I highly recommend Forest Hill rehab/ nursing facility in Pacific Grove. My husband was transferred there from Salinas Valley Memorial hospital in January. We had such a great experience at Forest Hill. . The facility is very nice with view of a well manicured garden. The rooms are large and kept warm and cozy. The staff is kind, caring, compassionate and professional, from Jordan our wonderful case manager and Janet who communicated well and kind enough to order all the necessary equipment needed upon my husband's release. We loved all the wonderful caring nurses, to name a few Josie, Maria, both Isabella's, Nathen, Gordon , Gabie, the friendly PT staff, and all the other kind hardworking staff, house cleaning, kitchen, lundry staff . This place? The nurses are great yet they can only do what they can do. This place sucks and that's being kind. A man walked into my room, a patient, and I was shocked. Food? Sucks. Not fresh, all processed- no fiber. Thank god my partner brings food. I asked for help with call button. Nothing yet the nurse was in another room hearing me call out after 20 minutes. Did not even come in to see what's wrong. There's more- stay far away unless you have no choice. read more

This is for the skilled nursing facility. My mom is there now, having arrived yesterday. So far we've been very disappointed. Her medication list did not arrive from the hospital so she's trying to deal with that. She has a private room but it's tiny, with one chair. She got a tuna sandwich for dinner last night. This morning she vomited all over herself. She rang the bell and waited more than 20 minutes for a response, and when the nurse arrived, the nurse complained about having 9 other patients. My mom is not difficult, but she needed and expected help in a timely manner. Everything on the website is false advertising. read more

We just moved my MIL in. Everything about the experience has been white glove. Desiree Utterback was a joy to work with, from the moment we connected with her on the phone. She was wonderful about leading a virtual tour of the place, as MIL was relocating across country. When you arrive you truly feel like you are on vacation at a historic hotel! Beautifully appointed common areas, and updated units with granite counters, wood-like flooring and VIEWS!!!! Move in day went smooth, Desiree even had a beautiful thoughtful gift basket with some of her favorite treats! The other residents have been kind and welcoming, with invites to dinner and helpful words. This is truly a magnificent place to land. The food in the dinning hall has been fabulous, with meals like Chicken Picata, Rack of Lamb, Scallops... Everything I have tried has been fresh and delicious. The activities are delightful, from bus tours around PG to a showing of the Leon Panetta lecture series. Well located so a fit senior can walk anywhere! As we have chatted with the staff, we have learned that many have been there for years, even decades. They care. They are friendly, kind and accomdating. They took time from the moment we walked in to make us feel welcome. The vibe is vibrant, feels like someplace you will LIVE out your golden years, not a place you go waiting to pass. read more

This is a beautiful place. A well-kept, historic building (not an easy feat) that really feels like home, unlike that 'cold' or 'hospital' feeling you get at other retirement homes. They're even thoughtful about the grounds, keeping them lovely the way you would your own home, but using RAIN WATER (amazing in the drought). Inside the units look nice, with modern kitchens and amenities (a nice fitness center). This is mostly independent living but they also have assisted living and skilled nursing if your loved one will need it, so they can get comfortable there and stay there. A really good place that gives you nice vibes, not only about the living quarters, but also about the people who work there, who are genuine and kind. I feel really confident about Forest Hill. There are some great reviews that are 'not recommended' for some reason. That's why I made the decision to check them out. Those reviewers aren't wrong. read more

