We requested to move out because we were buying a house in another location. One of the building managers told us we can update her on the moveout date when it comes closer to closing. On the day we went to update our moveout date. We were told that someone else was moving in and that the lady who told us we could extend our stay was no longer working there; as a result the manager told us we could find a hotel or an Airbnb to stay at... We were left with nowhere to stay for over two months. They never honored their building managers word. read more

UNSAFE FOR RESIDENTS AND FAMILIES DO NOT LIVE HERE Although parking garages are fob-entry, criminals are constantly able to access the garages resulting in theft including motorcycle theft, tire theft, car breaks ins, and vandalism. $100 is the minimum amount you will pay to park in the garage without an assigned spot, but I'd also count on buying new tires at least every year. There are no cameras in the garages. There is little the police can do and management does nothing. The fire alarms go off several times a week, often in the middle of the night. It's at the point where the fire department considers our alarms a non-emergency and can take 30 minutes to an hour to respond. Management has never commented on the status and plan for fixing the fire alarm system. read more

DO NOT MOVE HERE. Pros: Location that's about it. Everything is cheaply made. When I moved in there was a lot of things broken. That they came to fix that broke again after three months. The dryer and washer burnt out after the second month. The tube faucet unglued again. The ice maker made a huge block of ice and I had to disconnect the fridge. The dishwasher stinks up the sink in the kitchen and drains the water up. If your MILITARY read your lease if you go on deployment or are in orders for more than 2 weeks and you want a family member to stay and take care of your house they expect you to put them on the lease lol. The GYM IS A JOKE. There is weights missing and broken equipment that has not been replaced in the 6 months I lived here. Don't get me started on the staff who feel entitled and almost have an issue with you asking questions. Only one person there has helped me. Every time I see someone waking around the complex they always say their rude and I always tell them go rent somewhere else. Also they let towing company's enter the parking lot you pay for $70 a month and tow your car if your sticker isn't visible or it fell off. I'm not sure why they would let the towing truck in if you when you pay you get a scanner and only you can go in meaning you paid lol. read more

Is it cheaper than most apartments in the area, yes. That may be changing as they will now charge you for the lights in the community.. so their electric bill, and a few for the "technology package" which is really just the code system on your apartment door. Which is really nice cause the batteries on it die at least once a month, and if they go completely dead you can't get into the apartment. You can always replace the batteries yourself, but that adds up. Constant trash all over and 1 sweet cleaning lady who is responsible for everything. Tons of piles of dog poop, even on the sidewalks that just stays there till its washed away. Apartment claims to be nonsmoking but people just step out their back door and smoke especially if they live on the back lot near the jail. Not hard to figure it out, because they leave a nice pile of cigarette butts outside their apartment. or they tie their dog up and just let it poop away. No one will bother them cause the people in the office could careless. You may notice all the fob stations on the doors, yeah most of them don't work so feel free to come walk around and tour the property... aka steal and destroy things. Lived here for a few years and it's just gotten so bad. We apparently have a new property manager; we wouldn't know for sure because no statement or introduction was made. Old Town Alexandria is not the cheapest place to live; luckily, I found Carlyle Mills apartments when I first arrived in this area during the start of COVID-19 back in Jun 2020. The maintenance staff answered issues I had with my apartments within a couple of days, if not the same day. The front desk and other staff met my expectations. Great value for your money, close to the freeway, minutes from the Eisenhower metro station, and a nice walk down to the Potomac River. read more

