The fish was seasoned well...pieces were small....as for the sides, we were really disappointed. My string beans and potato salad FLAVORLESS...my husband's greens and onion rings FLAVORLESS as well. I've come here quite a few times before writing this review. After church, during the last few weeks of my pregnancy I was craving fried chicken so often this was almost a weekly thing for me. I discovered that they salt brine their chicken. They say it's 4 pieces you receive which is true if you cut up the quarter legs visually its 2 pieces. We usually ordered the fried chicken with 2 sides I got kale greens and Mac and cheese. I was not a fan of the kale greens and on a separate occasion I even gave the green beans a shot but I do not like sugar or a sugary taste in my vegetables it reminds me of Gloria's canned greens. The Mac and cheese was a hit or miss. I've only had it once where it was a miss though. My husband's sides were Mac and cheese and potato salad. He said the sides to him were okay. The star of the meal was the chicken. Well season for it to be salt brined My main issue is with the portion sizes for the price. You get a small condiment cup for your side instead of filling up the sides portion that's in the styrofoam plate. Not sure who thought that was a great idea, but I don't think it sits well with me as a consumer. We paid a little over $33 dollars. For 2 fried chicken dinner platters that were supposed to be $12.15 each sides included, but obviously their website prices need to be updated because their fried chicken platters are no longer $12.15. Taxes for two platters does not equal more than $10 dollars at least it should in this area. I choose to support this place because their owner is a retired firefighter and it's nice to support my community. They are pretty upfront about their wait most times when you come it's a 20 min wait whether a lot of people are there or it's just you waiting. They make everything fresh besides the sides. I just wish they answer the phone so people could order over the phone to shorten the wait time. The restaurant gives me country side bbq joint/family picnic vibes. Reminds me of down south living. I'm new to the area and have been looking for a good rib spot. I've passed this place several times and decided to try them today. The menu is mostly takeout and they do have an outdoor, open eating area to enjoy your food. As for the menu, they have a lot of your typical BBQ joint offerings.....Many options are available from seafood, baked/grilled chicken, liver&onions, sandwiches, to of course BBQ and sides ....and desserts. On this day, I tried the Rib Tips as a first test. You can always tell if a rib joint is going to be legit-- hitting or not, by how well they can cook rib tips due to the small cuts of the meat and need to keep them moist. Also, the rib tips needs to have the right meat to fat ratio on the bones in order to cook them right and for them to be juicy and tender. Only the skilled BBQ Masters know how to pull this off and you will know by first bite. For starters, you order from an obscure window, where you can barely see inside or even see who you are even talking to. Next, after placing the order, this is the part that actually gets a deduction of stars for me which is the wait time. For just a simple order of rib tips only, I waited over 20 minutes! There were others that were waiting just as long and I can tell by the looks on their faces the they were not happy about it. lol Finally, my order was called. I dug in immediately at one of the outside tables because I was starving and I must say I wasn't that impressed. The Rib Tips were just okay....nothing to rave about. They were a bit on the chewy side and overcooked. Also, although the smoke ring on the meat was evident....it was lacking flavor. It came with bbq sauce on the side which helped make it somewhat appetizing. On a positive note, they served healthy portions of the meat....no complaints there. Perhaps I will try this place one more time as to maybe I came on bad day (Friday afternoon around 3pm)....which is still not an excuse for lackluster food. Also not sure about the timing of when you need to come here, but I will say it gets crowded really fast, which is probably even worse on the weekends. Just be prepared to wait. So many other reviewers have already complained about the size of the sides but, in all honesty, this is actually the correct portion we should be eating anyways. I get it tho' ... if you're spending $15 (and MORE) for an entree, your plate should represent that. (FYI: Our bill was almost $90 and nobody finished their food.) We have no complaints about the meat portions in any of our catfish, fried chicken, ribs and brisket dinner orders. The brisket was tender but a little too tart/vinegary; the ribs, chicken and catfish were ok but we get better, for less, at other local restaurants. Our sides were also a little sketchy. The backyard beans were ok, the kale greens and potato salad were too tart/vinegary; the sweet potato soufflé had too much cinnamon and citrus flavor, and the mac n cheese was not savory at all. We were served within the 20-25 minute time frame they quoted but WHYYY is there such a lengthy wait for carryout? Then, to add insult to injury, they forgot our desserts (which, btw, were also NOT worth the price we paid). My first time visiting here over the weekend and was a little disappointed. We ordered a rack of ribs, brisket, half smoke, croaker and Mac &Cheese. The brisket was old they had to cook that the day or 2 before because it was a little dry and dark. The bark on the brisket was a bit too salty. The croaker was good and had a nice batter and the ribs were good also. I wasn't a fan of the season on the ribs but they were very tender. I was surprised they offered brisket, a few other bbq locations in fort washington dont, unfortunately. I love that it's a black owned business at an intersection with no nearby restaurants other than carry outs a little ways down the road. Once you can wiggle your way into the not-so-smart parking lot, you make your way to the order window. The menu is posted on the side but be prepared for many items to be sold out. I ordered the rib meal which came with 4 bones and 2 sides. I enjoyed the ribs and the delicious BBQ sauce on the side! It's rich and tangy and is just what you want to lick off your fingers. The ribs are pork with a dry rub. They don't "fall off the bone" but they are tender. Bonus points because they gave me 6 bones instead of 5! The cabbage was good too. It was well seasoned and you could see the vibrant colors of the added veggies and seasonings. The yams (not to be confused with the sweet potato casserole) tasted like baby food. I can't put my finger on it...perhaps too much nutmeg, honey(?)