We enjoyed exploring the grounds. All the animals are very gentle. Wanted to see the cows, but couldn't find them. Detracting half a star to the overall review for: confusion on check-in & overnight dog barking. Upon arrival, We walked in with another couple, and there wasn't anyone to greet us for about 5 to 10 minutes. The other couple texted, called without connection. There were no instructions on checking in either. So we were just confused together for a while until our host appeared. In addition, a dog was barking intermittently the whole night, for both nights that we stayed. So that detracted a little but overall a good experience and would recommend.

And adults only was also a plus! The rooms have no phones or clocks inside which is odd but I guess I didn't really miss them. I only heard the freeway noise slightly so that was also a pleasant surprise. I did take a star off for the paper products in the room, the toilet paper and the tissue. They were only 1 ply and not soft at all and I feel they should be nicer. But overall what a gem of a motel.

Plot Twist: I am the Good Looking Not Quite the Silver Fox Richard Gere of this story. =) ----So let's break down Paso & The Ava Hotel---- For my wife's Birthday Weekend, we made reservations at... The Ava Hotel Paso Robles. Mind you, we left mid-day from our home and by the time we arrived to Paso and pulled into the Hotel parking lot, it was already dark, but right away I could tell that the Hotel my wife booked us was Top Notch. First Impression: Sheesh, my wife sure knows how to spoil herself for HER Birthday weekend. Haha. Once parked, I had my wife and 3 girls head into the lobby out of the cold while I lugged what felt like 12 suitcases... We were only there for three nights; do you really need a suit case just for your change of shoes?? Gotta love Girls... Plot twist: The suitcase with the extra shoes.... WAS MINE!!!!!! Jk, maybe, not really, I'll never tell... =) Upon checking in, I immediately noticed how Great the staff was; Kind, Welcoming and from the looks of the place, even at night, I just knew we were going to enjoy our weekend stay here. ----The Room---- Everything you'd expect, but More! We had 2 comfy Queens, a large screen TV, a mini fridge, a clean bathroom and a Great standalone shower! Being that this hotel is Brand New, everything was clean and felt nearly unused which really made for an enjoyable stay. The next morning, my wife's actual Birthday, we got dressed, headed downstairs and celebrated with a Birthday Mimosa from their Lobby Bar. It was the perfect start to our day and to my wife's Special Day From there we headed out to explore Downtown Paso Robles which BTW, The Ava Hotel is what I would call the start of the Downtown area so it's literally the PERFECT place to stay if you, yourself come to Paso Robles one day. And to those still with us, Remember earlier when I said I made a "Big Mistake. Big. Huge!" By simply thinking that Paso Robles was some Podunk, no-nothin town that wasn't worth exiting the freeway for?? Well, I'll be the 1st to admit. I was wrong!!! Paso is one of my new favorite Central Coast towns that I can't wait to come back to. The fun little shops, the great eateries, Wine, more Wine, Did I mention there's Wine? Yeah, loads and loads of world-renowned wineries specializing in French Reds, but they've got whites too so don't stress. Not a wine person? More of a beer drinker? Paso's Got You!! Come check out Firestone Walker Brewing Co., home of the "805" beer; the regions Phone Area Code. Yeah, drink local baby!! So after enjoying breakfast at the Cowgirl Cafe (Epic Review coming soon), we went to the downtown park at let our kids play with the locals. We then hit several of the eclectic shops, including a local bookstore where my wife was like a kid in a candy store and The Spice of Life Tea Shop which I fell in love with (reviews of everywhere we went NEXT, so stay tuned) and finally made our way back to The Ava to take a break and rest our pups (our feet). Upon walking back to The Ava Hotel, I couldn't help but be in Awe of this well manicured, architecturally forward, beautifully designed building. To be honest, It looks and it feels more like a Resort and I felt so spoiled to be apart of its beginning days and I'm proud to give it the 5 stars it deserves. So... What have we learned?? Step 1: Book a room at the Ava Hotel. Step 2: Put your wife's name on the luggage tag of your suitcase for the extra shoes you really brought. The beds were very comfortable and so were the pillows. Plenty of space to place luggages with the closet and counter space. The tv unfortunately would not cast with our devices which was unfortunate so we had to stick with cable tv which honestly was whatever because we ended up falling asleep right away anyway but for other guests this might be a problem so hopefully the staff can address this issue. The service was great. Check in and check out was a breeze. They were very informative and helpful with answering our questions and directing us where the rooms, pool, gym and restaurant are and the times they are available. If ever in the area, I would definitely book here again.

