    Protein pancakes
    Paul M.

I love pancakes! But, I'm on a high protein, low-carb and low-calorie diet. And, gluten-free. So, what can I do? I can go to Breakfast Republic. They have protein pancakes that are low calorie and gluten-free. And, they taste pretty good. Not as good as their regular pancakes, but, good enough to satisfy my pancake craving. I have breakfast there one or two times a month. I always have the same thing - protein pancakes and decaf coffee. And, the portion is so huge that I take most of it home and have the pancakes for breakfast the next several days. Enough about the pancakes. Let's talk about the service, which is what compelled me to write this review. A few months ago I sat down and my server, Erick, came up to my table and said, "Protein pancakes and decaf?" I was blown away! He remembered me and my order. I am not that regular a guest. He is just that amazing. And, it doesn't stop there. A few minutes after delivering my food, he brought a to-go box, because he knew I always take most of my meal with me, and I'm always in a hurry. That's not great service - that's extraordinary service! At one to two times a month, Erick makes me feel like a 5 day a week regular. I wish I could give Breakfast Republic 14 stars; 5 for having protein pancakes, 4 for their taste and 5 for the extraordinary service.

Serviced by Grant and he was awesome ! Friendly and helpful, patient and always made sure our coffee was topped off and that we got everything we needed. Cute atmosphere, not familiar with San Diego so this side of town was very new to me and I thought it was unique and quaint. As for the food, this is why my three stars I guess. Everything was creative, and they didn't really have anything basic, per se. If that's what you're looking for you won't find it here. Be prepared for a unique experience of homemade goodness. I guess as I write this I realise this place deserves 4

First time here because of SDCC 2026!! My hubby decided to give this place a try this morning as our hotel is close by...so happy he did! This place is such a vibe! It's so unique and different inside with whisks as lights! So cool! Well, to me I loved it. And of course, with great vibes, comes great breakfast too!! I ordered their Shrimp and Grits plate, and I haven't had such great grits since I was in the South(years ago)!!! I just love the smoothness and the texture of the grits and just a slight spiciness, not too hot. Mmmmmmm! Chef's kiss!! I also love the prints on their plates/bowls and coffee mugs! Speaking of coffee mugs, I love their coffee too!! So much that I asked for a to-go cup!! I love the presentation of the food too!! As a matter of fact, it's my first experience with breakfast served with awesome presentation! Service was good.

Amazing breakfast place is San Diego. I love roosters so this was right up my alley. Food was tasty and fresh. Service was fast and we never had to ask for anything we were well taken care of. The restaurant was so cute. See my pics and videos

    Tres Leches Vegan Pancakes

I recently took a trip out to San Diego for an appointment and stopped by Breakfast Republic; and wow, everything was absolutely delicious! The interior is super organized, and I loved that they have a full bar area as well. We started with some mimosas, which were fantastic and the perfect kickoff to breakfast. For food, I ordered the Vegan Tres Leches Pancakes, and they were incredible. They were so naturally flavorful and moist that they barely even needed any maple syrup; the combination of the pistachio brittle and vegan buttercream on top was perfect on its own. My friend ordered the Shrimp and Crab Cake Benedict and loved it. He said it was packed with flavor, not dry at all, and didn't taste overly fishy; just perfect in every way. To top it all off, our server was so sweet, checked on us often, and was incredibly proactive throughout our meal. Great food, great drinks, and excellent service. I will definitely recommend to vegans and non vegans. Just to clarify for anyone looking to visit; Breakfast Republic isn't a fully vegan restaurant, but they do have a fair amount of great vegan options clearly marked on the menu.

Eric was amazing with his customer service /hospitality. As soon as her served as water had a smile & checked on us on a timely manner. He spoke spanish which helped my mom feel more at home. We're from the Bay Area and my mom was impressed with the food and his attention during our whole visit here. Love the steak& eggs & my moms omelette was made perfectly. Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting SD!

My daughter discovered this breakfast spot--we waited about 30 minutes for a table. We chose to sit outdoors. My hubby ordered the Portuguese Linguisa Sausage Omelet, filled with chopped bacon, hot sauce, green bell peppers, garlic, and tomatoes, served with house potatoes and toast. I had the San Diego Benedict, featuring smoked turkey and avocado with two poached eggs on an English muffin, topped with hollandaise sauce and cilantro, and served with house potatoes. Our daughter enjoyed the Brioche French Toast topped with brûléed bananas. I also tried the Café de Olla, a coffee sweetened with house-made cinnamon piloncillo syrup, which was delicious. Our breakfast was hearty and flavorful, and the service was great.

Had to try place, it is always busy the weekend. So lucky we are in town mid week. Everything was delicious Ordered: jambalaya, American breakfast, jalapeño cheddar sausage plate. More than enough to shared between four of us. Service was good not great, bathroom can be a wait when it's busy.

