Fast, no-frills, you might not get exactly what you want, but you'll walk out looking good ‍. I got highlights and a cut, it wasn't exact to the reference (but I've also paid way more for completely of-the-mark jobs at other "fancy" places, so this was a pretty solid). Everyone I saw come in during my visit walked out with good cuts. I brought my boyfriend a few days later, he liked it too. I personally prefer not talking much during a cut, but if you're looking for a bunch of conversation this isn't really that kinda place. read more

One of the worst salon experiences I've ever had. To begin, Shiva never asked my name and the whole time I was in there she barely talked at all, the whole thing was very silent and uncomfortable. The haircut she gave me was nothing like the picture I showed her, I ended up having to fix my bangs myself after I went home. The only reason I'm giving her two stars instead of one is because she did a nice job threading my eyebrows. I have attached pics of the reference photo and my result, keep in mind that my hair normally has a wavy/curly texture but the way she styled it made it completely straight. I have thin, straight hair best worn in a bob cut. It shows every scissors mark. Shiva is amazing and makes my hair look great every time. I live close by this small beauty salon and use it as my place to get a quick inexpensive haircut. The first time I came in it was after a long stretch of not having having had my hair cut. I also had had a month long period of only having two days off, so I was crazy tired and it didn't want to travel much to get my hair done. Shiva was was so close that it was no brainer and with a four star average that was the icing on the cake for me to decide to give this salon a whirl. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. They did me so dirty here. Walked in last minute for a 1 inch trim on my long hair I've been growing out for years. This man (sweaty and stinky) goes in dry with bent shears and hacks off half of my hair leaving me with a MULLET! After many unsuccessful at-home hair dye jobs, I decided to get my hair done at a salon. I've never been to Shiva before but their prices are very reasonable for one-process color and they're not too far from Edgewater. I wanted to darken my black hair even more to a blue black. Nothing fussy. For some reason, other salons didn't have that color. Anyway, Shiva did and I booked an appointment. Shiva, the owner, did my hair and it didn't take too long, about an hour and a half. She was a very sweet and interesting lady. My hair didn't have strong blue accents, but I think that's fine. It would've looked too punk. It was definitely a bit darker. My hair wasn't crunchy or damaged. She blow dried my hair (other salons charged for this). I was happy with my color. As a model, I've taken photos since then and I've noticed the richness of the color in the images. It complements my pale complexion very well. Like Snow White! If you want a hair dye job for a reasonable price and in a casual environment, check out Shiva. She does a really great job! read more

Came in for eyebrow threading ($7) and also asked about getting a blow out/hair straightening. They didn't give me any information about their services and how much that would be, instead first tried offering to wash my hair (um, no thanks) and then sitting me down in a chair to do something--lord knows what for lord knows how much--to my hair. I'm sorry, but wtf? Where's your pricing list? Isn't that a really really simple question? Their guy ended up consulting with Shiva, the owner, and then saying it'd be $15 for the blow out so I thought I'd try it. They did not answer my question of what it would look like at the end (super straight? curly at the ends? volume?). He also convinced me to trim the ends (another $10) which I knew I needed but was hesitant to let him do. Well, let's just say that the trim was weird (he cut strands kind of at random); it came out odd looking and kind of lopsided and the blow-out made my hair flat on top, weirdly curl around my face, and look strangely greasy from whatever product he used. Shiva tried to do something else to 'fix' it by separating my front long bangs and teasing the back to give it a little lift (hello, early 90s)--but that looked even worse! The main reason I came in--for threading-- was done in a rush because they played with my hair so long (2 hours!), and it was painful and came out crooked. I walked away $38 poorer ($32 for cut, style, and threading, plus $6 tip) and looking so crazy I had to spend another hour fixing it before going out for NYE. Thanks, Shiva. read more