It was super close to Highway 101. The property is under the Choice Hotels brand with 132 rooms stretching across 3 floors. They do not offer daily room cleaning, it's offered on the 3rd day. But this non daily room cleaning is the new standard for most all hotels due to the staffing shortages. However if you request a room cleaning, they will oblige. I had no complaints about the room. Luved the styling and decor. I didn't hear our neighbors, not sure if we had any or if it was that sound proof. The AC was working perfectly. Lots of charging ports. Ample lighting. Desk and side chair with the two beds. Mini fridge. TV. Safe box. Coffee maker with pods, tea bags, cups, sugar and creamer. Armoire. Dresser. Shower water temps and pressure was great. They use Pur soap brand soap, shampoo and conditioner. Pur is known as a crafted soap using minimal plant based ingredients tending to be hypoallergenic. It was a nice feel to the skin with little to no scent. Amenities: Outdoor heated swimming pool. Outdoor lawn- big enough to host events and no dogs allowed on the lawn. Fire pits in various sizes. 12 EV charging stations- free to use by hotel guests. Fitness center. State of the art meeting room/banquet room. In house restaurant and bar in the lobby which is open to the public.

Beautiful Hotel, but Not a Five-Star Experience…read more We have always loved the charm, location, and intimate atmosphere of Hotel Cheval, which is why we not only chose to stay here but also recommended it to friends. Unfortunately, the price point suggests a true five-star experience, while the condition and maintenance of the hotel simply do not. During our stay, we experienced plumbing issues as well as problems with roof leaks. More concerning is that friends we recommended the hotel to also experienced plumbing problems during their stay. Their solution? They were handed a plunger. At a hotel charging luxury rates, that is simply not an acceptable response to a guest experiencing a plumbing problem. Hotel Cheval has so much going for it--the location is wonderful, the property is charming, and we genuinely wanted to continue loving it. But luxury is more than atmosphere and a premium room rate. It also means excellent maintenance, attention to detail, and service that resolves problems without making them the guest's responsibility. At this price point, the infrastructure and level of service need to match the promise. Right now, they don't. I hope management invests in the property because Hotel Cheval could absolutely live up to the experience its pricing suggests.

Granted it was off-season but we also had no issues with parking right up front which was also convenient. The room itself was a very nice room. Upon walking in, we noticed a dry bar along with a large wine fridge which was great because we brought some wine with us and had planned on purchasing wine on our trip as well. The bedroom had large ceilings, a nice chandelier and a large shower and bathroom which was divided with a barn door style sliding door. The French doors faced into the interior courtyard and I imagine would offer great airflow into the room had it been a warmer time of year. Just down the hall from our room was a bottle filling station which I really appreciate as someone who drinks a ton of water. The hotel overall was beautifully decorated, well maintained and had a very warm feel to it. We walked into the lobby and felt right at home. While most everything was great during our stay at the hotel, there were a few things that caught my attention that I feel could've been non-issues. First, the little vanity mirror in our bathroom was very loose and couldn't be positioned because it was just hanging loose on the arm. My wife was able to support it with a hair tie and make it work, but still a small fix that housekeeping or maintenance should've addressed. Second is that there only seems to be one luggage cart for guests to use. When we were packing up to leave, it was nowhere to be seen and after waiting fifteen minutes or so we just carried our stuff to my truck in multiple trips. Lastly, the check-in process left quite a bit to be desired. The person checking us in showed very little interest in assisting us. She didn't offer to go over any of the amenities or hotel events going on nor did she refer us to the business card size reference card in our key envelope with a QR code and WiFi password. I can appreciate that people have off days, but working hospitality at a hotel that isn't cheap to stay in I would have expected a little more than just requesting payment and handing us our keys. One last thing to note is that the hotel charges the full amount of your stay upon check-in. All things considered, if I found myself in Paso Robles again, I would have no reservations about staying at The Piccolo again.

That said, for a hotel of this caliber, you'd expect at least complimentary coffee--but there wasn't any. They do have a restaurant that opens at 7:00 AM, but when I arrived right at 7:00, it wasn't open. An employee mentioned the staff was running late--it was already 7:10 AM by then. Not a great look. I've stayed at the Courthouse Marriott before, where they offer free coffee and breakfast, and in hindsight, I wish I had stayed there again. Unfortunately, I don't see myself returning here.