Rented here for three years and had issues the entire time. The buildings and apartments are run down especially stairs to the units. The plumbing is so bad when other do their laundry or dishes from other floors we would get the water in our kitchen sink(which often stank). We had two water floods during our time here and they did damage to our furniture and the carpet and then when we moved out they charged us for the carpet. She was so thorough and really made us feel like we were meant to make Carlyle Mill Apartments our home. I FINALLY moved out! I lived in the complex for quite a few years, but it seriously went down hill quickly. For the amount of rent, plus the nickel & diming that they require, they have never tended to the stairwells, nor hallways for keeping them updated/fixed. They never come and clean the outside windows of your apartment (which need to be done professionally due to the location of the windows). The exterior is all rotted. The trash is absurd. They have one bin for 4 levels of apartments worth of trash for 2 units (so that's 8 levels of apartments technically). This means that the trash chutes get filled up quickly, leaving on a minimum, at least 10-12 bags of trash sitting by the trash chutes daily. The security door to the garage is a joke. Being that this complex is directly next to the Alexandria jail, you'd think that they would be a little more cautious, but nope! The garage door is broken at least once a month! And for a few days. SO, if you're fresh out of jail and walking over to the metro (as I have witnessed), feel free to COME ON IN and check out a few cars!!! Also, I hope that you enjoy the smell of pot because you'll smell it constantly, even INSIDE of your apartment. I have noticed a decline in the tenants the let rent the place, wondering if this has turned into a government assisted living location, which explains the influx of less than professional folks moving in lately. This was my main reason for getting out. The ladies in the front office are nice...but the apartment complex itself is definitely deteriorating and no one seems to care. It's totally NOT worth your money. IF you are an actual grown up who cares, do yourself a favor and go to any of the other locations in the area which cost the same and are much nicer. read more

Let me share a story with you about where not to rent in the area: any property managed by Equity. I could talk ad nauseam about why they are the worst, but the most recent example involved being stuck in an exterior elevator for the second time this week, while no one could reach the apartment maintenance folks or the elevator maintenance company. Long story short--we ended up calling the nonemergency number and the fire department was able to let us out. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. Update: It's 1:30 am and yet again, the fire alarm is going off for no fire related reason. Definitely live here if you want to spend multiple hot DC nights sitting in the parking lot waiting for the fire department 3 hours before you have to be at work. read more

This place lures you in with a lower price but all of the added fees for trash and water add on almost $200/month. The hallways smell like mildew or pot, and it has the vibe of a cheap motel with dirty carpets. I had pieces of my bike stolen a year ago, and I was told the corporate office was going to do something to help secure bikes. They did not, and someone just cut my lock and stole my brand new bike from within the parking garage. The security cameras are not placed anywhere that the thief could be identified. I also have windows that 1) are nearly impossible to open and 2) are so poorly insulated that they bleed out A/C and my money. My electric bill during the summer months is around $260 dollars/month. The staff is friendly, but this is no place you want to call home. There are much nicer places in this neighborhood, and I chose poorly. read more

