I appreciate being treated to lunch but wouldn't return. I didn't realize what the name was until now, so it is definitely not an optimal spot if you have vegetarians or vegans dining with you. I like a dim atmosphere, but it was hardly lit enough to read the menu. It was difficult to navigate as it was mostly in Spanish. Extremely limited vegetarian options which I'm not sure I can assume were actually without chicken base in the rice, etc. I didn't even see a vegetable fajita on the menu. My vegetarian burrito sans crema and cheese consisted of little more than rice and a couple small diced pieces of avocado and diced tomato. Iceberg lettuce? I saw corn niblets and a pea fall out. Bland. Hot sauce choices not fantastic. What kind of burrito contains no beans?? Everyone else at my table received flatware. I was given a plastic fork. Once I received an actual fork & knife, they kept tearing the paper underneath my burrito. Strangely served with raw cucumber (ick) & lime wedges on the side. Edible at best. The atmosphere looked interesting upon entry, but it felt grungy, the chairs were heavy. I was seated right next to a brick wall/chimney. Service was sparse. Definite language barrier. The dish my companions received was an array of meat in a molcajete. Mixed feedback on the peppers being ungodly too hot & some of it, especially the sausage, having a good flavor. It was massive & messy. It was interesting initially but definitely didn't look appetizing to me. That came with a bowl of beans in sauce with what we later discovered were Chicharrón on top. It looked like boiled mystery chicken skin. A friend from SoCal I consulted online had no idea what it was from my photo as we tried to discern it & they didn't realize it was even Mexican food from the appearance. It was assumed I was at an Asian joint. We had to ask for drink refills far into our meal. I was given a fresh new cup. The server took another person's cup from the table and refilled it in the back. That was strange and seemed unsanitary. We didn't get everything we asked for. I'd say language was the problem except for the fact the server had understood my requests when "crema" was the only Spanish word I used. Ladies' room had room for one person at a time. The sink was backing up. It felt dingy like the rest of the building. I'm glad they had paper towels and not just a hand blower. I didn't choose the restaurant. It was one of the worst if not THE most horrible Mexican meals & experiences I've had in my life. Hard pass. I'd gladly pay more for better fare elsewhere. I can make far superior at home. read more

It's not quite walking distance from downtown, but if you have access to a vehicle, it's only 5 minutes away. The restaurant is fairly new and connected to the grocery store. (The grocery store used to have a taqueria inside, but it got so popular that they bought the space next door and opened a full service restaurant. I was fully expecting a small hole in the wall restaurant, however I was pleasantly surprised to see a spacious and beautiful restaurant. We came specifically to try the tacos as they've created the reputation of being very inexpensive and authentic tacos. They don't have prices on the menu however I believe they were 2-3 dollars per taco however they tasted like they were 10 dollars each. The service was amazing and our tacos came out within 5 minutes. The fish tacos had great potential however the only flaw was that they were very dry. The Al pastor tacos were a nice change to the fish tacos as they were more savory and juicy. The meat was fantastic and it really nailed the salty-sweet combination. The quality is there and it really puts bang for your buck to another level. The server even gave us a free to go cup of salsa and bag of chips which was incredibly generous. read more

After spending the day downtown watching the state high school soccer games, we felt like trying something new for dinner. Our friends suggested this restaurant and it was only a few minutes from IUPUI, so off we went. You enter the building through the grocery store, which we loved! In fact, my son and his buddy loaded up on Mexican candy after dinner! The restaurant had a interesting, very eclectic atmosphere. For sure unique. The menu was a fun mix of Spanish and English but we were able to figure it out with our limited high school Spanish! The street tacos were excellent- our party tried a bunch and we all decided the chicken was the best. The guacamole was smooth and the small was a big serving! We tried cactus and hot roasted peppers (because why not?), and enjoyed the sides of rice and beans too. The corn tortillas were my favorite part - perfectly cooked. No margaritas, but a cold diet coke waa still a good companion to the spicy hot sauces we added to our meal. Pretty much the best reference for a Mexican restaurant in town! If I'm not wrong this was the first Carnicería Guanajuato in town and not so long ago they did some remodeling to the building next to them and now is a grocery store plus a restaurant! This restaurant has several tables so it can hold a group easily. This time I tried their fish ceviche tostadas and they were not disappointing; most Mexican restaurants add a lot of onion to their ceviche to make it a profit bi giving less fish but not in here. One of their specialties is the steak or mix platter which is a big plate with different types of meat with beans and tortillas which serves up to 6 people. I big recommendation is when you ask for their hibiscus water ask for an extra glass of regular water because they prepare a huge water jug with tons of sugar, wish they could do something with this. During the weekends you can try some special things in the menu like menudo or pozole which are very tasty stews of goat or belly. Hope you give a try soon! read more

