A business colleague and I returned to the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City, Tennessee after a late meeting in town, expecting to arrive about 15 minutes before the kitchen closed following a 30 minute drive. Wanting to be considerate of the staff, I called ahead to see if we could place an order in advance without causing them to stay open longer than necessary. Alecia, the restaurant manager, handled the call with both professionalism and thoughtful attention. After asking about our expected arrival time, she explained that she would time the preparation of the order so the food would be served hot and at its best quality when we arrived. She also informed us that Zack in the bar would assist us since the bar remained open later. Her approach reflected a clear commitment to both customer service and the integrity of their dining experience. Upon arrival, everything was exactly as described. Alecia ensured our order was ready and confirmed that Zack would take care of us going forward. Both Alecia and Zack were courteous, attentive, and genuinely friendly throughout the interaction. Their efforts stood out in a time when exceptional service can feel uncommon. I've stayed at this hotel about three times in the last year and will stay there every time I need to go to ETSU for my daughter. we really enjoy this hotel and restaurant. We've ordered room service and I've also eaten at the bar. The bar has Great ambience with a fireplace and very nice architectural features. It also has tables where you can sit and eat. As for the food, the breakfast is good , for dinner, the Pork chop is phenomenal, the airline chicken is very, very good, but the deconstructed Wellington was disappointing. I've previously rated the restaurant at Wellington's but I stayed at Carnegie Hotel again and wanted to rate the Lounge separately. While this is in the hotel, I feel like this is a local bar or at least that's how the bartenders treat it. If you're a hotel guest you're ignored and get less service. Yet you get to watch the locals get preferred service. I sat and watched an older female guest go behind the bar, one bartender follow a Middle Aged man out of the bar and when they came back together about 15 mins later, she only talked to him and the other gentleman he was there with not making drinks for anyone but the 2 of them. I saw the bartender who took my order stop making my drink to take care of people she knew. I've had that same bartender when I stayed her before and she was unpleasant last time too, so she must night like out of towners. I wasn't overly hungry so just ordered the fried green tomatoes. They were tasty but very dry. I told her I didn't want remoulade, so got ranch instead, for an additional dollar even though I didn't get the remoulade (and I actually didn't even like their ranch). I may eat in the restaurant again if I stay at the hotel in the future. However I'll look to see who the bartenders are and if it's either of these 2 ladies, I'll probably save money and not give them my business. read more

From the time you walk into the restaurant the beautiful woods making up the walls, the bar area to the hostess station you know this place is special. The hostess station was, surprisingly, manned by two delightful women named Taylor. One of them led us to our table. We were greeted at our table by Jessi who said she would take care of us, and she did in a very friendly and professional manner. My wife, who was celebrating her birthday, ordered the Deconstructed Wellington. A meal she had savored here on our last visit and knew she had to have again. I ordered the Crispy Catfish, small nuggets of catfish coated in a cornmeal breading. The dish was served with Collard Greens and Pimento Cheese Grits. Though I'm not a fan of pimento cheese the grits were wonderful (as evidenced by my clean plate). This is a dish that I would highly recommend. We skipped desert, as the meals were far too good and plentiful to safe space. We're heading back to the restaurant on Sunday to sample their breakfast menu. Can't wait. read more

My wife and I had been looking forward to dining at Wellingtons. Personally, I had been looking forward to the deconstructed Wellington. Unfortunately, our experience was far from expectations. Our starters were a Caesar salad and house salad. These were the highlights of the entire meal. My wife had the Walleye with a side of Jasmine rice. The walleye was overcooked and under seasoned. The Jasmine rice was a bit undercooked. She could not finish the fish or the rice. I had the deconstructed Wellington. It was cooked perfectly. However, the steak was not seasoned and lacked flavor. Half way through the steak I finally had a taste of seasoning that was crammed into the center of the steak. This and the balsamic reduction was the only flavor on the entire plate. The duck fat pastry was also bland. For dessert we ordered the Crème Brûlée and a brownie . The crème brûlée had a very light hint of vanilla and tasted like a simple custard the brownie was dry (Luckily it came with ice cream.) The ambiance was very nice. What you would expect from an upscale restaurant. The service wasn't very personable. Almost like the server did not want to be there. Would rate the food a one and the service a two. However, we are back giving the restaurant a second chance at breakfast. read more

