A proper old school diner close to 690 and 481. It is about 5 minutes from the Thruway. My uncle ran a diner, so I have standards. This was the best diner breakfast I've had in a very long time. I'll get my one grouse, not a complaint, out of the way first. The rye bread didn't have seeds. But... The coffee was fresh ground. The pot emptied so fast it was always fresh brewed. I'm a weird coffee person, and that was the best cup out of a Bunn maker I've ever had. The scrambled eggs were properly cracked from the shell, not from a bucket. The sausage patty was made with a mild breakfast sausage, hand formed from loose sausage. Home fries were cooked on the grill with enough peppers and onions to qualify as a serving of vegetables. (My wife approved.) If that is not old school enough for you, the rye toast was grilled, not toasted. Service was great, and the coffee cup never was empty. The parking lot in back is small, so if you have a large vehicle do yourself a favor and park across the street. We went on a Sunday morning. The place was full, but tables turned over quickly enough that we didn't wait. One nice touch, the bowls for creamers and jam were Syracuse China. You have to love a diner that is home town proud. I am leaving one star for the wonderful waitress who somehow managed to serve everyone in the entire restaurant single-handedly and with a smile. Unfortunately, I found that despite some good reviews, this place is subpar. I paid $35 for two breakfasts. I was served a dish with two eggs, two thin slices of toast, I don't know how they slice the toast that thin, a huge plate of greasy home fries, and bacon that was so greasy it was inedible. The floors were filthy and I can't imagine they have been washed in months. This is a small space and tables are crammed everywhere making it difficult for the waitress to move around. My husband said the men's room was simply disgusting. The flies on the window next to us eagerly looked at our plates, waiting to pounce at the first opportunity. Visiting Syracuse for a couple of days to see our son and take in a football game (disastrous loss). We always go to Mother's which is great but we wanted to try a new spot. This place came up on Yelp and I am glad it did. Sorry about the lack of photos. It is a diner with a large counter and some tables. There was a wait of 15 minutes for a table but there were 2 counter seats in front of the grill which was perfect to see all the food being prepared. The staff were awesome. Service was great despite it being super busy. The food was fantastic. They had a great selection of items. I had the veggie omelette with a side of corned beef hash. The hash was fantastic. My wife had the Greek omelette with a side of the Spanish potatoes which were fabulous. Prices are reasonable and they take cash or card which is convenient. Definitely try this for a great meal and some great conversation with the locals who are very friendly. read more

My husband and I were in Syracuse for "Wicked" and we stayed overnight. We come to Syracuse quite a bit and, as of about 40 minutes ago, we hadn't found a favorite breakfast place. When my husband read a ridiculous one star review, we knew we had to stop in. We both agree, we have now found our favorite breakfast place! First, the food....I ordered the #2 breakfast (2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 sausage and 2 bacon. The pancakes would be more than a meal by themselves. Thank goodness my husband wanted one of them. They were huge and fluffy and delicious! I ordered my eggs scrambled and they too were light, fluffy and cooked for the perfect amount of time. The bacon was delicious and the sausage was nicely browned and tasty. My husband ordered hash, eggs and toast. I tried a bite of his hash and WOW! We both think it had to be made in house. Second, the atmosphere....this is a classic, old school diner. We sat at the counter and enjoyed watching the masterful cooking on the flat top. Lastly, the staff was super friendly and attentive. Even though this was our first visit, the friendliness of our server made us feel like regulars. Stopped in at 11:15 on a Sunday on the recommendation of the write up in the post standard. Tiny place but we were seated quickly. The table was dirty- but was wiped down once we were seated. We ordered a frittata and a breakfast #2 (pancake, eggs, bacon etc.). I requested Italian toast with the frittata and was told no problem (it comes with toast). I was never asked what kind of cheese I would like with my frittata. Food took almost 30 minutes to arrive. Too long for what it was and how busy the place is. My partners dishes all came at separate times so that stunk. I ended up with white toast and a small frittata. The food was fine. My partner thought the sausage was exceptionally greasy. I also overheard they ran out of bacon...it's 11:30 on a Sunday and you run out of bacon at a diner??? Bill was 39 and change for two small breakfasts. The frittata was advertised as 15.00 on the menu but the bill had it at 17.25- why? Beats me. Too expensive for a poorly run establishment. I will not be back. read more

Neat lil diner in East Syracuse. It's a lot bigger than it looks. Don't let the outside appearance fool you, the Redwood Diner is a gem of a find. We stopped in mid-morning while running errands, we've driven by hundreds of times and finally decided to stop, we are glad we did. The owners were very friendly and welcoming, and we were greeted seated right away. The menu is pretty well stocked with great options along with daily specials. HIDDEN GEM! I always make it a point to stop in the Redwood Diner every time I come to Syracuse. It is by far the best breakfast of my entire trip, every time! Personally, the Oreo pancakes are my favorite - they're a guilty pleasure - but EVERYTHING is tasty on the menu. Ate here on a Sunday morning on the way back from a college visit with my youngest daughter, meeting up with my oldest who goes to school in Syracuse. At first the outside appearance was a bit sketchy for my girls but after they peaked inside, they gave it a thumbs up as they know it was the kind of place I was looking for. We ate in the dining room, but after attempting one of the tight-squeeze booths, our waitress suggested we pull together two small tables... much better. I'm a sucker for corned beef hash and usually skip the home fries so as not to double-down on the potatoes but this time I shot the works and was glad I did. The hash was great, the home fries unbelievably good with chunks of red peppers, and my eggs over easy were cooked perfectly. Two generous slabs of buttered rye toast were a delightful surprise to make for a hearty breakfast indeed. My girls opted for pancake, egg and sausage combos and cleaned their plates, too. Amazing little diner that is inside of an old train car. My daughter and I found this place in east Syracuse and couldn't have been happier we did! Got there just as they were closing up but we were welcomed in and treated with incredible service and incredible food. The blueberry waffles were perfectly crispy on the outside and light and airy on the inside. The home fried potatoes and bacon and eggs were perfectly cooked and they even gave us a side order of delicious French toast on the house while we were waiting.
