We've ordered their tamales from here before and enjoyed them so we decided to try out the chilaquiles plate and tacos from here. I liked the flour tortillas, eggs, potatoes and beans on this plate. We had brisket and egg and sausage and egg tacos. It is a wait because it's fresh and made to order but so worth it. The brisket was savory and juicy. The tacos are small but delicious in flavor. There's a lot of different seating styles and they have an area to choose your sauces, onions, and cilantro to add to your meal so that's nice. Found this place by chance. First time we went we tried the tamales and those were good. We also ordered the babacoa tacos and they were super greasy, we couldn't eat them. But we did love the carne guisada tacos! We moved from San Antonio several years ago and have never been able to find a good carne guisada taco until now. I wouldn't recommend the Babacoa but their carne guisada is really good! Their other breakfast tacos are nothing to write home about but over all good place. read more

Saw this place while driving by and decided to try out their tamales. Walked in & was greeted. The place is cute. I love the fact they have a Bible when you walk in. I came in for tamales and that's what I had. I mentioned to the super nice lady in the front this was my first time and which were best. She told me the red pork then asked if I wanted them spicy and I said yes. So I ordered half a dozen.. I had also mentioned the rajas are usually my favorite but would try these first. My ONLY eghhh was the tamales were thin... is that going to stop me from coming back here NO!!! They were delicious. Had very high expectations for breakfast based on their tamales. Boy were we disappointed. First of all everything was "Extra". Ordered Menudo which was very greasy and overpowered by chili powder. Not lying but probably the worst I ever had. Asked for fresh chopped jalepenos which is pretty standard for menudo but was told that was extra and could get pickled jalepenos from the salsa bar. Asked for lemons and was told that was extra that there are limes on the salsa bar. We asked about chips and were told that was extra. My wife ordered chorizo egg and potato tacos barely had any chorizo. Basically was just American sausage no real chorizo flavor. Also ordered a barbacoa taco and it was making any flavor. Just tasted like brazed meat. I ordered huevos rancheros and the eggs came out scrambled. Very odd in my opinion. Refried beans were good as well as the salsa rojo and salsa verde. The ambiance was nice. Good clean atmosphere but very odd the we had to order at a "window" and truly did not have a water/waitress. Kinda like going to Taco Bell. I like this place. The food isn't showy, but it is good. The people have always been nice. The restaurant has never appeared dirty in any way that I could see. My complaint is that I have asked them to not put my hot enchiladas in a Styrofoam container because it melts and depending on how long it actually takes me to get to my lunch it can leak everywhere. I have been to this restaurant many times over the years with great food and great customer service. Today was NOT that. We ordered and were advised that there would be an upcharge on the charro beans I ordered. I was fine with that. No biggie. After 15 mins we still didn't have our order and many other customers who ordered after us had there orders. We then asked for it to be packed to go. Still nothing. We finally just asked to cancel the order after over 20 mins. That's when the manager was completely rude to us. We came here because it's normally quick for food. Not once did they advise that charro beans take time to make because it was a special order. Just ridiculous. If they would advise that when I ordered, I would have not ordered them. Went today to meet with family and was not pleased at all. I ordered the ranchero plate listed at 8.95 which rang up 10.99. Husband had the taco plate which was also 8.95 asked for ranchero beans and told it was an upcharge so I agreed only to end up 13.49. Queso and chips were 5.50 Rang up 6.49 so when my order was 38.75 I questioned the prices and she pointed to a sticker on the menu that said price increases. Ok however when we finished our small bowl of chips that came with the queso and asked for more they wanted to charge us. I don't mind paying for good food and service but there was no service. They weren't friendly at all. They brought our food with no napkins or silverware. We were new so I was running back and forth getting plastic silverware asking for chips and salt and pepper. Then had to find my own bag for leftovers. The food was good but I don't go out to eat to pay these prices to serve myself. I'm really not hard to please but this place is not for me. read more

The food is very much like the food that I had when I was living in San Antonio. The service was fast and friendly even they were busy and I am talking about out the door line busy. But they still manage to get everyone's food including the dine in. We had lunch first kind if give it a taste test. LOL. Let start off by saying i had been a customer of this place for years, when they were at a different location. I would go there one to two times a week. ON 2-18-25 . I place my order over the phone for two cheese enchilada plates and one beef brisket taco. When i get there and she is revising the order with me, i notice there was a mistake and told her i didnt order a beef enchilada plate. Instead of honoring and taking care of the customer, the owner was arguing with me that the plate was already made and that I had to take it. Beside going back and forth with me, she then compares the beef enchilada to beef brisket like its the same thing. What?? While I 'am sitting there while they remake it, she is berating me telling me like it's my fault the customers have to wait now, that i cant place any more order over the phone. After years of having their tacos, a situation arose about 5 years ago where they decided to forget our queso for a to go order. We ended up going back, after having already paid for it then PAID FOR IT AGAIN. Fast forward to a few days ago, we decided to try again for the first time since then. We were rudely greeted (as have for a decade) by the toothless lady. My mother and I ask for just a water cup, after buying $20 worth of queso and tacos. We were told "you can only buy the water bottles, we don't do water cups". Stupid, but no problem... I decide to go get my water cup out of the truck, then was rudely told "no outside drinks". Look guys, your queso is great but doesn't make up for your poor customer service, lack of manners, and expensive prices (oh and your tortillas are store bought trash). This is San Antonio style food. If you know that taste, this restaurant will be fantastic. They have San Antonio style PUFFY TACOS with the picadillo filling. They get rated a four/star rather than a five/star because the food comes out on styro plates, Mexican food has to be server on hot plates that keep food warm. Other than that, it's great! read more

ATTN: management you are so close to being a 5 star place. Two things you have to fix ASAP! Also if I wasn't so generous with the star you could easily be a 3 star place. 1. The green sauce. I have to drive to another restaurant when I was going home because you all don't have the guacamole based green sauce. This is a standard at all Mexican restaurants. You all have two salas: red and green. Sadly these are the watered down salsas you find at chipotle. Don't be cheap! Make the damm guacamole green sauce we all love. Avoid this place !!! There was several red flags that should have made me turn away as soon as I walked through the doors (angry faces of people waiting for food, a menu board with post it notes of changes, the silence of the entire resturant even of those eating) but being optimistic I bravely stayed on course. First I grabbed 1 of 2 menus provided which both looked as if a child went at it with a sharpie covering prices and making price changes (not done by a child) so you go in ordering blind not knowing the price of anything. Once i was ready to order i ran into the cashier who was being overworked answering phone orders taking, line orders and getting most of the heat from the angry people who were waiting on their food, so I went the safe way and ordered 2 fajita tacos and 2 Carne Guisada tacos and a dozen of their world famous chicken tamales with a coke. The food came out piping hot so it looked appealing until I took the first bite of my fajita taco it tasted like a cheap knock off pepper steak wrapped in a soggy tortilla, the Carne Guisada had no flavor and finally the tamales that were super skinny little to no chicken and was just masa, i was highly disappointed in this resturant and would not recommend it. read more

My fiance loves Balderas, she has been coming here for years and continues to place an order every year for tamales around Christmas time. I enjoy their pork tamales myself but not much else. I have tried several things here and each time I was underwhelmed by what I received. The crispy tacos are extremely greasy and not full of flavor. So I finally decided to come here with my fiancé since we were craving tamales and he found them listed on a top 10 for tamales in Houston list. Tamale prices seem to rise often. Now $14 a dozen and they aren't that big or that good Barbacoa tacos are $3 bucks but it would have been nice if the barbacoa was actually fresh.
