All of the 5 star reviews must be for the donuts because the Thai food was awful. My husband, brother-in-law, and I had lunch here today. We all love Thai food, and decided to try this place based on reviews. I had the Massaman (yellow) curry with chicken, ordered medium spicy. It was served very mild, the potatoes had a very strange taste, and the curry itself wasn't very flavorful. If anything, the only flavor in the dish, tasted like expired coconut milk. I was not able to finish my lunch, and left hungry. My husband and brother-in-law both ordered Pad Thai with chicken (which I tried a taste of as well). Their Pad Thai had little to no flavor and no spice at all. One of them described his dish as "gritty." Also, huge drawback for me, this place is not eco friendly at all. Everything was served in/on plastic, disposable, non-recyclable products. Cups, plates, utensils, everything was single use. Suffice to say, we will not be going back, and gave it two stars because the guys were able to finish their lunch, and no one died. Not trying to be rude, I just like to be honest about our experience, as Yelp is how we try to find good food when we travel and/or move to a new city. Our family & friends LOVE Carlson's. Everything we have ordered has been phenomenal (my favorite is the chicken masiman curry). Sometimes you may be lucky to stumble in when there are leftover donuts -- buy a few because they are a treat in of itself. The staff is friendly, the order to pick-up time is efficient, and the food is wonderful. Zero complaints with this gem. Be a bit forewarned, they mean it when they say spicy. I am a self proclaimed donut connoisseur. Imagine my surprise when this place showed up as the top donuts in the Annapolis area. Donuts and Thai... WTF? However, my visit here did not disappoint. Came here around 11a.m. on a Saturday morning... big mistake! The sweet little lady behind the counter could tell that we were first timers and explained that they only make a certain amount of donuts each day. She recommended coming earlier for a bigger selection. Although the selection was lacking, the remaining donuts did not disappoint! I love a good yeast donut (F this cake donut fad that's going on-- I'm talking about you Fractured Prune/Sandy Pony, etc.!). The yeast donuts here were delicious-- soft, squishy, and sweet! She even piled a handful of donut holes into a napkin and told us to enjoy them in the car before we got home to eat the box of donuts. Forget Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme! In Annapolis, Carlson's reigns supreme. The donuts are rich but not heavy and you don't have to squint your eyeballs looking for the toppings and fillings. Fear not, coffee lovers, for there are two self-serve canisters of decaf and high-test sitting right next to the counter. The cream is hidden in a tiny fridge below, so just reach in and pour til your heart's content. The young lady behind the counter always greets you with a smile and what she lacks in knowledge of the King's language, she more than makes up for in hospitality. Should you prefer a little breakfast with your donuts, there are many breakfast sandwiches and platters available to make the morning bright. The home fries are quite good but a bit unusual, with just a hint of onions and green peppers mixed in for good measure. Lunch is served at high noon. Standard American fare is the order of the day here. Burgers, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, you get the picture. Nothing spectacular, but no one goes away complaining. I can't speak as to the Thai menu, as I've yet to indulge. But friends of mine, who have sampled such fare, have been known to go back for more. The dining area is clean but small, and most patrons do carry-out. A couple of cautions are in order. a)The donuts will be scarce by 12 noon and probably gone by 2pm. b)They close their doors between 2pm and 5pm. Why? I'm not quite sure. Perhaps that's siesta time in Thailand. So, if your heart is set for some luscious donuts, come early or you'll have to drive a mile up the road and settle for Dunkin Donuts. AMAZING place- their Thai food is delicious and the placeis run by a Thai grandmother who is the kindest, sweetest soul you will ever meet. We came here randomly on a Sunday afternoon, and they were closed, but when we called, they opened up the restaurant and cooked us our own Thai meal. We ordered drunken noodles, red curry and tom yum and tom kha gai soup (with coconut milk)- everything was freshly made and delicious. The red curry probably could have been a little more coconut milky and thicker, but in general, it was great. The donuts are really good too, they gave us a few to sample and they were fresh, doughy and delicious!! They make their own flour in house fresh every day for the batch of donuts that day. This review is for takeout order. We had the drunken noodles and the pad thai. The drunken noodles were amazing!! It is better than the ones I've had in NY. The noodles were well cooked with a hint of spice which made me enjoy it even more!! The pad thai noodles were thinner than what I am normally used to but it was delicious. I think there was some tofu and egg with the pad thai as well. They also gave us free donuts to try! We were able to snag an apple fritter and a chocolate donut. and MY GOODNESS it was amazing. Wow, this place is popular! and it has great ratings! But a Thai restaurant AND donut shop...what gives? Does it have the acclaim for the donuts or the thai? The thai food is great. I've had it on a number of occasions (always take out) and it's definitely some of the better thai food in Annapolis. I'd give it 4 and a half stars. But now lets talk donuts. The donuts are incredible, probably the best donuts on the planet. They aren't weird or gimmicky (see Voodoo Donuts in Portland, OR). They're straight forward and delicious. If you want to get a good taste of them try the apple fritter, sour cream, potato, and cruller. Those are (in my opinion the best). You'll eat all four of them, guaranteed. So the fact