I'm so sorry for anyone who read my review, and moved here just to find issues. After living here for almost a year, I have found more than enough issues. For those who don't want to read all of this, TLDR: this place sucks! Also, read EVERYTHING in your lease. You sign off on allowing them to enter your apartment at any point for maintenance or other services WITHOUT 24 hour notice. READ READ READ!!!!! 1) the leasing agent will NEVER help you with your concern. They will find every possible way to go around your concerns. A few of the other tenets that I have become very close friends with, have come to the conclusion of several things. 2) They are inconsistent. From what a few of us realized, each of us were told each different responses and experiences. From being lied to regarding things included with the unit (like a fireplace), from "future amenities", to charging extra for rent! During covid, one of the tenets told me how they tried to RAISE their rent DUE TO COVID!!! And for me? My household actually GOT covid, and alerted them about it, and when we were struggling to pay the rent because of being out of work, they really sent me over an eviction notice that if I did not pay the rent for the month by the 14th, we would be evicted. Which I would love to add, IS AGAINST THE LAW!!! We have NEVER been late on ANY of the rent payments since moving here, but we are getting an eviction notice for being late once??? Do not believe them if they say they are adding a "gated dog park". Apparently that's been on the "we are doing this" list for AGES!!! 3) Parking is impossible, unless you pay for the private parking. Everyone fights over parking spots. I've had to park 2 stories above my floor because of all the filled spots. 4) Their staff is underqualified and understaffed. This one is actually pretty hilarious. I will have to break this one down a bit further! - Everyone I have talked to regarding the units, has had some sort of issue. It actually started with a bunch of us walking our dogs, and other tenets overhearing our issues with the units, to a CROWD OF US having the same issues! Washer/Dryers breaking/not working, dishwasher breaking down after a few washes, having NAILS POPING OUT OF THE CARPET, leakage in most of the units, and cracks in the walls that continue to wear and tear over time, which I'm pretty sure, they're gonna blame the tenet, and take it out of your security deposit. So if you do decide to move here, I highly advise you to record everything regarding the unit, and get EVERY. LITTLE. DETAIL. - I had called maintenance to fix my carpets because my cat had tore it up (which I agree, is my fault, but I did pay a pet deposit!), and the continuous nail issue that I mentioned on my sheet with damage prior to moving in. The maintenance man had no idea what he was doing. He ripped off my entire carpet for the hall, just to hammer in the nails that were popping out of the ground. I told him to fix the carpet he just ripped off the ground (which was not a little!) just to be told "I'm not qualified for this. You're gonna have to call and pay for your own carpenter". Had I known this was going to happen, I would have skipped the whole maintenance staff, and hired a professional to fix it!!!!! - They have 1 cleaning lady. For ALL 4 buildings. Let me repeat myself, THEY HAVE ONE CLEANING LADY FOR 4 BUILDINGS. Each building is 4 stories tall, with several units on each floor. None of the floors actually get cleaned. The walls, lights, garage, halls, are incredibly disgusting. - With so many tenets, you would imagine they would be smart enough to have more than 2 trash bins for 2 buildings. But nope, each pair of the buildings has exactly 2 trash bins, and 2 recycling bins. Which overflow within days. And when it's trash day? Well, I hope you don't mind taking out other people's trash, or having a disgustingly dirty/smelly parking garage!! Because boy, the trash shoots just get closed off, and all you see is trash filling up the trash shoots, and trash being left on the side of each trash shoot. recycling bin gets overflowed, and boxes are just left on the floor. (remember that cleaning lady I mentioned? Well, she's also the ONLY one in charge of cleaning out the trash shoot "room". Great right???) - The maintenance will not fix or work on anything outside of residential issues. This one is a bit difficult to explain... so... Here's my experience! I live on the 2nd floor. So, as you can imagine, I take the stairs to go up and down to walk my dog, bring in packages, all that good stuff. Well, amazingly enough, all of the stair cases have issues from breakage, rusting, and metal sticking up! Isn't that wonderful? I actually tripped on the metal several times, and one of those times, I fell hard enough to hurt my knee! And can you imagine, they FINALLY fixed the stairs after complaints to BBB!!! read more

Felt I had to leave a review after reading what other tenants had to 'say'. I have been here two years, renewing the lease for a third year. I have genuinely enjoyed living here the whole time I have been here. While living here the office staff has changed hands a bit, but the current staff is AMAZING (Jessica and Tiana, but Jasmine was a gem also) I can reach the staff whenever I need too. If they aren't picking up the phone, chances are they are sorting packages (which can be picked up 24/7) I'll swing by the office and chat with them in person. I have always been greeted warmly, and are always happy to chat about any issues. I have had a few things go awry in the apartment, but the maintenance staff always is on top of it. I had to have my dishwasher looked at a few times, but they came to a permanent solution. When I submit an issue, they're here the next day, some times even the same day. Yet again, both of the repair staff are very polite and pleasant to work with. As for the grounds, they are always kept as clean as possible. Sometimes the trash can over flow, but some tenants don't know how to sort out their recycling properly. There is someone who goes around everyday picking up trash, changing trash, etc. Sometimes there is dog waste, but that is the responsibility of the dog owner to clean up! You'll always have rude tenants that may cause issues, but I assure you contact the staff and they will find a solution. read more