I have been coming to the Forest Hill Manor for many many years, as I had two great aunts who lived here. From what I could tell, my great aunts enjoyed living here and were well taken care of, but I was quite young (1970's). When my Mother developed dementia, she realized she could not enjoy her retirement at home as she had planned, and Forest Hill Manor was the place she wanted to go since she remembered her aunt's experience and they have a religious affiliation (my mother is a minister). While we were talking to Forest Hill about my Mother's needs, we were very specific about what her condition was and what her likely care needs would be. We specifically asked where she would be cared for and how. At first all went well because my mother was independent and could care for herself, but as soon as she was move to assisted living it became clear that these people had no idea how to handle someone with dementia. They were frustrated that she was having trouble speaking and communicating with them, and insisted that they only assist when the resident asks for it (huh?). They had no care plan that they could show me, and when they became concerned that she would walk out of the building, their only solution was for me to move her to skilled nursing at twice the monthly fee. This was specifically what we did not want (skilled nursing) because her only medical ailment was dementia - which requires care, checking, explanations, comforting - not medical intervention. When I tried to work with them to determine ways we could resolve the situation, they basically just shrugged their shoulders and said maybe I should move her somewhere else. After they had the large down-payment from my Mother! So, my review is obviously jaded by my specific experience - but I would warn anyone who is looking to live here that they seem to do just fine as long as the resident is aware and able to direct their own needs - but as soon as the person can no longer control their own care (which is why I would think people would need nursing/assistance?) they do not seem to take good care. I also realize now that I didn't see people there with any sort of visible ailments (no wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, or other "unsightly" paraphernalia common among the elderly) in their main building. Even if those people do not require skilled nursing I assume they just put them there to get them out of sight. At the time my Mom was there the Skilled Nursing was maybe 1/3 full, so I suspect when people have actual care needs they realize that Forest Hill can't provide it and they too just take the down payment as a loss and go somewhere they can actually be cared for. I would not recommend spending the money to "buy in" here, and I would not recommend placing a loved one here. read more

It was all about "the feel" when I knew a wanted to make a change in my living situation. Forest Hill is a beautiful historic building with bay views, fine dining, activities, friendly attentive staff and when the time comes knowing they will take care of me gives me peace of mind as I see how others are taken care. Another great feature is the proximity to downtown Pacific Grove, shopping, a movie theater, quaint restaurants and the beach . Forest Hill was the right choice for me! read more

My wife and I moved into a cottage four and a half years ago and have enjoyed the freedom from everyday maintenance of our Monterey home ever since. The move we had been dreading was made easy by the free move-in assistance crew that was apart of our Forest Hill contract. They packed in our old home, and unpacked into the same furniture in our new apartment. Perhaps the greatest benefit living here comes from the sense of family or community we enjoy with both other residents AND the staff! Over the years these extended relationships are vital to our continued happiness and enjoyment of life. When our family comes for a visit, they often stay with us in our apartment, and often enjoy the fine dinning offered by our chef. read more

The decision to place a loved one in s senior care facility is not an easy one. And choosing the best facility for your loved one is just as difficult. I have been through this twice in the last few years with my mother and then my father, and in both cases Forest Hill was the choice. I have been very pleased with the care for both my parents provided by Forest Hill. My mother suffered from Parkinsons disease and stayed at Forest Hill's skilled nursing facility for about 18 months before she passed away. She received excellent care and support from the entire skilled nursing staff. As her condition worsened, she suffered from dementia as well as physical debilitation that left her in need of near-constant care. Forest Hill accommodated all her needs, including pureeing all of her food so she could swallow and providing individual feeding at every meal. My father currently lives in the independent living part of Forest Hill. I visit my father every two weeks or so, and regularly share meals with my dad in the main dining room. First of all, I can say that the food is delicious, nutritious, and plentiful. All the residents I've spoken to agree and rave about the food. Contrary to the statements from another review, I see residents in the main dining hall walk on their own as well as use wheel chairs, walkers, canes, and even oxygen tanks. Forest Hill seems to accommodate all of them and provide the right level of care and living situation depending on the needs of the individual. I looked very carefully at other senior care facilities in the Monterey Peninsula and Forest Hill came out on top. And three years later Forest Hill is still on top. I highly recommend Forest Hill. read more

