My husband stopped by Carolina Kitchen and ordered the Half Rotisserie Chicken meal that came with two sides. The two sides he ordered was candied yams and butter cabbage. He also, ordered two slices of Rum Cake. According to the online menu the Half Rotisserie Chicken was priced at $17.99 but he was charged $21.00 and received a thigh/leg and not a half. Not happy about that! The Rum Cakes were awful. It was burnt, old, and stale. According to their online menu the cakes was priced at $6.99 but he was charged $9.00 each and neither slice was worth the price. What bothers me is some customers just have to complain about something never satisfied. Wow! Processed meatloaf in a barbeque gravy sauce. This is definitely a no no. Looked like package pet food to me. However I managed my nerve to try it anyway. Took a couple of bites, trying to find that one good piece but stopped after tasting the overly oily greens. What do you do when your miles away with a complaint?... trash it! I was returning spare ribs from the night before because they were wayyy too salty. I called as soon as I tasted them. The nice gentleman told me he would not be there the next day, but that there would be no issue when I returned the next day for a different dinner. I brought the entire dinner back. The lady whom I was told was the manager at the front register was so rude. I have never seen anyone so rude in my life. Major attitude and very unfriendly. She asked what I wanted and when I tried to explain what happened, she dismissed me and told the young girl to take care of me. I don't know who owns this place, but if it were my establishment, I would NOT want this lady representing. You try to patronize black businesses and you can't because of this type of service! This was such a positive experience, I had to post. Arrived 20 min before closing for a take out order. The staff provided the most courteous , enthusiastic , friendly and hospitable service I ever experienced in a restaurant that is getting ready to close for the evening. They were out of pork chops on the food line and the gentleman eagerly offered to have them made fresh. They confirmed my order several times. Extremely friendly. (Our 2nd time since they opened) This time we arrived after 6, so they consider it suppertime and if you dine in, you are seated and place your order with a server. (Last time we went through the serving line ourselves. The "cafeteria" style is daytime only) Our server was Sharif, friendly young man who took our order, brought drinks (and kept them filled - high marks for that alone) Sharif brought us 2 corn muffins to start. I prefer regular corn muffins, these had cinnamon and honey butter. They weren't bad though. Husband chose the half rack baby back ribs with fries and baked beans. Nice size portions. The ribs were cooked well, not dry. They were a bit too spicy for my husband (I suggest plenty of drink if you order this) fries and beans were good. We didn't get any dessert (I actually had stopped in the night before and picked up their very delicious, overpriced, banana pudding) I ordered the pork chops with rice and gravy, green beans and sweet potatoes. You get 2 chops, I wish you could just get 1 though. Chops and gravy were seasoned nicely. Green beans were good. I have decided to give up on all Carolina Kitchen's this is the third one I've been to and have been disappointed. Decided to go here on a whim, and missed their lunch menu by a few minutes which was a little disappointing because their lunch menu included various sandwiches that can only be ordered during lunch hours! Of these sandwiches, the Carolina style pulled pork sandwiches caught my eye because I'm from North Carolina and its one of my absolute favorites; in fact I will not eat pulled pork if it's not Carolina style. Unfortunately, their lunch is from 11am-3:00 and we came in at a little after 3, so we missed it! Their lunch menu has incredible options and I think they should consider making some of these options available throughout regular business hours which is one reason I gave it only 4 stars. Prior to ordering, the waitress brings out muffin-style cornbread which are freshly baked and taste very good!!! I ended up ordering the Creole Salmon entree, which came with salmon, lump crab meat, grilled shrimp with creole sauce over mashed potatoes, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The food was just as amazing as it looked, however the macaroni and cheese wasn't my favorite because I felt the noodles were a little overcooked, and didn't have much flavor other than "cheese" (is that a flavor? ), so the noodles were kind of mushy (reason 2 behind the 4 star rating). Other than that the food was amazing!!! And I definitely can't wait to go back and try some of the other entrees, especially the Carolina Pulled Pork and firecracker shrimp!! This place has the worst customer service. I tried to call ahead and place my order for pick up and the phone rang for 5 minutes and then it just hung up. I called back and someone answered but then placed me on hold. I was on hold for 10 minutes and by then I had already arrived at the store. When I walked in, there was only 3 people in line and at least 9 people behind the counter. I called from inside the store to see what would happen and I watched the guy walk over to the phone and hang it up then walk to the side and get on his phone. This place is pure garbage. I ordered the lump crab cake dinner, and it was a joke. No lump at all. They were Phillips frozen crab cakes. The same one you get in the grocery store. The tomatoes were well cooked and the breading was heavy on the cornmeal. For dinner we ordered chicken ceased salad, fried pork chops with candied yams and mixed veges, shrimp and grits, and the kid ordered country fried shrimp and fries. Salad: lettuce was mostly wilted and the chicken was really dry. But the dressing was delicious. My husband is big on dressings so for him the dressing was a win. Pork chops: flavor was delicious. Breading had a good taste to them. Pork was a little over cooked. Mixed veges weren't over cooked and still had a nice crunch. and candied yams had a nice flavor. Fried shrimp: French fries were "to the perfect crunch" says the kid. Shrimp was fine as the kid ate all of them. Shrimp and grits: shrimp had a great smokey bacon buttery flavor. The calamari were great. A lot better than I was expecting and so was the lobster tail. The atmosphere is a little loud with the chatter and the loud music that plays from the speakers. The hostess could have seated us faster considering there was no one waiting before us but for some reason I wasted 5 minutes to be seated. Since no one seemed to be available to seat me, I assumed I had to order at the service line. Mistake, since I then got my order to go. I've been here a few times. The first time when it first opened and had a good experience and the food was good. The next few times the service and food got progressively worse. This brings me to my most recent experience. My mom and I decided to stop by and eat here, we still love the food and we visit other locations sometimes even with varied service experiences, so we decided to give it another try. It was around lunch time on Labor day so there weren't many people, we were told it would be a 20 minute wait but we were seated earlier than that. We put our orders in immediately because we knew what we wanted. While we waited, we noticed there were flies congregating on a table near a corner window. Maybe 4 of them. They stayed pretty close to their table and didn't really fly around the restaurant so we tried to ignore them (I know! But I hadn't eaten all day I was hungry lol). Well food was served to some tables closer to the "fly table" and then the flys started to move outward and fly around those people. It was kind of ridiculous, there were flies sitting on a lady's cup and the people at the tables were shooing the flies away still trying to eat. Eventually the tables asked for a manager to address this issue. They all ended up receiving a discount on their meal, but the manager tried to casually explain away the flies saying they couldn't control flies coming in when people came in through the front door. That didn't seem like a good enough answer to me, all restaurants have doors and people coming through them, but not everyone has a family of flies flying around their customers food who are at the window tables. With that being said, the food was DELICIOUS. (again! I know! Yes, we stayed and ate there lol I'm just hoping the fly issue didn't spread to the cooking area) My mom and I didn't really have any issues with flies at our table and we tried to get out of there as fast as we could so we didn't have to deal with that. I had the shrimp and grits and my mom had the salmon. We probably won't be back for awhile, maybe in the winter when there are less flies around in general. read more
