We loved our stay at this charming hotel. We did stay during the renovation so some things may have changed since our visit. It was surprisingly quiet even though it was graduation weekend, maybe due to renovation. Front desk concierge was very kind and got us checked in quickly. I didn't have any noise or cleaning issues while we were there. The location is GREAT for walking around Atascadero downtown, and a short drive to San Luis Obispo. We were able to walk to bars and restaurants, and keep our car right across the street from the hotel. There is also a little bakery right next door to the hotel with lots of food and drink options. Such a cute hotel in the revitalized Atascadero downtown! Staff was friendly, the room was clean and beautiful, and the location is great. The price was incredibly reasonable for the quality of our stay too. Their cafe is under construction so has limited offerings and seats right now, but there is also a bar and restaurant right next door with great food. Upstairs there is a beautiful outdoor courtyard. I chose this hotel because it was pet friendly. Fortunately, I found someone to keep my dog, so he didn't come. The closest green space is in front of a capitol looking building with lots of people hanging out. My dog wouldn't have done well there. The hotel was built in 1925 and it's undergoing a major renovation. There's a bakery next door, but no restaurant in the hotel yet. The hotel looks old world charming, with freshly painted spaces, but it's still old. The light fixtures are large and ornate and have a yellowish glow. The FD clerk, Angela, was lovely. My room was a very nice size with windows that actually open, which I loved. There's also a huge full length mirror on the bathroom door. That's a nice touch. The fixtures in the bathroom are a gaudy gold and the lighting in the room is that same eerie yellowish glow, like the lobby. There's a cute little courtyard on the second floor. Super comfortable seating, plenty of shade and it's decorated so tastefully, it's perfect for recording content. However, the hallways were really dark. My room was 206 and it was at the far end of hall. All the way at the end, right next to a LOUD ice maker! However, I couldn't hear it inside my room and later that night I appreciated it being so close, so I could run out to it in my jammies . It's clearly an old hotel and new furniture and paint can't cover that fact. However, the location is perfect! I walked to everything! Restaurants, wine tasting, grocery store, bank, everything. The hotel has a very small parking lot across the street. Very small. Renovations don't continue on the weekends. I contemplated giving them three stars for this reason: They have a no refund policy. You have 24 hours after you make your reservation to cancel. That is freaking diabolical! That's why I'm saying "maybe". I paid just under $650 for two nights. read more

We are dismayed with the costumer service! We booked a room weeks in advance of a special trip that coincided with Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day weekend. At 4pm on the day we were to arrive, they left a voicemail saying our reservation was cancelled due to flooding. We were only an hour drive away at this point. We sat on the side of the road for over an hour looking for another hotel room available for that same night. Nearly everything was booked unless we wanted to spend thousands of dollars for one night! We finally found another place (for hundreds of dollars more!!) checked in and then got another call from Carlton, "when might we expect you?" Are you kidding?! They cancelled, in NO uncertain terms. To top it off, they have not refunded us for the night THEY cancelled. We've emailed twice, no response. This is unacceptable and unprofessional on every count. read more

This Hotel is in such disrepair, do not stay here. We used to stay here all the time 10+ years ago and loved it. We just passed through town and couldn't wait to see it again. We had no A/C almost no furniture in the room and couldn't sleep with the windows open because of constant sirens. I will never stay there again. read more