RENTER BEWARE. You think its a good bang for your buck until you actually live here. This place held together with bandaids and duct tape. Below are some come topics with grades. Two years plus living here. Final straws to break this camels back were two unfulfilled service requests that were marked completed as myself and pregnant wife continue to sleep in Alexandria summer with no AC and a year long leaking toilet. Customer Service (C+): This place was run much better when Josh, Cody, and Kelsey were here. Tiana and Jasmine are good but they are new so there is still some time to see if they live up to the previous staffs level; however, the other leasing staff is subpar. Seems as if they don't want to be here. If you have a question, complaint, or package pickup some staff questions whether you actually have a package and often are too involved in their cell phones to acknowledge your presence. Maintenance (D): The general exterior maintenance is a C. They get poor contractors that often do half ass jobs. The grass is undercut or not cut in certain sections. When there is snow, only certain sections of the sidewalks are cleared. The garbage situation is horrendous, and is often overflowing which leaves putrid stench throughout both garages. The garbage often overflows into the actual driving path through the parking garage. Residents leave garbage (often leaky) outside their doors all the time and large garbage is left around the complex for months before it is moved to the "garbage dump"/visitor parking area. That's right, random garbage furniture that is left around the complex is stored in the visitor parking area (just how you want to impress Mom and Dad with your first apartment or that new girlfriend or boyfriend you are trying to impress). Maintenance requests are often "Completed" on time, meaning they are attended to and marked as completed despite the fact that they were not completed or touched at all. We have now been without AC in our bedroom for months. Nothing beats a steamy DC night like no AC!!! Our rugs in both apartments were installed extremely poorly. I had to do work myself in both instances to ensure the carpets and molding were affixed so that my wife, friends, family or self didn't trip or get a nail through the foot. No surface is level or straight (fridge, doors, windows, stove, etc). Windows that barely open, if they open at all. Screen doors that won't slide closed. This section could really go on and on... Amenities (C, but on the decline): Secure living, sometimes. The gates are often broken and garbage doors (oops I mean garage doors, not) are also often broken (maybe that's why there was recently several bikes stolen). I have seen certain gates left broken for months before being repaired. This is all very comforting given the prison next door and the multiple reported break-ins and thefts. The garage roof used to be great (tennis court, basketball court, and grills). Unfortunately the apartment management didn't think to make sure the grills were compliant with code, so the fire Marshall has had those moved. The grills have been removed from the roof and put into mosquito infested courtyards within feet of your neighbors living room window. Pool is ok, nothing special. Typical pool rules for the area: open at noon and close at 8, Memorial Day to Labor Day. Gym is subpar and as I mention below poor construction and materials have led to multiple complaints by adjacent neighbors. Sorry if you hear weights dropping at 3pm on a Thursday, you chose to move into the apartment next to the gym!!! That didn't stop management from relocating all the gym equipment into a very poor layout. Noise (C-): We've experienced living in two apartments at the CM. In the first apartment it sounded as if our upstairs neighbors (two separate neighbors) were going to come crashing through the ceiling at any moment. The materials used to build this complex are subpar and the floors were obviously made with those materials. We spoke with our neighbor and knew it was not the first or second tenants fault but that it was the flooring. We chose to move to the top floor to avoid this issue. We can now here through our walls, it is what it is. Poor materials, cheap work... don't expect much more from a commuter hostel. Location (B+): You will be located within steps to the Eisenhower Metro. A mile walk to King St. On the exit and entrance ramp to I-95. There are several good restaurants and bars in the area. Costs (B): Decently priced. No surprise fees. Annual increases are a little steep but not out of the ordinary. Overall if you are on a budget and want to stay within the loop you will manage here. Do not expect much more. You get what you pay for. read more

Like the other lower reviews : overflowing garbage, nothing ever gets truly fixed, fire alarms going off for no reason. Staff is nice until there's an issue, and then they ignore you. These apartments are "cheap" for the area, but expensive for what they actually give you. I filed a Freedom of Information Act request and found out that alarm issues have been going back to 2017, and that there have been a few elevator issues too in which residents get locked in the elevator and the FD needs to come to get them out. Not the fault of the apartment, but there's also a bog right next door and it stinks to high heaven. Lots of bugs. And because the entrance to the apartment is on an exit to the freeway, good luck getting to your building in any reasonable time. I've spent between 15-20 minutes waiting across the street for traffic to move. I've seen snakes and cockroaches in the parking complex, and again, it's VA and that happens but I can't help but think there'd be less pests if there was less overflowing garbage. I wanted to love this place but it just keeps getting worse and worse :( I sadly wouldn't recommend living here even if they did make the staff changes. The location is just not good. read more

From the leasing staff who appears friendly but it is next to impossible to contact them (expect about a week response time), to faulty appliances (no HVAC for 2 months, broken hot water heater, a washing machine that caught on fire, dryer that almost fell on me) and much much more - I was lucky to get out when I did. They don't warn you about the terrible insulation, not to mention you are next to 495 and the walls are paper-thin. Also, don't bother cleaning your apartment before you leave because they will charge you an arm and leg for cleaning fees for a spec of dirt or an indentation from a piece of furniture. If you do choose to rent here, know you will spend $100+/month in trash removal, water costs, and sewage because it is a community-wide usage fee and varies each month. read more

