I was a little disappointed that eyebrow threading was $15 instead of the $7 everyone raved about, but I have to admit that my eyebrows have never looked better. I called the day before to set up an appointment for the next day, came 10 minutes early, and was seated immediately. She did a great job - I feel like it wasn't as painful as it usually is at other places, and she even explained to me how she determined the shape of my brows. More like Carmen's completely mess up their client's hair and not take any accountability for it-ty. This salon butchered my friend's hair. Charged and gave her a "balayage" when she never asked for one. Her hair was completely unblended and she left the salon extremely upset. The owner later herself said that she also "didn't like" how her hair turned out. Then proceeded to blame HER for how terrible her hair turned out and did nothing to rectify the situation. $340 gone and the worst my hair has looked in probably 10 years. I'm genuinely in hysterics about how bad this looks and how much money I spent on this. My boyfriend actually gasped in horror when I got home. I was flat out denied even a partial refund I can't stop crying every time I look at myself. It took me so long to save up to be able to do this and when I called the salon I was told it was my fault because of my hair texture and the original color of my hair. I went to Carmen's for the first time this weekend and am super pleased with my much-needed haircut! My hair is horribly fine and I always just need a basic cut and it was $30, which is super reasonable. I don't generally enjoy getting my hair cut because I tend to not be a small talk kind of girl but Ashourina is a delight and I love that it's a family-owned business. I stumbled upon the family owned salon ten years ago and have been loyal since. Mother and Daughter work the salon primarily and they are both amazing! When I visit I feel like I'm seeing friends and family of my own! Carmen has been cutting my hair and have never steered me in the wrong direction with advise and suggestions... most recently gave me a cut that my sisters have been saying is my best one ever! Ashourina is an eyebrow magician! She brings my face back to life every time! I will grow my brows out for weeks till I am able to see her... no one else can touch them, LOL! I would give no stars if possible. I've been cutting hair for 30+ years and my daughter just got home with the MOST f'd up hair. No shampoo, she didn't even section it. My daughter has long pieces everywhere. I'm in shock that anyone would call themselves a hairstylist after this HORRIFIC hair cut!! I have never left a yelp review before so you know this must of been bad, i came in today to get a blowout with my hair already washed. I was sat down and told my hair was too greasy to have any volume after deep conditioning, when I have been getting consistent blowouts with my current hair routine for a year with no issues. After the blowout my hair was not completely dry and I was told adding very light curls would be an extra 20 dollars?! On the website a price quote for a blowout including wash was priced at 30-45 dollars. I was told it was 65 dollars because of the heaviness of my hair and how long it was even though my hair is bra strap length. After being confused and upset at the price I am blamed that it is my fault that I condition my hair and don't have dry brittle hair like the owners dead frizzy hair. After going to the bathroom for 10 minutes trying to give it some volume I am asked multiple times by the lady if I am almost done and told me to hurry up because they want to close even though they did not close for another 15 minutes. No muss, no fuss kind of place. The ladies seemed nice, threaded my brows quickly and I was outta there! They only allow card for $10 and over so if you get a thread ($7) they force you to do a $3 tip but for their services I would easily pay $10 anywhere else. I have been here several times, and have YET to see Joey Fatone. Has he moved on? (see previous review for reference). Every so often I get nostalgic for my old stomping grounds (and, I've never been threaded anywhere else!) so I popped in here today for a quick brow threading...and voila...no mess, no fuss: 10 minutes later I'm strutting out with much less hair above my eyes. $7 + tip. Can't beat it, and no breakouts or scary skin rippage from bad waxers! Would've liked them a wee bit thicker, but hey...they grow back. It's definitely still an improvement. Easy metered parking right in front, side streets possible, many bus lines (36, 151, etc) plus red line Loyola stop. If you haven't tried threading, I suggest you give it a whirl...less pain, in my humble two-browed opinion. *ps I had a TERRIBLE haircut in college here, I would never let them touch any hair on my head. I can only recommend this salon for eyebrow threading. I do not recommend for waxing! They use some kind of refill roll-on wax gadgets....like Nair roll-on but with wax...totally ineffective and unsanitary! Unfortunately I didn't notice until after the wax that there was a big blond-ish looking pube stuck to the applicator...I'm a brunette and the carpet matches the drapes so that was _not_ my pube!!! Other than that, my eyebrow threading have been fine-though they seem to have different staff each time I go in and have a snit if I try to card the service. read more

