This is a great little carniceria right off Harding Place in Nashville. Fresh cuts of meat adorn cases prominently displayed as you go through. Also lots of seafood options too. You can get your fresh cheese and even spices here. I came primarily for chorizo. I wound up, leaving with two different kinds plus Carne adobada. Boss man threw in a couple of seasonings he wanted to try as well. It was well worth the price. They even offer rotisserie chicken meals here. You know you're at the right place when you see the large grills lined up outside. The smell is always amazing. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I'm sure some of them speak English, but being that I'm bilingual, I have never had a problem. I highly recommend that you give it a whirl. Coming from one of the largest melting pots in the country, southern California, I was accustomed to not having to look very hard when seeking an ethnic grocery store or butcher shop. Nashville, although having grown by leaps and bounds in my time here, is still a place where one needs to look around and spend some time searching in order to find that place that can be counted on to have what you need. I have found Carniceria San Luis to be my go-to store for several reasons. I always see a crowd of people here. This is a good sign, because you don't want to go to the store that never has any customers (and therefore no product rotation). People, no matter where you are, will always gravitate to the better places. There is a large barbeque outside and they put it to good use. Their BBQ chicken is delicious and affordable, and they will even cut the chicken into pieces if you want. The butcher shop has cuts that are not normally found in the Krogers and Publix's of our area. I'm talking cuts like short ribs, skirt steak, several styles of fajita beef, tripe, and ox-tail. The reason I visit the most is the ceviche. It is fresh, spicy (piquante), and can be ordered in small enough quantities to be a lunch, or large enough to share with several friends. I usually get 2 lbs at a time and they will give you hot sauce on request in small plastic containers. This is one of my regular stops every few weeks. Inside I found it a bit intimidating as a non-Spanish speaker, it is definitely a neighborhood joint and not one made for tourists. I got the Family Chicken meal for about $18.50. Service was immediate, I paid and had my food in 30 seconds. It was a whole BBQ'd chicken chopped up, a bean soup, jalapeno dipping sauce, and hot tortilla shells. Chicken was smokey, juicy, and delicious. I easily shredded it by hand. I think it could have had a bit more seasoning. Their jalapeno sauce was also good, it was herby and overall pretty mild in heat. By far my favorite part of the meal was the bean soup. It was delicious, full of porky flavor, and filling. I actually used it to add some flavor to the little tacos I made out of the kit. It had some sausage in it as well as chicharrones, which I've never had but really enjoyed. read more

This is the first Yelp review I've ever written. It will be one of the few I ever write. After visiting dozens of restaurants, this little butcher / hole-in-the-wall restaurant is the most amazing thing I've had the delight to taste. The "chicken with everything" includes soup, onions, and sauce. The soup is quite spicy. If you don't like spicy, don't get it. I don't know what they put in the soup, but if there is something more addictive than heroin or crack, it's probably in there. I am still dreaming about the soup today. It's that good. And the chicken is the best fall-off-the-bone take out chicken you could ever get. When you bring home your little bag with styrofoam containers, it doesn't look like much. But when you open, smell, and taste it, you will realize you have discovered Montezuma's Gold, the Ark of the Covenant. Carnieria San Luis is that lost treasure. Each tamale is only $2.75 and can easily feed two people quite well. The meat is amazing....one thing - they don't really have condiments or anything to go with them...and there is no seating. So get the tamales to go and have some good condiments on hand at home to jazz them up the way you like them. No joke. I was standing here, about to order my diesmillo (not sure how to order this cut of meat in English, so I always get it at carnicerias like this one) in order to make carne asada tacos. Guy walks in behind me with a huge, at least 150-lb, very freshly-dead pig, with a quick "con permiso" squeezes past me to get to the back. You can't say it's not fresh! They do have prices listed for whole pig. Also, the diesmillo meat (which you marinate overnight, grill/broil up and chop up to put into tacos) is about $3.89, about as much as you'd pay to put ground beef into your tacos, without the pink slime and also about 5 million times tastier. The meat is always great, I have ordered the rotisserie chicken as well which is good as well. Tasty salsas. They seem to have a lot of premade things ready, like hamburgers/tortas/aguas, etc. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of their charro beans. And while the tamales are definitely.... something... be warned, if you are used to Texas/Mexican style tamales, these are not what you are expecting. They could easily feed 3-4 people, $2.75 each, wrapped in a banana leaf. I have eaten tamales from guatemala all the way up to Ohio and almost everywhere in between and never encountered this before. Inside, you can buy a chicken plate or a full chicken meal. For just a little over $15, you get a whole BBQ chicken, corn tortillas, grilled onions, and a big container of beans. Like many, I passed this intriguing spot many times before finally stopping. This is more than a store, more than a strip mall, more than a parking lot. It's a market in the old world sense where folks gather to shop, eat and visit. The level of activity that surrounds CSL is great. I ate from the taco window at the end of the building. I had a couple of tongue tacos and a couple of carne asadas too. They were served with chopped onions and cilantro, grilled onions, red and green salsas, and lemon wedges. They were $1.35 each and worth every penny and then some. It's like leaving the country for lunch. I visited the butcher and will be back with a cooler soon. We live in Clarksville tho now and if you want to grill up some asada for the game theres none around. So after a 45min drive in steps in San Luis. The smell of BBQ chicken (and seeing it cooking on the grills) made me come in and look past the tripas and other "blood & guts" (I think that's what Tony Bourdain calls them), and order it. In a word, outrageous. And really cheap. It's been a while, but it was $10 for a whole chicken, like 16 oz of homemade beans (not mashed like refried beans), salsa verde, and corn tortillas. So you only need one, the chicken of course has been smoked on the grill, the verde has a little heat. Although it could be a spice on the chicken they use for the tamales.
