It's a first class hotel with a lot of local history and flavor. Rates are often comparable to newer chain hotels if you shop with discount travel apps and sites. You may not get a complimentary continental breakfast (toast and raisins or whatever) or the frozen biscuits and gravy that you get at those other places. This hotel has an adjacent spa and restaurant that are both pricey and enjoy great reputations. My wife did not enjoy the gym situation and thought it was kinda dark and creepy "dungeon like" to go alone. Otherwise the rooms are spacious with all modern amenities. Excellent hotel! The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The hotel is a replica of the original one that was built in 1910 that burned down. The people who built this hotel purchased many antique artifacts to decorate the hotel. You can tell they spend a lot of money. We love staying at this hotel when we visit Johnson City! The location is perfect directly across the street from ETSU and near the historic downtown restaurant/shopping district. The staff is top notch! The hotel feels liked you're in one of the oldest historic hotels in TN. The antique furnishings are beautiful and so cozy to relax by one of the fireplaces! The bar and Wellingtons restaurant are connected to the hotel. A four diamond experience! We have a king room and it is so cozy and comfortable. The bathrooms are huge. Love the old black and white tiles! They even have a separate tub to soak and relax. They also have a high end spa on the lower level. First time staying at the Carnegie Hotel and it did not disappoint. It's a gorgeous hotel with so much character. I love the architecture design and details inside like the vintage elevators. When you walk into the lobby, there are Granny Smith apples and the local newspaper available. With the fireplace on, it's so inviting to sit back and relax. Our personal room felt so spacious with its tall ceiling and large window. It had a bathtub and separate shower, desk, mini fridge, flat screen TV, and the sleigh beds were comfortable. Our family never felt cramped. The lower level includes a spa, fitness center, and other amenities. Make sure to plan ahead if you want a spa appointment - they book up in advance. The fitness center has updated equipment like a treadmill with a smart screen so you watch TV, listen to music, and select workouts. The attached restaurant, Wellington's, has the same gorgeous ambience as the hotel. We ordered room service and the staff were so nice. My interactions with the front desk staff were also good. We came to Johnson City for a wedding. This was one of the hotels suggested by the couple. I called a few days beforehand to ask for an early check in. They put in my request quickly. I called back the day we were to arrive and was told there were rooms ready. The hotel is beautiful. Lots of wood and cushy chairs and couches. Our king room had a lovely bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom was huge with a double vanity, a separate tub and shower, and a makeup mirror. The coffee maker came with Starbucks coffee. The bar has dozens of whiskeys available. We sat on chairs by the fire. The service was perfect. We went to the restaurant for breakfast. The food and service were both good. The omelette came with fried potatoes. I suspect they were deep fried but really crispy and yummy. This isn't an inexpensive hotel but if you want to treat yourself, this is the place. read more

Carnegie Hotel is most definitely the nicest hotel in JC. I want to give a huge shout out to Jordan at the front desk and the cleaning crew for helping me a week later when I realized I'd left items there. Great location right across from ETSU. Very well maintained older hotel with beautiful woodwork. Wellingtons restaurant is located inside, with a bar area if you are only looking for drinks. We stayed on the sixth floor with the high ceilings. Sleigh beds in the room and the bathroom had both a tub, shower, and double sinks. There was a fridge in the room, wifi complimentary throughout the hotel, and free parking. We attended a baby shower in the lower lobby, which was very well done. Brunch was set up outside the salon; with a cake table, gift table, alcohol station, drink station, and four large tables inside. There were about 50 people there and it didn't feel overcrowded. Food was good and the staff was helpful and courteous. Overall, a great experience. Would definitely stay again. read more

This place was so beautiful. The beds are comfortable. The rooms have plenty of pillows and the pillows are different sizes and thickness so you have a choice. The bathroom had a double sink in it plus a bathtub that is separated from the shower. The staff was friendly and omg, the food at the Wellington restaurant was amazing. You must try the Springer Mountain chicken. I cannot even begin to describe how good the food was. Everything from breakfast to dessert was good and fresh. My only complaint with the stay was our room was near a parking garage where people like to hang out to take pictures and take their hot rod cars on joyrides. It was a little loud until about 8 pm or so but it was tolerable. I will definitely stay here again. read more

Had planned on staying here and by the looks of the website what an amazing claw foot tub. The website is very misleading and only certain rooms $347+ have the claw foot bathtubs that are advertised for every room. I also noticed that the site misleads you into paying extra and it's only when you change the room type that you get the best deal. Money has never been an issue but false advertisement is a deal breaker. read more