I moved in about a month ago and I have to say I love love love living here. It's close enough to Old Town, the metro, movie theater, and the best part is that I can walk to work. The apartments are clean and spacious. I love that the halls are open to the outdoors (only residents have access). It was one of the many things that attracted me about living here as well as being a pet friendly community. I like how it's not just one big complex of apartments, but several buildings. The guest parking is FREE, which is unheard of for this area. Everywhere I looked in this area charges at least $5/day for visitor parking pass. Another favorite is the food trucks that are out front 2-3 times per week. The food is delicious and the cost is cheap, which means I don't have to cook dinner those days. There are parking garages for residents and guests, but only residents have access to upper level. There is access to the parking garages on each floor of each building so there isn't any fighting over a particular spots on a certain floor. Everyone who works here is super friendly and always says hello! Faren and Jada always brighten up my day when I see them! Faren was the one who helped me moved in and made sure everything went smoothly on my move-in day. I love that they keep everyone up-to-date about events going on (recently it has been the Halloween Door Decorating Contest). They always make sure that I have everything taken care of and ask if there is anything I don't like or need fixing. As for the bad reviews. Since living here I haven't had any fire alarm issues or elevator issues. And the leasing team always emails if they do work on those things. For the fire alarm they only work on them on week days, 9 am - 5 pm, and that's only happened once because it was mandatory maintenance. As far as I know the trash truck comes every day, if not, every other day. There are trash chutes on every floor of the garages. My old apartment we would leave trash outside our door and was always a mess and smelled awful. Here is so much better with the trash chutes. Its away from residents. Another review mentions cars getting towed. The easiest way to avoid this is to not park in a spot that is reserved. These spots a marked and have a sign. The apartment complex is next to the jail, but it's completely fenced with barbed wire and there are police officers everywhere. read more

My husband and I lived at Carlyle Mill apartments in Alexandria for a year and just moved out on February 14th. Now that we've received our check refunding our security deposit, I feel like I can post a review. The community has a pool, small fitness center, business center with two computers and a printer, "pub" (TVs, pool table, darts, foozball)and a rooftop tennis court. It is located on the Yellow Line, so getting a seat in the morning is never a problem. Ride time to L'Enfant Plaza was under 20 minutes so it's a not a long or bad commute to the city. Pros: 1) Proximity to Metro - the Eisenhower Ave Metro Station is a 5-6 minute walk from the complex to the station. It's a straight walk because you can cut across a small field and the overflow parking lot for the Hoffman Center. 2) Quiet - not only is the complex quiet, but the area around the complex is quiet at night. It's in a mostly corporate area (Patent and Trademark Office is right down the street), so there is no traffic noise at night. The street's are well lit so walking back from Metro at night (even alone) is not a problem. 3) Proximity to 495 - it literally took us 30 seconds to get on 495 east. One left turn out of the complex and a few seconds later and you are on the freeway. There is an exit off 495 west for Eisenhower Avenue that feeds you directly on Mill Road. Again 30 seconds and you are home. (Note: this part of 495 is the "thru" section so you can't use it to access National Harbor or other certain "local" exits. For that you would either need to go to Telegraph Road or Route 1. 4) It is walking distance to Old Town. We walked to Old Town many times and it took about 15 minutes. Cab rides home from OT are only a few dollars. You have the benefits of Old Town without the traffic. 5) Nice, big bathrooms. We had a two bedroom, two bath apartment and the bathrooms were huge. Two people in the bathroom at the same time getting ready was never a problem. 6) Open floor plans. Both two bedroom/two bathroom floor plans are open. You can be in the kitchen and talk to people in other rooms. Also it works nice when people come over. 7) Friendly staff - everyone who works for the complex that we encountered in the year we lived there was extremely friendly. The property manager Wanda is a sweetheart. 8) Garage parking - parking for residents is in an enclosed parking garage. No need to scape snow or ice off your car in the winter. We also never had problems finding parking spots on the first or second level. 9) Lots of green space for dogs. It's a very pet friendly community, so lots of residents have dogs. Also there is a dog park about a 5-6 minute walk from the complex. 10) Fast renewal of security deposit. Not only did we get most of our $250 deposit back (some was withheld to pay for two weeks of water/sewer/trash), but we got it back within 13 days of moving out. Cons: 1) Too many kids at the pool in the summer time. It seemed like everytime we went to the pool this past summer, the pool would be overrun with toddlers and young kids. Also some parents would just send their kids to the pool and not be there supervising them (there was a lifeguard on duty). A couple of times some of the kids were really ill-behaved and made it annoying to be at the pool. I just wanted to relax, read a book, and have a drink, not watch a couple of bratty 10 year olds beat their one friend with a noodle. 2) Fees for everything (it seemed). Parking was $45/month when we moved in, but when we got the renewal notice, it was going up to $60/month. Then if you wanted a storage unit it was another $25/month. Pet fees are non-refundable and were $500. 3) The gates that were supposed to be "secure" never were. You could just pull on them slightly and they would open without having to use a fob. So while there was the allusion of safety and security, there really wasn't. 4) The apartments are carpeted. I know that is not a con for everyone, but I hate carpet. Especially with a dog it is a nightmare. Also I found that the carpet didn't hold up very well. 5) It's located next to the Public Safety Center. We never had problems living near the jail and it was convenient when I needed to get fingerprinted for my current job. But living near a jail is not for everyone and is a small con I think. Overall, Carlyle Mill was a good place to live for a year especially while we got to know the area. I would recommend it to people moving to the area who want to be near Old Town and want to be walking distance to a Metro. read more