Booked a reservation with the hotel, got a confirmation from the hotel and a welcome email from the gm. They also charged my credit card. I show up and they have no record of me at all. I give the lackluster clerk my confirmation number and she says they send those out automatically but it doesn't mean you have a reservation. Really???!! At this hotel and no other ever!!! Had to drive 3 hours home at night in the rain. The clerk did not even try to assist. If you're looking for a place in the area I would not make a reservation here.. to quote the hotel.. if you have a reservation and confirmation ... that doesn't mean you have a room!! ... This is not the review I expected to leave for The Carlton, and I am disappointed that I am writing it. My husband and I are local to Atascadero, and we decided to take advantage of one of the local staycation packages offered for our anniversary. We had always wanted to stay at the Carlton but never got around to it, so we were really excited to finally pay this local gem a visit for a one-night stay. First, the pluses: The Carlton is a grand old lady, first opened in 1929. While she fell into disrepair in the 1980s, she was extensively remodeled and brought back to life in 2004. Much of her old world charm still exists, from the wood paneling, grand staircase, and stone floors in the lobby, to the adorable central outdoor patio on the second floor. The place has old world class with modern convenience. The afternoon/evening front desk clerk Cole gives A+ service. The lobby was still beautifully decorated for Christmas, which made it extra special. More pluses: The Carlton is conveniently located right in the old part of downtown, next to the sunken gardens (where we were able to see a launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base) and quite a few shops. We stayed on a Saturday night, and the hotel was quiet and our bed comfortable. The heating worked well and kept us nice and cost. Our second-floor room overlooked El Camino Real, having a fairly nice view. While there was some traffic noise with the windows open, once we closed them, the room was nice and quiet. The minuses: Housekeeping and general maintenance is lacking, which makes it impossible to give an entirely positive review. Our room had been freshly serviced, as evidenced by fresh sheets and towels, plentiful toilet paper, coffee pods, etc., but overall the room was in below-average condition, especially considering the facility is advertised as a "luxury" hotel. The furniture was worn, large paint chips were missing from the vanity in the bathroom, there was a large drink ring stain on one of the bedroom end tables, and the surface of the writing desk looked dirty from wear. The overhead attic access panel in the bathroom was covered with grimy smudges left behind by workers who had never bothered to clean up after themselves. While the room offered some bottled water and wine, these were not gratis. At $5 each for small bottles of water, this seemed like an expensive asking price given the cost of the room. Since the safety of Atascadero's municipal water source is debatable, as the local water company issues advisories concerning the presence of PFOAs "forever chemicals" in the supply, these bottles should have been offered free or at cost. By far the worst problem, which is why we can't leave a positive review, was that our room had a strange odor, and the carpet and upholstered furniture were desperately in need of steam cleaning. The carpet was literally covered in spots and dirt to the point that I didn't want to walk around the room without my shoes. Sadly, the grungy carpet was not confined to our room, but pretty well throughout the hotel common areas and even the staircase. The Carlton would do well to have Stanley Steamer come in and give the entire place a scrub down, because the hotel looks like this hasn't been done once in the 20 years since the hotel was renovated. I have stayed in "cheap" motels that have been far cleaner, so this was indeed a huge disappointment. We had looked forward to soaking in the jet tub as part of our stay, but given the poor condition of the room, we opted not to do so as we were put off by the dirt. We didn't bother to complain about the cleanliness to the daytime front desk staff person as her professional presentation and demeanor was lacking. Her way of communicating was unfriendly and unhelpful. We had been told there were extra goodies offered as part of our staycation package that we expected to find in our room that were not present. When we returned to the front desk after check in to inquire she acted like we were an inconvenience. If I was a schoolteacher giving letter grades, all in all, the experience was not what we had hoped for or expected. If our room had been spotless, I would give the hotel a solid A. With the grungy room, the best we can give it is a generous C-, and that's a bit of a stretch. I love old hotels and I want to see the Carlton do well, but it is clear this grand old lady is struggling from a general lack of care. read more

What an enjoyable stay! From the time we drove up to the front doors (leaded glass elegance) to the lobby I love the ambiance. I didn't get the young ladies name that checked me in but she was very helpful and understanding especially with us being somewhat grouchy but mostly tired. We had 2 rooms connected, 1 room 2 queen beds and 1 room with a king bed. Both rooms were spacious and not overcrowded with furniture. And the thing I loved was the room was quiet and had huge soaking tub which I really wanted to try but another time (big sigh). Definitely worth trying to go back for another stay. read more

