FINALLY! A real Mexican street taco! I recently moved to Indy from Texas and have been searching for real Street tacos for the past few months. I know I have high expectations because in Texas we have good street tacos on every corner. I've always been let down up until I found this place! These street tacos are real. So flavorful and delicious. The pastor tacos (seasoned pork tacos) were filled with so many spices as it should and the asada tacos (steak tacos) were perfectly cooked. I also judge a taco place based off the salsa and they were 5/5. The red salsa was perfectly spicy and the green salsa had a good tangy flavor. Only complaint I have from my spoiled taco self is that they were a little expensive for street tacos. In Texas, it's $1.50 per taco. Here it was about $3.50 per taco. I came here for tamales, but left with tamales and a bean, rice and cheese burrito. Next time, I'll just come for the burrito! My burrito was really good and alllllmost the way a BRC burrito should be (the exception being that they use white cheese instead of yellow cheese). The refried beans and rice were bomb, though. The tortilla, too. The tamales, I did not care for. The masa of the tamale was a little too wet, and the tamales themselves were huge. They were wrapped in banana leaves instead of the typical corn husks, which could be why they were so wet and slippery. I ordered half a dozen tamales, and ended up throwing two of them away because I just couldn't eat them anymore. You can buy food at the little restaurant inside Carniceria El Ranchito like I did, and/or you can do some shopping, because the restaurant is located inside a Mexican grocery store and butcher shop (aka carniceria). This little restaurant is inside a Mexican grocery store which in my experience are some of the best. This place did not disappoint! It is of the fast serve walk up the the counter variety. I had the Burrito Loco and it was very good. The cheese on top was spicy and the burrito was full of steak, chicken, onions, and pico. We went after dark and they had a security guard standing outside, but I did not really feel unsafe there and it is not in a terrible area. It did take me a little bit to find the restaurant since I didn't realize it was inside the supermarket. I ended up doing some grocery shopping after. Hands down, the best tacos I had in Indiana. This place is not hyped up like Nada or Delicia, but it definitely serves better (and less expensive) food. Everything is quite authentic and very fresh. My coworkers and I have been consistently driving to El Ranchito for the last 2 years during our lunch breaks - it's that good and it is worth the drive. Plus, we like to support local businesses. Not to mention they have a friendly staff as well! They provide cheaper and much better food quality than Chipotle or any other Mexican chain restaurants I've been too. I ordered a steak burrito and it was the BEST steak burrito I've had since living here in Indianapolis. It was packed full of ingredients and only $6.50! Carniceria El Ranchito offers great, affordable dishes from its restaurant/carry-out area. It is another one of those fantastic authentic dining spots that are found in Mexican groceries across town. And, most importantly, they have delicious, tender lengua, which always favorably tilts the scale. My favorite order is the burrito supreme, with black beans, lettuce, fresh tomato, rice, scant amounts of cheese/sour cream, and the meat of your choice (I recommend the lengua, barbacoa stewed beef, or steak). The burritos are always very fresh-tasting, not too heavy or gooey. My favorite part of Carniceria El Ranchito is the flavor-bomb counter, with small tubs of spicy pickled carrots & red onions, roasted jalapeno peppers, and homemade pickled jalapenos, as well as 4-5 different squirt bottles of salsa. They elevate an already decent meal to the next level flavor-wise. Prices are very reasonable, with a huge, filling burrito supreme at about $6.50. I'm more a fan of carry-out, but the dining area is clean (although a bit worn-looking). The menu grows on the weekend, when you can order carnitas or menudo. To tame the homemade jalapeno'd pickles, you can order a horchata or aqua fresca to go. It is not the best horchata in town, but definitely dampens the heat. My only recommendation for Carniceria is to assign numbers to the orders, instead of calling out the type of food item; when it gets busy, your order can be mistakenly taken by another lengua burrito fan. P.S. Pro Tip: Visit La Palapa across the parking lot and supplement your tasty carry-out with a mangonada. read more

Well, I have driven by this gem of a Bodega for a couple of years and never stopped in. That changed the other day after reading another Yelp revue. I was not disappointed and was thrilled to know there was a full fledged Taqueria inside. The menu is easy and simple. The food is as good as anything the city has to offer. Ok so this Hispanic grocery store has a hidden gem inside! I was hungry one day before class, and wanted a small snack. There isn't many options by the UIndy campus, so I turned to Yelp. After my search, I found great reviews on this Hispanic market with great cooked food. It is only about 2-3 blocks away from campus, so I decided to give it a try, and boy was I not disappointed! I went on two separate occasions. The first time I tried the Shredded Beef Quesadilla. The next time I tried the Gordita w/ Asada! Although the quesadilla was delicious, it was very rich. The Gordita on the other hand was absolutely perfect! I asked for cheese inside, and the Asada was tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection! Wow! I couldn't believe the amount of flavor, freshness, and quality that comes out of the kitchen at this market! All they are missing for me is Margaritas, and I would make them my weekly stop before evening classes. read more

This is my first visit here, not for groceries but specifically for the restaurant within the store. I had the carnitas tacos, (corn tortillas, onion, lime and cilantro). They were very flavorful and only a minor annoyance with fishing a little cartilage out of the tacos. My husband had gorditas but they weren't what we were used to seeing like in bread or a bun, but rather like a fried corn tortilla type shell. It was still delicious though he, too, had even more cartilage in his meat and this is why they didn't earn 5 stars. My daughter had a shredded beef quesadilla which was huge and super good and my niece had Posole. Good but lots of fat. Overall, 6 of us had filling meals with horchatas, canned or bottled soda for $30. I would definitely try this again. You should know, however, that the bathrooms are not at my minimum standard for cleanliness and would advise against using them. read more

