real deal. read more
