Carnitas is a must try if you're on this side of town! I used to work near here and it was a mainstay for lunch. I live across town now but still make the trip every so often for their food. I really enjoy their salsa verde and the cuts of beef they use are tender and tasty. They are great for breakfast and lunch, there are plenty of tables, and the employees are nice and helpful. They have booths and tables, and can accommodate some large groups, maybe two groups of 6-8 people. I definitely recommend checking them out for a quick sit down bite when you can. read more

My favorite spot for breakfast tacos. I get the bacon egg and bean or eggs la Mexicana and bean. Add the green sauce and you get 10 out of 10. What a pleasant surprise. Came by this place due to a recommendation from a friend. Breakfast menu, lunch, dinner options and even chicken fingers for your picky kids. I've been curious about this place for a while. They are always closed, so it was nice to catch them on a Sunday morning. My rating reflects the service and the price mainly. The carnitas were great. We've seen this restaurant change names two or three times in the last years, finally Carnitas Mexican Grill seems to have worked. Instead of having to drive closer into town for Mexican breakfast (when I don't feel like cooking) we like coming here. It is a counter service restaurant so you'll pay for your meal before you receive it. I usually stick to the same dish, Super Breakfast, which has a little bit of everything that I want. Eggs, chilaquiles, beans, chorizo and potatoes. The food is good, but I feel like it's not hot enough, hot as in temperature. The chilaquile sauce is not spicy at all, which is great for someone who doesn't like spice. I on the other hand, prefer spice. We ordered a side of bacon and it truly was horrible. The texture was similar to carne seca or beef jerky. When we brought it up to the waitress, she agreed the bacon was overcooked and brought out fresh bacon, this time cooked to perfection. The flour tortillas are fresh and hot! If you order coffee, you'll have to pour it yourself, which is not an issue. We will continue to visit as it is convenient for us. read more

This is my favorite local place for migas. It's actually the whole plate. Those potatoes and sauce! I have not had potatoes like this in any other place. What is not shown are the refried beans on the other side of the potatoes. They are beautifully creamy and smooth and, thankfully, not overly salted. I seldom eat refried beans at other restaurants because of too much salt. The perfect blend with the migas and potatoes. Migas is my favorite breakfast and I go in search of restaurants that serve it (and have done so for years) but I always return here. The staff is friendly and efficient. The rice was rice. Beans were good but I felt like the serving size was tiny as well. Guacamole was also forgotten in my order. See photos attached - I felt that the takeout portions look significantly smaller than other diner's food. The queso dip tasted like melted velveeta - definitely not what I was expecting (I generally expect white queso dip, but that may be a cultural difference). First of all went to eat here for the first and last time and it looks like a restaurant, but you have to order at the counter like a fast food! the older woman at the register had the audacity to ask my husband if I was his mother! This restaurant used to be called Abuelos. I reviewed it last year and gave it a 2. Sometime in the past few months they must have closed because Carnita's is now in its place. Funny though when I walked in last week for lunch the same menu was up on the wall,however the name was changed. I decided to order the chicken fajitas with charro beans. It was around noon on a Friday and it was difficult to find a bussed table. There were some empty tables but they were unbussed. Finally I snagged a table and waited on my food which arrived about 15 minutes later. The food also came with complimentary chips and salsa which the old Abuello's did not provide free. I wish the chips and salsa had arrived earlier however they were good (3). The fajitas and beans were good also (3). This restaurant is counter service only but they deliver the food to your table. One of my family's favorite breakfast spots. It's only open till about 2. So we decided to go early before church. Everything we had was simple but so yummy! Our groups favored plate is the Salvadoreño that has refríes beans, cheese, homemade crema, choice of type of eggs and Maduro (fried sweet plantains). Plus it's served with fresh hand made tortillas and an awesome green verde salsa. Service is friendly, place is very clean and food is served quite quickly, even when we have more than 5 people. I started going to Carnitas for the breakfast tacos. Those tacos are really tasty. All of them come with refried beans. I usually get two chorizo and egg and one bacon and egg. And the price is really reasonable. Recently I started stopping by for lunch, always for the carne guisada, which is very good here as well. And I'm quite the snob when it comes to carne guisada. Today, I told myself that I would try something different and settled on the enchiladas verdes. When the nice lady came out and put my plate in front of me, I thought "Now that's a lot of food." Huge plate of chicken enchiladas covered, virtually swimming, in tomatillo sauce, and so much cheese. So much cheese! Standard rice and beans, also tasty. And sides of guacamole and sour cream. Wow. It was the best meal I have had out at a restaurant in a while. I may have to try everything on the menu eventually. They have counter service, not table service. The staff is always very nice. They seem to have a steady flow of business whenever I'm there. If you are a menudo fan (I am not), it seems like people like the menudo here. I see lots of people with it on weekend mornings and afternoons when I'm getting breakfast tacos. They do not serve alcohol, so no margaritas. They have both red and green salsas. I prefer the green, but it has a bit of a kick to it, so go easy with it. read more