The minute my dad walked into Forest Hill he loved it. The building is lovely and well kept. The staff is exceedingly kind; from the first moment my parents moved it, everyone there knew their names. the residents are so friendly and invited my folks to come and sit with them at meals, the staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The dining room has high ceilings and large windows and serves the most wonderful food. My mother enjoyed the afternoon movies, the sing-a-longs, and exercise classes, the evening lectures, and the special concerts. When my Dad became ill, he was moved to Skilled Nursing, and received such loving care from the wonderful CNAs and nurses. He particularly enjoyed Roberto, Gerard, and Garry taking care of him. They were gentle and caring. When my Mom needed additional care she moved to Assisted Living under the guidance of Vickie Zufelt and her incredible, patient, loving nursing staff. I would sit with my Mom in her room, and hear the gentleness in the voices of the staff there. Mom particularly enjoyed getting hugs from Vickie, and help with her daily living from Arlie, Rita, Erin, and Samantha. The staff worked very closely as it became time to move my parents from Independent to Assisted Living and on to Skilled Nursing. They are skilled professionals who sat with me and explained the changes that were happening with my parents, and their need for additional care. I was so happy to have them there to coach me so that we did not keep either of them in Independent Living longer than was working for them. read more

I have become familiar with Forest Hill as I was asked to visit with a member of the local congregation of our faith. This sister in the faith is quite advanced in age and has outlived all of her family members. At Forest Hill for 15 years, she has found family in neighbors and staff. I have been visiting with her for the last 5 years. For the first 4 years she lived in her own apartment, furnished with her own possessions, pursuing her own personal interests. She likes crafts. She met with her friends to enjoy meals taken in the dining room. There have been times that I was invited to join them and enjoyed an excellent dinner. At times I have taken her out to appointments for medical care, on other occasions I know that she has used the bus that Forest Hill provides. About a year ago it became obvious that her care needs were increasing. She was always involved in the discussions about her care and the staff always has listened to her concerns and desires about her needs. While the need for more care was not an easy decision, it was ultimately her decision and she now receives care in the Health Center. She still sees her friends, she still pursues the things she is interested in, she still enjoys the meals, and she has a wonderful, caring staff of nurses to help. At some point in the future I may not have the opportunity to visit her and Forest Hill anymore, but for now I look forward to my monthly visits. read more

My wife and I have lived at Forest Hill for seven years. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here and have absolutely no regrets in having moved in from our home in Pacific Grove. The care by staff, the food in our dining room, the accommodations in our apartment and medical care could not possibly be better. Forest Hill is legally licensed by the State of California and consistently has the highest ratings attainable from State and Federal oversight boards. I am quite satisfied that our Board of Trustees, all serving without pay, makes sure that we get our money's worth and that management is paid appropriate to their level of responsibility and performance. Our turnover of staff is less than would be expected of such a facility. The fact that we have many long term staff, (up to 32 years), at all levels speaks well for staff satisfaction. Finally, I have worked closely with management on a number of occasions in their efforts to constantly improve the already fine services that they provide. We are lucky to have the high level of competence, experience and concern for residents that is demonstrated daily. read more

My mother moved into Forest Hill four years ago and it was the best decision she made for her retirement years. At Forest Hill mom enjoyed making new friends, taking her daily walk around the neighborhood, attending the many social activities, and eating delicious dinners. She was able to live independently for a year and a half and then began falling and forgetting to take her medicines. The family decided to move her to the assisted living floor and this was another perfect decision for her health and safety. On the assisted living floor, mom has assistants and nurses taking care of her many needs around the clock. The family has been very happy with the living arrangements and care mom receives at Forest Hill. Our only regret is that mom did not decide to move into Forest Hill sooner! read more

While in Assisted Living, Vickie Zufelt and the staff provided mother with the type of care needed and desired, ensuring she was well taken care of and her needs accommodated. We visited often, and Forest Hill Manor was always a clean, well-maintained, welcoming location with the bonus of having dining rooms that served delicious nutritious food. I get out and about while I am visiting "mom" and can say without hesitation that the folks at Forest Hill Retirement go above and beyond in the care of my mother. The staff in Skilled Nursing has intervened on my mother's behalf numerous times and has made a big difference in the quality of her life while residing independently at Forest Hill. As the Director of Skilled Care.............. Vickie Z has made an impression on me that shows how much the staff cares for our aging parents'. While living in the Pacific Northwest and only visiting Pacific Grove several times per year, Vickie has made that difference in my mother's quality of care. The well maintained facilities show attention to every detail in so many areas. This has become Mom's New Home and they have created that hard to find attention in today's busy world. Well Done Vickie and thanks to your staff for the excellent job I have seen during all my recent visits to the area. My "Mom" is lucky to have you on staff.