...it just wasn't for me. I've ordered it before and didn't enjoy it then. I don't recommend. I think the price is reasonable. My meal was about $15. A win when I don't have to cook and support a business in my community. Cons...the parking isn't optimal. Cars come from each direction at a busy intersection and it's just tight. The order window is a small opening and not very personable. I don't expect it to be formal but a greeting or would be nice. You have to listen for your ticket number to be called so you're likely waiting in your car or near the small deck. I've ordered the larger platters and sides were the same size as the individual meal size. They're not large enough to share but it's satisfying for one person. I really wanted to like this place but there were too many issues. The restaurant is only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and is always packed. They have somewhat small parking lot so you may have difficulty finding a spot. When you pull up you will see and smell the huge smoker which is right next to the covered patio. The patio is decent sized, but only has a few Adirondack chairs on in there and a large Bluetooth speaker pumping music from one of the local R&B stations throughout the parking lot. The food is a bit pricey, but the prices are not hidden, so you can make your own decision. This place is carry out only, so there is no dining in. You place your order through a small window on the side of the house. I ordered a half slab of ribs, with a side of collard greens and potato salad. I was not very impressed. It took about 30 minutes to get my food and that is where things started to go South. First, I was only given a small container of BBQ sauce that only cover about three of my bones. Second, they only have one type of sauce, mild BBQ. I would have liked more of a variety. The ribs were also cold and I did not have a far drive either. The sides were not much better. The greens did not have much flavor outside of the heavy taste of peppers. I have tasted better straight from a can. The potato salad was pretty bland as well. On a positive note, someone in my group got the fish, which they said was real good. However, they were not a fan of the yams. They said that it had a citrus taste, which after I tried it, I agreed. Maybe I caught them on a really bad day, but I probably will not be back to find out. You know that you are off to a bad start when you are asked how the food was and your response is, well, it was not bad. That is how I would describe this food. So let's get into it, you see the smoke and then the smokers so you know it's real. As I stood in line to pickup my order I heard that they the ribs tips they were previously out of when I called had just come off the grill. When I approached the window, in true fat-girl fashion, I added the tips and cabbage to my previously purchased order of ribs, Mac and greens! As I waited I had the opportunity to chop it up with a few of the other patrons as well as one of the owners. All of the staff is super friendly and the service was great. Call ahead and pack your patience when you arrive, remember fresh food takes time. I appreciate when folks take their time- it definitely show in the taste and the quality of the food. As you wait, you can groove to some great old school music and even purchase cd mixes. There is a wonderful outdoor area that will be quite lovely in the summer. The stars of the show are the tips, the ribs, the Mac and cheese (incredible- I should have gotten more-now I know. The greens are great and so is the cabbage. What I like is that the meat is seasoned to perfection but the sides at not overly seasoned which makes it all pair well. Once you park, guests are handed a menu and asked to place their order on the left side of the building at the window. At this time, they only offer Cash payments but hopefully we will see a credit card option soon. Patrons can wait in the grass or in their cars for their food to be ready. Once your order is ready your name is called, you collect your order to enjoy in your vehicle or at home. Because of the size of the building, RC's Ribs & Soul does not offer dine in services. To be honest, they probably never will. RC's Ribs & Soul will most likely always gear their services to outdoor seating and take out options while at this location. Because their opening so closely coincided with the Corona Virus (COVID19) Pandemic, the process of waiting for your order may currently be different than the owner originally intended. Within the last few weeks and months, this once abandoned building has received modifications including a covered and uncovered patio. We happened to luck upon this establishment. I loved the vibe! They had what looked like a stage for a band, and across the parking lot a covered deck with a picnic table and Adirondack chairs with soulful blues coming out the speakers. Not too far in the distance were the two smokers filled with pork ribs. They already had me reeled in! We ordered a rib dinner that came with two sides. We picked potato salad and collard greens, and got a coke and sweet tea. While waiting, we began chatting with an employee. I felt like I was at a Holiday dinner! Everything was piping hot and flavorful! The cheese/macaroni ratio was perfect. The greens were clearly fresh...no canned greens here! The potato had an extra pep in its steps with the chopped green and red peppers. Not what I'm used to but a great variation. But the BEST side was those sweet potatoes!!! OMG!!! Sweet, with an undertone of nutmeg, cinnamon and butter and just yummy goodness!!! Lord they were better than mine! Finally, we got to the ribs. They were too hot to eat right way so we let them cool slightly [we saw the grill master take them off the grill]. The ribs were beautifully grilled, tender and juicy, and everything we had expected. If I had to tweak them slightly it probably could have used a little bit more salt in the rub but they were delicious nonetheless and the salt is probably my own preference and something I don't need more of I think we spent roughly $13-$16 and we felt it was well worth every penny!
