I had gotten rave reviews about Carnivore Sandwich from several of my friends so I was very excited to try this shop for lunch. I rolled in at 12 pm and it was very crowded. After a 10 minute wait I placed an order for a Reuben sandwich. The cashier was quite rude and impatient with me which was confusing especially considering I had patiently waited 10 minutes to be able to order. My friend ordered right before me. It took 25 minutes for my sandwich to be ready which was very long especially considering my friend ordered a Reuben right before me and got his sandwich in 10 minutes. Moreover, I was the last person in the entire shop to get my sandwich and over 10 patrons who ordered after me got their meals before me. The sandwich itself wasn't bad but it was very overpriced at $20 for the volume of food. Yum! Can't go wrong with a tuna melt! They do it just right, with lots and lots of tuna and the bread is soft, the cheese melted, portion size huge! I also got a cucumber salad on the side - do not recommend sides as it's an extra $4 for a sauce sized bowl lmao I came here during jury duty, and I was so tempted to keep coming back all the days I had to serve, but alas it's not most budget friendly places, but definitely would come back again for a nice little treat! I sent my sweet husband to grab me their delicious unstuffed avocado salad with chicken. I was looking at pictures and I had to get one. My husband was so sweet he went during his shift since he was already in downtown doing his homeless detail. Although I had to grab my food from him bc hes not allowed to leave his area of work. He also grabbed a pastrami sandwich for himself as he hadn't had lunch yet. He was also sweet enough to take pictures for me in his car before I grabbed the food. This is a very small place with outdoor seating in the outskirts of little Italy. Its quaint and was empty. I supposed they are about to close so there was no rush time. The pastrami tastes more like ham to me and they put Kraut in it which made it taste a bit sour. My husband loves that sort of thing but not me. As for my salad, it was fresh and I even got a whole avocado! The chicken tasted like it had some sort of relish in it, not my most favorite flavor, but the whole salad in it's entirety tasted great! My only one problem is the price point. I don't think I got enough pastrami for 15$ and my avocado salad seems more like a 12$ salad. I cant blame them though as MOST places cost this much or more. I think a few things to keep in mind when going to Carnivore Sandwich are the location and the general pricing in the area. The sandwich I had was good and they definitely packed it pretty full of high quality ingredients, however, $17 after tip and fees is a little pricey for a to go sandwich. The other restaurants in the area are pretty comparably priced at lunch time, so it's on par with others but still feels steep. The location is walkable from other areas in downtown but parking looked challenging. There is a small outside seating area but the inside area is fairly restricted to the counter and drinks. read more

I had my pastrami sandwich come on a French roll with mustard and pepper jack cheese. The number one thing I look for is whether they use thick cut or paper thin cut pastrami; mine was thin cut. I also see if they will offer pan fried, hot, or cold. No options were offered and by the time I got to where I cold eat it, it was warm. My sandwich did smell and taste pretty good, an 8 out of a 10 for me. It is a lunch specific business with 4 barstools inside with tables and chairs outside. They are located on the west end of B St across the intersection from the Santa Fe Depot. Okay I am not gonna lie, I did not like the guy's style of speaking to the patrons. Annoying rubbish small talk questions, addressing me with "young man" (meaning that I am super old), but most importantly that he messed up the order. The cheeseburger that was promised within 10 min did not know of its existence. While in the meantime, I had downed the rather dry and underwhelming potato salad, no burger was conceived yet. Come into the picture the other staff folks who upon questioning did not even care about saying something like "how can I help you?" or "oh no, let me check for you" or so but only walked away and whispered something to the cashier. Only after some time, that annoying first guy realized that my order had not gone through (great: he at least remembered), and the thing was finally moving towards being born. And that was prolly the worst, 9 months or so waiting in anticipation of expecting something good from a 4.5 rated place, that thing was slippery, greasy, and flat in taste! Good thing it did not start screaming 'cause internally I did, full of regrets. Would not recommend! Overrated! PS in response to BO reply: ... and the offer of a free drink in addition to the re-fillable soft drink (very generous) must still be stuck in their system. For $18, you get a decent sized sandwich piled with pastrami, but the combo, with a small ramekin of potato salad for an extra $3 that I didn't quite enjoy, just didn't feel like it matched the value. The sandwich was served hot, which is a nice touch compare to some delis who just slap it on their bread, but the texture of the pastrami was a little off for me. It felt more "moist" than I prefer (maybe too steamed?), lacking that firm, dense exterior that I think makes a pastrami sandwich great. The curing was decent though, so the pastrami had enough flavor to be enjoyable, especially when paired