I am the person guilty of going once every few YEARS for a trim. This morning I got my first cut in 2 years and Ali did an amazing job! After some light scolding (I get this all the time no mater where I go lol) and quick discussion on how much he would have to snip, he got to work. When I left I had some of the best layers I have had since my favorite stylist moved back to her home country 15 years ago; this is why I don't get my hair cut often. Now, I will for sure make sure I go every 6 months for a trim! And to think, this cute little salon is right down the street from me! Five stars for sure! Thanks for giving my hair life again!! first of all, shiva (the owner) is an angel. i came to get my haircut done by her and she was very upfront on what would look good with my hair texture and face frame. she is very passionate and works quick, efficient, and amazing. After doing a ton of research, i decided to come here to get my eyebrows microbladed. I know, i know-- that's a huge risk and not everyone should be trusted with a needle and ink to your face-- especially your eyebrows. shiva is middle eastern and after seeing the miracle she had done to her previous clients, i knew i could trust her and WOW. i literally look like a new person. she was so so SO knowledgeable about things like what products to use so your eyebrows don't go grey in a few years (that'll happen with a lot of places) to the aftercare of it all. micro blading has definitely changed my life and everyone that sees my new eyebrows compliments me on how natural and great they look. IN ADDITION TO HER TALENT, the prices are SO affordable. getting my eyebrows microbladed at any other place would have cost me $700+ and she only does it for $250. i highly recommend coming to her. don't let the bad reviews of one person prevent you from coming to this family-owned, knowledgeable place. do your research, look on her instagram and come to someone who is passionate, HONEST (because let's be honest-- not all of us look good in bangs and sometimes we just need someone to let us know that we don't lol), and KNOWLEDGEABLE place. i love shiva and i will definitely be recommending her to everyone that crosses my path. i'll post pictures of my eyebrows before and after! read more

Loved this place! I called like at 12:15 and said that I needed to dye my hair, the lady said they didn't have any appointments. I said I would just go somewhere else (not in a snooty way, but because I had to get my hair done for a photo shoot the next day). The lady told me to just stop by, so I did. I came in, and Shiva seen me right away. (Even though she was working on other clients). I told her I needed my whole hair dyed- I was a blonde, that went back to my natural black hair at another salon, and it was now starting to turn a coppery dark brown (yuck). She confirmed with me that the hair color was much lighter than my natural dark locks. When she put on the hair dye, she massaged it through my scalp- (Which is awesome! I think this helps making the color actually get in ever strand). I waited in a comfy chair for like 40 minutes, she checked it, washed it out, and asked me if I wanted it blow dried and styled for an additional $15. I said no thank you. But she ended up blow drying it a little bit anyway, making sure the color was how I wanted it. She did such a great job! I will be returning here in the future. I think it cost around $48? It was a few months ago, so I can't remember the exact price. But it's worth it! Yeah, it's street parking, but I was able to find a spot that I didn't have to pay for (as it was by residential apartments). Good, quick salon. Definitely recommend it! read more

UNBELIEVABLE! I went back here yesterday for a cuir and lowlights. This time I saw Shiva because of the reviews for her color work. I have the thinnest, finest hair on the planet and was hoping to add some volume with lowlights and a good cut. I could Not Believe what a great job she did, for $70! I've had 2 friends who have both did celeb hair for TV and film. I can't afford Oak St. Salons anymore. Neither have ever hidden my problem as well as Shiva, and these guys are no slouches. And btw, I saw a kind of moppy haired guy come in who sat in Ali's chair behind me. This guy looked fantastic when he left. Hard to believe it was the same guy. I've told my son about this place. *UPDATES* to say I've been back twice. Once to see Ali again and once with Shiva herself. All beautiful haircuts. I had a great experience at Shiva with the stylist named Ali. I am so thankful for a local place to support. The haircut itself is beautiful. After reading reviews, asked Ali for a trim and layers and then just let him do whatever he wanted. After years of paying for cheap cuts done by students or at highly branded and sales-y type salons, Shiva was a breath of fresh air. It felt like no-frllls family time, and an honest place of business. They don't push products on you and many of their products are even found at CVS. Ali said his home country is more fashionable than we are here so if anyone is looking for a funky/unique haircut you should totally go and ask him to just have fun. read more

