another update, its my 5th time going in for a bean and cheese, and honestly, they have their on & off days :( the first time I tried the burrito, the beans were seasoned nicely, and there was a good amount of cheese. I started noticing that both their salsas and beans taste different every time, and I wasn't getting enough cheese in my burritos, I couldn't really taste it the next times, and the burrito is kinda small for almost $10. the first time I loved the green salsa, the next time the red one won, and this last time yesterday, I thought my beans were seasoned a little too much with salt, the red was spicier but I liked it a lot and the green was good as well, they're just different every time. and I also got charged for my salsas yesterday :( read more

Wanted to grab a quick bite to eat stopped by here for some carnitas tacos to go. Next time we'll eat there. They had a lady making the tortillas right outside the entrance as you come in and the restaurant has a casual authentic vibe. Will definitely be back! Also, since it was our first time here they gave us a small sample to try the carnitas it was so good and we ordered just 3 tacos 1 for each which was plenty the taco had lots of carnitas you could've probably made 2 tacos from the 1 taco. The juiciest carnitas tacos I have ever had. The chicharrón was fresh and very flavorful. The location may seem a bit away from Downtown San Diego, but the food was worth more than a 15-minute drive. There are many taco joints in downtown San Diego, but nothing comes close enough to the carnitas they serve. The restaurant manager? was very nice and helpful. I had never been to a shop like this before, I asked them to make me what they make so they did. now I can safely say I'm not a fan of Carnitas. Some parts my mouth kicked out the food thinking it was just fat or gristle - not my thing. I ordered one of every street taco they had and their specialty burrito. The service was fine. The people are great just not my cup of tea for food but if you like pork with that fat strips in it, this place is awesome. There's plenty of parking and plenty of indoor outdoor seating and you can tell people just have fun they do offer a waiter type of section where you can be served. So if it's your first time or you've never had this style of Carnitas, as this is a very stylized version, Maybe do the sit-down and order. I think I would've had a better experience had I done that cause I would've been able to ask more questions I just didn't know what to ask. They have an orange and a green and a black sauce. None of them are particularly hot, but the orange one was definitely more flavorful for some of the tacos. The avocado is on point though it's A+. It was on all but one taco. The Asada taco was good I ate that. The burrito has a fun bean mix and it's really delicious. If I went back, I would order a Carne Asada burrito. read more

Staff is always very nice. Ordered the chicken enchiladas they were supposed to be Michoacan style. They had sour cream which in My moms region they are not serve that way. They are served with cabbage and then they have a tomato sauce that goes over it. It's made of tomatoes, a little bit of jalapeño juice vinegar and oregano and it was missing. I would not recommend getting this again however since it was Tuesday, we ordered the three dollar taco special and I feel the tacos were actually worth it filled with meat. Absolutely delicious for that. I would return overall good experience. It's really hot in there. I didn't feel any AC and it was 90° today. My order was to go. read more

