I have been hearing about these infamous cheesesteaks and hoagies and had to make my way over. A friend of mine split a cheesesteak and an Italian. Walking in your hit with a family vibe and just smell the vinegar and onions in the air... it is divine. The place was really clean and you could tell they just renovated or added. The staff were really great and for that reason I will be going back. I took a star away because the cheesesteak just wasn't good. Very wet and just saturated the roll and it had cheap wiz which looked like water. Great flavor but that's all for the steak. However, the Italian was terrific. i was in the area on 1/13/26 and thought i would stop in and get a sandwich to go. i live about 45 miles away. i ordered a turkey/swiss hoagie no onions and hot pepper. i got home and sat down to eat this sandwich. i opened it up and it was not what i ordered. it had more lettuce on it than meat. no peppers and it did not taste good at all. this sandwich was $18.00. what a G/D rip off. i could have bought 2 at wawa for that price and got what i wanted. i will never go back again. totally unacceptable. i live too far away to go back and bitch. it has not been the same since the owner bought out del Bunos and Carmen's and combined the 2. We go here every single time we are in New Jersey (which isn't often enough)... their Italian Subs are amazing! The bread (from Del Buono's Bakery) is to die for... and they stuff it with the most delicious deli meats,fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, herbs, oil & vinegar, and they never judge me for adding mayonnaise and spicy mustard to mine (at least not that I know of... haha)! Really good, but also a treat. I typically do not like to spend $25 on sub sandwiches or hoagies. But why not today? I enjoyed my Italian as is. They mixed up my order a bit, but what an easy fix. Since this was just lunch, I probably need to remember to get one and share it. This hoagie was huge. Definitely big enough to share unless of course you carry a big appetite. My order was done on time and while they appeared super busy, their customer service remained on point. There was a new entrance a door over on the Main street with a sign that says 'under construction' at the original door in the corner. There was much more space than recalled in the newer space. Awhile back my boyfriend and I found a list of top 50 South Jersey foods to try. We've been working our way through it and today was Carmen's Deli! The list has Rose's Special which is a hoagie with domestic and sharp provolone, prosciutto, sopressata, capicola, roasted reds, onions etc. We took the tomatoes off, they are normally included. Now I'm not a hoagie girl, but I can appreciate a good one when I see it and WOW this one is good! First of all, it's huge! Was enough for me and my boyfriend to split. The flavors were DELICIOUS! Not only did all the meats and cheeses blend so well, but the roasted reds and oil/oregano added so much flavor. The meat was so fresh and the Del Buono roll was perfect. I need to start this one by saying that I am well aware you only get a certain amount of calories in a day... and YOU NEED TO MAKE THEM COUNT. I refuse to spend them on mediocre food; they need to be put towards things that make your mouth water... and Carmen's isn't it. But Somerdale Cold Cuts is... so off we went there instead, and you should too. But here's the detailed run down: Somerdale Cold Cuts is our go to joint, because I don't think there's much else in the world that can be better, but today I was on the hunt to see what else the area has to offer in terms of sandwhiches. We found Carmen's from the dozens of reviews praising their product. But right off the bat, our experience was in the shitter. Service: We ordered two sandwhiches and then stood there for about 15/20 minutes when two older women looked at eachother and said, "what the hell do they want?" Uhm OUR SANDWHICHES MAYBE? So they literally took our order and then forgot to make them??? We were the only ones in there... I'm confused and that's just rude to say. Food: Well besides the fact that I asked for oil and vinegar and only got vinegar (which I could barely taste as well) ((and it only says vinegar on the receipt too, even though I always stress the oil and vinegar)), it was meh. The only thing they got is that they're big??? Because the bread is tough and I shouldn't have to wrestle with the dough, I don't care what "renowned" bakery they're from. And the chicken wrap my husband order was so over cooked he took the chicken out and ate the cheese and tomatoes. SO, I'm pretty pissed that I spent the time and money to come out here and was not treated as a paying customer, but more of a burden AND the fact that they DO NOT have the best in South NJ, but they think they do hence the attitudes I guess. This place had been consistently good for years... I'm not sure what happened. The inside mirrors what used to be. But what is bought had not been up to par for awhile... As I mentioned, oven roasted turkey, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar on a @del_buonos_nj roll. Doesn't get much simpler and better than that for a hoagie. Ordered a breakfast sandwich with egg whites yesterday. All good. Place a order for two sandwiches today made the same way as I do not eat traditional eggs. Not only was I greeted by the nastiest counter woman who not only hung up on me the first time I called, she took my order with my egg white request when I called back. Apparently, they don't do egg whites when I just had this sandwich yesterday. ‍When I checked my order before departure it was completely wrong and no one on site was able to correct it. Cook shows up, cannot refund me $15 for the 2 sandwiches and gives me the managers number. Manager tells me the same story and will reverse the charge later today. I haven't been in there for over a year. Place is real clean and there were two ladies o ev was making the sandwiches & the other I was working the front desk. I ordered an Italian hoagie extra-large with extra onions, and no oregano. Extra onions on your side and hot peppers in which they charge a nominal fee that was acceptable and that everybody else charges. I got that sandwich home and I took one look at it and I died with