So before I tell you how wonderful this place is, I want to warn you that they're only open for breakfast and lunch. This is great for the employees here, because who wants to work night, but if you live around here and only are able to go out for dinner then you are missing out on a fantastic little Mexican restaurant. I've been coming to this place for over a year now, and I can't believe I have not given it a review already. They have fantastic breakfast items, my favorite is chilaquiles. I love the chilaquiles. And the breakfast potatoes that come with it are really really good. They have a lot of different breakfast items to choose from so you are not limited to a few things. Their lunch menu is even better. My favorite thing are the enchiladas suizas. I love them. It's hard for me to pick anything else. Now my husband prefers the chimichanga with ground beef. That's his go-to lunch item. They have a lot of different combo items and everything is very reasonably priced. The chips and salsa come free with the meal and are good and fresh. Both the red and the green sauce are spicy so don't dive in until you've tried it. The staff is great too, very good at remembering people, which is always a plus for me. I would definitely recommend and I would come here a lot more often if I still worked in this area. Rating based on breakfast experience: Carnitas serves some pretty authentic Mexican breakfast. I came in to a very clean restaurant that wasn't overly full l. You walk up to the front to order before sitting, which was a nice easy experience. The menu is full, but not overly complex. For breakfast, they serve a menu starting with taco variations, served on corn or homemade flour tortillas. They also have breakfast plants, ranging from huevos ranchero to pancakes. I ordered huevos ranchero and a chorizo, egg and cheese taco on flour tortilla. Let's start with the taco. The taco is massive. It's basically a burrito not folded in. The tortilla is homemade and a little fluffy and chewy. It was to my liking. The tortilla was filled with very flavorful chorizo and egg filling, that was surprisingly not greasy. There was a ton of white mozzarella style cheese melted on top. Overall, it was a very good taco. Now to the huevos ranchero.... The ranchero sauce was excellent. Honestly, the flavor was about exactly where you would want it. It was nice and spicy, but not overly hot. There were small chunks of peppers and tomatoes that sat well on top of the perfectly over-medium eggs. If I had one complaint it would be that there was a bit too much water/liquid from the sauce on the bottom of the plate. The retried beans were nice and smooth, and the bacon was super crispy. My biggest complaint were the potatoes. They reminded me of canned potatoes. I was really hoping for some nice crispy fried potatoes covered in ranchero sauce but was greeted with mushy white potatoes that just didn't excite me at all. Overall, very good authentic Mexican food is served at Carnitas. The restaurant is clean and the people working there are courteous. It's worthy of a stop, just skip on the potatoes (not worth the carbs). read more

