The saddest day was when I had to sell my Honda of 15 years. It was my first new car, a car I bought myself and maintained religiously like a little old lady. But the repairs were starting to get expensive. Little annoying things were happening - like not being able to go in reverse on a regular basis. And the driver's seat felt like it was going to eject me at any moment. My neighbor recommended CarMax as a solid, honest place to sell a used car. Scott the sales person was helpful, but not entirely forthcoming. The bank was closed when we tried to get our son's car and so we went ahead with the Car Max financing, being told that we could switch it out when the bank was open. We brought the acceptance letter down to them and everything went downhill from there. They wanted a check cut? Who does that anymore? and why? They don't have something called a computer? They when the bank asked that they show the title registration application as having the bank as the lienholder, they refused to do that saying it was past the "3 day window" (not what Scott told us) and they would have to do a new purchase agreement (not just paperwork either.) That means they would have to purchase the car and then wait and then (if the car was still available) we could buy it again. That seriously sounds like a scam. I have purchased several cars in the past and have never had this kind of difficulty. To be fair, the manager, Myra, explained everything patiently, even though it wasn't helpful. I don't think I will go through this again with them. I came here yesterday to sell my car, what should have been a hour process turned into a 3 hour process and expected us to wait an additional 1.5 hours.. came in this morning thinking it shouldn't be long and they told me it was a 4 hour wait!!! When I asked why it was going to take so long, the lady with the red hair gave me attitude... it's now 5pm and I'm currently sitting in the waiting room still waiting. I'm hearing other guest saying they've also been waiting for hours and keep adding on waiting time. This is ridiculous and even more ridiculous that we are in the middle of a spiking pandemic and they're having 15 people in an enclosed waiting room. Waiting hours on end! I sold my car to CarMax and it was a great experience. I made an appointment online and the appraisal took less than 30 minutes. Travis was very friendly and explained the whole process to me. I was offered almost double of what the dealership I bought my new car offered me. I called to find out what time the department that buys cars back closed and was told at 9pm. I came back at 8 and was told they couldn't buy back my car and I'd have to come back another day. I drove 45 mins from Whittier so I was very annoyed. I came back a few days later and was first in line. It takes at least an hour and a half for them to drive and evaluate the car so keep that in mind. Signing everything over was so easy and my check was given to me right then and there. I'd definitely recommend selling your car here if you want a fair amount for it. read more

Absolutely the worst car buying experience ever!! I bought a 2017 Toyota Tacoma with about 70,000 miles back in March. A week after buying it the engine started making a weird noise and the idle was jumping up and down. Also a noise from the suspension that sounds like a metal clank when hitting a dip or bump, and some smal almost marble like ticking in engine. I immediately called them and took it in not only did I have 30 day warranty but I also purchased the extra warranty to cover everything. After having it about a week they said they replaced the vacuum pump which should be there idle and weird noise problem and that they replaced the upper control arms but the suspension still has noise. I told them keep it till they fix it right so after about almost 2 months of them having it they replaced bushings and ball joints and returned it to me saying they can't figure out the noise and that it must be normal!!! Absolutely ridiculous!! I work on cars a bit and I know a metal to metal clank from suspension is not normal. Due to needing transportation (I had to pay for a loaner car) I had to settle with a letter from them saying if something breaks they would be responsible... such bullshit! Now fast forward after driving with this clanking noise for 8 months I noticed my alignment is off and the front tires are wearing unevenly. I called them back and advised that whatever this issue with the suspension they are unable to fix is, it is causing my alignment to be off and ruining my new tires. They again told me well if we couldn't fix it before we can't now and that the alignment wouldn't be covered under any of my warranty even though it's due to a problem they can't fix that IS under warranty. They said I can take it to Toyota and pay out of pocket to see if they can fix the suspension issue and then if they do they will reimburse me ! I think that's a lie and they will not reimburse me and leave me hanging with the bill they are responsible for!! I am filing a claim with bbb but most of all I am a aaa and chp tow truck driver so I come across many people needing to be towed in this area and every time someone wants to get towed here I tell them my horrible experience and advise them to take their business elswhere! Not only that hut anyone looking to buy a vehicle or trade or sell I tell everyone stay far from these lying crooks!! I'm proud to say about 80% of the people I share this with take their business somewhere else! I will continue to get as many people away from this place! My experience with CarMax was relatively effortless. While I had hesitations about selling my car in general, I definitely had my doubts about CarMax. Mainly because I didn't realize certain facets of the process. So all I did was sell my car. It was newer (2015). In great shape. With less than 12,000 miles. The first thing we did was set up an appointment online. We could have gotten one with an hour, but I settled for the earliest time the following day. Easy. Second, we went in to have the car appraised. Took about a half hour. After they crunched the numbers for us, they supplied us with a single fairly explanatory sheet of paper with their offer. We could have gone around the side right away where you turn your car in, but we didn't have our ride home. So we took it back home. Made sure everything was out of it for real. No appointment was necessary to take care of the rest, however, the sale did take a bit longer. This happened later that same day on the afternoon of December 16, 2017. I'm happy to report that no issues have risen since that time. Appraisals are free. You're not obligated to do anything after that. The staff was in general nice. The women's restroom was just okay clean. TIP There is a "kid room," but there isn't much in there at all for them to play with so bring snacks, toys, and your patience if you're waiting with kids - or as in our case if your kids are surrounded by others' hyper rude no-sense-of-sharing spoiled arse brats. November 2020, Schedule all appointments!! (highly suggested) I came in to get my car appraised since I intended to trade it in for my next car. The location has a private lot in which customers can park in but it can get busy so come early. We walked in to check in to be asked to wait outside until someone called us to continue with my appointment. We waited approximately 30mins before receiving a call to confirm the appointment and addition 15mins for the representative to meet us at my car. Once they arrived they explained that they would take a look at the car and give us a estimate based on several factors: buy back value, cosmic wear, mileage etc. After the representative took some photos and finished his inspection he went inside to do some research and returned with a offer. When going over the reasons of the offer several points were made that I felt was not an accurate description of my vehicle such as saying the car was given a paint job post dealer. I have been the only owner of my vehicle for 11years and have never taken it to get a paint job. After the experience I felt selling my car to carmax would not be wise so I did walk away. read more

