The hottest news in Homer Friday was that Carmen's Gelato had opened (along with hilarious video on its Facebook page). I have gone there at least daily since. His flavors are so creative and consistently delicious. Best gelato I have had outside of Italy and rivals that in Italy. I personally love the Salted Caramel with AK Sea Salt, maple brown butter pecan, vanilla bean, and Thai coconut, but I also like the macadamia nut, and am determined to branch out. Glad to know that years later, Carmen's standards haven't diminished. Still the best Gelato I've had in the United States and very much up to European Standards (and I lived in Europe.) Today I tried the Alaska Rose and it was incredible. The flavor was powerful- i let my husband try it and he didn't care for it- he felt like it was like eating a flower. He's so cute my wife ordered the avocado with French vanilla gelato and chocolate gelato she said it was absolutely fantastic. I on the other hand got the limoncello cheesecake fantastic very creamy and lemony just incredible. The service was quick and the lady that took care of me was very nice. Most of the gelatos that we have found in the United States have been poor imitations. We are told the owner of this establishment trained in Italy for several years and it shows. This is the best gelato that we have had outside of Italy and we wish that it was in our own hometown. My favorite so far is the macadamia caramel gelato. Adorable little shop way out on the pier of Homer. Due to Covid they only allow one group of customers in at a time. I ordered their Maple Brown Butter Pecan and my brother tried their vanilla. They've got Belato, bro! What is Bellato? It's Gelato, without dairy. Why is it called Belato? I don't know, bro. I do know that I love Gellato, but I also know that I'm mildly (I can still handle cheese, THANK SCIENCE) lactose intolerant. Sometimes I want ice cream or gellato so much I'll just eat and deal with the uncomfortable cramping later. Here: I don't have to! I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that the Bellato is just as good as the Gellato...but it's close. It's much better than "gluten free" pizza, I'll tell ya that much. I haven't had too much exposure to gelato, but this is by far some of the best I've ever had. Their special of the day was a combination of their blueberry and limoncello cheesecake flavors. I would eventually come to believe that whoever decided on this combo probably deserves a medal... We stacked that up with our choice of pistachio (classic) and Alaskan rose with wild honey (inventive and local). God-freaking-damn. The texture was so fluffy and the flavors were so much better than expected. The pistachio was super nutty and tasted almost like peanut butter. I'll be fighting every fiber of my being not to come back in favor of checking out other stops during my trip. The cherry on top (is that a pun?) was laying my eyes on the cutest puppy that ever did exist. This tiny youngster nibbled away at my fingers as I was petting it. Seems like no one else could resist its charms as it soon became the center of everyone's attention. Oh, you're still here? Yeah, I was done talking about the merits of this stand a while ago. 10/10, would gelato again. Now leave me to go find a puppy adoption clinic. read more

I've had gelato all across Italy, yet this small shop on The Homer Spit gives them a run for their money. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and I still put back a cup of this impeccable treat in a matter of moments. This is going to be one of those really annoying "I've been to Italy so I know gelato" reviews. I have eaten a lot of gelato in Italy and this is the best I've had back in the us. Carmen went to Italy to learn to make gelato and it shows. My easiest gauge of good good gelato is the color of their pistachio (kind of a muddy green it's authentic, bright green means fake). Their pistachio gelato was authentic and fantastic but I think their brown butter maple pecan was even better although they were all great (I tried a lot). The only problem is that there is not much seating. We remedied that by walking around the building and sitting on drift wood on the beach, enjoying the view and our gelato! read more

Ice cream is my favorite thing in the world. We have traveled 44 states in our motorhome and I've tried hundreds of places. Been to Italy. Had it after every meal for 2 weeks. Who would think. A place on the Spit. In Homer. Alaska. I would find a top 5 of all time ice cream (gelato) shop. Silky smooth. Wonderful ingredients. depth of flavor. The salted caramel was so sublime, teasing you with that Alaskan sea salt. The chocolate cherry cheesecake had tart black cherries, thin chocolate pieces and crushed homemade graham cracker. It's absolutely no exaggeration for me to say this gelato changed my life. I stopped by on a whim with a good friend and we basically never looked back. I do frequently enjoyed gelato but this was absolutely the best gelato I have ever tasted. I sampled the Thai coconut which was incredible (especially enjoyed the toasted coconut flakes), but then I tasted the salted caramel. It was nothing short of a religious experience. My friend and I both ordered a medium of the coconut and salted caramel combination and absolutely devoured it on the porch outside, in the sunlight. It took us less than 10 seconds to realize that there was no way we could walk away. With no shame, we walked directly back into the restaurant and order a second medium, this time salted caramel and hazelnut. The texture of this gelato was absolutely indescribable. It is so fluffy, so creamy, and so dang decadent that I sincerely wish I could eat it every single day. It is absolutely worth the trip to Homer, heck even worth the trip to Alaska to experience it. Simple and delicious! I wanted to try their award winning Maple Brown Butter Pecan gelato, but since they rotate flavours daily, it was not available when I dropped by. Instead I sampled the Thai coconut, espresso and hazelnut, and ended up settling for the Thai coconut. The texture was great and the fragrance from the toasted coconut flakes blended in nicely with the base. It was not overly sweet and allowed the natural flavours to shine. Not the best I've had- since we have Bella Gelateria back home, crowned the best gelato in the world, but it did the trick! Craving satisfied! read more