There's something magical about the old-world charm that greets you the moment you step inside -- from the grandiose wooden staircase off the main lobby to the polished marble floors, every detail feels both intentional and nostalgic. Even the small touches -- key card envelopes and dog treats waiting in the lobby -- made the experience feel personal and elevated. Though renovations are ongoing, the hotel manages the process with true class. "Please excuse our dust" signage was tasteful, and at no point did construction impact the peace or quality of our stay. We loved the location -- right in the heart of downtown. So much within walking distance: cute shops, delicious bakeries, wine bars, and some top-tier people-watching. After a long day, relaxing in the clean and well-maintained jacuzzi tub was pure bliss!! The in-room wine and coffee bar were equally charming -- lovely touches that made us feel pampered. One of the most impressive aspects of the hotel? Cole! Truly one of the biggest reasons for our glowing review. I'm not sure if he picked up on the rough day I'd had or if he's just always this above-and-beyond kind of person, but after a day full of frustrating mishaps, I arrived at the hotel in a quiet, less-than-great mood. I couldn't wait to get to my room. To add to my day, a booking issue through a third-party site meant our reserved room wasn't available. Cole handled the situation with patience, calm professionalism, and kindness. Cole upgraded our room, offered a complimentary bottle of wine, and gave us fantastic dining recommendations. His thoughtful service completely turned my day around! If I had to offer one suggestion, it would be to give the elevator a bit of extra attention -- its vintage charm, complete with brass poles and a slow, nostalgic glide, is part of the hotel's appeal, but a thorough cleaning and polish would truly let its character shine Highly, highly recommend. If I could give this place less than 1 star, I would. Booked this place in September for a stay this weekend and when I arrived there they tell me they don't have reservations for me. When I show them my receipt with reservation number they proceed to tell me that they overbooked and don't have rooms available due to renovations being conducted where my room was supposed to be. Once again, I booked this place in September and was never notified about a cancellation and was never refunded. They sent me to a holiday inn express like 2 miles away; thank God I paid for the rooms upfront front because it forced them to have Holiday Inn bill them directly. The couple ahead of us who they did the exact same thing to was told that since they elected to pay at the hotel that their card would just not be charged and they could just pay the holiday inn out of pocket instead; problem is when we all booked our rooms a month in advanced the price for 2 nights was about $400...the holiday inn express day of charges for 2 nights...about $700...I will never try to stay at this hotel ever again. read more

This weekend was our third stay at Carlton and each time was just as good. An older hotel, built in the 1920s this hotel has a lot of charm. The wooden warmth of the lobby greets you as a guest and if you wish you can walk up the wide staircase to your room or take the elevator. When you arrive you will find open rooms with wood furniture throughout the room and not the cheap furniture of newer hotels. The bathroom had pocket doors instead of doors that open, marble flooring and a huge jacuzzi tub and separate huge shower. Due to covid we only saw one employee when we checked in who was very nice. I would definitely recommend the Carlton for its unique charm and also location. read more

While still working on updating and rejuvenating The Carlton, I would stay there again. Rooms are big, refrigerators in the room help given the Central Coast wine country surrounds you! Bed mattress was a little soft for my liking and the bathroom faucet was loose. Shower was great, as was the jacuzzi tub for two. Loved how they've preserved the woodwork and staircase off main lobby. The atrium courtyard is big, and will be great place for a glass of wine or cocktail, if and when The Carlton adds the contemplated Tapas and Wine Bar where hotel restaurant used to be. Pricing was extremely reasonable and only two short blocks to main square. And across the street from my favorite new tasting room, Marin's! Check both of them out. read more

Definitely not worth $385.00 per night. They over charge greatly and take advantage of people going to graduation at Cal Poly. Shower molding needs attention (bleach) Drapes need to be hung properly to close ALL the way across. Will we ever frequent this establishment again. Just my opinion. read more

Beautiful, old hotel that has seen better days. Stayed here early April and had a few problems. One: the room was tired, worn and needed TLC. The mattress was broken, the carpets were stained, the TV only had the most basic of channels, and the shower and bath were something else. It was raining heavily the night we stayed here and the run-off water pushed up into the bathtub, filling it up with dirty water. This probably means there is terrible drainage in the building. The shower floor had a screw that was not flush with the floor and I was nervous we'd cut our feet. The bottled water was not free. I let the Front Desk know about the bathtub and they just shrugged their shoulders. Not great help. Two: The restaurant/ bar was closed and things to purchase in the lobby was expensive. I was afraid that a bottle of wine would be too expensive and not taste great. I'd avoid this place until they have refurbished the hotel. read more

