This has been my favorite hole in the wall restaurant since I was a child! Now I have an 8yr old son & we stop in here frequently! The sweet tea is phenomenal & I always start with a glass & at minimum 2 refills. A few of my favorites include the fish & chips, mashed potatoes w/ chicken gravy, cabbage soup, clam chowder, coleslaw & the fish sandwich with a few extra toppings! I also love their homemade tartar sauce & my son loves their homemade ranch on literally everything he eats! They make great pizzas too. We arrived at the restaurant at 735pm They close at 8. The ENTIRE staff, including the owner, standing at the door GLARING at us and yelling out they were closed. We went back to our car and then went, "WHAT". The staff then walked out and went home. One of them parked directly behind us, blocking us from leaving. So we had to wait for her to leave. I remember this restaurant from 40 years ago. I'd hate to think my taste buds were so unrefined as to think the food was good. That's not the case. in the 80's you could get a good meal and quite often my family ate there. I moved back to Wayne after almost 40 years away. we tried to order twice in the past few months and there was no answer to the phone. Got lucky, or so I thought, tonight and ordered dinner for myself, husband and grandson. They only wanted salads so it's kind of difficult to mess that up but the pita was old and dry. The guys don't care what you shovel their way so it's ok. I made the mistake of liver and onions. I fully expected that this would be frozen and then thawed in the microwave before cooking so my expectations weren't too high. What I didn't expect, however, is that they would actually thaw it on high long enough to cook it. it literally was so tough I couldn't get a fork to pierce it. I picked it up with my fingers to take a bite and my teeth wouldn't do the job either. The mashed potatoes were instant, as is pretty much everywhere, but they had been mixed with too much water. They were runny and cold. Good thing the Cole slaw was edible. Sadly, I don't think I'll be going back for another 40 years - Maybe for my Last Supper. read more

There is a specialty room too for special events located on the second floor. A full motel is out back. This restaurant motel are easy to ready from Michigan Avenue which is Highway US-12. About 20 minutes from Detroit this location offers local ambiance - modern America mixed with mid to late 20th Century. The food is fabulous! They have a variety of delicious American staples like hamburgers, cheeseburgers, apple pie, of course and a selection of specialties. Their broasted corn is great. I can't describe the flavor. It is beautifully prepared and has a golden color and sweet flavor which is enjoyable. As for their broasted chicken it is really incomparable! They have seasonal decorations which are always surprising and upbeat. Behind the bar, at the register and all through the restaurant are items of memorabilia which are fun to look at and comment on and make for excellent conversation starters. Stayed at the apple inn and I wasn't pleased at all. We got a jacuzzi room and we got in the tub and black mold came out of the jets in the tub. Nasty nasty place. Seen drug deals at the gas station across the parking lot. Then at 6am the asshole in the next room started his truck with a super loud exhaust that his truck was backed in by the front door of our room. Then talked to the manager. My mom worked at this place 30 years ago, and NOTHING has changed. Same tables, booths, decor, and I think food. It's diner style food (not to be confused with the plethora of Greek Coney Island's out there). The food however is uninspired and lacking. I had a ham & cheese sandwich & vegetable soup. Meh, nothing special. The service was OK, but seemed that most of the servers were more interested in their conversations than tending to customers. It's open 24 hours and in from 1:00AM to 4:00AM you'll see some of the most eclectic people stroll in. Oh, and the're an adjoining motel to spend your time in too. I've visited the Red Apple several times during the past 20+ years. It's never been any better than a 2 - 2.5 star diner at its best, but the convenience of a 24 hour restaurant was alluring enough that I kept going. After tonight, though, I will never go there again. In the past, I've dealt with surly servers, incorrect bills and so much heat blasting from the vents that it made me feel nauseated. This evening, I attempted to dine there again with another person, but the rude owner decided to start a debate with me over a bottle of water. I would never bring soda or food into a restaurant because that could hurt their bottom line. I only drink water, though. Therefore, bringing in my own water actually saves the restaurant money. This is something I've done for years (including in the Red Apple many times) without anyone ever caring. When we walked in today, a man said to me, "You can't bring that in. There's no food or water allowed." I responded with, "I'm sure they won't care," to which he said, "I'm the owner, and I care." First off, it was only water. Second, he didn't attempt to say any of this in a polite manner. Third, this particular bottle of water had electrolytes added into it, which is something I have to have right now due to a medical condition. When I said something about the electrolytes, he didn't care. Instead, he told me, "if I let you bring it in, they'll bring stuff in." I'm not even sure who he meant considering the fact that the restaurant was almost empty and no one else was in the section we had chosen. In a nutshell, he turned away paying customers who usually have a bill of around $20 to $25 and who always tip well over a bottle of water that was going to save him money and was necessary for a medical issue. Additionally, he wasn't friendly, polite or conciliatory about any of this. It is understandable for him not to want soda or food brought into his establishment, but his willingness to lose customers over a bottle of water that was going to save him money is completely nonsensical. If he had at least been polite about this situation, I would have understood a little better, but that wasn't the case. I'll be going to the 24 hour Leo's Coney Island from now, which is a lot closer to my house anyway. read more