that they do great thai, and spectacular donuts, this is a 5 star establishment. The inside isn't great, but there are a good number of tables. Had tum yum soup, papaya salad (hot is very hot); paw kraw fried rice with chicken and it's topped with a crispy, fried egg; pad see ew w beef (nice w chinese broccoli stems stir fried into it; it's like eating beef chow fun); green curry w chicken was also good; ended w mango sticky rice (good balance of saltiness and sweetness between the rice and mango) The food has different flavors compared to Ruan Thai in Wheaton. It's been almost ten years since I reviewed this restaurant, time for a refresh. In the age of COVID, the only thing that's really changed here is that there's no dine-in option. Take-out only. The food is still delicious and served in healthy quantities. I've sampled a good bit of the menu and have yet to find something I'm not keen on. Noodles dishes, such as Pad Thai and Pad See Ew, are excellent, as are the curries and stir-fries and assorted appetizers. And the donuts ... I know, a bizarre combination, but it works. The donuts are excellent, and if my doctor knew how often i had one of their cronuts for breakfast, he'd have my head on a platter. And they still give away leftover donuts with lunch and dinner, and they taste just as fresh the next day. They also adhere to preventative guidelines for COVID ... masks are required, and no more than four patrons inside at any one time. People are friendly, prices are reasonable ... what's not to like? Thai Kitchen IMHO serves up the best Thai food in town. read more

I've eaten here for over 6 years. My mom who has owned and operated restaurants in LA flys out to Baltimore and requests trips to Carlsons. This place is unassuming (which is what I like). If you're lucky enough to enjoy their donuts that a major added bonus. The owner was friendly enough to tell us her about the history of the restaurant and donut shop which is amazing in itself. We always order the drunken noodle and pad thai and experiment with whatever else is on the menu. We have NEVER been disappointed. A few months back, my neighbors suggested I try this place. I didn't want to cook when I arrived at home, so the night I chose I opted for the Gaeng Galee, it was so very good. I made note to all my coworkers the next day. I went back soon after to try the Pad Thai, my favorite Thai dish, that was just so-so. A few weeks later, I decided on Curry again, so I headed back to what I thought would become my favorite Asian Curry place. I placed the order over the phone close to closing, a minute or two after 8 p.m. When I arrived home, this is what I discovered: 1. It wasn't Gaeng Galee, it was a red curry dish, after expressly ordering yellow curry. I 2. The food must've be heated in the microwave, some of the chicken, potatoes were cold in places Very disappointed that I didn't get what I ordered as well as prep seemed a little rush for it to not have been heated thoroughly. I would've have preferred they told me it was too close to closing or they couldn't fulfill my order. read more

What an anti climactic experience. My family and I loved this place but the last few visits we made has been horrible. As I entered the place, I was greeted with "what you want?" I said I'm going to do a carry out as she handed me the menu. I took it and was looking at it. Odd, why would anyone greet you in a manner where you feel unwelcome? Then I flipped it over to look at the other side and she said that's appetizers. I said " I know" geez! Can I just look at the menu?! I think I've done a great job at looking at menus from other restaurants without you. . I made my order and she said it would be 10 minutes. 10 minutes later she came out with our food. We were about to leave when she said "are you gonna pay for that? " I said what? She said your drink. I said I brought it here, it's mine. She said let me see! And was about to grab it from me. I already said it's mine and she didn't want to believe me enough to try to do that?! It's obvious they don't carry the brand of my drink .Then she said oh okay. Wow! WTF is wrong with her?! I have only been treated this way by another Asian lady. It's been a terrible experience and will not be back after years of patronizing with this establishment. On to the food as we brought it home, she got my spring roll order wrong as it was not the one I had ordered. Then my pad Thai was dry, bland and unappetizing. I was skeptical about this place because they also sell doughnuts and I just thought that was odd, but boy was I wrong! Don't be fooled by the interior of this place too when you first walk in. My boyfriend and I decided to try the chicken pad Thai, shrimp drunken noodles, and green curry. The pad Thai was okay, nothing too spectacular. The drunken noodles were very good, but the green curry was my absolute favorite! It was so flavorful and I couldn't stop eating it. Before my enlightenment, I mocked. Mocked the wonderment that is Carlson's. How good could a place that sold Thai AND donuts be? I had seen this stunt before: Chinese and donuts, BURRITOS and donuts. All of which I turned my nose up to because of my prejudice. But I remained ignorant until one day I went. My eyes opened and I discovered that this place is consistently amazing! Well, it's not like I can actually comment on much of the menu. What's the point in diversifying when I absolutely can't get enough Drunken Noodles? Grab a donut while you're there. Join us enlightened ones. Seriously. You won't be disappointed. On my first trip there, they gave us 4 of them for free. I haven't been early enough to snag a fresh one in the morning, nor have I seen their full selection, but the standard glazed are fantastic! A word of advice: If you're going to dine in, the service CAN be a bit slow. It's not because of inadequate staff, but rather an inadequate number of staff. Usually they have two or three servers, which is plenty for the tiny dining room they have, but the last time I went there was only one for a nearly full house.