We took an impromptu overnight trip to the central coast and wine country. Walked in and booked a room for same price as listed online at the Carlton Hotel. They were dog friendly so that was awesome. We liked the vintage building. Some brass areas could use some polishing but the rooms and hotel were very clean. The location was perfect. Within walking distance to many restaurants wine tastings and stores. The overall price and dog fee was reasonable. I'd consider coming back in the future. read more

During my birthday weekend, we ventured off down south on a road trip to Atascadero. So we booked a king suite with a jetted spa tub to celebrate! The hotel has a luxurious vibe and takes you back in time. We booked this through booking.com but the reception desk asked us to book through hotels directly since booking.com and all other middle men sites get 25% from the reservations. Though I wonder why they are even on those sites if they want the extra percentage. I guess they don't advertise much. But without booking.com or Expedia exposure, would they have customers calling to book a room or even know they exist? With all the mediocre reviews, I wasn't expecting much. But note when the reviews were written. The older reviews were before they renovated. The newer reviews show the hotel has improved. In any case, we had a nice weekend getaway. A/C worked well especially when it was 95! Shower had full pressure, so it wasn't difficult to rinse off quickly. Jetted tub was good and worked fine. The bed was comfortable with a down comforter and pillows. This hotel was at the heart of it all! Close to freeway entrances and just a few miles from Morro Bay, Templeton, San Luis Obispo, Cambria, etc. And when it was scorching outside, we drove toward the shore for the ocean breeze which made it bearable. Even went through a Farmer's Market on Saturday that started later in the afternoon in Morro Bay. The cruising event was cool. Lotsa cars from the past all along El Camino. Food trucks were in the park with music performances till 10 pm. It was great to see people dancing and enjoying themselves! I'll look back with fond memories of Atascadero! read more

If you're into historic hotels, this one is the one to stay in Atascadero! It has two restaurants attached to it, walking distance to a lot of businesses and the room is a great size! I like how they have a wine opener in the room already. The tub in our room was surprisingly big as well! Parking is free and they have a private lot for you to park so you don't have to drive in circles looking for a parking spot. The walls must be really thick because I didn't hear a peep while I was sleeping. They have an elevator but taking the stairs is faster if you're just staying on the second floor. read more

This is my second stay at The Carlton. Several times a year I drive from Santa Barbara to the Bay Area and break up the trip overnight mid-way. In years past, I've stayed in Paso Robles, but decided to try The Carlton last Christmas. There are so many positive things to say: Of course, the affordability. In Santa Barbara a room like 206 would be $500 - 800! The room is perfect with a desk, sitting area, table and chairs, coffee maker, ice maker nearby, glasses, wine glasses (even a wine opener). The bed is so comfortable and the pillows made me realize I need new pillows for my home. The location is perfect, a quick walk to Barley and Boar which was recommended to me at my last visit and so delicious I went back last evening. I love the counter where you can dine and watch the kitchen crew in action. AND they remembered me from my last visit. The new wine bar is a great addition, I enjoyed a glass of wine when I got back from dinner and the two women working there were so welcoming. Two things went wrong: when I returned from dinner my room key didn't work, however, the receptionist was so kind, made a new key and came up with me to make sure it worked, which it did. I found out later, that this is a common problem with hotels, not unique to the Carlton. Then the TV remote quit working and again she brought up new batteries and it worked. But then it stopped working again and she brought a replacement remote which worked. I never felt like she was put out to have to come up here three times. Such minor details... but I want you to know how much I appreciated the attention to fixing them. I look forward to returning and am recommending The Carlton to friends in Santa Barbara as a great getaway place to enjoy wine tasting in Paso Robles and then come back here for a very quiet hotel. read more

