Excellent purchase experience. I have been looking for several months, on-line and at many other dealers for the next car. Finally stumbled on what I was looking for when I finally to check out the CarMax listings. The car was in SC, easy shipment to Wilmington for a first look and test drive. That first look and test drive was delayed for a week because CarMax found a problem with the car. CarMax immediately refunded the transport fee while still holding the car in reserve for my eventual test drive. I hadn't even asked about that, I was impressed. The week delay was not a problem for me, I'm happy they took it Bob King Mercedes for its diagnosis and easy fix. The team there (at CarMax), including many in the service department were transparent in communicating the cars status while I waited to test drive it. I don't recall all the names but do recall Josh and Martin. Overall, everybody we've met or talked to (even just walking through the office space), made greetings, were professional and courteous, great bunch of people. On test drive and purchase day, we were fortunate to have Katie Ricketts as our Customer Specialist to take us through the complete process. We had gone into the local store and although they did not have a vehicle we were interested in, we selected one to be delivered for a $99 fee. It was due into the store 12/16-22/24. We called and checked if the car was in several times, but was told the same thing "it was in transit". On 12/22/24 we received a text after hours that the car was delayed. On 12/26/24, we received a message that the "rims did not meet the standards and would be sanded and painted". We had no idea when the vehicle would be available. By this time, the purchase offer expired and the New Year's holiday was here. After the holiday, we resubmitted for our vehicle to be purchased and it was nearly $2000 less than 10 Days before!!!!! Due to the delay of 2 weeks, and the loss of $2000 in what our trade would be worth, we purchased a vehicle elsewhere. We feel strongly that CarMax was not being straight forward about issues with the vehicle we paid to ship to Wilmington. Therefore, we took our business to another local dealer. Today, 1/7/25, we received a message the car we had paid to ship to Wilmington was now available; 3 weeks and 4 days after placing the order and receiving a written offer from CarMax!!! I love Carmax. I have purchased several cars at Carmax over the years. 1) The Carmax app is great. Easy to find what you are looking for. 2) The buying process is easy. A lot of it you can do online. 3) Great selection. If the Carmax in your area doesn't have the vehicle then they can have it shipped from another location. Note, there may be a fee. 4) When you visit the location, there is no pressure. 5) Carmax financing is very competitive and in most cases, provides the lowest interest rate 6) 30 day return policy if you don't like the vehicle. 7) No shady car dealership tricks here. Very transparent process. When I came to the Wilmington location, I had no plans to purchase a car. We were only coming to look at a car we seen online, just to test drive it to determine if we wanted that model. Buyer Beware: Why I'll Never Buy from CarMax Wilmington Again I want to start by saying this isn't easy to write. I've been a long-time advocate for CarMax. My family has purchased over 16 vehicles from their locations across the country. Personally, I've bought two vehicles myself and helped my fiancée purchase another. Until now, every experience was positive. But what happened with CarMax Wilmington, NC has completely changed that -- and I want to help others avoid the same mistake. My most recent purchase was a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas. From the very beginning, the vehicle had serious issues: * Violent front-end shaking at highway speeds * Shuddering while braking * Jerky transmission behavior -- skipping gears, missed shifts, harsh downshifts I've brought the vehicle back to CarMax four times. Every time, they dismissed the transmission issues. Instead, they performed tire balancing and replaced the rotors -- none of which solved the core problem. When I returned again, they finally acknowledged the rotors were warped yet again, but then dropped a bombshell: my 12-month warranty had been voided due to "commercial use." Their reasoning? I have a trailer hitch installed (on a vehicle with a towing package) and a sticker for my small landscaping company on the window. That's it. The vehicle has never towed anything over 500 lbs, never carried equipment, and is driven less than 10 miles per day. Still, I received this text from their service rep -- not a call, but a text -- right after speaking on the phone: "Hi Mr. Hassett, this is Cayman from CarMax. I noticed the stickers on the side of the car and the tow hitch... just want to give a heads up that because of evidence of the vehicle being used for commercial use, there will be no 12/12 [warranty] moving forward." Let me get this straight: They refused to address the known issues, found a flimsy excuse to void my warranty, and didn't even have the decency to communicate it honestly. But it gets worse. Frustrated, I brought the Atlas to Volkswagen directly. Their technicians confirmed: 1. The vehicle had previously been in a front-end collision, which CarMax never disclosed. 