This place is big. They have about anything you could ever need in the way of Mexican groceries. Plus lots of stuff you didn't know you needed. Or if you prefer you can buy the food already prepared from the small restaurant inside. We go here specifically because they sell very thin sliced chicken as well as an enormous variety of other meats. And the butchers are very friendly. They also sell bottled pop which I love. Squirt in particular. They also have a bakery with some delicious looking cakes. The produce section is large and well stocked. We have never eaten at the restaurant but it always smells amazing and is always full of people. Judging by the other reviews I may try it next time we swing in. This is our new favorite Mexican store. Give it a try, just don't go near dinner time if you're in a hurry. And don't miss out on the bottled pop! read more

They have a remarkable selection of produce, spices, meats, fish, beverages, pan dulce, etc. I love going in and just looking around, and I can almost always find something that I am very interested in trying. I'd give it 5 stars without hesitation if it wasn't for the in-house restaurant which was pretty terrible. Granted, I went when it was close to closing, however, the tacos were not good, at all. I was really surprised, considering most of the workers speak little to no English, so I was hoping for a phenomenal taco. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The chicken was so dry I could only take a bite, the pastor was even drier, and the lengua was chewy (which it should never be). I feel like every time I review tacos, I always say it's one of the best tacos I've ever had. After trying the Al Pastor tacos from here, I really believe that I've found the best tacos in Indianapolis. My fiancé's family and I came to this supermarket purely for the kitchen. The rest of the supermarket had a lot of spices, produce, a small bakery section, etc. I'll have to come back to stock up on hispanic groceries sometime. My fiancé and I got a mixture of al pastor and carne asada tacos along with horchata and jamaica (hibiscus) drinks. We've had these before at other restaurants but here, these drinks had such a strong flavor and were perfectly sweetened. It made us realize that the previous times that we got these drinks at other places were watered down. The tacos, my god, the tacos. The al pastor was the best I've ever had. It had such a strong pineapple flavor along with a perfect spice mixture from the marinade. My lord, each bite was fantastic and my mouth is drooling as I'm writing this. I thought this was going to be similar to the authentic tacos I got elsewhere. Not quite the same but not horrible either. The flavors are amazing. Sadly the pollo was dried as if they left it on direct heat all day. I had 3 Tacos Mexicanos con pollo.. (meat on corn tortilla with onion, cilantro and lime) the two salsas they provided were interesting. Salsa Verde was perfect and light with a nice kick. They have another salsa, I believe made with tomatillos but it had a strong kick, orange in color. It was the perfect level of spice for the taco. My only disappointment came when the restaurant workers just kinda stared at myself and a friend as we approached. We were going to indulge and stay and eat inside, but I felt like a specimen in a petri dish.. All in all, I wouldn't give them a bad rating for the entire experience; I just wont be returning unless all other portion are closed. I had heard from friends that this was a great place for authentic tacos and it did not disappoint. There is a restaurant area immediately to the right upon entering the Mexican grocery store. I was immediately excited because they had about 5 options of Agua Fresca and they had my favorite, the hard to find Pina! I ordered a Pina, elotes on a stick, pastor and asada taco all for around $10.00. The tacos are about $2.50 each and there are several options. There are several tables and a bar area by the kitchen for seating. I pulled up to the counter and my food took a couple of minutes. Ask for salsa for your tacos when you pick up your food, there is a salsa verde which I thought was very mild and a red salsa that is slightly spicy with a nice smoky chili flavor. It's a very nice casual place to go to eat or for takeout for a great price. They offer a variety of dishes such as burritos, salads, tortas, gorditas, quesadillas and have special menu options on weekends like soup and tamales. This is literally in my backyard, and I couldn't be more excited. I have heard lots of good things about the west side location-especially the "Mexican grill." They have a small dining area for people to eat. I really just wandered in because I saw it was open when I passed by (opened 4/4/14, they told me). They also have a small "snack" area where you can get just filling for tamales, which it looked like they sold by weight. I don't speak Spanish, but think this is what they were saying. It's a separately hot table off to the right of the cashiers, heading out. One of the people told me this location is larger than the other one. They also have a butcher counter. I've taken two people here (Sam and Andrew) and they have loved this spot. It's like a mecca for Mexican food and ware on the southside of Indy. I love it! I walked in and immediately spotted the amazing produce selection. Corn husks, sugar cane, endless plantains...count me in. A huge butcher and deli that serve pretty much everything pork, beef and chicken PLUS any kind of Mexican cheese one could ever dream up...yes please. I'll take this and that and oh wait you have a fresh bakery?? YES! A bakery that serves up everything from the usuals-churros and such to cupcakes, cookies, donuts, and sheet cakes for that fiesta. The restaurant is good, not amazing, but I'm here to shop folks. The prices are fantastic and this has some great looking produce. I do wish they carried the el milagro tortilla chips-they're Andrew D,'s and my favorite!!!! That's ok. I can handle it but maybe eventually they can get them. This place not only has a huge selection of groceries that you can find in Mexico but the restaurant has some of the best tacos. If your looking for something you could take for a big group, the tabla, is a great option. The tabla comes in a small and a large, both are huge and can really serve more than they recommend it can serve. Delicious!! Between us, we had a chorizo taco, steak taco, chorizo gordita, and chilaquiles. Everything was delicious. There was also a great selection of salsas, from mild to nice and spicy. Our favorites were the chipotle and the avocado/jalapeño salsas. We were also able to use the Yelp check-in coupon for a free soda, which was great. And everyone working here was friendly and glad to answer questions about the menu and the salsas. Nice seating area, too.