I walked in and did not know what to make of the place, the music was bad and strange. It did not look very sanitary. The nail polishes I had never heard of. I checked out this place because my friend worked close by, I was too uncomfortable to even entertain sitting through any services here. Let me start by saying that I will never return to this place again. I used to go to Carmen's all through college at Loyola to get my eyebrows threaded. I lost track of them for a while when they moved locations and happened upon them again this July, at which point I went to get my eyebrows done for a wedding. It was awful. The woman who did mine refused to even out my eyebrows or trim the sides because she wanted them to be "natural." They looked awful, and I had people keep asking me why my eyebrows were uneven for a week. I stayed away for several months, but owing to the fact that they had always previously done a good job, I went back this past Saturday morning to get my eyebrows done for yet another wedding. I told the younger woman who was working there about my horrible experience in July and how I wanted to make sure I didn't get that employee again. Instead of apologizing for my terrible previous experience, she got angry at my and snapped at me that only she and her mother worked there (when I had been there in July, there were multiple people working there, so I have no idea what happened). She then gave me a very rough threading where she didn't bother to pluck out the strays afterwards and didn't bother to put anything on to soothe the skin. She was so rough that I now have a patch of scraped, scabbing skin below my left eyebrow. And they are slightly uneven. I beg you all not to support this business. If I could leave no stars I absolutely would. They deserve to be run out of business for treating a customer with such a complete lack of respect. read more

I walked in by chance, attracted by the "7.00 eyebrow threading" sign in the window. I usually get my eyebrows threaded at a different place, but thought I'd try something new, and $7.00 is a deal, considering that the standard eyebrow waxing price is $15+. I was pleasantly surprised after they threaded them. The shape they did was impeccable, and it actually did not hurt nearly as much as other places I've gotten my brows threaded at. I am a regular eyebrow customer there now, and have never been disappointed with anything. I've had many different employees there do them, and they are all good, but I think the guy (I don't remember his name!) is the best. I must say, this is not your typical pretentious salon. It is obvious that it is family-run, and I think that really contributes to the friendly atmosphere. They play ethnic music (I think it is Assyrian) which contributes to the laid-back atmosphere. Carmen is a wonderful, personable lady. She knows about customer service and calls me by my name. She even offered me some pizza she bought. However, I get home from my full highlight (I used a coupon on the advertisement, which said it was $55...they charged me $65), and I notice there is a half inch of roots. I mean, it looks like I haven't gotten highlights in a month when I got them...yesterday. I really wanted to be proud of Carmen's work as I think she is a great lady, but the highlights were not well done at all. I went there for only a shampoo blow out and was shocked at the price. $35. I normally only pay $25 anywhere else I go. To get it flat Ironed was an extra $5. I had an interview the next day so I was kind of stuck. The girl did a good job, but like other posters have noted, the place just looks dirty and generally unkempt. The only reason I had anything done there is because I am new to Chicago, and I needed to be together for an interview -- and I always like how my hair is done (flat ironed) when someone else does it for me. I've only gotten my eyebrows threaded at Carmen's. I cannot praise my artist Ashrina enough for sculpting my eyebrows. She has worked with me through the good and the bad. When I couldn't get to Carmen's, I often made the mistake of going somewhere else and my eyebrows always ended up being a mess. I would walk in and Ashrina would say "oh what happened" all I could do was put my head down in shame LOL. She is quick, but she also takes her time when your eyebrows are in need of some TLC. Thanks to Ashrina, my eyebrows are full and have the natural shape I've always wanted. On top of that, who can complain about great eyebrows for $7/per month? I couldn't ask for anything more. She and her father (I think) were always friendly. We would chat it up about the weather and the economy. Great people. read more