They have decorated for Christmas With beautiful trees! The dimly lit romantic setting is perfect for a special occasion. My husband had the "deconstructed" beef Wellington was out of this world crazy good! He said it was the best steak he has had in a restaurant! I had the chickpea salad with orange vinaigrette and roasted sweet potatoes was a culinary delight The petite filet with mashed potatoes and the best green beans was perfect! We normally don't get dessert but when they have crème brûlée on the menu, i had to try it. The chef changed up the flavor daily. I loved it. My husband had the cheese cake which also changes flavor daily and this was a thanksgiving special with berries and nuts which wowed the taste buds! In town for work and they recommend that we stay at the Carnegie Hotel. The Carnegie hotel is where Wellington's restaurant is located. I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, the drink selection, the service and the food. Ambiance: Hotel and the restaurant is retro style so, the bar area reminds you of an old speak easy during prohibition. The drink selection: the bar staff is amazing and they make great drinks. If you like bourbon there is good chance they have it! The food was perfectly prepared! I had grilled salmon, Brussel sprouts and whipped sweet potatoes and goat cheese. That's right they whipped the mash potatoes with goat cheese and it was PHENOMENAL! I got a deconstructed Wellington and the puff pastry literally dissolved when you cut it. The reduction was good and the filet was ok definitely needed salt. Definitely did not taste like Wellington which I was going to have at "Wellingtons" My husband had a dry aged NY strip and while the steak was cooked perfectly there was no seasoning for being dry aged. He had to add salt and pepper. Ugh Such a let down, we had the sweet potatoes and mushrooms, they were ok only should have been served hot. We got our cheesecake to go, so we'll see. The food was great! Highly recommend the brussel sprouts appetizer. It was perfectly tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The ambience of the restaurant was very classy and it's a really good date night spot if you want to treat your partner and yourself. The salmon was very flaky and the goat cheese mashed potatoes was absolutely perfect and something new I have never had before. The service was great and the wait time was not very long at all. The largest disparity in service to food I have ever seen at any restaurant. The food is great from steaks to burgers. The food servers are also well trained. But one thing can spoil the pot and that is the lady behind the bar. If I didn't know any better, she behaves as if she is the daughter in law forced to work there and can't be fired, or wants to be fired. The other guy was good and I felt bad that he had to take up her slack. We had a large group for dinner and then drinks after the show next door. We saw her a month ago for the jazz festival and thought she was just rude to us gals. But this time it was to our husbands too and even a few other patrons we spoke to as it was quite laughable. It truly gives JC a bad name as these folks stayed at the hotel yearly and went to this bar. This is why I'm writing this review in hopes that management sees and cares to improve this as again, I've seen better service as Ed Debevics in Chicago where they are purposely snarky and rude. The service was very good - could have been checked on by the server during dinner, but it was not a huge problem. We enjoyed the pimiento cheese, alligator sausage and bagel chip appetizer very much. It was delicious. Our entrees were brought promptly and were very tasty. I had the Roasted Airline chicken and my wife enjoyed salmon. Both were excellent. We enjoyed the mint chocolate custard for dessert. The cocktails were very tasty as well - excellent old fashion! Not impressed by the quality of food or service. Just okay. Fried Green Tomatoes were served with Goat Cheese and Renoulade Sauce. The goat cheese was overpowering and the sauce added nothing to the overall flavor. Grill Chicken Caesar was again..okay. Outback's is better. Grill Salmon had an excellent sear, but the sauce was too sweet and didn't complement the dish. Loved the saute green beans, but the mashed sweet potatoes with goat cheese was missing...something. Dessert - the recommended sundae was a win, the flourless chocolate torte was standard.Service was adequate. Did not notice need for refills or silverware for desserts. Overall, I wasn't impressed. Friday Oct. 4, Terrible experience. My last visit last year everything was perfect. This time taking guests thinking they would love it actually the opposite was the case. The worst service you can imagine. The food was average, not great as it had been. No offer of freshly ground pepper. A drink was spilled on the table, the server said she'd get some napkins, never came back, puddles around our plates, trying not to have it flow to the edges. Excellent place for a nice and quiet dinner! The atmosphere is amazing for such a small space, the decoration and lighting were absolutely perfect. The wait staff was attentive and friendly without being overbearing. The food is exactly the way my grandma cooked, god rest her soul (she was a chef for 40+ years). Interesting twist on southern food with southern charm. The service was on point. Our party went from four to two so they sat us at a table near the kitchen. We asked to be moved and they did right away with a smile. Our waitress was so attentive throughout the whole meal. The food was good. We started with the salmon schmear. We've never had that before and it was actually very tasty. Then we ordered a filet and crusted salmon. The filet was excellent. I feel that cooking a filet is either great or not. There's no in between. The salmon was ok. It was served with sweet potato which we've had better. We finished the meal with crème brûlée and a smoked old fashion. The drink was excellent but we missed the presentation that a lot of restaurants have. The crème was good but they brought it out too soon and the top was not hardened like it should be. I'm big on reservations and notes added with the reservations so I'll start with that leading to why I have 3 stars instead of 4. My first visit here was 3.7 stars, the food was 4.2 and the services was 3.2. I had the walnut and pear salad, fried Brussels and quinoa wrap. The Brussels has a great taste I just wish they were a bit more tender all around. The batch consisted of several hard pieces mixed with tender pieces that melted in my mouth. The hard to tender ratio was off with hard winning in the larger numbers. I was shocked that my wrap was cold, it was really yummy so the coldness didn't bother me much. The salad was good, I had the side version so it wasn't too large or too small. My waitress acted as if I was her first table ever which I doubt was the case at such a fancy place as they would pair her with someone to ensure she was good to go solo. Anywho, she was very inattentive - none knowing and none responsive.. I returned the following week and made a reservation per usual with notes and I specifically specified a booth and upon entering I was taken to a table in which I didn't want to sit at after a long day and really needing a comfortable space to relax and wind down. The hostess was so empty she didn't say anything after reading the reservation and heading to take me where I wasn't interested in sitting and when I told her that my notes stated a booth, she replied "Yeah, I don't have any available now" I replied "That was in my reservation notes so I see you read them, is there a reason you didn't notify me before sitting me where I wasn't interested in sitting"? She replied "The booth was already sat before the reservation came through" which was a LIE.. Nonetheless this threw me off but the server made up for it tremendously as he was amazing. I say the food I've had here was very yummy: - Fried Brussels - Pear and Walnut Salad - Quinoa Wrap The only three things I've had both visits and they WIN each time. I am not sure if and when I'll return due to the hostess and the waitress who was very unpleasant. This place is nestled inside the Wellington hotel I presume. You can enter the hotel from the restaurant through the bar which can get pretty loud the later it gets. I could barely relax the other night as the bar was so lively and full which is a good thing for those enjoying some cocktails and conversations. I have nothing against them and just know to not try to rest or relax when there. read more

Our stay at the adjoining hotel was wonderful, but having a perfect dinner waiting for us downstairs made the weekend so relaxed and warm. The filet was juicy and seasoned with a sweet/tart reduction. All of the dinner dishes we tried were fantastic. Breakfast was served to order, nothing special.