I think it has changed from the hole-in-the-wall with super cheap food that I read about in previous reviews- tacos are now ~$3 with the trade-up being a really lovely ambience with mural paintings and sculptures. Chorizo taco- really delicious, sinful-tasting taco chock full of ground chorizo Carnitas enchiladas- I'm torn on the carnitas. I think they were a li ttle too authentic for me, having quite a bit of skin and kidney (!) pieces. If you are ok with the texture of organ meats, the flavor was still fantastic! As for the grocery side- lots of unique fresh produce and a diverse meat and cheese selection. I really liked the queso oaxaca ("Mexican string cheese"). We found a very tasty restaurant inside the grocery store. we were pleasantly surprised with the food & the stuff was friendly too. HOWEVER they don't sell alcoholic drinks . Anyways We had the meat table for 4 which was about 33 dollars but it was enough for our family of 6 and still had left overs. We will definitely be having this again when we visit downtown Indy. When your mouth waters while you write a review, you know it's good. Come for the most authentic tacos in the land (the Indiana land that is). Brush up your Spanish and order them con pollo, carne asada, chorizo or lengua- they're all delicious. I got pollo this time around, but will be back for carne asada. They're less than $2 a taco, so definitely get more than one. I also tried chicharrones for the first time (i.e. fried pork rinds). For $0.75, the to go bowl lasted for a day of snacking. They're salty, addicting and a nice (once in a while) snack. This is a Mexican grocery store, so the 'restaurant' area is small and not meant for hanging out in. I recommend that you get your food to-go. The grocery section is rockin' as well, with hundreds of pinatas hanging above the produce. It was also the first place I've ever seen where you can buy full aloe leaves and coconuts. They also sell all the Mexican snacks and drinks- spicy chips, Mexican Coke, spices and more. Restaurant CG puts all the other Indy taco venues to shame, Nada & Bakersfield ain't got sh*t on this place! My first time here was for a Yelp event a few days ago and we had the opportunity to try the fish tacos. They were very good so we're back to try other items on the menu. The Market was known for their superb taqueria and busy location so they have added this full service restaurant. Street parking is available along the building and the restaurant is just a few blocks from I-70 on the corner of Oliver Avenue and Division. The upscale restaurant is lovely with murals on the walls, tile floors, a faux balcony, a very impressive, large water fountain in the center of the dining room with lots of warm colors throughout. We were immediately greeted by the gentleman at the carryout counter then taken directly to a table by the hostess. All of the seating is 4-6 top tables with generous spacing between tables. A green and red salsa was delivered with chips in just a few minutes. I enjoyed the salsa but my husband found it just okay. It wasn't as spicy as the first time I had it and I hope it was just a fluke. The extensive menu can be a touch confusing when you first start browsing with both Spanish and English descriptions. The categories are well marked and each item has a brief description and many of the meat items are prepared several different ways. You'll find the standard menu items plus more. Tacos, Fajitas, Tortas, Quesadillas, Nachos, Burritos, Eggs (available before Noon), and Enchiladas are all available. The entrees include half or a whole Chicken, Grilled or Breaded Chicken Breast, T-bones, Steaks prepared with different sauces, Enchiladas, Pork dishes and many Fish and Shrimp dishes. I love all the seafood options with different Seafood Cocktails, Seafood Soups, Surf and Turf, whole fish to tilapia filets and Shrimp with various sauces. They offer for groups of 6 two table options, Seafood Table ($69.99) or Meat Table ($44.99) for six. The seafood table is served with Paella, Shrimp, Baby Lobster, Oysters, Tilapia, Fried Tilapia, Marinated Shrimp and Raw Fish, plus Crab Legs. The Meat table can be ordered for 4 or 6 persons. It's served with Steak, Grilled Chicken, Mexican Sausage, Fried Pork, Cactus, Grilled Onions and Jalapenos. An extensive menu that has something for most. They are prepared to serve 1 to large groups. My husband ordered the Fajitas Cameron (Shrimp) served with rice, beans, a salad, grilled green peppers, onions and tomatoes and tortillas. First, what a generous portion (see the pictures) and these were nice size shrimp. Flavorful, delicious but just a tad overcooked, but not enough to destroy the texture or flavor. He was thoroughly pleased with his dinner and found it to be a great value compared to many other restaurants. I ordered the Filetes de Pescado/Tilapia Filet grilled on a flat iron. When my dinner arrived it was 3 full filets with beautiful grill marks. The large plate was almost overflowing with a small salad, a tasty red rice and thick, almost charro, beans. All for $10.99? What a value for the quality and quantity of food we enjoyed. The Market is open and an entrance is open from the restaurant. I get snobby about tacos in the sense that I look for a healthy portion of juicy, tender protein nestled in a tortilla that's not going to fall apart on me midway through. While most spots deliver on the tortilla, not everyone delivers on the protein...and I can't stand dried out meat. Reading the claims that this was one of the best spots in town, you know I couldn't resist the challenge of trying it out for myself. As you enter through the entrance of the grocery store, walk in between