My mom was moved from CHOMP to Carmel Hills for Hospist hospice care for the three weeks she was in their CARE - the staff made her comfortable and felt with anything that came about. Mind you their was a family member with her 24/7 until she was called home. Does that make a difference - maybe but the staff was attentive to other patients just the same. Its not a happy place - people are at various stadges of health and some are dying. That's life - to complain that enough was not done? Well some folks are never happy and others are selfish with there time and expect more than what can be offered. Think before you complain - was there something I could have done at that time to change the outcome. As for theft - items of value should be left at home! And likely it still could have come up missing - if there was sentimental value. Its possibly been secured by a family member... Thank you to all read more

My mother entered the facility April 3rd of last year. She was also a hospice patient. The care that Carmel Hill has provided to my mom has been exceptional. They helped her live her last days with dignity and grace. They were responsive to her needs, although she was somewhat non-communicative. She was bathed daily and cleaned up on a regular schedule. The staff has been more that accommodating to our family's requests. They are truly an exceptional group to work with. My experience with my mother being a resident here has all been very positive. I find that if you have a loved one here it is very important that you are present that you visit often and get to know the staff. The CNA's took very good care of my mother and communicated well with our private caregivers. They were always attentive to all her needs and worked as a team with our private caregivers. The Nurses were exceptionally caring by making sure my mother took her meds with chocolate pudding. The activities staff were enthusiastic and caring; the kitchen staff were attentive to my mother's preferences in food. The entire staff is to be commended for the professional way they go about difficult job they have. Once again, I would say that if you do have a loved one in care anywhere you should visit them often. I think that really affects their care, when the staff knows that your loved one is not just being dropped off but instead they are still an active part of their family. My mother recently passed away April 13, 2022 she had dementia. For years, we care for her at home and as she progressed, we had to make that hard decision to place her here. We are so fortunate to have found this place for my mother, how all the staff took such great care of her. I want to thank the administration Carole Dorsey, RN Director of Nursing Services for accommodating our whole family to be able to see my mom on her last moments of life, and Thank you to all the staff for the kindness and wonderful care you showed for my mother. Cons: This is where you go to die horribly or drugged. Otherwise, you will not come out well. If you are forced here be sure to have someone fight for you. CHOMP owns this and treats it like the ugly step-child. Spends more money on the front landscaping than on the patients. There is no landscaping in the back. You will argue with them over medication, physiotherapy, the food (canned and full of corn syrup), your needs, and internet connection. Their internet works on occasion. You are threatened by the staff if you complain and you will be lied to. Positive: Two of the nurses were exemplary. read more

My wife just spent two weeks in Carmel Hills Care Center. Now, first of all nobody wants to be there but if you have to be in that sort of facility, this is the best. The people are wonderful. The care is supreme. I can't recommend this place highly enough it's fabulous. Everybody who works there is been there for years. They treated my wife like a queen. We are so happy that this is the place we chose for her rehabilitation from hip surgery. You couldn't find a better place on the monterey Peninsula. Yes there's always shortages that's endemic to this type of an institution. I find that if you have a loved one here it's very important that you are present that you visit often and get to know the staff. The CNA's take very good care of my mother the physical therapist really care they do a great job, the activities staff are enthusiastic and caring, the entire staff is to be commended for the professional way they go about difficult job they have. Our family is so grateful for the excellent care she has been provided. A throwback to the 1960s. I'm pretty sure that it hasn't been updated since they built it. I felt abandoned by the staff and they misread my medication orders. I finally requested to be returned to CHOMP. the nurse said that she had to text the medical director and that he would respond in 10-15 minutes. After 45 I called 911 to be transported. read more

I am writing this review to warn other caregivers, patients and family members that this facility is potentially dangerous. They are under staffed and not adequately responsive to give safe care. There is a reason why Community Hospital of Monterey (CHOMP) has a 3-star rating for them, not a 5-star, like similar facilities. My friend was admitted to Carmel Hills Care Center facility for recuperative care. We found that attendants were not responding to the call button in a timely way. Especially at night. During her stay she could not get timely access to her bronchial dilator / Inhaler. Although she has been a lifelong user, they would not let her have one at her bedside. During the late hours of the night, she went into respiratory distress and called for assistance. But no one answered her call button. Fortunately, she had presence of mind to call 911 for herself before she passed out. When the ambulance arrived, they found her unresponsive, blue and her call light was still on, unanswered. The staff at Carmel Hills were surprised to see the first responders at the facility. The ambulance people began to intubation on her but this precipitated cardiac arrest. Through immediate resuscitation, in the ambulance and at the ER, they brought her back. She is recovering well, but with broken ribs. If the above was not bad enough, my friend experienced additional problems while staying at this facility. She was not there two days when her iPhone was taken from the room and disappeared., She was totally bed ridden so it was not left somewhere as suggested by the staff. It was fortunate that I had replaced it quickly. At the end of her stay there, after she was taken to the hospital, the facility packed up her things to vacate the room. Missing were personal effects and since they took the iPhone earlier, they decided to also take her charger as well. I would like to see this facility investigated for safety. read more