Not much good to say about this place. We lived there a year and I am beyond glad that we didn't renew our lease. The Good: -Right next to the metro -Right next to the movie theater -Gym was decent with the exception of the fact that equipment would stay "out of order" for months on end -Basketball & tennis court on the roof -Apartment had character (single bedroom/not really a bedroom didn't have a doors) The Bad: -Parking garage It was overpriced considering it wasn't really secure. The main door was broke for the first 6 months we lived there. There was a slew of break ins reported. Management claimed they checked the garage to make sure only tenants were parking inside the garage, not true. Once I complained about it because it seemed like every weekend I had to park far away from my apartment because of all the "guests" inside the garage instead of in guest parking. The manager at the time told me that they tow vehicles every night and patrol the garage, blaten lie I never EVER witnessed any tows or patrols. Residents are also inconsiderate and literally take up two spots because they are too lazy to park correctly or sometimes parked inches from your car door leaving it fairly difficult to get into your car without dinging them. -Apartment grounds There is always mail overflowing onto the ground in the trash cans near the mailboxes. There is always trash around the grounds. I was irate one weekend we went to grill, there was beer cans literally every where the grills were left a complete mess tables were piled upon each other. There was vomit on the ground in front of the elevator near the bike racks once that sat there even after I told the front office about it. Doors/gates were ALWAYS broke which means the actual property was NOT secure. The pool opens late for the season and seems to close early and its only 3 ft deep. Not to mention there was a number of times that I would walk out the door to find multiple cop cars at my building because of some domestic this happened 3 to 4 times while we lived there. The elevators are the slowest I've ever encountered. -Dumpsters/"Recycling area" One dumpster per building, seem a bit off? Yes, not to mention the dumpster would malfunction frequently thus residents would just keep piling and piling regardless to the point that trash was overflowing into the garage roadway. It was disgusting and embarrassing when you had guests and they would see this heaping pile of garbage. The recycling area is a joke. People just dump their trash there because it's convenient and closer than the dumpster. -Staff We had an issue with one of the staff members when we moved in that failed to tell us about a detail needed for the renters insurance and decided he would process a fee that they tacked on. I complained to the manager in which she had to take it off because he was in the wrong. It appears that the turn over for staff is high at least the people in the leasing office. They are nice for the most part but if you bring an issue to their attention they seem to brush it off. -Mailboxes The mailman always seemed to leave the slab unsecure which probably was the reason someone opened our mail and stole money from a card. -Apartment Horrible. You could hear everything through the floor and walls. I could hear the person upstairs using the bathroom, that tells you how horribly built it is. We had an extremely long list of maintenance calls starting from the month that we moved in until we moved out. Random things breaking, bugs, (and we were NOT on the 1st floor) plumbing issues. The list went on and on. The appliances were unbearably loud. We literally would have to wait to run the dishwasher until we went to bed otherwise we couldn't hear the tv or anything else for that matter. Appliances are old. Apartment is overpriced in general for cheap appliances, carpet, fixtures, etc. -Residents Now this is based off when we lived there. The residents were rude and inconsiderate. They would go out of their way not to talk to you when you were walking by. They wouldn't clean up after themselves. There was never any gas in the grill because someone would ALWAYS leave the propane tank open. Oh and P.S. Your next door neighbors are juveniles in a detention center. So yea, nice little detail they don't tell you. All and all, seriously this place is horrible, weigh all your options before you sign that lease! read more