the entrance to the aisles and the registers, and you'll wind up in front of the small, no-frills eatery. I was floored at how all but one seat was taken at the two counters at 4 o'clock on a Monday. Always a good sign, amirite? I ordered two tacos--one chorizo and one pastor--with onions and cilantro and took the last seat at the counter, enviously watching patrons slather salsa on their tacos. Luckily, I waited about a whole four minutes for my tacos. As I was handed my paper tray from the cook, I was pleasantly surprised at how heavy it was. Carniceria Guanajuato is plenty generous with their portions. Still, my number one priority is taste. How would it fare? Oh man. Oh man, oh man, oh man oh man oh man. The juicy factor is there, and the tenderness doesn't pose a single issue. Both meats were superbly prepared and cooked - not a dry bite in sight. Heck, I got a little sad when my meal was over it was so lip-smacking good. If I could only choose one taco, the pastor wins by a tiny margin. Today I walked in for lunch and was expecting to fight for a table. To my surprise, an upscale restaurant had appeared. Tables to serve over a hundred patrons, a beautiful fountain, artistic murals, an extensive menu, sparkling restrooms and uniformed servers bustled everywhere. It really was an excellent dining experience. The food as usual was really great and has not suffered. I ordered my usual, two lenqua tacos, elote ( Mexican corn on the cob) and a glass of delicious horchata (a sweet rice drink). While looking over the menu I noticed that there were lots of appetizers and a large selection of seafood. I thought to myself...what the hell, let's order half dozen of oysters on the half shell. I know it was risky! Once again I was happily surprised! The oyster were briny, plump, and better you can get at good steak houses in Indy. They were presented well and half the price!! The new restaurant that had been added to this establishment is worth visiting. And of course you can skip desert and do your grocery-shopping after dinner. read more

This so far the best Mexican food I have found in Indiana. Im Hispanic so I know good mexican food I had the chicken and shrimp fajitas and they were delicious. My husband had the chicken enchiladas and he said they were so good. He also had the carne asada taco and said it was the best taco he's ever had ( and we've been to many many taco places). I also tried a taco but I had the tripas and it was delicious. Their salsas were very good and spicy just how we like them. To drink we had the horchata and it was very good. We will definitely be going back. Can't forget to mention the interior decoration it looks so cute. While the mayonnaise freshly clogs my arteries from the highly-praised corn on the cob also known as maize here, (who would have guessed?) I might as well pause to write a review. A few takeaways: *they take both cash and credit *you can purchase limes 10 for $1 along with several other budget-friendly produce items *the meat counter area is a little stinky *they have enough packaged chorizo to feed an army *go crazy and order the horchata or pineapple juice at the counter - both are delicious *there is an entire isle of packaged spices *and lastly, it's true - the tacos are amazing and very cheap at $1.75 (topped with onion and cilantro and a side of sliced cucumbers) Now, don't be silly like me and wait too long to check this place out. I was so pleased I could get my elote in a to-go cup and eat it right in my car on the way home, because who can wait!? My favorite part, the salsa verde (green salsa). Reminds me of my mom's! It was nearly empty for lunch, with a limited menu, but it turns out they had everything we could want for lunch... street tacos, burritos, and tortas. My friends had al pastor tacos and an al pastor burrito with sides of rice and beans. I had my standard Mexican food order- carne asada tacos with cilantro and onions. The cucumbers that also came with my tacos were huge! Chips and salsa came with our meal, along with two hot salsas. I loved the salsa verde... it had a nice kick to it. Try the tiny restaurant tucked into the back of this grocery store. Don't come at high traffic times unless you are prepared to eat in your car or take it home. There are only about 10 seats in this place. However, the food is phenomenal. If you're on your bike, get the food to go and zoom over to the zoo or canal (about 3 blocks away). My fav thing is the tacos. A medium appetite woman can eat just one. A big man -- maybe two. Make sure to add some of their homemade red or green salsa. They also have pickled jalapenos on the counter. If you like heat, try the corn, which is covered in crema fresca (they call it mayo), crumbled queso cheese and chili powder. They also have a pineapple drink that reminds me of an Orange Julius. As for the rest of the grocery store, the produce is extremely diverse and pretty cheap. You can get 15 limes for $1. They also have mangos, cactus, tomatillos, and other Mexican-type produce. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that the place is a bit dirty. This is pretty much a simple review for a simple place. This Indy Gem is hidden by the nooks of the old GM Plant in the downtown area. I have had the pleasure to indulge myself in the delicious, cheap, mexican cuisine. PSA: Please don't make this about the dressing of the plate, or the atmosphere of the "restaurant". This is a taco hut located inside of the supermarket. The choices are simple: Tacos, Tortas, or Burritos. with about 10 different meats. I have heard people numerous times specifying that they want "Soft shell tacos" or "fish tacos" this is not taco bell.... =) Try it all, see what you like. My favorite? Tacos de asada with horchata.