I found a gem for Carnitas! Located on Highland Ave in National City. The name carries the city known for the best Carnitas in Michoacán Mexico, and they did not disappoint! I ordered the 1lb of carnitas which came with beans, rice, 10 tortillas, chopped cilantro, onions and escabeche (pickled carrots and jalapeños). EVERYTHING was full of flavor and fresh. The carnitas were soft and moist just the way they should be. We were greeted and attended by a welcoming lady, Deneri, manager of the restaurant. She was very polite and attentive to us. After our meal, she recommended a dessert, the Conchas with "nata." A sweet bread with a creamy milk spread, served warm. A must try! You can eat in or have your order to go. Limited parking. First time here... came in with no recommendations. Just randomly driving by and decided to see if they have the best chilaquiles in town or 5 Star quality chilaquiles. Right off the bat before even saying hi, the bring a complimentary taco de carnitas with two salsas(super pleasant surprise). I'm guessing habanero and salsa verde con aguacate (not sure, the green was a delicious mistery). The taco was amazing. The carnitas are so soft, juicy and flavorful. The fat in the carnitas is great. It's like having carnitas and chicharron in one. The cuerito (skin) parts are cut into small pieces so you don't get that blob of fatty cuero (skin). The cuerito (skin) gives the carnitas a nice boost of flavor and texture. Feels and tastes more buttery. Never had it quite like this before. I was honestly in shock with how good it was. I'm not a big carnitas guy. I don't go out of my way to get it. They literally almost threw the complimentary carnitas taco at me lol... and I'm glad they did. After eating the delicious complimentary I decided to pull the trigger on the CHILAQUILES VERDES. What was cool and unique was the fact that the waitress asked me if I wanted crunchy or soft and then spice level. I said crunchy and kinda spicy. The CHILAQUILES VERDES are served with a side of beans with queso cotija, potatoes with onion and peppers, two eggs (over medium), and carnitas on top. The chilaquiles have sour cream and some red onion on top. The potatoes were nicely cooked while keeping the peppers and onions from getting too soggy. The beans were really good. I have a feeling they are fried in manteca (lard). It's the kinda beans you just put in a tortilla and you're good to go. Solid beans. Eggs, over medium. A little over cooked for my preference but still good. Carnitas we're the same as they were in that complimentary taco. Best carnitas I can remember trying in a long time. Didn't come in here for that but I'm very happy I found them. Let's just say I have a new carnitas place. The CHILAQUILES VERDEZ are the best CHILAQUILES VERDEZ in town. There are my new favorites as of 4/26/25. They were thin and crunchy. And remained that way. They serve you very generously. Every bite I had had some crunch. The crunch wasn't as loud as I progressed but they kept their integrity. They didn't tortilla soup on me. That salsa verde is some gourmet ish. I can drink that salsa. Salsas Verdez are usually a little too bitter for me. Sometimes very overwhelming. This salsa verde is so good. This salsa is a different level. No seeds no chunks and still very flavorful. I still need to know more about that salsa. Also ordered an horchata. They make their own. No prepackaged stuff. I knew they did as soon as I took the first sip. You can taste the quality. The horchata is a little chalky which I kinda enjoyed for a change. You can just tell the quality. You taste the vanilla, cinnamon and rice. Nice, subtle and gentle. The right amount of sweet. The ambiance was great. This place feels like you're in Mexico somewhere. The way it looks inside and the way the air hits when new costumers walk in is so soothing. The service was A+... What a delicious spot I stumbled in National City for lunch yesterday! The carnitas here are amazing and some of the best I've had. The smell when you walk in is incredible coming from the kitchen and they make everything for you at the counter. The staff here were friendly and quick when I ate here. I got horchata for my drink and it was so good and rich. One of the best I've had and they seemingly make it fresh every day. The same goes for their food and their tacos here are packed with meat and is about 2 of your regular street-style tacos. The salsas here are hot and are flavorful. The carnitas here stand out a lot for me and are so flavorful and they are not dry at all and get an easy 5/5 for me. The birria taco I had was also good with plenty of flavor coming from the consome they were in and get a 4/5 from me. This will be a go to spot for me in future when I'm back in the area and highly recommend coming here if you want some of the best carnitas in the San Diego area! read more

Carnitas Quiroja is a new taco shop in National City and I'm so glad to have dined here. They had a set up going outside for takeout orders. Upon arrival we were handed a carnitas taco that was packed with meat and was warm in between the tortilla. This already made us even more excited about the place! The menu is extensive and portions are big. I settled on chilaquiles with fried eggs and carnitas as the protein. They do ask if you like the meat mixed with fat, or if you like it with more of the lean meat. I really appreciate this as you can control what types of meat you're getting. Chilaquiles (4.5/5): Thick chips make it crunchy even under all the sauce. The red sauce is vibrant and not spicy but really went well with the eggs. My eggs were a little overcooked but all was well. I really liked the refried beans as they were packed with flavor. Birria Taco (3/5) Adobada Taco (4/5) Carnitas Taco (5/5) There are two signature sauces they hand to the table which are great! I would have asked for limes for the tacos but will ask next time.
