Hands down, the best La Hacienda we've been to! We'd always heard people rave about La Hacienda but never really understood the hype--until we tried this specific location. Do yourself a favor and come to this one; the others just don't compare. I enjoyed a 16 oz Lime Margarita that was both refreshing and reasonably priced. We started with the Chori-Queso, which had the perfect balance of queso and chorizo (something that's surprisingly hard to find!). For my entrée, I went with the Arroz Texanos--steak, shrimp, and chicken all topped with melted cheese and served with tortillas on the side. Visited La Hacienda with coworkers recently for lunch. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated and given menus along with salsa and chips. For lunch, I went with a creamy chicken dish with tomatoes and peppers. My coworker recommended the chicken soup, but I didn't request it. Next time, Gadget. Next time. The food was delivered quickly and my chicken was delicious. It came with tortillas, but I didn't use them. It also came with the usual sides. I very much enjoyed the dish and it disappeared quickly. Today was my second time going to this location & it didn't disappoint. My only drawback is that I was sat near a window and it was extremely breezy on an already cold day. I ordered the chimichangas camarones and they were perfectly crisp under a salad and atop bed of refried beans. The chips were fresh & hot when they came out . Queso was extra but a necessity! My grandmother only had one complaint of her chimichangas- she got the shredded chicken, she said it was more so like chunked chicken than shredded. My husband and I ate dinner here on a Saturday night. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and seated outside. That was great because the weather was so beautiful. The table was clean and after a few minutes someone brought chips and salsa. The chips were hard, not warm and like cardboard. The salsa was like tomatoes out of a can without any seasoning. We decided to share an entree, Poblano pepper and enchilada. Beans. Beans were tasteless, where is the pepper I ordered? Just a bunch of hamburger with some greasy cheesy stuff over it. I called the waiter over. "What is this I asked?" He said he didn't know and asked what I had ordered. He couldn't even explain the "stuff" I had on my plate. My husband also ordered queso. An earlier dinner has already comment on how bad it is/was. Never again. We have tried this place twice and it has not measured up. Really too bad because it has a choice location on Ft. He was friendly, attentive, fast, and efficient. I'd give him 5 stars! The food came out pretty quickly. The salsa was good, as were the chips. I ordered my go-to enchiladas verdes (chicken) without cheese and sour cream. This made it gluten free and dairy free. :) The chicken was well seasoned and the salsa was perfect. The enchiladas weren't as good as my the ones at the place I usually go to, but still pretty good. The rice as well. My friends all seemed to enjoy their own food. One specifically noted how good the red sauce was on the enchiladas they ordered. The queso was a table favorite as well (I'm dairy free so I couldn't partake). The food at this location had little to no seasoning, and was all reminiscent of bland cafeteria entrees. No spice. No pepper. Nothing. I was shocked. I had the combination platter with a Beef Taco and Enchilada, with a side of rice and beans. The Taco was served in a cold, hard shell with lettuce and cold shredded cheese. Now...I know we're in Indiana and so the authentic "cilantro, onion, corn tortilla" presentation isn't always the default. So, I asked for a soft shell, and they asked me if I wanted to transfer my ground beef to another tortilla...long short, the result wasn't any better. Cold and flavorless. The beef tasted like bland spaghetti mix. The chicken enchilada had what seemed like boiled, tough shredded chicken breast. Not a lime or an onion in sight to add some zest. Rice and beans were also lackluster. I hope that this review can be received as constructive feedback for the owners to work on their recipes. I used to go to Hacienda all the time, like 10 years ago. I've come to know now that this is pretty much like any other Mexican restaurant. I wouldn't call it unique in any way, now wouldn't call it authentic either. So when we went here the other night after a decade, I just want impressed. The servers either don't have the time or the desire to really converse or socialize... our server was pretty disinterested in us. I guess the only advantage to sitting down and having dinner is eating your meal hot and the chips and salsa they bring out immediately to munch on is good and gettinga pitcher and socializing with your group. The margaritas are again just your average premix. I get a shot of Don Julio to mix in otherwise it's pretty much kool-aid. The chori-queso was GREASY, intentionally, it seemed as if they have the chorizo cooked and stored in its grease that when they poor it over the queso it's just a ton of grease. Not tasty nor good. I had the steak ranchera, which I have ordered this dz. of times in other restaurants and this is the very first time I can say the steak had zero flavor, not even salted, it was bland, period. The mixer of jalapeños, onions, etc was burnt. The rice had no flavor nor did the beans. When I tasted the beef enchiladas from my friend, the ground beef was so mulched up it was like a purée of beef sauce, yuck. This particular La Hacienda is our favorite when we want to sit on a patio/outside and sip a beverage. Located at Fort Ben, it is close to home and the food is good - a double win! Service is friendly, salsa is tasty, and we have had good experiences at each visit. The hubs usually gets some type of fajitas - and they are served on the hot skillet here. He is also thrilled that they usually give him plenty of tortillas and lettuce - bonus. I get some sort of chimichanga (soft, not fried) or burrito at each visit and have always been happy. Food comes out SUPER quickly, too - so that is helpful when you are in a hurry. As noted in a few other reviews, prices may be a little higher than their competitors - and we average about $35 for dinner for 2 including tip, without adult drinks. That price can go up if you choose to have a beverage. As a heads up, they are not affiliated with the La Hacienda on Graham road, so your coupons will not work at this location. Right around the corner from my house, La Hacienda is the perfect Mexican food to bring you all the feel goods when you need something comforting. I got my usual, but took it to go today. It's the Arroz Texano- Mexican rice smothered in cheesy queso topped with chicken, steak, AND shrimp. I ordered a side of beans, because