The hotel is gorgeous. Their customer service is deplorable. Particularly with management. I stayed at this hotel last weekend to attend a wedding. I, alongside one of the other groomsmen, decided to share a room. I had never met him before; however, he was a friend of the grooms, so I trusted the situation. The first night he was asked to leave the hotel by the staff and the police because he was incredibly intoxicated and would not stay in his room. The gentleman at the front desk handled it very well. I was trying to figure out where to stay that night because the gentleman had all of his belongings in the room and I was worried that he might come back. I was assured that it would be okay for me to stay in the room; however, in order to do so, they needed my credit card to be associated with the room. I was told that a $20 incidental held would be put on the card. We were all under the impression that the two nights would be charged to the guest that was asked to leave. After everyone went to bed, I went to the front desk and asked if someone could escort me to my room as a safety concern. I was handed four separate keys that night as we tried to figure out the arrangements and I was not sure if his key was appropriately deactivated. I was surprised to see a young woman at the desk instead. By herself. When I asked if someone in security could escort me up, she said that she was the only one working. When an hour before I was assured that I would be safe in my room.... The biggest surprise happened when I went to check out and expecting a bill for two waters that I bought for the grooms. I was charged for the entire stay. I was speaking with someone new and trying to explain the situation; however, she continuously cut me off as "she was aware of the entire situation". At one point I told her that this was not a cross examination as she was constantly arguing and cutting me off. I got her information and the information of her boss. I've been trying to get this resolved since last Monday. I've called several times, left my information with the front desk for a "Joel" to give me a call back. I also left Joel a voicemail. No correspondence back. I called again today and finally got to speak to him. It was a waste of energy. I was told that he trusted his two FOH managers and what they said and that I had agreed to pay for the one night (then why was I charged for both nights...???). I asked him when I authorized that as I did not go to the front desk or sign anything. He said that it was when I entered my chip. I never went to the front desk. The employee manually keyed in my number while I tried to enjoy the rest of my hectic night. No authorization was given. I didn't go to the front desk with him because he said it was for a $20 incidental fee and I did not care because the dollar amount was so low. Joel was not cooperative in helping at all. I asked him to pull the camera footage showing that I never inserted a card, rather that it was manually entered by the employee. My Wells Fargo transaction specifically says that it was manually entered. But Joel insisted that I had to pay for the second night (when I was planning on staying with friends...). I have disputed the charge with my credit card company; however, I wanted to share my experience here in case customer service is an important factor when finding a hotel room of a large venue for a wedding. Once the hotel was paid, communications stopped when trying to resolve this issue. They did not care where they got the money from (which infuriates me as the arrangement was to charge the room to the other person's card). He was kicked out 24 hours before what his next check in would have been. Had I not been in the room, he would have been charged for the total amount anyways. So I'm in disbelief that the hotel is not offering an ounce of empathy nor logic in this transaction. I did not authorize the transaction. They have his credit card information on file. No apologies were offered for the lack of security detail that night, rather a young woman running the front desk. No follow up calls back after repeated attempts to talk to someone. I was met with a response that said "you should have emailed me". In my world a phone call gets a higher sense of urgency than an email. The hotel had no intention of rectifying this situation the second they made the mistake of accidentally charging my card. So I'm fixing it myself. Stay away. The hotel may look nice, but it's not professionally run. You can see from the picture that I never used my chip. It was manually entered. I did not authorize this charge and they don't care since they got their money. read more

Everything was exceptional!! There was plenty of parking, I had an easy check in and check out, and loved my room! I had a room with a king sized bed and it came with a sofa and refrigerator. The bathroom was very large and spacious, just how I like. The spa...omg the spa was absolutely wonderful! I decided to treat myself and had a 60 min relaxation massage, a facial, and a ginger bath detox. There are very many options for the spa which I loved and prices weren't too bad. I didn't have a chance to go to the restaurant, Wellington's, located in the hotel but I will definitely try it if I am ever back in the area. I only stayed one night but it was so worth it. I was in town to visit ETSU which happened to be right across the street which was another bonus! Definitely recommend this hotel 10/10 and it's not hard to find discounts on the price either. read more

went for my nephews wedding, booked under the couples name, 7 months in advance, rooms were supposed to be 129 per night. When it came to check out , Only one night out of the two was for 129, the other one , Saturday was 169, My mother stayed for three, nights Friday night was 169, Saturday was 139 and Sunday was 129, My brother was charged 139 for all three nights. My niece was charged over 678 for the three nights she stayed ( Saturday- Tuesday) I questioned this variation at the desk at check out and was promised the supervisor would contact me when they arrived at 11....didn't happen. Saturday night I was starving, after a long 13 hour drive down, I went into the bar to grab a quick bite. I was told the kitchen closed at ten...I wasn't aware of the time so I brushed it off, went up to my room after chatting with another guest for 5 to 10 minutes and ate an apple. I looked at the clock and it was 9:45. Which meant I asked for something a half an hour BEFORE the kitchen was suppose to close. Not a fan of dishonesty, especially in the hospitality business. to bad but just wanted people to know that if you go, check your bill....and order food earlier than 1/2 hour before closing time.... read more