We lived here from 2011 till 2014. There was always new people working in the office, we went through at least 3 managers and countless office workers. The maintenance guys were always excellent and hard working. My biggest issue was every year they would try to raise your rent several hundred dollars. Several times I had to go back and see what they could do about it. You would see the same apartment online for less than what you are paying and their answer was that empty apartments are worth less that ones that people were in. I understand rent going up at the new lease but when you try to raise is 15%+ after one year, something is off. To end on a high note, it is in a wonderful location that we loved. Walking distance to many restaurants, a movie theater, Whole Foods and two different metro stops made living there all the much better. read more

I had a one year lease at Carlyle Mill in 2011-2012. I decided not to renew my lease. Like anything, you get what you pay for! I've lived in apartments and leased condos in the area. For my money, leasing a condo is the better option. Here are the pros and cons of living at this place: Good things: 1. Price. Probably the least expensive place near Old Town and Near a Metro stop. Other complexes in the same neighborhood are as much as 40%+ the monthly rent of Carlyle Mill. There was no amenity fee when I lived there. Parking was $45. Storage space was around $30 I believe. I did have a storage space, and it was nice a big -- probably about the sized of a small bathroom. The website was sometimes down, but it was a convenient way to pay rent. Bad things 1. Location Some reviews on this site say the location is good. Short walk to Metro -- good. Short walk to city jail -- bad. I-495 outside your window -- bad. Truth be told, noise from the highway is not that bad, but a major interstate is just steps away. 2. Security This was a big one. The garage door was broken in the "open" position for MONTHS at a time. The way the apartment is setup, there's the garage door (or some entry gates, also often broken) and the door to your apartment. If you can picture it, the complex is setup kind of like a 4-level "motel" rather than a "hotel" with a lobby and all the rest. 3. Low price, but "cheap" too Fixtures and furnishings are up-to-date, but pretty cheap. Ok, ok, ok... what do you expect in an apartment, right? For $2k, maybe something better than the cheapest vinyl flooring, cheapest carpeting, most basic freezer/refrigerator, and HVAC that sounds like a freight train. I also moved in to a few things not working. However, maintenance was good here -- they always fixed things within a day or so. Other things: - Insects were pretty terrible in this place. No bedbugs, but lots of exotic-looking spiders, and other creatures - "hidden" fees... no move-in or move-out fee, but they did charge me $200 in cleaning fees for an apartment that was left in better condition then when I moved in; left email for the property manager, no response yet (will update this post if I get a response) - Three different property managers within a 12-month period Would I live here again? No. Would I live at another Equity Apartment? Maybe, this place wasn't THAT bad Would I recommend it to someone else? Maybe, because it is less expensive than other apartments in the area (depending on the time of year), and may be OK if one accept the negatives described above read more

I visited this place as a potential resident. I was greeted at the front door by Kelsey, a professional, well-mannered employee. She gave me adequate time to formulate my impression as we took a tour of the flat available immediately. She wasn't too pushy or too eager to make a sale--overall she was objective, a very welcome change to those who want you to sign immediately. The flat we toured was a 1br 1 ba apt on the first floor. The apartment was spacious enough for one to two people. Also the Cameron Run River/stream ran just behind the apartment. Something I liked about the apartment was that the surrounding area was quite green. Ample plants and shade from the sun provides a nice contrast to how busy the rest of Alexandria is. I couldn't comment on the noise of the neighbors as it was almost 10am when we started the tour. However, I could see that the doors that lead to the back patio were a little worn down, presumably from the weather. The communal space looks nice. However, I could imagine the communal gym could get pretty busy after work because they cater to a surprising number of tenants. They also had a recreation area with a pool table, Foosball table, and a bar where you can drink and bring friends. The only downside is that the bar area is bring your own drinks. Given the location, I think the 1 br apt is reasonably priced at about 1600 per month, but that's without utilities. I would like to give this place a 3.5 stars, but the overall quality of the building and density of rwsidents (and because I'm Jonesing for the Meridian apartments next to it) leaves something to be desired read more