2. The transmission required service over 10,000 miles ago -- long before I purchased it. 3. The rotors CarMax installed were low-grade, and there's no reason they should have warped again so quickly under normal, light use. This isn't just about bad service. It's about a company that: * Sells flawed vehicles without full disclosure * Avoids costly repairs by denying warranty coverage without proof * Disrespects loyal customers with dismissive, dishonest communication I was told multiple times that my transmission and brake issues should be covered under the 12-month warranty. But once it came time to actually stand behind their word, CarMax looked for a way out -- and found one by twisting what qualifies as "commercial use." Let me be clear: This vehicle was not used commercially. It was not abused. It was sold with existing issues and misrepresented. CarMax Wilmington -- you've lost my business for good. And not just mine -- my entire family, my friends, and anyone else I can warn will know exactly what happened here. From an $18k car to a $45k truck, we are treated like first class every time. Additionally - GET CARMAX CARE service! While we didn't use on one vehicle, it paid for the plan times-THREE on another that needed some major repairs (some things you just cannot know until driving a car for 6+ months & even the best mechanic cannot predict these things!). The Max-Care plan is fantastic, and SERIOUSLY covers you A$*!! If its a lot financially, just get a minimum plan at LEAST. After years thinking Dealerships "treated us well" I will NEVER buy another car from a dealer - dealers are GREAT for service on a branded vehicle, but their sales departments & finance processes are antiquated, exhausting and just plain annoying. If you want a great used vehicle with a great Service Department check out CarMax before buying your next used vehicle. During my recent CarMax service visit, Cayman Starnes and Chancey Hardison went over and beyond to resolve the issue with my truck. Initially, my truck was sent to the Ram Dealership where it sat for weeks and they said that they could not duplicate the issue and returned it un-repaired. Cayman and Chancey were relentless and they did not give up until they were able to duplicate and resolve the issue. They took the time to listen to me and for that I say thank you. I've owned many cars and worked with many service departments over the years but I have never seen anyone as dedicated as these two. You can tell these guys love their job and it shows. Carmax also provided a loaner vehicle for the entire time my vehicle was in the shop. I would recommend CarMax, the MaxCare Extended Warranty and the CarMax Service Department to anyone in the market for a used vehicle. *** I would not advise buying a car from any Carmax *** I had to put a star rating to submit this but trust me, I did not want to. My husband traded in his 2017 50th anniversary addition Camaro for something with better gas and can hold our growing family. He drove off the lot with a Jeep Cherokee 2014 that was said to have had a 125 point inspection. 4 days after he brought it home the check engine light turned on. He took it straight to the CARMAX in Jacksonville, NC where they did diagnostic testing and it was showing a code for a misfire and the mechanic said they could not do anything about it. After driving it for a few more weeks the light would disappear. The check engine like reappeared 3 weeks after and the vehicle started to overheat. He called about the overheating issues and they couldn't get him an appointment for another 4 weeks. The MaxCare advised him to take it to an "outside" mechanic. Where the car spent several weeks in and out of the shop while we battled to get MaxCare to pay for parts and for parts to be ordered. They told my husband that it would be best to have the engine completely replaced ,but MaxCare would not pay for it until the "engine failed". Fast forward several months later, the car finally does just that. My husband and I were driving in the Jeep heading home when the check engine light came on and the car started to overheat and shake. We immediately called CARMAX to disclose what was happening because we felt it was an emergency situation, they said they could not "get us in" for another few weeks and told us to call Dodge to see if they could get the Jeep in. Both facilities had pushed out appointments. We called CARMAX and explained the urgency and were stern about getting a sooner appointment. We were able to take it into carmax in Jacksonville for them to take it to Dodge (Western) because they would be able to actually work on the vehicle. MaxCare said that they would replace the current engine with an