We love going to Carl's for a wide variety of reasons. I would say it is one of my favorite quintessential local spots. The regulars are the regulars which is so nice to see because it reminds me of going out to breakfast with my dad & my papa growing up. It's a small place in a great way that you hear the buzz of conversations, your coffee gets topped off on the regular, you can hear them making the meals in the kitchen. We've gone for many a meal but this last one I had took the cake. It was homemade chicken biscuits & gravy that I devoured as soon as they set my plate down. We've had many a breakfast & lunch there that we've had a variety of great things- kielbasa breakfast, breakfast sandwiches, club sandwiches, hotdogs, the list goes on. My boyfriend also likes to get a slice of pie every now & again because they're all homemade. You have to make sure you get there early or order the pie first sometimes though because once it's gone it's gone. A great place that's worth the wait if there is one. If you are in East Syracuse you need to stop in to Carl's. I am in Syracuse once or twice a year and I make sure I stop in for breakfast or lunch. They only accept cash, no credit cards. The service is always spectacular and friendly. I have never had a bad meal there. Their soup is homemade and everyone of their variety is delicious, I love their mushroom soup. This place is the quintessential American diner. It's adorably decorated in small town style without feeling dirty or dingy. The staff could be the description straight from a Hollywood movie. The waitresses are juggling several customers with the smooth grace of years enjoying what they do, all while holding conversations with the elderly regulars around the counter. "Mom" is even behind the counter, just focusing on keeping a fresh pot at hand and making sure those regulars coffee is never cold or low. I'm sure I'm not doing justice to just how warm and lovely this diner is from the moment we walked in the door. We were greeted by Marianne, who is energetic and happy and makes you feel right at home as soon as you sit down. I love the classic diner feel to this place and the warmth of the staff and camaraderie with the regulars. It was like a scene right out of a movie, especially when Marianne started yelling Dad jokes... in fact, this diner has been featured in movies, that's how authentic it feels! We had so much fun hearing the stories and chatting with her about their filming experiences at the diner! After much deliberation, I ordered a pancake with chocolate chips and my husband ordered the fretta. The food is reasonably priced (cash only) and came out quickly. Their home fries are exactly as I had hoped and I highly recommend getting cheese with them. Service was excellent and our coffee was never empty. On a recent visit, we had the Soup Of The Day - creamy chicken vegetable. That was all generally good. And a BLT, which was also good, but some bacon ends were not fully cooked. The disappointment came with a "3 egg" western omelet - to go. In a big box was a 4" X 4" thin one (why the big box ?) with crunchy green peppers & onions and NO HAM! This place has been around for ages in Eastwood. I used to go here with my Mom years ago and I have a lot of memories here. Went today with my sister about half hour before closing and the waitress was so pleasant ( she has worked there a long time) and it just feels like home. My breakfast/lunch was perfect, the eggs were cooked just right, the home fries were soft and browned but not burned and not too crispy. The kielbasa was browned and not too salty. This diner does a quick business. As busy as they get the wait staff are as swift, flying through a full tables and counters with speed and skill while providing very friendly service. The menu is standard and simple breakfast fare done well. The pancakes I ordered the other day were fluffy, and the eggs came as ordered. (I take my scrambled dry and my husband is an over-medium sunnyside guy). The regular patrons themselves are really nice with a welcoming vibe even to sporadic visitors such as myself. I have driven by Carl's on a number of occasions in the afternoons and thought there was another closed, as in out of business, establishment. I found them on Facebook, where they actively post their daily specials https://www.facebook.com/carlskountrykitchen?rf=353373021390174. So, I knew they were alive and well and I needed to try their offerings. I was aware of the fact that they only accept cash as payment. There is an ATM inside Carl's if you really have no other option. So, armed with cash, I parked in their lot, observed the basic, clean exterior and walked inside. I was very pleasantly surprised to see a very clean, well preserved small diner in front of me. There is counter service and booths. There are no table and chairs. I sat at the counter and then helped myself to a menu that they seem to strategically position at certain areas of the counter. There are two "U" shaped counter areas with swivel seats that are affixed to the floor. A laminate or formica counter, vinyl covered chairs, stainless steel milk dispenser, a large coffee brewer, a small pass through opening to the kitchen, and an old fashioned phone booth all added up to a nice retro diner feel...except, it is apparently not retro, it's real. Families, college students, retirees, blue collar, white collar were amongst the customers present at my breakfast visit. Two waitresses handled the counter and booths without missing a beat. Everyone was greeted when arriving and thanked when leaving. Good work !! The number of people that the waitresses knew by name or were even able to place their orders without the customers asking was really impressive. They have a loyal following and with good reasons. As I said, service was very good and I really enjoyed my entire experience. The food, I was there for the food but, got distracted by how much I enjoyed the pleasant environment. I only reviewed the breakfast section of the menu. They offer a fairly standard fare of eggs, omelets, pancakes, french toast, breads, muffins, hot and cold cereal etc... They have several combination plates with the most expensive being $7.25...and they all included coffee with refills ! I had the #7 with 2 eggs, 2 pancakes 3 strips of bacon, 3 sausage links, and coffee included. Of course, before I reviewed the menu, I was given my coffee and I never felt rushed by the staff. My dish came out maybe 10 minutes or so after I ordered. I didn't pay attention to the exact time because I was enjoying a relaxing experience. My eggs were cooked spot on, the sausage was of the real sausage link variety ( not a brown and serve type), bacon was crisp and fresh and the pancakes steaming hot and with a nice flavor and texture. My coffee was refilled without my needing to ask and I enjoyed a very good breakfast, great service all at a great price. I would like to give 4.5 stars but, it's not a Yelp option. This place shouldn't be missed and is worth the trip. read more

A nice little (emphasis on the little) diner on the north side, pretty much the corner of Court St (298) and Teall Avenue. We had been one of the legion of Stella's fans, but after the last couple of experiences there (very mediocre), we are looking for a new favorite place. This might not make the top spot, but it was quite respectable - very basic menu, no specialties, but everything arrived at the table hot and was quite tasty. If you are looking for that perfect bowl of fall Chili - this is it. Trust me. I was brought up on the best Chili ever that my Dad used to make. Nothing in Syracuse even comes close (until now). As a result I can't even order Chili at most all restaurants. It is just always disappointing. Those days are over forever! I of course only ordered a cup of Karl's Chili to go with my lunch (this is because 99.99% of all Chili I have ever had is so disappointing as compared to my Dad's that I won't even eat it - and no sense wasting more than a cup). The Chili was nearly identical to my Dads in consistency, (it's much juicier than the typical CNY Chili - most of which from my experience would make a better bean dip than a Chili - I never understood that), only quite a bit spicier (which is a good thing)! The flavor was OUTSTANDING, and yes, I did regret only having a bowl. Not to worry I ordered a bowl to go for later tonight - and I WILL be back tomorrow for lunch! I cannot fathom how a place like this has 4.5 stars. We dropped by this place for brunch as we drove through Syracuse because it has 4.5 stars. The toasts were served soaked in margarine, not even butter. Only when we sent it back, the server brought us a couple of single serve butter.