In absence of my regular hair stylist I went to Shiva salon and had my hair colored and cut by Shiva. I loved the results and came back with my mom to get manicures and a cut for her. The manicurist is very harsh, I had two fingers bleeding and my mom had three. Our fingers hurt for a couple of days, but thank goodness they are heeling fine. I would not be concerned if not for the fact that she is using same instruments for everyone. I was hoping to impress my mom since this was her first time getting a manicure and unfortunately it wasn't a good experience for her. I would recommend to ask for Shiva if you are looking to get a nice haircut and color and go to a nail salon for professional and gentle mani/pedi. Best threading in the city and Shiva never disappoints! I'm very specific about my arch. When I first went in, I explained what I wanted and Shiva knocked it out w/o a problem. Now, I go there so often I just sit down and she knows what to do. Ali, the gentleman that works there, knows exactly how to cut my hair so it looks sleek and sexy. Shiva also does amazing hair and is THE person to see for styling before a big night out. The salon is also super clean, which is really important to me. They offer beverages while you're waiting which makes me feel like my business is important. I never feel like I'm just a tip waiting to be served. My husband also likes getting his hair cut here. Lovely! I have been longing for a good eyebrow thread ever since moving from the south side to the north side of Chicago. I have tried two local spots that were overpriced and had completely butchered my eyebrows. I gave up hope for the north side and went back to my old threading salon. I wasted 5-10 dollars of gas on top of my ten dollar thread on Chicago's south side. Today I grew lazy and desperate I walked into Shiva's worried and left ecstatic! She was absolutely lovely and cautious. She soothed my sensitive skin with cool water upon my wishes and would occasionally blow on my eyebrows when they were turning red. How sweet! My eyebrows are perfectly mirrored against each other not too thick, not too thin. A brow is 7 and a lip is 5. I am overwhelmed with joy! I will be back for more! read more

I have been looking for a stylist since moving to Chicago in April. I've met some incredibly nice stylists, but Shiva takes the cake! I walked in around noon today (Wednesday) without an appointment just as Shiva was finishing up with another client. I waited only 10 minutes before she ushered me into her chair and began asking questions about what I wanted. I know what I *want* my hair to look like, but I will readily admit that I am not an expert. Shiva listened to me, and then explained what she thought would work best for what I envisioned...and she didn't even scold me when I sheepishly confessed having cut my own bangs in a moment of frustration. She took charge of my cut, and it looks better than it has in ages! She also gave me advice about color, but again was not at all judgmental about the fact that I'd done it myself (she really wanted to know the number of the color I used). The cut cost $25.00 - unheard of!! I don't remember the last time I paid less than $60! I was so excited and pleased, I decided to have my eyebrows threaded for the first time, and the woman who did it was wonderful (I should have written down her name...next time!). It hurt a little, and made me sneeze, but my brows look amazing, and all for $10.00 ($7.00 + tip). As I was leaving, the infamous Ali introduced himself and said next time he'd cut my hair! I've gone here many times for eyebrow threading/waxing and it's been great, until a couple of days ago. The two ladies who work here are wonderful. The man who works here...eesh. I wanted the side of my head shaved and a sideswept bang trim. Head shaved? Perfect. On the bangs...he decided to go rogue and cut my hair in a way HE thought "fashionable" and "stylish" when I wanted a simple, no-fuss trim. He ended up giving me lopsided, Bettie Page/Yolandi Visser bangs (VERY short) and made no apologies that he overruled what I wanted. I was so upset I stormed out without paying, which I've never had to do anywhere else. I am beyond embarrassed by this unflattering haircut. I can't ever come back here again! read more

OH what to say about Shiva and her staff. They are just amazing. My husband started going to Ali because he is pretty particular about this hair. In the four years we've been in the city, Ali is the first person to actually know how to do my husband's hair correctly and he is so fast with those scissors! Ali also did our daughter's first haircut and he was awesome. We didn't need any fancy salon just someone to keep her entertained and he was awesome. He talked to her, gave her chocolate and sang to her while he was doing her hair. He even let me take pictures afterwards. Shiva did my hair a few months back (time for another appointment, I know) and she was amazing. Not only did she stay past closing time and let me keep my daughter there as my husbands job took him a couple more hours than expected to get home, but she also did the best full highlights job I have had in years. She even gave me a super cheap cut that still looks beautiful and I get compliments all the time. Beyond that Shiva also recommended products that work wonders and are actually within my price point which is always a seller for me than buying really expensive stuff I will feel guilty using. The gentleman gave me a bad haircut. He never once asked me how short he just went at it with scissors and maybe chopped enough to look like I had hair cut But it wasn't what I wanted. Or asked for. I specifically said chop it all off and give me a short haircut, I walked out with basically almost the same hairdo except he trimmed the sides which by the way he left holes in the back. I ended up going to a salon in Andersonville and they looked at the dye job and said it had to have been a box dye that they used here :( I would NOT recommend this place for hair coloring!