After over an hour and not hearing anything I decided to leave. Here are a few pointers in case you decide to value other people's time eventually. 1. Don't make appointments. Operator should say "I'm sorry but we're very busy and understaffed you are welcome to come by for an appraisal but may wait for a few hours" 2. Upon arrival apologize up front. "Hi I'm sorry but we're running behind today. Can you leave the car here and we will appraise it when we have time" 3. "Hi I'm sorry we screwed up. We can't see you for awhile today. Here's a $25 Starbucks gift card. Can we schedule and appointment for a different day"? 4. Come to the customers car who's been waiting well over their scheduled appointment time. Offer a bottle of water and a snack. Just a few ideas, of course I'm not as skilled or experienced as the great managers at CarMax. read more

I called them and told them that the car had a light come on after I took it there and they told me to call Later, it was the light for the cooler and I told the guy I was scared to drive it, because the car was new, he told me to put some water in, And i told him the car's manual said not to put in water for no reason, and he said he would call me, and he never called. Jessica was friendly and cordial at first, but when it came to my vehicle appraisal, she became profusely pushy, and unfriendly. She also mentioned they don't use the KBB value of vehicles, but showed me the KBB value, and proceeded to offer me the KBB value... contradictory, misleading, and indicative of incompetence. She mentioned, "I've done this 15 times today." Which alludes to her being tired of her job, and it greatly showed. Upon completion of my appraisal, she asked, "Do you have any questions before you leave?" Umm... okay... even if I wanted to sell my car to CarMax, she didn't allow me to do so by quite frankly kicking me out. We made an appointment for an appraisal for my elderly mother's car. Even though we had a scheduled appointment which they called to confirm in advance, the gentleman we spoke with was not present and it took them 20 minutes to get someone to help us. Then the appraisal took far longer than the 30-40 minutes they told us. And then after waiting, they presented us with an offer that was nearly $10K below the KBB trade in value. I think they thought we were disparate because my mom was very ill. Well, we left and I'll never do business with CarMax and would not recommend you do business with them either!! The person I took a test drive with told me about maintenance costs for a Volvo and warned me to look into the depreciation for a Toyota. He was on his first local test drive since transferring from a dealership in Colorado to be with his fiance. I had tried a 2008 Camry with great backseat air conditioning. More expensive fancy models are on the showroom floor. The computer kiosks are for comparing models or transferring the car you want to a closer store. Their inventory is on their website. First time going into CarMax trade in my car and buy a new car as a first time buyer. We were looking to buy a Rav4 but did some exploring and found a different car. We completely fell in love with it. Test drive was pretty simple. They just gave us a paper with instructions and we drove on our own. The appraisal for my car was also fast. The worker test drove my car with gloves and a mask. She even wiped it down afterwards. Afterwards they even helped us unload our car. I didn't prepare myself to sell the car right away, so I had a lot of stuff (including Costco rice...) We got help with Jerry and he was awesome! I accidentally forgot my sunglasses in my old car and Jerry was able to get it for me. There was also a guy named Erickson who was also very helpful since he personally owned an Audi, so we had a couple of questions about basic car knowledge about navigation and oil change. The overall process was pretty good! I don't like it when sales people are super aggressive and push things at you. It took some time to finish up the paperwork for the car to be ready. Took over 4 hours from looking at the car, test driving, appraisal, paperwork, and etc. Side note, apparently CarMax Buena Park and Ontario has the biggest car selection. We previously went to the Duarte location, but didnt like it as much. read more

Anytime I try to call the service department no one ever answers. It doesn't seem to matter what time of the day it is either! If you leave a message, no one calls back. If you call a different department and ask them to give a message to service, no one calls back. They might as well just not have one! IF, and that's a huge if, someone finally does call back, you might as well just talk to a cat because that's how helpful they are. It sucks because I need work done on my car and I don't want to go to a dealer because then my warranty deductible costs more.
