I prefer "recommending" businesses as opposed to "discouraging". However, my experience at Shaggie Pet/Carroll Gardens Pet Grooming today has left me irked. Especially since I paid $115 for this crappy service, then unknowingly tipped another $20. Let me explain why: I have a Miniature Schnauzer, which means their ear hair must be either trimmed or plucked. Amanda the groomer/owner got negative responses from my dog when she attempted plucking so she stopped. She doesn't have/carry/know about the buzzer attachment that fits in canine ears for ear hair (which is what he's used to having done). Amanda also thought that ear powder was used to dry up ear wax. I didn't correct her, but it's not. It's for gripping ear hair to pluck easier. End result: My dog came home with "Grandpa Wilber's Holiday Ear Hair" and bonus wads of ear wax. Cleaning that disgrace up was my first priority when we got home. A Schnauzer 'Show Cut' has a very long, particularly angled V-shaped beard (90° angle, approximately). Amanda layered his beard in a Farrah Fawcett manner; she wrecked his long beard. I called the store to talk to Amanda; I didn't want to just pitch a b*tch in an email that would never be read. Amanda took zero responsible; said "Every groomer styles differently.". She gave the half-assed apology for feeling sorry that I didn't appreciate her styling, fed me more bullcrap about ear powder's purpose being to dry up ear wax and then she disconnected my phone call, once I asked to be transferred back to the front desk. "Can you bring Giuseppe back tomorrow, so I can clean up his ears/ear hair for you?" Nope "Let me provide you with a $15 credit for the next time you come in...?" She didn't bother. "Awww... I'm sorry you're not happy. Next time you come in, can you show me a picture of the cut/style you'd like me to aim for?" LEAST she could have offered but she had zero interest in customer service. If the breed cut for your pooch is simple, then by all means, disregard my review. However, if you are looking for a Breed Standard Show Cut from a Certified Master Groomer, this is *NOT* where you should be going. read more

Amanda is an amazing groomer and human being. This is the 4th time Harley (my Senior Shihtzu) has been to her. Harley really doesnt enjoy being groomed, especially having his nails cut. After much searching I found this location and have used it twice. My previous groomer would ALWAYS have inconsistency in their work and Harry's haircut wouldn't look "right." Plus Harry would FREAK OUT every time I took him there which made me very uneasy. I rarely leave reviews. For anything. I keep Portuguese Waterdogs. My dogs show, and usually are groomed by their handlers. Over the past five years, I've brought some of my dogs here on occasion. It's difficult for me to take my dogs to commercial pet groomers, because not all grooming is good grooming, and certainly not the quality of the ridiculous "Best In Show" type grooming that show hair demands and it gives me a stupid kick to keep my dogs in. This place just did such a good job...I can't say enough. The incredibly nice lady looked at just three pictures of what a Portuguese show cut (and the European Lion trim/wavy style at that - something particularly hard that has to be carefully shaped with a scissors) and she nailed it. I've cut these dogs hair myself for over twenty years. I know how to do it pretty well myself. I've never done such a good cut as my dog got today. Westminster quality. I have a mini Bernedoodle puppy that has a beautiful long hair that does not get matted. I took her to get her first grooming at the end of May and they did a great job keeping her hair long and cutting around her face. She looked beautiful when I picked her up but it has gotten hot and my puppy was sweltering so I took her back in to get a summer cut. I was very nervous about getting her cut down because I heard that puppy coats never grows back the same. I had read in a Bernedoodle book what levels to cut to and I gave it to Amanda. The response that I just received from this place is outrageous! Neglect my dog? Are you kidding me?!!! The reason my dog was dirty is because he had major surgery which costs me 12,000.00 AND I had to wait until his vet cleared him and stitches were completely healed before grooming or bathing. Also, these people are crazy. If I had caused them so many previous problems, why would they bother booking me at all! This is really an outage!! I neglect my baby!!!! WOW! Our dog needed her tail trimmed because a previous groomer didn't trim it at all during her last haircut and it was sweeping the floor. They quoted us $10, but after doing the job the owner told us not to worry about it. Of course, we couldn't in good faith walk away without paying them, but the fact that the groomer did such a great job (a full 10 minutes on her tail, and it looks so nicely shaped!) and didn't even want to charge us is a testament to how committed they are to customer satisfaction. I have a 6-month old Coton de Tulear. This breed has a very soft, cotton-like hair, which mats and breaks easily, and makes the dog difficult to groom. Carroll Gardens Pet Grooming was referred to me by another owner of a Coton de Tulear. I was very anxious (probably at least as my puppy was :) because it was the first time I was taking her to a salon. Amanda did a great job on her.
