I had read great reviews, but unfortunately our garments were late (we gave 3+ weeks for hemming of 3 items, but our deadline was firm and let them know) and we had to rush in the day before leaving. And the work was done very poorly. They did a same day re-hem on our dress because it looked lumpy, crooked and horrible on the outside as well as inside. While it was less bad after the redo, it wasn't done well and we had no choice, but to take it as is because we were leaving for our trip. This dress was unlined and the simple single hem was $35. The other two pairs of pants looked okay on the outside, but beyond bad inside. We didn't even bother to try and get them redone. We went on our trip and had them redone by another place. It was a huge waste of money. Please consider if your important and timely items should come here. They were very nice, but never offered a refund and just said they'd redo them which we didn't have time for. read more

I've been going to Carlos for about 25 years, I guess it's time to review his shop. The shop is clean, has nice dressing rooms, no funny odors. The tailors all work right out in the open. The place gets pretty busy and be ready for about two weeks on alterations. Typically, I get my off the rack suits adhered for sleeves and pants. With the pants it's the waist, crotch and length. I don't remember exact item pricing. But the work done right and I got a lot of compliments regarding the fit. Carlos will give you the anticipated pickup day but also calls you to let you know when everything is done or if he needs a little more time. read more

I have heard from a few friends that have taken their clothes here and we're very happy with the work, the pricing and the communication that Carlos gave them. I had brought in 2 items at separate times. And timing of completion was great. I had a zipper to a pocket of my NF jacket that it was off track. Looked like it may need to be replaced. I also needed the pocket smaller. I didn't think they would be able to put the zipper back on track. No problem, they got it done and it works fine. They also made the pocket smaller and I was happy with that. The other item was a 20+ yr old NF coat that I love. The slider broke and I was hoping that the slider could be replaced and. Ot the fuller zipper. Again it was done with a new slider and it was less than a week. I would come again with more tailoring. read more

My family and I have been frequenting Carlos' Tailor Shop for the past five years for a variety of items: suits, evening/bridesmaids dresses, dress pants, khaki pants, etc. They generally have pretty good judgement and advise for the alterations but they are also very receptive of feedback and will adjust according to my preferences. I have never been on a time crunch for my alterations so I would generally pick up them up after two weeks. But if you are in a hurry, be sure to let them know when you would like to pick up the clothes. The prices are very reasonable and they have allowed me to bring it back for corrections if needed. I have not had to make any corrections to their alterations though. read more

I requested a navy blue liner for my blue leather jacket. They charged me $90 with half deposit and told me to wait a month. It took one week longer than scheduled but turned out rather well. I've since moved away from this area but I had a bridesmaid dress altered here, and the experience was pretty great. They have you change into the garment and pin you on the spot, asking about which areas you wanted to focus on. The price was very reasonable. I had the dress hemmed, straps shortened, and a hole fixed for only $55. They forgot to take down my phone number when I left the dress though so I wasn't notified it was ready for pickup until I called on the day they told me to. I have used Carlos' Tailor shop for years now. I used to use them in their old location as well. I have taken dresses, shirts, suits and even more formal gowns and they always do an exceptional job. They are constantly busy but they always have reasonable turn around times and more times than not they call to tell me my items are finished sooner than quoted. Carlos is always super friendly and although I always forget the mans name who sits at the machine, he is also very kind and has attention to details. Days before my buddy's wedding (I'm a groomsmen by the way) the shirt is super loose and long exactly how I bought it before going to Carlos. Nothing changed about the shirt except the stomach section. When it was ready to pay the worker that was there, he said Carlos should've told you to shorten the sleeve. I specifically asked for that but he just told me to just use the second button on the sleeve. I will never come back here again and let my friends know as well. read more

If your looking for an amazing service and a trusted tailor that knows his stuff, then Carlo's is the right guy for you. They worked to save me from a disaster. So I had a suit ordered from Macy so I had Macy's tailor go over the initial adjustments. Macy didn't do the adjustment I had even asked for and the tailor messed it up bad, they cut the fabric where they didn't needed to. I had a half ruined new suit and I was running out of time. I only had a couple of days left until the wedding I was attending. I don't know how but Carlo's was able to rush my adjustments - done the right way- the day of the wedding, saving me big time from looking like a complete dumbass. Cannot recommend any higher on their professionalism and skills. Also he's a pretty funny guy, ripped into Macy's as soon as he saw the suit. read more

