I was given two pork chop dinners, one smothered. They tried to sale me a folded pork chop that looked like it could be tough and overcooked. I said I would wait for another batch. They agreed and said the wait time is 20min, then changed to 1hr, then it went to they're cleaning the fryer at 3:30 pm. So l was offered 10% off of a 25+ dollar pork chop dinner. So I told them to keep the meals and went to another soul food spot who have very good pork chop dinners for $16. Sad to be leaving this review. I've been going to Carolina Kitchen for over a decade (since I moved to the DMV) but today they majorly disappointed me. I went in on a Thursday evening, they were not packed or super busy. I ordered the catfish, which they told me was made to order and would take 15 minutes. It's usually worth the wait, so I waited. They came back and asked me 2-3 times what I was waiting for... I was one of 3 people waiting and 2 people were in line so I was confused. After about 20 minutes they passed me a bag and kept it moving. I take my plate, happy to have my food and went home. When I get home, I discover I've paid $25 for 1 small piece of unseasoned catfish. I had to pinch myself because I couldn't believe it. So I call back to see if I can get the situation corrected... the call goes straight to a voicemail and the website is down so I can't email. Two choices, bite the bullet or go back up there in after work traffic. I decided to bite the bullet but I am SOOO disappointed. A bad day at work and this was all I was looking forward to. So my family and I frequent this location. The food is always good and hot. The service is okay, the music was up kind of loud,making it hard to hear, them and us. There's always a lot of moving pieces on both sides of the assembly line. It's a bit overwhelming honestly, but they understand their process. People are always standing everywhere, food is in the line up but it honestly gets confusing. They have grabbed someone else's food to try to hand out on many occasions. First time here. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Music level was low enough to still hold a conversation. Really dug the interior decor. Drink selection was standard for a fast food restaurant (Coke, Sprite, ice tea, lemonade, etc.) The food was amazing! Packed with flavor, so many intriguing options, and very generous portions. Appears every entree is served with two sides plus cornbread. I highly recommend Mama's Stew, as the chicken practically falls of the bone, and the collared greens. Only reason didn't give 5 stars is from the menu posted on Yelp the variety of drinks seemed a lot more extensive than what was actually available. read more

Stumbled across the place while going to visit Capital region hospital. Wow, I'm glad I did. Great energy, friendly staff and the food was fantastic. The jerk chicken had a lot of flavor, not too spicy but really good. Collard greens were on point, and the baked beans were some of the best I've ever had. Hard to pinpoint all the flavors that they've got going on in those baked beans but I would come back just for those. Fantastic soul food! This place would earn 5 stars if it wasn't for their dry rotisserie and BBQ chicken. I've been here twice and I've tried the rotisserie, bbq, and jerk chicken. The rotisserie and bbq chicken were both dry and hard... you could honestly choke on it. Mind you, this was on two separate occasions. The jerk chicken though?? Omg. So tender. So juice. SO MUCH FLAVOR. The sides I have tried are also delicious (I've tried the mac and cheese, cabbage, rice, cabbage). No complaints there. When this restaurant first opened, I really enjoyed it. The food was good, the owner was friendly, and the service was usually quick. Now, I don't like going. I have actually avoided going for a while but on Halloween night, my mother requested it so we decided to order takeout. There were a lot of people working behind the counter so you would think the line would move smoothly and quickly. That is until you realize everyone behind the counter is a teenager and easily distracted so there were some hiccups with the line moving. For instance, two of the workers were going crazy about someone in the line's costume which held up the line. Once I got past the food line, the ringing up process went quickly and I was out the door. I ordered the rotisserie chicken, macaroni and cheese , and yams. My daughter wanted the fish sticks but they would've taken 25 minutes and it was already getting late so she tried the fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. My mother ordered the bbq chicken, Mac and cheese, and cabbage. I did not enjoy my food much. The chicken was decent but the macaroni and cheese was unflavored and disappointing. My daughter liked her chicken but didn't eat more than a spoonful of Macaroni. I'm not sure what my mother thought of her food. For me, the best part of the meal was the complimentary cornbread. I went to Carolina Kitchen (Largo, MD) this morning. I paid $25.39 for a Pork Chop dinner that was pretty much a 3 on a scale 1-10. I had string beans, mac and cheese, 2 pork chops on a bed of rice which had no gravy. The mac and cheese was very orange and the cheese did not taste very cheesy. The green beans were crunchy, needless to say raw. The dinner was far from Carolina as I am a native North Carolinian. The ancestors would not be very proud at all. read more

My family ordered the meatloaf, Mac and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, fries, smothered pork chops, vegan "chicken" with chickpeas and yams. NO ONE finished their food. The potato salad and Mac were very bland, the greens were tasteless, the pork chops were tough, the gravy was from a mix, the meatloaf was not seasoned, and the vegan food was bland and awful.