We were road tripping from NOVA to Lake of the Ozarks, MO and beyond in KS and MO. This was the 5th of 5 hotels we stayed at and by far the most luxurious and beautiful. Actually, it's probably one of the top 10 for me in all my hotel stays over the years. The cost was reasonable for a last minute check-in; I guess we were lucky to get a room because there is a race at Bristol the upcoming weekend. Easy parking, grabbed a dolly for the luggage and free parking in the parking structure behind. The hotel is not as old as it seems- it is very classy with a beautiful restaurant property on site. Most impressive in the room is the gorgeous large bathroom with double sinks, a free standing shower and separate tub (just like home!!). Too bad we were only there for one night! We ate dinner and breakfast at Wellingtons (more later) and it was excellent outside on the deck. The hotel runs very cold so thankful for outside dining. Overall, the recommendation to stay in Johnson City was definitely better than our original plan for Memphis. read more

Hotel The Carnegie is an old hotel with some really nice and large rooms located in Johnson City. Upon entering the lobby, you notice the grand piano and high ceilings harking back to older days where places just seemed more luxurious. The super helpful people at the desk get you all squared away and on your way to your room in short order. The elevators are fairly quick and are oversized -so no boxed in claustrophobia or uncomfortable closeness to smelly people required. The rooms are large - very large - and well appointed. Bathrooms are large and contain showers / tubs and plenty of lighting (a pet peeve of mine when traveling) so you can beautify when traveling. Hot water was HOT, which is great for when you need to get squeaky clean or just wake up. The hotel is decently sized and offers a nice bar area as well as a decent restaurant. I had the opportunity to eat breakfast at the restaurant and it is done in the same fashion as the lobby - high ceilings and lots of wood. Service was on the spot with coffee refills and just enough attention to make sure you got through your meal with no issues. Menu for breakfast was varied enough that most anyone could find something to eat. The bar / lounge area was nicely appointed as well and the bartender the night I was there was very good. Made decent cocktails and came around enough to our table that we didn't have to go searching for him. The bar area was pretty lively and good conversations were struck up. Parking can be a bit tight particularly around the main entrance, but widens out down around the restaurant side of the building, so you may want to just park down there and walk a little further instead of trying to shoehorn your car into a spot closer to the from door. Prices were average for the area I thought but since I am not a frequent traveler to the area, I could be wrong. Overall a decent place to lay your head, grab a drink or a bite to eat while traveling. read more

There is still a lot to love about this place, but sadly we have stayed for the last time. Friday and Saturday night in late May. We stay there about 3 times a year. We have always had an issue with the mattress. It slopes,...badly. This last time it was so bad that we had to decide whether to flip around and sleep with our heads at the foot of the bed. SO bad.. that you cant watch TV because of the slope. And the icing - horrible lumpy pillows. Seriously - between the 10-15 beds that we have had here.. ALL of them did this. I suggest its the sleigh bed frame (which they are probably very proud of..) but some give. Terrible nights sleep. I love this place, please replace the beds/frames. You have an evergreen property next to the University. Don't completely blow it. read more

We stopped here for an overnight stay on our way to Nashville from Maryland. This stop did not disappoint! It turned out to be a mini destination for our family. The hotel was beautifully decorated for the holidays. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The bar has a HUGE whiskey menu. The restaurant makes delicious food. The rooms were spotless and large enough for our family of 4. There are cozy sitting areas all over the hotel to sit and relax with a glass of wine. The spa was very relaxing for our quick pedicure. The best part of our stay is that our beloved dog could stay with us too. This hotel is AMAZING! We highly recommend this for a weekend getaway. read more

I came in town to visit my mother in the hospital and was pleased to learn that a discount was offered. I was not expecting this, but it was much appreciated. From the moment we walked in the front door, we were so impressed. Nicely appointed with antiques, art work and architectural details. The staff was extremely pleasant and eager to assist. It was late upon our arrival and I asked if there was a bar and let me tell you friends and neighbors, this was no ordinary bar. So beautiful and cozy including a fireplace and comfortable seating. They have the largest whiskey selection I have ever seen! The bartender asked what I normally drink and recommended a bourbon I have never heard of which was excellent. After a bourbon for me and a nice Cabernet for my wife, we headed up to the room. The first class experience did not end there. The sleigh bed was so comfortable and the room was very big. The bathroom was also quite large with a separate tub and shower. Only upon checkout did I learn of the Spa on the lower level complete with a wine cave! It's a big deal for me if hotels are pet friendly. Although the price is a bit absorbent ($50 per night), you won't regret it. My puppy was petted & pampered by the staff. Everyone was so friendly & accommodating. Room service was phenomenal, as well. Wellington's is absolutely top notch. Our room was comfortable and luxurious, the killer combo in my book. We did experience a plumbing problem, but staff was on it almost immediately. The maintenance man even returned to our room to assure everything was functioning properly. I booked a $ 500.00 room online which included a couples massage. When booking you request a time. Assuming it would be within your stay, right? Nope. Upon learning they cannot offer the spa services for my dates of stay I was told I'd be offered a "voucher" to return for a spa service at a later date. I guess to be able to charge me again for another room. If you can't honor what you sell you shouldn't sell it! What am I supposed to do with a voucher when I live 4 hours away? Finally got the spa to transfer me to the front desk and seems they are separate companies operating independently just running this little scam together. I was told I'd be refunded my charges.