Now we're more likely to get one of the breakfast specials, well after daylight, in the morning. It's a greatly improved dining experience since the no smoking law went into effect. Haha! What is there to be said about The Red Apple. It's quite an interesting experience. Upon walking in, you see this hotel/motel that is connected to the restaurant. Rumor has it, it's "haunted". When you enter the door, it gives you an option to go downstairs into some bar/wine cellar thing. It's a mystery to me, because I've never seen anyone go down there. The patrons, are, uh, interesting. Let's just say similar to a truck stop esque atmosphere. It's very smoky, and you might get some shifty eyes, but overall the wait staff is extremely nice. On to the food. The food at The Red Apple is surprisingly delicious. The fried zucchini appetizer is awesome, and CHEAP. The pizza (you wouldn't even think of them having pizza) is pizzeria quality. The potato pancakes are excellent and the omelette's are giant. If you're out late and want to grab a bite to eat, with some "interesting" sights and sounds. I'd been by this place several times and it seemed like the kitschy sort of diner I tend to adore, but I didn't get a chance to stop in and try their food until recently. We stopped for brunch, and I was not disappointed. I like the decor - a bit of Bavarian plus 60s classic diner, or something... The service was friendly and fast, and the coffee is really, really good, and not just "good for diner coffee" but downright good. The decaf was only mediocre, though. Our breakfasts - I got a feta and spinach omelet - were huge and tasty. My only complaint is that the waitress got two things wrong: She gave me the wrong kind of toast, and charged my husband for a beverage though he only had a glass of tap water. However, both mistakes were corrected swiftly and politely. It's not a high-class joint, by any means, but if I lived closer to it, I'd be doing weekend brunches here often. read more

My wife and I stopped in here, because our errands took us past this place. We ordered two of their pizzas. They advertise that they serve New York style pizzas. And I have to say that unlike some New York style pizzas, their crust is not doughy. It actually has a bit of crispness to it on the outside with bready softness inside. The server suggested getting a garlic butter sauce on the crust, and it worked. It enhanced the flavor of the pizza. It was a good pizza. The decor is stuck in the early 1970s, but that is kind of retro cool in a way. It gives the place that small town feel which you don't often find in urban areas. And that gives it charm. However, the restrooms need work, because they have broken plumbing fixtures and a hand dryer which seems to be asthmatic in that it barely puts out any air and makes a lot of noise. They also have a bit of confusion where they have retro signs up advertising that they sell Coca-Cola products, but in reality they sell Pepsi products. To be honest, I heard horror stories about this place and had no plans to come here. My father and his girlfriend like to go here and they pretty much forced me to come. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The food was good, and fast. The waitstaff was friendly and never once slacked -I never had to ask for a refill or condiments. My dad (who hates every restaurant he's ever set foot in) didn't complain once He got the Ribs and this is a man who's very particular about his BBQ. The decor is a bit over the top (Applebee's on Roids) but unlike other places, you can tell they actually CLEAN all the goofy shit on the walls. My one and only complaint I have about this place - which is not the Red Apple's fault -was some of the other people who go there. While the bikers who all sat the counter were actually nice and pleasant people, some of the other 'regulars' were loud and creepy. While my dad's girlfriend and I were outside smoking, a man actually walked out of the adjacent hotel to the back of the gas station and pissed on the wall. Didn't try to hide it or stand where we wouldn't see EVERTHING -including his C&B hanging out his pants. He even smiled at us as we turned away in horror. I haven't been here at night, but I hear it's a whole different crowd of people -most of which you don't want to deal with. But for Breakfast and Lunch, The Red Apple is pretty sweet! read more

Third trip here first time I ate the spaghetti and broasted chicken not too good, second time soup and grilled cheese sandwich can't really mess that up so it was good, and tonight for a late night dinner I chose this spot. I picked a meal off of their "special menu" and if you have never been here it's a hand written small piece of paper so if you only see the standard large plastic menu ask for it. I ordered Salisbury steak it came with corn, choice of mashed/baked potato, and soup or salad. This Salisbury steak was the best I have ever had in my 40 years of eating my mothers frozen tv dinners, grade school and military chow halls. I have a better appreciation for the Salisbury steak now. Great price for the above meal only $8 plus taxes and they thru the coffee in. The waitress brought my food to me to-go so easy fix and I appreciated the piping hot free java. Strange characters here though I try to sit at the bar stool counter think that's what it is called for the conversations with the regulars never a dull moment lmao! Some of the waitress's look a lil weathered or warn out. It is attached to a risqué looking hotel however I haven't had any threating situations. Then again I might be the situation lol. Wifey and I stopped in here recently for the first time. Our waitress, Jasmine, was awesome! Down to earth, and on her A game. In fact, all the staff we encountered were really friendly people. We split the smelt dinner. Huge portion! Straight from the kitchen, piping hot. We both ate until we were full, and still had to ask for a take away box. Aesthetically, the interior is dated, but very clean. But I don't even care anymore. It's hard enough trying to find a place to eat that serves good food consistently, let alone looks pretty inside. I ordered the Bfast special which came with your typical eggs, meat, hash browns and toast. The only thing I was kind of disappointed in was the hash browns. When I lived in Wayne I would go here on a daily basis. Enjoyed the atmosphere and all the workers. Friendly polite and always doing a great job serving their customers. Live in Arizona now and visit whenever I go back. Nothing has changed. My last visit was for the passing of my brother. Not only was I greeted with love and kindness but the owners and employees all showed up at funeral home. Then treated us to a great after funeral meal for friends and family. So my morning was horrible at this place, I used to come here as a kid a lot and I forgot why I stopped, till now. The waitstaff wasn't friendly and most of the time they were busy talking to themselves. We only ordered breakfast and it took 20 minutes. I never was asked for a refill on my beverage which is a waitressing 101. I pretty much had to go up and ask for a box, oh! and since usually restaurants give you a dessert for your birthday, I asked and she said okay brb, then came back to say since I didn't ask soon enough there was nothing they could do. I don't think I will come back till they either get new employees or new management.