Ecstasy - best looking & delicious and it tasted fresh & perfect. My husband and I split it and we had the best Hoagie that we have had in a long long time.. I had a bad experience before with their cooked food and I'm not sure if that has improved but I can absolutely recommend you running in there right now and getting one of their delicious Hoagies when those two ladies are there because that one lady in the back with a long gray / blind hair really knows how to make a hoagie. Last the last couple times they messed up my order. I went by the other day, picked up 2 sandwiches and was on my way. When we opened up our sandwiches, both were wrong. This place has a reputation for great hoagies. You get a reputation by doing something consistently for a significant period of time. I would, therefore, add that Carmen's has a reputation for screwing up orders. Consistently. Visit #1: They gave us the wrong bag, which we discovered at home...20 minutes away. After a long ride back to get the right bag, they were VERY nice, and spun tales of how much they pride themselves on doing things right, and that something like THIS would never happen again. And they were right. We got the right bag on Visits # 2 and #3...but they had messed up the orders in more ways than I can count. Thankfully, we discovered and remedied their errors then and there...without the nasty 20 minute drive back. I have been going to Carmines since I was in high school in the 80's. After moving out of the area for several years, I made it a point to revisit this before I got on the NJ Turnpike to head home. This place has not changed one bit, and that is great! I was surprised to see that they where on FoodTV for their cheesesteaks, as this is a new offering to their menu. My favorite sandwich here is the Rosa's Special Scillian - named after the owners mother (and original owner). It has Slicing Provolone, Hot Capicola, Prosciutto, Sopressata, Roast Peppers, Tomato, Onion, Oregano, Sharp Provolon and Oil - and is about the best sandwhich you will get this side of the Mason-Dixon line. I usually get my steak with some mayo and onions - not sure why I didn't specify this time but their regular configuration worked fine for me (steak/cheese). What in God's name was going on with this place today!? First off it was immediate chaos, there was a sweet but incapable boy on the register. Struggled to get an order or 2 subs correct and then ended up never entering it in so we stood around waiting for nothing. He seemed like he was really high. It was a really tight space too and I had a migraine on top of it all. I could tell the other customer(s) were a bit annoyed and felt put off. Then when they realized our order never went through, a woman threw our sandwiches together and my buffalo chicken was inedible garbage. It was just flavorless slop on disgustingly soggy bread that kept falling apart as I attempted to eat it. I ended up just leaving the other half on the ground hoping a homeless person would find it. There was no restroom, some of the shelves were empty and the drop ceiling was falling apart in some areas. My visit today makes me ask, "How is this place allowed to be open?" This deli has won many awards and has even been on TV for their hoagies. It is a really good hoagie but I feel like I would not come here often and would definitely not go out of my way. I purchased the Italian hoagie and shared, definitely too big to eat by yourself. It was loaded with meat and cheese the lettuce was nicely shredded and crisp. A perfect drizzle of oil and vinegar and a sprinkle of spicy seasoning. It was a good hoagie, but not the best. The most important part of a hoagie for me is the bread. The bread was fresh and soft, however I like mine a tad more crusty to hold up the oil and vinegar. If you are in need of a hoagie and are in the area definitely stop in. The service is 5 star. This place has the best hoagies around! All the ingredients are extremely fresh. They layer it thickly with meat & cheese - no lettuce space filling here. Another thing that strikes me is their tomatoes; you can definitely tell they are from Jersey! Bright red and firm, better than what you find in a grocery store. I also appreciate the drink selection. 100% natural Tradewinds brand bottled ice tea. No artificial sweeteners, thank you! They also have deli salads (potato, etc.) and the standard variety of chips. There is a barrel you can fish pickles out of as well. The staff is efficient but friendly. They are a little pricey - $7.50 for a mixed cheese hoagie. With potato salad & tea, came to about $11. My family (grandmom, aunt, parents) have been going to Carmen's forever. They make the best mixed-cheese hoagie ever (not sub you freaks). Little miss Mom Mom lives in Bellmawr, so whenever anyone from here goes up to visit stopping at Carmen's is required. They fish-wrap the delicious filling (shredded lettuce, onions and those juicy Jersey tomatoes doused in oil, vinegar, oregano and s&p) so your hoagie is still pristine when you get home three hours later. The Italian hoagie is a close second if you want a little punch. When my folks bring these home, I'm basically gorging for the next 48 hours. You don't want to wait too long anyway--they don't keep well, particularly because they buy the rolls right down the street oven-fresh! *My dad told me Carmen's just changed owners. Stopped in here by chance when we jumped off the New Jersey Turnpike for gas and a bite to eat. When I Yelped for a spot to grab lunch Carmen's was literally two blocks away from the gas station we stopped at. That plus the four and a half stars on Yelp made it a no brainer. I got one of the best Italian hoagies I've ever eaten!! The sub role alone was worthy of a five in my book. So fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Italian cold cuts solidified the five for me. They put just the right amount of oil and oregano on it as well. Then making the sub humongous and only about $7 only sweetened my argument for a five. Carmen's is an authentic style deli to the tee. Huge selection. The place looked like it has been around forever but is very clean. I found this place by accident this time but I will go to it on purpose anytime I have to navigate the NJT(just off Exit #3) or am in the area.