So, pretty much, my eyebrows had gotten completely out of control. I looked like Burt from Sesame Street. I fail at tweezing my own brows and I don't really care for waxing, so I decided to try threading at Carmens. I still don't understand how threading works, to be honest. Basically these cotton threads are dragged around your brows and the hair comes out. I'm good at scientific explanations. Anyway, I walked in and I said that I was in for a brow threading. I was immediately sat in a chair and leaned back. I told the threader that I didn't want thin brows - I just wanted to clean the current ones up. There was very little chit chat, she went right to business. I will say - it burns a bit. However, it was over in 2-3 minutes which was very tolerable. No pain no gain. The price was 7 bucks before tip and I have 2 beautifully sculpted brows. I couldn't ask for better looking brows, I love them! I will definitely be back. The price is right and it's so much less of a pain in the ass than waxing. read more

I had the one and only Carmen cut my hair today. It turned out great, she's got some wonderful skills, and I just really enjoy my cut in general. However this place is a bit odd. I walked in and immediately another girl tried to get me to get my eyebrows threaded. Then she wanted to wash my hair, and I had just washed my hair (wasn't expecting to get a hair cut today) and so I declined. The place is awkward in a lot of ways, I didn't quite feel comfortable there. It also cost more than I was expecting. $25 dollars for only a cut. $10 extra dollars for it styled! geez! So I won't be going back even though I do like my haircut. read more

I love Carmens!! I have been going for years, but just like any other some employees are better than others. For hair I always go with Carmen, she is GREAT!! Her daughter, whose name I'd butcher, also does a decent job as well. I first starting going to Carmens in 2002 only for eyebrow threading, they do a great job and I am very particular. First of all, Carmen and her family (her husband works the front desk and her daughter is another hairdresser) are incredibly kind. It seems like they all really enjoy their adorable little salon and they treat their customers very well. Carmen took the time to LISTEN to what I wanted, which I appreciate very much. Got a few inches off of my hair and my brows threaded. It was quick, efficient, and just what I wanted. And it is so affordable! They moved down the street to Pratt and Sheridan (from Arthur and Sheridan previously) and I thought i would give them a second chance thinking that the old management would no longer be in charge. When I went in to make an appointment I didn't see anyone from the old salon. Only Carmen and her daughter were present. I made the appointment for 3/30/16. Carmen cut my hair and blow dried it. It looked great and the cut grew out beautifully. They changed me $35 and I gave a $15 tip for a total of $50. Only Carmen and her daughter were present again. I called to make my second appointment day before yesterday but no one picked up so I left a message. A man called back the next day and made the appointment for 8/19/16. So I went in today, I saw the same old guy from the previous location! Immediately I asked how much they would charge me for the cut and blow dry (keeping in mind my last experience) and he said $45! So I asked Carmen why its more than it was a few months ago and he wouldn't let her talk and started getting rude and unprofessional with me. Other customers were there but he didn't care. I've figured out that the root of their problem is their male relative who comes in on some days and causes the problems. I think the women are too afraid to talk back to him. Its a shame that I'm not going back because I think the women who do the actual work are wonderful. The idiotic old man is crazy! Beware of any place that doesn't list its prices because they can't be held accountable from appointment to appointment. This is why the salon keeps closing down. People want consistency and transparency. read more