SOLID BREAKFAST SPOT: I've been here a few times now and it's been consistently good. The Hot Chick Benedict was very good with just the right balance of heat and richness. On another visit I tried the pancakes, and another time the chilaquiles. Both were satisfying and clearly made with care. They offer bottomless coffee, which I always appreciate, and it makes it easy to relax and not feel rushed. If you're looking for a dependable breakfast place with good variety, this one delivers.

    Delicious coffee with oat milk.

Eggcellent place to enjoy breakfast in downtown. The menu has everything you are craving, the portions are enough to share and service is five stars! Everything we ordered was hot, fresh and delicious. Be sure to get there early as the tables fill up quickly and the restaurant isn't very large. It's located on a busy corner, street parking is limited and it wasn't very loud inside. Very inviting restaurant, comfortable booths / chairs, friendly and welcoming staff. Breakfast Republic is a great place to start the day and we highly recommend a visit here. Everything was perfect! Enjoy.

Probably the best breakfast I've had in California! Very creative combinations! I like how they are able to make adjustments and have so much variety. The breakfast jambalaya was good although they may have been a little dry, but the poached shakes were very tasty. The Jurassic Park bacon was an ample portion and pleasantly decadent. I miss having true Portuguese sausage from my last trip to Hawaii and this version did not disappoint. The freshly squeezed orange juice tasted great although it was in a pretty small glass and was not bottomless. I did enjoy trying the cocky 12 iced coffee that is served over ice cubes made of coffee, which was good, but nothing extraordinary and very pricey. Our total bill for just two people was close to $100. Service was a little slow, but the restaurant was busy and there weren't that many servers. I definitely want to come back again and try more!

    The Hot Chick Benedict

I went to the Breakfast Republic at their downtown location over the weekend and had a really great experience. Even though it was busy, we were seated in about 15 mins. The ambiance is casual and relaxed. We started with their in-house freshly squeezed orange juice and the Breakfast Republic specialty latte with vanilla, chai, and mocha. Both were delicious. The OJ was refreshing, and the latte was comforting. For food, we ordered the Hot Chick Benedict and their Chilaquiles. Everything was flavorful and satisfying, with generous portions and well-seasoned sauces. We also tried their limited-time special, the Golden Harvest French Toast, and this was the highlight. The brioche French toast topped with ricotta, fig jam, cinnamon-roasted pears, and a sweet honeycomb crumble was absolutely amazing. It was rich & perfectly sweet, and we honestly devoured the whole plate. Overall, a really enjoyable brunch with great drinks and standout food.

Breakfast Republic absolutely brings together great food, great vibe, and truly standout service. First off, Kayla deserves a massive shoutout, she was phenomenal. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful in everything she did. She checked in at all the right moments, made sure everything was perfect, and brought such positive energy to the table. Experiences like this are rare, and she's absolutely the kind of team member who elevates the entire restaurant. Seriously, give her a raise! What we ordered: Orange juice & coffee - refreshing and a perfect start Protein pancakes - absolutely amazing, fluffy and satisfying Chicken fennel sausage with scrambled eggs - flavorful and cooked perfectly Side of turkey bacon - crisp and delicious Side of French toast with strawberry and mascarpone - sweet, creamy, and indulgent in the best way The food was delicious and tasted incredibly fresh. You could really tell the ingredients are high quality. On top of that, the place has an awesome vibe lively, welcoming, and perfect for a relaxed breakfast or brunch. Between the food, the atmosphere, and Kayla's exceptional service, this was an easy five-star experience. Can't wait to come back.

Ask the Community - Breakfast Republic

    Is this patio dog friendly?

The patio is dog friendly, there just aren't very many tables out there

Hi Johan. I noticed you respond to yelp reviews so o want to ask a question about allergies. My son has a dairy allergy. Can you make French toast or pancakes with soy or almond milk? Thanks larry

Hi Larry, thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately the bread we use for our French toast contains dairy so our French Toast cannot be altered.…

Is there different hours for Father's Day weekend? Will the menu be the same for Father's Day weekend?

No, the hours of Breakfast Republic will be the same as a normal weekend.

Hi there, Since there's no reservations and it's on a first come first serve basis... Can you accommodate a large party of 40-50 people? I'm thinking of having a sweet 16…

Have you looked at this darling place? You might need a bigger venue for that large of a group, but hey, call them to find out.

Anyone know what time a party of 7 will need to line up if we plan on eating a 9am breakfast sunday morning? Thanks!

I would have one person come about a half hour early and then text everyone once they got the reservation or put on the list

    Are there vegan options?

Yes, there is a full vegan section on the menu. And currently one of the seasonal specials is Vegan as well!

    Is this place Kid friendly?

Yes, it's actually family friendly and girl's brunch day friendly. It's for everyone without feeling like one or the other.