I like the idea they sell single tamales BUT it has more masa than meat. There were flies around the lemons where the water was so I skipped the lemons for my water. Had I let some of the reviews stop me, I would have missed out on a great meal. So, upon entry, the deal of the day was 3 hard shell tacos, rice, and beans $6.99. That was right up my alley, to my surprise my meat had pieces of carrots and potatoes inside. The kids meal we ordered that was supposed to be chicken nuggets looked like filet fish and was so tasteful and more on the adult size of a meal. Others in my party was over satisfied with their meals as well. A friend had a churro, come with her meal that was as good as Shipley's fresh donuts. Salsa and chips we're spiced just enough if you like it hot, and I like it Hot! The restaurant is beautiful, with a dashing stunning chandelier in the middle of the dining area that gives great enhancement to the beautiful king size cozy chairs available for a intimate conversation. Another one bites the dust. On my long anticipated return visit, I was sadly underwhelmed with my meal. I ordered the kids meal chicken strips which is a strange choice for a texmex restaurant but you would have had to taste them on my first visit to understand. On my first visit we ordered them for my lunchmates' toddler. They looked so appetizing we had to each have a bite. They were unbelievably good! I knew I would order them on my next visit. They arrived to my table looking and tasting of fried fish. They were flat and wavy with more of a rubbed coating than a crust. Tell me...is there anything worse than fishy chicken? I mean other than chickeny fish. When I I asked why they changed the recipe, he was befuddled. This was the same counter employee that served use last time. After we convinced him that these were not the chicken strips we had before (with pictures), he stated it's because they fry all their meats in the same oil. Well that's just genius now ain't it? Her offered to prepare something else but seeing as how I wasn't overly impressed with my texmex dish on my first visit, I declined. The strips weren't terrible so I ate my lunch and decided to find a new lunch spot. To go further, the churro I so enjoyed on my first visit was also lacking on this visit. First visit: soft flaky light brown dough generously dusted with sugar and cinnamonon. Second visit: Chewy and had obviously been cooked in scorched grease. Its crevices were packed with sugar and cinnamon to hide the unappetizing dough. The filling was barely there. Bummer! read more

I can be pretty biased against some places in the area where I live...I don't know why, I just don't expect them to be great places. I came here to get breakfast tacos on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. They don't seem to have a huge breakfast taco menu, but they had options like chorizo/egg/bean, potato/egg/bean, and eggs a la mexicana. They also have some breakfast plates like migas and chilaquiles. I loved how cheap their tacos were! As someone who tries new taco places regularly, they were noticeably cheaper, which was a nice perk. I had a potato/egg/bean taco and an eggs a la mexicana. I really enjoyed both! The flour tortillas were nice and chewy, and the tacos were pretty full with toppings--I added cheese and it was the white kind...yum! They brought out red salsa, which was really nice...it's not roasted, and had a lot of good flavor, without being really spicy. I requested their green salsa, which they brought out in plastic cups, and that was my favorite. It's that creamy jalapeno salsa, which I absolutely love. It wasn't super spicy either. I would highly suggest stopping by for breakfast if you're in the area. They're so conveniently located right off the Beltway at Gessner, that I'll probably start swinging by to bring breakfast tacos to work. read more

You can't go wrong with their beef fajitas or barbacoa. Their menudo is also very flavorful and serve more than enough. The rice is just like the homemade Mexican kind. I'm not huge on beans but my sons seems to love them (and he's a picky eater). Their breakfast is also just like the kind my mom makes at home (so 2thumbs up for that). I have yet to try their enchiladas but that's next on my list! Last I wanna give the best review to the waitress (can't think of her name at the moment). She is AMAZING! This restaurant is in a shopping center that has gone through so many owners that I've never gone in there. But on my way to work I noticed that it was open at 7 o'clock in the morning. And then I looked on yelp and noticed that they sold breakfast tacos, so of course I was inclined to go and try it. So I went in yesterday and I ordered to breakfast tacos. A chorizo and egg and beans taco, and a potato and egg and beans taco. They were only a $1.50 each, and they were amazing! You got so much for such a small price. And they were delicious. So naturally, this morning, I woke up and I was happy to see that they were open on Saturday mornings as well. So I went and I got a bacon and eggs and beans taco and also some chorizo and egg beans, tacos. Again, very delicious. I think I am now a fan and I hope they stay open for a long time. Haven't tried anything else on the menu. Hopefully I'll get around to trying lunch soon, but nevertheless, if you're a foodie, and you love breakfast tacos, this is the place to go.