Carlos's is wonderful for the little alteration jobs for everyday clothes. They are definitely more reliable than a dry cleaner, but the prices are comparable and budget friendly. Most of the items that my family and I have brought here for slimming and hemming items turned out great. When I requested a more complicated task, cutting the sleeves off a dress - I had to bring it back for correction, because they narrowed the shoulders instead. Carlos does the fitting and pinning, but it was lost in communication to his team. In the end, I still didn't love the final results, and I would stick to the simple stuff. I feel like it makes a difference when the actual tailor sees the clothes on your body and understands how to fit it properly. If it's taking up jeans, pants or dresses, I'll highly recommend. read more

I have used Carlos for 3 years now and will post my original review below (which still holds true today). I'm new to Chicago (Hyde park area) and needed a tailor that could give me quick turnaround on a shirt before flying out to a wedding. After calling a few places that laughed at me, I came across Carlos' number, and he immediately agreed to take care of it for me (with no extra charges for next-day service). I am very lucky that I brought my shirt to him that day, as I have now brought three more shirts and two pairs of jeans. Carlos' prices are unbeatable (roughly 50-60% of what you would expect to pay on printer's row) and his work had always been flawless. He takes a lot of pride in his work and always makes sure that the the alterations are done when he says they will be. He is also very easy to work with, and overly flexible when it comes to pick-up dates and quick orders. I will be using Carlos for as long as I live in Chicago. read more

I was hustled. They spent all of one minute measuring pants on my body (I should have walked out there, but I didn't). They forced me to pay cash up front after I asked if I could pay when I picked up. Then a week later I was called to retrieve the pants. I went from an expensive pair of wide leg trousers to a pair of tapered floods. They then tried to take out the hem after I complained but the damage was done. I could see how much fabric was left and it wasn't going to be enough to remedy the problem as over three inches was removed from the pant leg length. I wouldn't bring nice clothes here unless you're okay with lazy craftsmanship. read more

I went to Carlos for many years to tailored jacket, coat, and shirts. But this time, I went to tailored some pants for the first time and did not tapered the pants to my requested even when measurements were provided. They lack the skills to tapered pants. Please do not prepaid the service as he will not give you a refund or make corrections to a certain extend. I prepaid the service as I trust their skills due to my past experience, however, this is a lesson learned. Only pay when the service is completed to your satisfaction. Due to this incident, the customer service is terrible. In addition, service was delay again and again. He is always in a rush and not really listen to the customer as he think he know it all. This can be avoided if he listen carefully and do it correctly the first time. At the end, pants were never tapered to my requested which I loss time and money. I am not satisfied with the service. Therefore, I highly do not recommend Carlos's Tailor Shop. read more

Terrible experience! I called to see if they would accept walk-in's and the man asked what I need. I need a fabric belt to be made shorter as its too long. He said we don't ever do belts. It is not a leather pant belt I explained it is just a fabric I need stitched shorter to go around a dress (it also came with my dress). He said no and hung up. SO RUDE. I bring in two dress pants for alterations. I try on the pants, told Carlos I wanted a modern slim fit, he puts on a bunch of pins on my pants, I pay, and then I'm sent on my way. Literally was in and out in 5 minutes. At that point, I'm thinking "man I hope these pants come out right." Within a week or less, I pick up the pants, try them on, and the pants came out perfect. This place is great. I was able to bring in a dress for alterations and get it back in 24 hours. The price was a bit alarming, $35 for hem and a little lift at the shoulder. The dress is sleeveless, so only about 2" at shoulder. So much for getting the dress on sale. To be fair, I've never taken a dress in for alterations, and this may be the going rate. My dresses would always go to my tailor grandfather or dad for alterations. I guess it's time for lessons. read more