Do they have the nutritional info somewhere?

The menu details the ingredients but I don't think you'd eat here if you were being calorie conscious. They have vegan and veggie dishes.

Do they serve mimosas on fridays ? Seen other local restaurants only do brunch on Saturdays and sundays

Mimosas are a part of their regular daily menu.

Does the entire party have to be present to be seated?

    Yes

How long is the wait usually for Sunday brunch?

The later you go the longer the wait. Approximately an hour to an hour and a half later in the day.

Are you guys open for sit down dining?

    Yes

    How is parking?

There is a good amount of on street parking in the area.

    Are they taking reservations?

No reservations. It's first come first serve! Show up early and enjoy the amazing food!

    Do they take reservations somewhere?

Hi, unfortunately we’re on a first come first serve basis and don’t accept reservations

Do they have a full bar?

    Yes they do ! 🤗

    Do they have bottomless mimosas?

No but we do serve mimosas by the bottle to save a few dollars!

    Are you open on Christmas?

    Yes :)

    Is this place pet friendly?

    Yes, on the patio

We happened upon this place for happy hour, which is a great deal. The old fashioned was really good and they have a decent wine list, both at great prices. I don't think it ever works to have multiple people serve the table. There's no continuity and stuff gets forgotten. We had multiple orders not logged and therefore not delivered. We ordered both the Brussels and the ahi crackers for appetizers. The Brussels came 5 minutes later. Perfect timing. But the ahi never showed. I don't think it was until we mentioned it. It had really been a long time so we asked to cancel. But they lets us know the entrees were delayed and told us they'd comp the ahi. All right, whatever, we had them. They were still on the bill but I didn't say anything. Also midway through I asked for a second beer but it never came. I wanted the Mexican lager and the server even asked if I wanted a line. But I think this order directly preceded the discussion about the ahi so it must have been forgotten. My final gripe: I really don't like places that bring entrees staggered, or when they're ready. The steak came and the chicken followed about 5 minutes later. We're a party of 2. It's not like a 6 top and the poor server needs to make 2 trips. All in all this place isn't really for us so we won't be coming back anytime soon.

This is probably the longest overdue review I have ever written, but at this point, not writing it…read morealmost feels selfish because I would very much like to always be able to get a table here. But alas, Carbon Angela's Kitchen deserves every flower, every reservation, every "you have to try this place" text thread, and every bit of love. This place has become one of my absolute favorite hidden gems in San Diego. Easily top five for me, and as someone who dines out a lot for a living, that is not a casual statement. There are places you like, places you recommend, and then there are places that start to feel woven into your actual life. Carbon Angela's Kitchen is that for me. Angela is truly the heart of this place. She has this way of making you feel like you are not just coming in for dinner, but being welcomed into something she deeply cares about. And Emanuele is absolutely part of that magic too. Together, they have built something that feels warm, generous, soulful, and so special. They feel like long-lost friends and family now, and I am honestly just so proud of them and all they are creating. The food is the kind that makes you want to order with the whole table in mind. The griglia mista is hands down one of the best investments you can make if you are dining with a group. It is the meat platter, it is the moment, and it is absolutely worth ordering. Four to five people can split it, especially if you are also doing appetizers, salad, wine, and a few extra things for the table. It is such a perfect nod to what Carbon was before Angela took over, when the space leaned more BBQ, but now it feels beautifully married with Angela's warmth, Italian influence, and the kind of hospitality that makes the whole meal feel like an experience. And please do not sleep on the rest of the menu. The short rib is fire. The arancino trio is always a yes. The eggplant croquette? Obsessed. The crespelle? So good. The Everything Salad is my favorite salad on the menu, and the street corn should never, under any circumstances, be skipped. I said what I said. The wine selection is top tier, the appetizers are memorable, and the whole place has that rare magic of feeling cozy, intentional, and completely unpretentious. You can come for a low-key dinner, a girls' night, a celebration, or one of those "we just need a really good meal and a really good glass of wine" kind of evenings. And the back patio? Perfect for an evening under twinkling lights. It is one of those spaces that just begs for a long table, good conversation, clinking glasses, and the kind of night that accidentally turns into a core memory. They also have catering menus available, which is very important information to keep in your back pocket if you are hosting anything soon. What Angela has built is honestly something to behold. One of the hardest-working restaurateurs doing the dang thing in a city like San Diego, and now opening Bedda across the way too? I am in awe and wonder watching it all unfold. It takes so much courage, grit, taste, excellence, and heart to build what they are building, and you can feel all of it in the room. Carbon Angela's Kitchen is a true labor of love, a hidden gem, and one of those places I will keep cheering for again and again. Go hungry. Order the griglia mista. Get the Everything Salad. Do not skip the street corn. Share Share Share, so you can try a little bit of everything and do a tried and true family style meal, you won't regret it.