Staff shortage, so no longer taking CHOMP urgent referrals. Very patronizing in their refusal to accept the hospital referral. VERY focused on money; no concern for a patient coming out of CHOMP and needing good care close by the Hospital. Very sad situation. They were once well respected. They wouldn't even let me tour the facility. CHOMP (local hospital) was trying to coordinate their doctors being able to come by to check on my 90-year old Mom and her tolerance to a new med. They steal! The very first hour there, what I thought was the "Welcome Wagon", was actually a theft in the making. The care giver, Leticia, started opening my personal bags, rummaging through everything, taking out whatever she wanted. She took my dirty clothes, consisting of new polo shirts, t-shirts, underwear, and socks. Plus, she took a new medical device, given to me by the VA hospital where I had my surgery. I saw her take these things within three feet from me. I thought, maybe, she's just rearranging my things. This is my first time here at Carmel Hills, so I thought this must be their standard procedure, and she'll return everything she took. I was wrong. After a few days, three articles of clothing out of fifteen, came back, destroyed. The three articles were splashed with an unwashable solvent that doesn't come out. The other twelve articles never came back. Now, these were brand new, when she took them. I talked with the administrator of the facility, Jerrold Christensen. He said he'd replace the articles. I told him it would be hard to replace the clothes. He agreed to reimburse me. In fact, I've spoken to him three times since I left and have not received any thing. It's been four months. He did find a blood clot device and offered it to me. It looked new, but it wasn't the one I originally had. I declined. . I stayed there from late November to early December 2021, for two weeks, for physical therapy. I had a knee replacement at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto. (Excellent place!) The VA Menlo Park Hospitals physical therapy was full, so they found a private place close to home which was this one. Yes Carmel Hills is old, but they keep it clean. The nurses, God bless them, they treat the old people with patience and care. I'd watch as they spoon feed the elderly who cannot feed themselves. God bless these nurses and care givers. The physical therapist I had was also top notch, professional, and knew what she was doing. The cafeteria was excellent. I told them I was allergic to msg, so they created a msg free diet everyday. They have an entertainment hour, I believe daily, where they have someone from the outside come and entertain the patients in the recreation room. They serve drinks and snacks to all the people who attend. So, these parts of the hospital are excellent. . The organized theft was one thing intolerable. The administration tolerates it. The many people I've talked to in this hospital, about the theft, nothing was done. The person who stole my things is still there. Because most of these elderly patients here are mentally and physically docile, they don't know what's going on around them. They don't know if they're being robbed or not. When Letitia took my things, I knew she was taking my things. Only, I thought she would bring them back! There was another person(s) I didn't see because they stayed outside the room, and my room was partitioned from my roommate by a six-foot wall. (I was on the far side) Nevertheless, the thefts are very well planned, and organized. Because after an hour, another person came with a marker, telling me she's going to write my name on each piece of clothing that I have, because thefts occur here. I told her it's too late, because Letitia already left with my clothes and new medical device. . I hope I've portrayed an honest and clear evaluation of this place. If you're planning to bring your loved one here, don't bring anything of value, monetary or sentimental. It has a good chance of being stolen. The administration hasn't responded to me, except for false promises of remittances that I've never received. If this essay sounds scathing, it's because it's the truth. read more

The staff are rude and unprofessional, they are too busy eating on the clock then caring for their residents.

This is a fantastic place. The staff are all positive, responsive, caring, and competent. We interacted with nurses, physical therapists, food service, desk personnel. Uniformly positive. Don't pay attention to the somewhat old facade and drapes!!! They don't matter!! Plus they post all relevant needed information in easy to see public areas. Cannot recommend it highly enough. I have worked in Skilled Nursing Facilities for over 25 years and I have never worked at a facility where the nursing and especially the nursing assistant staff are so remarkable. They are very caring and efficient. A problem at a lot of other facilities are the residents call lights not being answered quickly. Not at Carmel Hills Care Center. Our residents come first and are given the upmost care. At Carmel Hills there is such a positive attitude and atmosphere. It feels like a home away from home. It is a Skilled Nursing Facility but it is NOT a "End of the Road" place. Many of our residents come here for a short time and are rehabilitated in order to return home. We provide Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Of course there are other SNFs you can choose from and I may be bias but I am also being sincere in saying that Carmel Hills Care Center would be the right choice for your loved ones. read more