My husband surprised me with an overnight stay at the Carlton. We were going to a Grenache wine festival up in Paso and didn't want to have to drive too far. It's a beautiful hotel, the quality of everything was fantastic even though a little dated. Our room was huge, you had a refrigerator nice size closet and bathroom with a tub and shower. I wouldn't try the tub it's too deep and would be hard to get in and out of. Unfortunately the restaurant is not open at the moment but the back porch for a light breakfast is. The place is up for sale as the owners are retiring. Staff was friendly, and parking is in the lot across the street. read more

Very rude front desk. Would not recommend. I wanted to check out the hotel with some friends and was told to leave, and we agreed and left. Next thing I know I'm outside and a woman comes out screaming for my friends and I to come back onto the property because she claimed we didn't leave. Long story short, the cops supposedly got called on us to which we wanted to stay and talk to the police but we were once again yelled at to leave. Very poorly run and honestly the decorations aren't visually appealing either. Id have a better time at motel 6. read more

I was looking for a place to stay on one of the discount hotel apps. This one popped up and I decided to take a chance on a non-name brand. Loved the ambiance. The room was very clean and spacious. The adjoining bar and restaurant are very elegant in their throwback decor. There are several very good restaurants and bars within walking distance if one chooses to venture out into the downtown area. Will stay again if I am in the neighborhood. read more

I truly enjoyed the look of this hotel. It had a classy, luxurious feel. Service upon check-in was decent. Not great, but not bad. Our room was clean and spacious and we had a beautiful view to boot! While things shut down pretty early here, and there isn't much to do, there is a local bar and a few places to eat which are conveniently located nearby. This is definitely a place I'd consider staying at again. The only reason I've rated it 3 stars is because our room could have been a bit more comfortable temperature wise. The AC did not work, and turned out there were other rooms with the same issue. My partner and I had to sleep with the windows opened during our stay, which we felt was not very safe to do. The next day, a few of us mentioned it to a woman at the front lobby, and she simply said, "Ohhh...sorry about that". In my book, that is poor customer service and horrible for business. One woman had actually experienced heat exhaustion during a county fair and had returned to her hotel room hoping to cool down under the AC, but her room's AC did not work. As someone who is extremely sensitive to hot weather and had to spend the evening without AC, I felt terrible for her. Hoping The Carlton reaches out to those of us who suffered in hot rooms during our stay here. read more

Beautiful hotel inside. I am a huge fan of staying in historical hotels so have been eyeing this place in Atascadero for a while. Pet friendly, but I had to call to make the reservation and apparently there is a service charge to make telephone reservations. Very convenient to pull up and unload your belongings with a luggage cart. Our room was huge and mostly quiet. The bathroom is gorgeous and looks like it's recently been remodeled. It had a tub and a walk in shower with a separate enclosed toilet. The bathroom reminded me of one from an upscale Vegas resort. Tons of restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and bars nearby. Tesla charger is a quick walk from the hotel. The town's city hall is beautiful and only a block away. My only real complaint was that I did not find the desk staff to be very friendly. Both upon arrival and departure. When we arrived, no one looked up from their computer screens, even though we were the only ones there. It took a minute or so to get any kind of greeting or acknowledgement. Also, our room was almost $300 a night, which seemed a little high. I'd stay at the Carlton again but hold out for a better price. read more

This is such a beautiful boutique hotel in the middle of Atascadero. We found this hotel on the fly when our original hotel had power outage. I love how it was decked out in December for Christmas. We came right after, but it felt like the spirit of Christmas was very much alive. I loved the lobby that really preserved the history of the hotel. It had a nice fireplace and they made it look like a library. Our room was gorgeous! It was spacious with wooden cabinets. It was clean and felt modern and renovated while feeling somewhat historic. It was pricey to stay for one night, but we really enjoyed it. The staircase that led up to the rooms was also beautiful. I thought the receptionists were nice. They honored the upgrade on the room with the Yelp checkin. So we ended up in a patio room that just made our room extra special. I do want to come back to this hotel again. read more

The ribeye steak was delicious. There is a bakery that serves wonderful pastries and is connected to hotel's lobby. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was immaculate.