I wanted to make sure we tried it all, so without further ado: The Poached Pear salad was delightfully refreshing, with the pistachio pesto adding so much pizazz. We also ordered the cheese plate because Humboldt Fog was on the menu, a fast favorite. Steak Frites were cooked to perfect medium rare, and the Duroc Pork Chop literally melted in our mouths, with the red pepper really standing out on the dish. Even the market veggies were perfectly seasoned and duck fat truffle fries were loved by Dad. After a life changing event, this meal was like a welcome hug home for our family and it really set us up for a nice evening. For being takeout, it was def 5-stars and I see why this is a beloved gem in the heart of North Park.

It's a casual spot, but the food leans more chef-driven and thoughtful. We started with the breadsticks and truffle butter simple, but really well done. The crispy portobello mushrooms were one of my favorites, super flavorful with a great texture. For drinks, I had a margarita and a bloody mary, both solid. For mains, we ordered the tri-tip sandwich (aka "Cardiff Crack") and the chicken sandwich. The tritip especially lives up to the hype really tender, packed with flavor, and easy to see why it has that nickname. Dessert is what stood out so much . The butter cake comes warm with ice cream and purée, and it was easily the highlight of the meal. I took a bite and just paused for a second it's that kind of dessert Overall, a really good spot if you want elevated comfort food in a laid back setting. I'd definitely come back, especially for that butter cake and tritip

The entrée menu is decent -- nothing too out of the ordinary -- and pricing runs a little high in my opinion. But the atmosphere is lively, they're dog‑friendly, and the patio area is a nice place to sit if you want something casual and comfortable. Overall, a decent option if you're looking for a sit‑down American restaurant in North Park with good happy hour bites and a fun, busy vibe.

Our waitress was a total superstar and took great care of us with service and answering questions. We even joked about Star Trek a bit. I ordered the Rose salad and some roasted potatoes (Bravas Rosas). The potatoes were really delicious and well-seasoned with crunchy and soft parts and a nice spicy dipping sauce. I wanted to love the salad because it was large and well-dressed, BUT the lettuce was gritty and could've used a more thorough rinse. I ended up not eating much of it because the texture wasn't good. One of my friends got the Rose Salad Pie which she really enjoyed (basically a pizza with Rose Salad on top) and my other friend got the gazpacho which really liked. I would definitely come back and try some other dishes. If I do, I'll update the review!

We got champagne and did their Honeydew Lemongrass Limeade as the mixer, which I highly recommend! My friend got the Egg White Scramble and I ended up getting the Fried Rice. I was pretty disappointed in the basically non-existent bok choy in my dish since they chop it up and add it to the rice. It's a waste of bok choy honestly and the dish would be better with full bok choy pieces between the rice and egg. They couldn't even provide me with a side of bok choy because they pre-chop everything. As our dessert, we ended up splitting the Ultimate Sticky Bun. It is unfair how delicious this was! Condensed milk, strawberries, and lavender ice cream. Soo happy we decided to set one aside for dessert. There's a reason these sell out quickly!

So I turned around and stopped in. What I found was a quaint, tucked-away, almost inconspicuous spot delivering food and hospitality at a level that honestly borders on absurd for how unassuming it appears from the outside. The service was warm, polished, and intuitive without ever feeling pretentious. Hats off to both chefs, Christi and Mark for making me feel welcome. The wine pairings? Thoughtful, balanced, and exactly what you hope for from a restaurant that actually respects food. And then there's the burger. This thing reads like poetry: Ribeye and NY strip trim blend, cooked like a proper steak (medium rare, the only correct answer here), melted gouda, a soft house potato roll, all resting in a luxurious bordelaise sauce that would make a French chef nod in approval. Seriously. This is not a "burger joint burger." This is a chef-driven, butcher-minded expression of beef. Every bite tastes intentional. The bordelaise underneath ties the entire thing together with this deep, glossy richness that elevates it from comfort food into something bordering on fine dining. Places like this are why I still love discovering restaurants organically. No hype machine. No gimmicks. Just confidence, technique, restraint, and execution. This very unassuming little spot has Michelin written all over it.

First, it took 10 minutes for someone to even come to the hostess stand, and although there were plenty of open tables, she said there was a 30 minute wait. The hostess said there were only 2 servers and one just went on break - at prime time lunch time as the World Cup finals just started. (Poor planning on management's decision.) The hostess took my phone number down and said they would send a text. 40 minutes passed and I didn't receive a text. I addressed it back with the hostess and she said I canceled the reservation - which I did not. After a second hostess checked to see what happened, looked like the hostess incorrectly put my phone number down and also canceled it out. As a long time Hilton Honors member, I expected better customer service. As I came online to write my review, looks like many others had similar negative experience with the hostess stand recently.