I've been here multiple times only to get my eyebrows threaded. They always do a fantastic job. They all seem to listen to what I had to say about how I wanted them done. I've only had to wait maybe once for like 5 minutes, every other time, I can just walk right in a get seated no matter what. For only $7+$3tip, I can't find a better deal anywhere else! I just left Carmen's. I'm African American and I'm growing out my perm so I went there to get my ends trimmed. I told Dolly I needed less than an inch cut off all round to get rid of the split ends and I wanted her to cut it DRY. She totally understood, cut the bare minimum (being as I HATE seeing any length cut off of my hair) and was done in 15 minutes. LOVE! I'll be back in 6 weeks to maintain this natural hair of mine. Ashourina does an amazing job on hair. I have thick, wavy hair that, on occasion, locks when it's wet. She knows exactly how to cut it so it looks sleek and sexy. And seriously, for the price? You just can't beat it. They also do threading which is also good. I'm giving 3 stars for their nail services. I had a mani done here once and that was absolutely the last time. I left with sore fingers and worried that I'd develop an infection from repeated deep-clipping of my cuticles. Also, the paint job was only so-so. So, go for the hair and threading and you'll be a happy camper. Never get your nails done here, you'll be sorry if you do. read more

I have only gotten my eyebrows done here so I can't critique the other services. I initially did the threading, but then moved onto the waxing. I am a real wuss when it comes to pain around my face and I just decided the fewer times things were ripped from my eye are the better! I ave been happy for the most part. If anything they can be on the thin side, but I feel like for the price you can't get that picky. I do have to mention that their sales techniques are lacking. Telling me what I need in order to look better or that my nails look bad as I am signing the receipt or that my eyebrows are too light, just isn't going to get me to spend more time with you! Went for threading service and it was great and affordable. I didn't stay long, but the overall vibe was down to earth, relaxed, and knowledgable. Walked in for a hair trim and eyebrow threading today. They were very accommodating and I was out in twenty minutes. Carmen trimmed my hair exactly the way I asked her to. She rightfully scolded me a little for waiting so long between trims. Thing is, salons make me nervous because more often than not, I leave with a very different cut than I had asked for. I'm sure many women feel my pain there. Carmen then sent me over to another woman to thread my eyebrows. The second thing I said after "Hello." Was "I don't want skinny eyebrows. Just a clean up, please." I now have one good eyebrow, and one skinny crooked eyebrow. She clearly slipped on the inner part of my right eyebrow. There's a rather noticeable dip. I pointed this out before leaving and was told "That's just how your eyebrows are." Nope. My eyebrows are just fine. I've been getting my eyebrows threaded for three years. I didn't argue since she certainly couldn't put my eyebrow back for me. Only option now is to fill it in with pencil until it grows back and pluck all the little hairs that were still left behind myself. All in all, the salon is designed nicely and the prices are reasonable. I'd return to Carmen for another trim, but it will be a while before I let anyone else near my eyebrows. read more

This place is a joke. I went there to get my eyebrows done and came in to find about seven women sitting around. Obviously business is slow. The man who seemed to be in charge quickly barked orders to one woman who asked me what I'd like. I told her my eye brows which the sign advertised as being $7. She asked if I'd like them waxed or threaded and I said waxed. Once she was finished I went to pay only to find out that it was $12. When I explained that the sign said $7 the gentleman's response was, "That's not correct. It's $12." When I told him that I felt that was dishonest, he told me that was fine, it was still $12. I went there for a mani/pedi and will not be back. It was not clean and there were flies circling my head the entire time. The lady who did my pedicure made 2 of my toes bleed and did not even exfoliate the bottom of my feet. The manicure lady made one of my fingers bleed and it was overall just not good. i must start by saying i exclusively go to carmen's for my eyebrows. they are expert threaders, and i trust them wholeheartedly with my prominent brows. today i went for a haircut as well. school's starting soon, and i figure i should at least be somewhat groomed... and although i'm happy with the result (i have pretty simple, long, straight hair), i had to fight to not get layers put in. it went something like this. S: you like layers? J: no, they don't really work for me. S: but they look nice. J: they do when you actually do your hair. S: but you just need to blowdry and flat iron. J: i don't do either. S: it doesn't take very long. J: neither does air drying. S: so you want layers? J: no, thank you. S: just a few in back? J: no, that's okay.