with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut without an extra charge on top of their $18 price point ($21 if you make it a combo). As for the ambiance, the place was clean and modern, with great-looking digital screens at the front counter that really set a nice tone. But honestly, the lack of music made it feel kind of empty. It's not bustling like a typical NYC deli, so I guess that made it feel a little lifeless. I get that it's not a Katz's Deli, but for me, pastrami is a comfort food for New Yorkers/Jewish folks and the overall experience just didn't give me that vibe. The staff, while polite, didn't seem particularly energetic. They did their job, but it felt more like a transaction than an experience that would make me want to come back. All in all, I'd give it a solid 3 stars that leans toward the higher end, but it didn't quite hit the mark for a 4-star rating. Maybe I caught them on an off day, or maybe my pastrami stand is just too high for San Diego. Either way, it scratched the itch, but I'm going to check out some other delis that my Reddit post recommended before I think about returning. I got the Corned Beef Rueben on GF bread and a small beef chili. Both items came to exactly one good coupon - that is to say, a $20 bill. The sandwich was certainly not piled as high as I expected but it tasted good. The small chili is a generous size and had lots of meat in it. You can get onions and cheese added on top if you want. The chili itself has onions, tomatoes and both red and green bell peppers in it. Cooked peppers add a VERY strong flavor to the chili. In this case, it's like you're eating cooked bell peppers with some meat and onions in it. I LOVE chili and I wanted to like this one but the overpowering taste of the way too abundant bell peppers ruined the chili. To the chili chef: lose 99% of the peppers! Service staff was nice. Inside bar stools are comfortable, but limited. Outside seating (metal chairs and tables) provides a place to eat and has umbrellas to keep you out of the hot sun which was nice. This place has a variety of items. Sadly, I cannot eat luncheon meat so opted for the tuna sandwich. The cons-came during rush hour so the wait was very long. They are super busy so beware and plan your time accordingly. -parking The sandwich was a big portion-I only ate half the first day. Pretty tasty, it was the build your own which still came with a delicious pickle. I got mine with Munster cheese and many toppings. The fries, by the time I got home I expected them to not be as fresh or as good but oh my, they were so good. I don't like crunchy fries and these were nice and soft similar to steak fries. The boss is a corned beef, pastrami, and Swiss on rye and is exactly as expected. This hefty sando is my favorite and might make your day. The Italian is a classic everywhere, and this one is a solid choice. The other choices are also top notch, and all have a mixture of 2 or 3 meats and cheeses, so you can't go wrong. This place makes a good sandwich. After a morning on the San Diego Bay, the family went walking around downtown in search of a satisfying lunch. With a mother-in-law with a hankering for a Club and a wife who loves a good Philly Cheese, Carnivore popped up on our radar and we braved the warm sun to make it here for a bite. As noted, I split a Philly Cheese Steak with the woman I love. The taste was very good, though it felt like it was essentially processed hamburger, pressed into solid steak-like strips, stored until needed, and then heated up and served on a roll. Despite this, the veggies were grilled down to a soft sweetness, the flavors were on point and blended well under that gooey cheese, and my wife admitted this was one of the best Philly Cheese Steaks she had had down here in Southern California. Our son opted for the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. It was beautifully put together and a quick sear on the tortilla helped it stay in one piece well under intensive eating by a 10 year old. He enjoyed the blending of flavors, even eating the softened onions, and finished off everything save for the final two bites. The daughter unit selected the Chicken Strips and Fries. Though, she only ate the fries themselves, the chicken was still a good size and fried well giving it that chewy exterior that I prefer. As for the fries, they were pretty perfect and there was enough from her plate, plus another side of them, to satisfy everyone at the table. My mother in law had The Country Club, choosing it off the menu hours before and anxiously awaiting it all morning. It was huge, four tall cuts layered across her plate with pickle slices on top. She was only able to finish half of it, but stated that she enjoyed it quite a bit. In the end, a pretty good lunch. Not the best sandwiches I've ever had, but worth coming back to if we're ever in the neighborhood. While there's not much that makes them really stand out in the crowded field of shops filled with Milton's, Ike's, and Hungry Bear, Carnivore Sandwich is still a few steps above and beyond a basic deli and worth a try. read more

We have ordered lunch to-go from Carnivore many times. Sometimes the Turkey is really great and oven roasted and sometimes it's that slimy processed Turkey that should never be served anywhere because no one likes that. I'm not sure why it's inconsistent but it's a bit frustrating because when I order Turkey, I don't know if it will be the good kind or not. Also, once I ordered avocado toast from Carnivore and it was literally a piece of bread with avocado slices thrown on it barely sticking to it.