I looked absolutely everywhere in Alexandria for an affordable, safe, and clean (pet-friendly) complex with amenities. This was so very hard to find in our price range...until we came to Carlyle Mill! I lived here for 8 months with roommates in a three bedroom; I loved it so much, I now live in a one-bedroom loft with my fiance. This renovated, spacious loft is awesome- there is so much to love, from the garden tub to the updated appliances. Let me just say that I've moved 10 times in 3 different states within the past 8 or so years. I have NEVER not had some type of problem, often major...until Carlyle Mill! We primarily have worked with Erik who made our leasing to moving to living experience seamless and fabulous. He is outstanding. Josh, the manager, is also a standup guy- super professional and very kind. We have never had any major maintenance issues; the minor ones were handled extremely promptly and very well by the incredible staff here. I love the community features, especially grilling dinner on the rooftop in the warmer months! I truly believe that the only reason why this complex, which is a stone's throw from the metro, is better priced than others is because it is next to the jail. Don't let this deter you. I have never heard a peep from the detention center, AND I feel safer knowing there are always officers and deputies right next door. I have read a lot about Carlyle Mill. I feel reviewers often pick at the littlest of things that do not truly matter. If they feel the costs here for rent and other amenities are unfavorable, then they do not know the area well. For what you get, this is one of the very best deals for the ever-so-expensive Northern VA market. There might be "extra" fees for parking, etc., but you will know them up front and STILL the total will be less than the base rent at other places in the area. If you are looking for a quiet, safe, updated, spacious, and clean place to live, which is metro accessible with a ton of community features, this is it! read more

The good: location- close to Alexndria/PTO, freeway/highway (whatever y'all call them out here); best price around here (although not best value, necessarily- see below); management is good, not spectacular, but above average; front office (especially Damon) has been good; good square footage; big bathrooms; feels "open" inside; laid out well with open kitchens; workout room is OK (weights go to 50 lbs; 6 or 7 cardio machines (3 treadmills), although one treadmill was out of commission for almost 4 months; very basic machines for weights); nice entertainment room and movie theatre; parking is never full (or at least I have never seen it full); maintenance is fast. The bad: (1) can hear everything your neighbors do (I can hear the neighbors above me talking,playing radio, playing w/ dog, opening/shutting drawers, and just walking). In fact, have heard them doing the business before...Not cool. And it ain't really their fault- the walls and floors are just thin. But especially the floors. Maybe it's just my apt, but I can hear EVERYTHING. I even talked to the neighbor above, and I have reached the conclusion it's just the building/floors. (2) the carpet is super cheap- comes apart at the edges easily. (3) the appliances/cabinets are cheap. (4) electric ranges (maybe more personal preference). (5) the apartment "settles"= annoying and loud at times. (6) balconies (most) are tiny because they are french balconies= almost useless Bottom line: you get what you pay for. I don't live here, but my friend does and I think I've stayed here long enough to warrant a review of the place. So the highway noise is really loud, especially if you want crack open a window instead of turning on the AC. Well that's okay for me since I can probably sleep through a bulldozer and a thunderstorm doing a duet together, but for more sensitive sleepers beware! What else? Well there's some nice amenities and it's really close to the highway, metro, old town, and overall felt very safe, especially with gates that required a passkey everywhere around the complex. Would I live here? Maybe, I'm not so keen on the highway noise every time I open a window but the amenities and proximity to everything useful are fairly nice. I have lived at Carlyle Mill for almost 5 years and it truly feels like home. We moved here because the location is ideal- super close to Old Town and the Eisenhower Metro- but we stayed because of the team. Everyone makes us feel like family, and the service team in particular is exceptional. Romero, Troy and Cesar are all professional, efficient, and friendly. As an Equity employee myself, I know what great service should look like and they're the picture of it. read more