who doesn't want beans with their Mexican food? It's the most satisfying meal! I use the tortillas and make little mini burritos with beans, rice, queso, and the protein. The portion size is huge and I'm always left with enough for lunch the next day. The service is always quick, but know that this place gets poppin! Its Cinco AND taco Tuesday so it was only right I ordered tacos. I placed our order at 5:30 and was told 6:30 pick up. I arrived at 6:35 and the restaurant was PACKED shoulder to shoulder with people, some in masks some not. You literally couldn't get into the door! Once I was able to get in I noticed they had completed orders spread out on a table. For about 2-3 mins a staff member stood yelling out names in broken English that no one could even hear. Finally a younger staff member walked through and I asked him to check the table for my order-It was there, thankfully! The food smelled amazing and was still hot. Then I got home to discover our tacos had no cilantro or onions?! WTH! I literally wrote 'cilantro and onions on the side for both' in the comment section AND it was printed on the receipt! We also didn't get the rice that came with our meal. It was literally two boxes of tortillas and meat, that was poorly presented. I am 100% disappointed with La Hacienda for not taking into consideration social distancing when picking up take out orders. To not have any sanitary precautions or guidelines in place at this point is ridiculous. If I have to stand in a small space with everyones COVID breath on my food, at least get my order right. read more

Had a really good dinner here late Sunday afternoon after a visit to the Salt Cave. While the weather was great, there was a sign on the door saying the bees were really bad and recommended eating inside. So my party of 9 went in. They were able to accommodate us really quickly. Less than five minutes to clear a table. Drink orders were quickly taken. The margaritas were really good! Some even felt tipsy afterwards, lol. I'm not a big steak eater, but for some reason the Texas Nachos were calling my name. I was glad I got them. They didn't skimp on the chicken, shrimp, or steak. Everyone enjoyed the drinks and meal. It wasn't crowded while we were there, but it did get crowded when we're leaving. Our waitress was spunky and funny. There was a slight communication issue when some of my party was trying to special order menu items. There wasn't a gluten free section, for example. But in the end, it all worked out. Three bites later the same waiter snatched away my enchilada! Then he brought out a plain quesadilla! It's always hit or miss at this location, the food or service or both. We only go here sometimes because it's walking distance from my cousin's house. Btw, Combo #8 is enchilada, taco, and burrito. What I got was 3 bites of enchilada, a bean tostada, plain quesadilla, and frijoles refritos. I've been here with my fiancé about a million times now. We go to a lot of Mexican places and will go weekly if we find a good one. This was until today. They changed the menu and raised the prices. Not anything like inflation add a few cents here and there. No, a pitcher of beer went from $11.99 to $20.99. We used to come here and get lunch for $25. We will never come back. $21 for a pitcher of domestic beer? Crazy. Got our usual order and it was $25 more expensive because they bamboozled the public and raised the prices sooooo much. My friend's vague recollection from her experience years ago was positive so...why not? I now understand why she was able to remember it from so long ago. The quesadilla is really a quesadilla in that there's filling stuffed between the a folded tortilla. You cannot pick this up; it is overflowing with vegetables and large chunks of seafood. I had prepared myself for a spattering of little bits of baby shrimp and krab but no. It was a most welcome surprise. The filling was well seasoned; the shrimp, crab and scallops were tender and plentiful. A clean, tastefully decorated space with prompt, attentive service and delicious food. La Hacienda is the Lawrence/Fort Ben spot for a multi-location Central Indiana chain of Mexican restaurants, a smallish restaurant located inside one of the historic train depots that used to be part of the formal Fort Harrison military installation. However, unlike the nearby Cafe Audrey this restaurant has chosen to largely ignore that history with its decor and opts for a more traditional Mexican-tinged design with bright colors and a very busy combination of table and wooden booths. As a good majority of this area is comprised of former Fort Harrison buildings, it's not particularly surprising that accessibility is nearly always an issue. While there are a couple of accessible spots up front, not quite but pretty close to ADA compliant, once access the door via a modest and awkwardly constructed ramp the concept of accessibility kind of goes out the window. You enter and the hosting station is immediately there. I realize that's somewhat necessary given the size of the restaurant, but it's kind of jarring and even more jarring when you look at the overly packed dining room that looks and sounds busy even when it's not quite full. While I'd hoped for a quiet lunch, I think you could probably sit in this space alone and it still wouldn't be quiet. I was somewhat intimidated when they wanted to seat me at a small table toward the back of the dining room area. The rows are incredibly narrow, a larger wheelchair couldn't possibly navigate it, but I was able to make it once a couple people moved their legs. It wasn't comfortable - I'm not even sure it was safe, to be honest. They also offer outdoor dining - while on 56th Street, it has a certain appeal to it and I'm quite fond of the Lawton Loop area. The menu is largely traditional Mexican, or at least Americanized Mexican, and I immediately opted for my usual Arroz Con Pollo along with my usual unsweetened iced tea. The serving size was pretty generous. The chips/salsa were decent - the salsa lacked much of a kick, but it still hit the spot. With a bill just over $15, it strikes me as being slightly on the high side for Indy-based Mexican but not unreasonable. Still, it's not a splurge I would make regularly. Service was friendly and helpful - the food came out rather quickly, almost too quickly, but overall service was fine. For me, the difference between a 3 and 4 star often comes down to "Will I go back?" Truthfully, I doubt it. While I am in this area a lot, I typically hit Cafe Audrey, Sherwood Cafe or Culver's. I tend to like quiet, relaxing atmospheres and this is anything but that. Given the price point and the atmosphere, my gut tells me this is a place I'll only visit again if someone else makes a request. read more