engine of their choosing, but not the lower half of the engine because it was warped due to the overheating. After going over 6 weeks without a vehicle and being offered a rental only after all of the MaxCare testing requirements were done (taking several weeks in and of itself) we were given a rental for 7 days. Finally we get the Jeep back and it seems to be fine. We have the Jeep for less than 3 weeks and the day after Thanksgiving the transmission drops out of the car while we are DRIVING!?!?!? We get assistance pushing the Jeep into a dirt area where it is picked up the next day and taken back to Dodge advised by Carmax because they said they cannot do transmission work. Now, I am no mechanic ,but how does this happen after it just left the shop meant to repair it. Mind you nothing of a faulty transmission, driving shaft or anything else was brought to our attention the entire time they had this vehicle. They have now had our car for another six weeks where they have had Dodge and MaxCare go back and forth telling my husband different information about fees and him covering costs out of pocket for parts that certain shops do not want to touch but they do not want to transport the vehicle to a mechanic that will do the work. And the mechanic that already has the vehicle wants to charge a handling fee for parts that are not "theirs"? The day they finally finish the transmission replacement mechanics realized that the drive shaft ALSO needs to be repaired. This will cost us the difference between what MaxCare will cover for Dodge's Part (drive shaft) and the handling fee for the transmission. This has cost us hours at work, appointments, family time and basic travel because we only have one vehicle at this time and we are both Active Duty service members that need reliable transportation and are not always able to miss days of work, etc. While my husband has maintained consistent contact with representatives for CarMax discussing options and price coverage because this vehicle has done nothing but give us issues and has been in the shop most of the time we have had it. He feels as if the information being told to him is constantly changing and costing us more money. This is outrageous and has cost us so much to try and get a working vehicle. What a disappointment. We visited this dealership and had our car appraised. they did not have what we wanted so we left and found what we wanted at another Carmax. We paid $500 to have the car we wanted shipped here. It took 10 days to arrive and when we went to get it they refused to honor the appraisal because it was 10 days old. I bought a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid, and before the end of the 7 days, I decided that I wanted something a bit bigger. I didn't know what I wanted, so I returned it, with zero hassle. I received some great suggestions from the CARMAX staff on vehicles that I might want to look into. 2 weeks later, I decided on a 2017 Honda Pilot and had it transferred in from another CARMAX location. I took it to my trusted mechanic in Raleigh, who pointed out a few minor issues. CARMAX gives you 7 days to return your vehicle and a 90-day, 4000-mile limited warranty. My concerns fell within the warranty, and the CARMAX service department was great to work with and they addressed all my concerns. Wilmington CARMAX made car shopping a fun, happy, awesome experience! Prior to shopping at CARMAX, I had been to 12 other dealerships and car lots between Wilmington and Raleigh on my hunt for a used car, and I had ended up having a really bad buying experience from a certified dealership. Once you drive off the lot of a typical used car dealership, you're basically on your own if you decide it's not the right vehicle for you. When calling to get these things fixed they're saying there's nothing they can do because it's "out of the 90 day window and there were never any work orders placed." I cannot believe she was profiled based on her skin color after she had already paid her down payment on vehicle. I was liking the CarMax experience in Wilmington North Carolina until I sat down to purchase the vehicle. I had a cashiers check for the full amount less car max's hidden fee of $399. I told the sales associate that in the state of North Carolina the only legal fees, I, the buyer was responsible for was the 3% sales tax, title and registration and asked to speak with a manager. The manager, Kyle, was a pompous jerk. Knowing how upset I was, he basically said too bad that's our policy. I was furious and almost walked away from the purchase, however I'm an extremely busy person and didn't have time to start over, so I bit the bullet and paid the fee. If you look online not all CarMax's charge this outrageous fee, in fact it's illegal in some states. Excellent experience. Shopping online was very low pressure and I was able to place a hold on my car until my appointment. I was prequalified for financing over the phone, so when I arrived all I had to do was take a test drive and go over the paperwork.
